Everything was a LIE!

  • This week I found out some very disturbing information about Black Jack's past. I'm really upset in this video, so please excuse the fast talking and rambling. As a novice horse owner, I knew that I should never buy a horse from an auction. That's why I took the advice from someone I trusted when buying my first horse. And now I know that everything he told me was a LIE!

Sadly, animal welfare laws are very lax. As long as he had food, water and shelter, that is all that is required in the majority of states. They can even stand in a foot of manure, but if they have those three things, there isn't a lot that can be done on a law enforcement level.

I'm so sorry this happened to you! But sadly, horses do get sick or injured & most of us know & accept it as part of owning them... It just sucks that he took advantage of you and you haven't even had the pleasure of riding and enjoying him yet! I hope you talk to people at other stables to get several recommendations for good local trainers that you can observe with different horses to see if they are kind, competent, and gently but firmly & respectfully handle horses. Then, hopefully the trainer you choose can come out or you may need to trailer Blackjack to their stable for an evaluation and help to decide if you can ride and keep him or if he needs a more experienced rider. Depends on his training and temperament... Hopefully, you'll be able to ride & take lessons on BJ! Even if you have to spend some more money having the trainer give BJ a refresher course for a month or 3... He's a very handsome boy and seems sweet when he looks to you for attention. It's important when working with horses, to be calm. centered and focused on him. Take deep belly breaths in thru your nose, hold for 8 count & slowly blow it out thru your mouth. like blowing out candles. Repeat 3-5 times, as needed. Horses can feel our emotions & intentions. If you are frustrated or frazzled, don't work him anymore. Put him up and walk away... Don't take it personally, he may think on the lesson overnite & do it perfectly the bext day! 😅 Start with short 15 minute sessions to see how fast he learns or if he is stubborn and a lot of patience is necessary. Build up as slowly. but don't exceed an hour at most ever.Always end on a positive note, doing something right that he already knows or if he finally gives you the right response to a cue you've been working on!😊 Pet and praise him! Yay! 👏🏻 🤗😘
A side note: I hope you built him up to grazing slowly as grass or any food change can cause colic. Sounds like you already had an experience with it. your best bet is to research. study and absorb as much knowledge about horse care first and foremost. Theres a lot to it & it keeps it interesting, but it's also a matter of life & death. as something as simple as colic can kill them... So slow transitions with food or a strange environment are best. Spend your spare time, getting to know each other. Groom him, will he pick up his feet for you so you can clean them & inspect for injuries, abscesses, fungus or stones, brush his mane and tail, standing close and to the side..Always watch for his reactions & for things that might spook him and get you hurt...
Make sure he is respectful of your space and isn't crowding or bumping you. Brush his face. gently touch, rub and brush his ears. Make sure he isn't head shy or pulling away. Watch and learn from mam videos! Ryan Rose, Tristan Tucker of TRT are very good at groundwork and explaining why they're doing it and why the horse is reacting to it a certain way. Steve Young works with problem, troubled horses, so. if you hit a snag. he might show you how to fix an extreme issue. but a professional would be best to handle him as long as they're not abusive.
I'm surprised the vet isn't having you wrap the tendon for support. Did he recommend liniment or warm water soaks in a bucket with Epsom salts or something else to encourage blood flow? Take heart, tendons should heal unless it was badly torn...
Then he may only be able to do very light walking work. I hope you'll show us a close up of his jnjured leg, & any treatments you're doing for it. Even grooming and walking him is interesting!
As soon as he can move without pain. back and sideways, have a trainer or some of the horse ladies come do groundwork with him. Watch Ryan Rose and have them imitate his training lessons. You may want to subscribe to his Patreon page to get the full stories and all the training details He's very, very good with horses, patient & methodical, which is key. He understands them, mentally emotionally and how they'll react physically. too.
If you are coordinated and have quick reflexes, maybe you can try some of the groundwork too? Wear boots and jeans for protection, maybe even a helmetfor safety, in case he swings his head or gives you a full body blow, whirling around! Since we don't know his behavior at all yet, really.,.. I hope he's a good guy and works out for you!🙏🏻🤲🏻 🕊
      Best of Luck! 🥰🤗😘

Your experience is shared by just about every horse owner. Even experienced horse people get fooled now and then. But, fortunately, Black Jack, despite his troubles, is a good horse for a beginner. He’s quiet, doesn’t fuss when tied up, lets you work around him brushing and cleaning his feet, and it sounds like he has been cooperative when being examined by the vet. He trailers and is good with the farrier. I believe he is a trained horse, and I still believe he will become sound enough for pleasure riding. It is just going to take time. Bucking under saddle always has a reason, pain being highest on the list from poor fitting saddles which are often placed right on top of their shoulder blades, to pinching girths and crooked riders. Then there is kissing spine, displaced vertebrae, lack of muscle. People who lie about the horse they are trying to sell typically do not even consider the horse’s comfort, and then wonder why the horse acts out. You are wise to have an experienced rider check him out first, but from what I have seen of him, I think he will be a great horse once he is sound enough to ride.

I had a PPE and a “trainer” who didn’t know what she was doing. I was the fourth person to own Scooby in a year. If you don't mind, i have a couple questions...
Lesson horses often come from diverse backgrounds and are ridden by students who would not be consistent in their riding techniques (including doing a lot of wrong behaviors).
      1) how do trainers ensure that those horses' training and responses remain good and reliable?
      2) How "easy" should a horse be to ride for beginners? How normal is it that new students would need to exert a lot of control and do a lot of kicking as they are just trying to learn how to sit, steer, and trot a horse?
      What is considered normal?

You can of course be sued, but it is in no way illegal to tell the truth about these people. Being sued is not the same as being convicted, & if you have evidence (& they have none---where's that bill of sale from the "cowboy?" Can they produce any kids who had lessons on him?) chances are they wouldn't sue b/c they know & a lawyer would know they don't have a case. People do this b/c they get away with it, but I understand just wanting to put the unpleasantness behind, take care of B.J., and move forward. Next time, though, do bring a vet & a trainer out to take a look at any horse in which you are interested.

He sure is pretty and maybe, just maybe, the tendon will heal well and he can be used for quiet rides either on the trail or in the pasture. I want to add something...ALL horses buck. ALL horses spook. You will not ever find a perfectly bombproof horse and it is important to approach every potential sale with that knowledge. Once you have a horse, then you start work on training. The purchase price is just the beginning. Good luck to Black Jack and you. This will be okay and you may ride him in the future or find another suitable horse for yourself.

They buy horses from out of the slaughter pipeline, some they are able to save and rehabilitate and send them on to their forever home. Others are so injured/sick/old or otherwise in a state where the best course of action is "the last act of kindness" where they humanely euthanize these horses with all the love and care that particular individual needs during the process.

When one woman came to look at my gelding, I asked her if she had any questions and she said, "Nope! I think your ad covered all of it." Unfortunately, one buyer flipped one of my horses a month later and sold her for 3x what she had paid. @@HorseTaleswithBlackJack I think it's a good thing overall to have a second set of eyes when you go looking as the other person might notice that you don't.
One example I have from my own life was decades ago. A friend of mine wanted to get a surprise gift for her young teenage daughter who had been riding with me for a year or so. So we started looking for a kid gentle horse for her.
One of the very first ones we looked at was in a pen with another horse. When we went out to see the horse, he immediately turned his butt to us. The owner said that she would go and get some grain to catch him. So meanwhile I'm trying to get to the horse's head to even see if he was friendly, he was having none of it. But the other horse was willing to come up and say hi and get petted. So I wordlessly shook my head on the first horse to my friend without the owner seeing me. When the owner came back with grain, I asked if the other horse was for sale. "No, he's my husband's horse, he's not for sale."
This wasn't an unusual experience at the time. All I could think of was who would buy that horse as a kid's horse and discover afterward, he wasn't. In the woman's defense, I don't think she knew much about horses herself as I suspect that it was her husband's hobby, not hers.
We eventually found the right horse for her daughter after I crawled all over her and crawled under her belly without her moving an inch. It was a great partnership for both of them until the family moved out of state for a job transfer and couldn't take her with them.

Regarding “trusting Black Jack,” don’t be so quick to assume that he won’t be safe for you. Has he ever been aggressive towards you or attempted to hurt you? Horses often behave differently with different people. His “explosive behavior was likely due to pain. If has a good bond with you AND he feels safe with you, he will return your kindness. A horse that wants to hurt you will attempt to do so the minute you enter his space (stall, pen, or “striking distance”). That doesn’t seem like the Black Jack that you have shown us.
I grew up on a ranch with a family that had trained horses for generations. My own horse was one that had been labeled as dangerous. I literally saved him from being euthanized-I was 7 and nagged my father until he gave in and we adopted the horse. That horse hated the grown men in the ranch-they couldn’t get within 20 feet of him. However, he was like a puppy with us kids and with my stepmother, who had never been around horses before. We were the ones to care for him until he learned to feel safe. It turned out that he had been violently abused by the man that owned him before us. As a result, he was severely traumatized and associated men with pain-he was defending himself. Once we got him to a place where he felt safe and secure, he slowly began to trust the men in the family, as long as they didn’t try to bully him, he was fine.
When I got old enough to learn to train, my uncles decided that I would work with “problem horses” because I had so much success with my horse. It’s dangerous work, but in my experience, horses lash out because they have been psychologically traumatized, they are in pain, or in rare cases they have had some kind of neurological illness or injury to their brain. I only saw the last scenario once, and it was heartbreaking because we couldn’t help him. We did try, but he’d survived encephalitis a few years earlier, and the necropsy revealed a lesion on his brain, which was likely the cause of his explosive outbursts.
Black Jack could have ended up at that auction for a number of reasons that had nothing to do with being dangerous. My guess is that he was chronically lame and his owners either didn’t have the money to pursue diagnosis and treatment, or they were simply ignorant and assumed the problem couldn’t be treated.
For now, just focus on building a loving, tightly bonded relationship with Black Jack while he is recovering. When you are cleared to start riding him, go slowly. Start in a pen-a round pen if that is available. Then, using a mounting block try just laying across his back and see how he responds-slowly work up to it. You don’t need to saddle him. You can bridle him if you want to, but a halter will be fine. Then lead him to the block and spend a while just petting him all over before you try to get on him. Pay attention to his body language and if he tenses up at any point, just pause and start petting him again. Chances are that if you have built a good relationship with him, he will stay relaxed. If you pay attention, he will communicate his boundaries to you-and it won’t be with a kick in the head. The more time you spend with him, the easy it will be for you to read his signals.
Now, when you go to get on the mounting block, watch what he does with his head, his ears, etc. If he shows any sign of aggression. Stop. Get a trainer. However, given the way he has behaved with you on camera, I don’t think he wants to hurt you. His skill set may be rusty, when it comes to riding, and a trainer might be helpful at that point. But get hung up on his history. He’s in a new place, with a new person, and he’s got a much better quality of life. THAT WILL IMPACT HIS BEHAVIOR in a positive way.
Regarding your mindset, understand that ANY HORSE WILL BUCK under the right set of circumstances-even those that are normally bombproof. In that regard, they are like cars-any car can get into a wreck. Does that mean you shouldn’t drive or ride in a car? No! It’s just something you have to make peace with if you are going to ride. One of the best horses I ever had bucked every time I rode him-it was like his warmup ritual. But once he got it out of his system, he was all business and we won our class every time I showed him. His bucking habit also made me a much better rider because I was no longer frightened that my horse might buck. I knew he would. At that point my job was to make sure we were in a space where we wouldn’t hurt anyone, and hold on. Once he got his bucking out of his system, he was rock-solid-reliable. I could even put small children on him. Some horses are just like that, and you’ll never change them. The best you can hope for is to live in harmony with them.
Good luck! I will look forward to watching your adventures with Black Jack unfold.

I'm only comforted by the fact that you came into BJ's life because you have definitely saved him. I also think his love for you has and will definitely enrich your life. But it was lucky that you found him because it was more likely that he would have ended up at another auction with dire consequences. In the UK everyone buying gets a 5 grade vetting before purchase even from friends unless of course you're buying something as a companion and know the horse's limits. Some even get a full spinal x-ray as everyone now realises what a huge issue kissing spine is. Our yard manager has just had a full body scan on his horse at a horse hospital which is about 40 scans and has answered many questions about the way she goes. It cost abut £900 but she's insured. She's 14 and the prognosis is that she fine for low level dressage, no collection and hacking.

Please develope a relationship with a trainer or someone really knowledgeable to help you. A beginner/novice (i wouldn't even shop alone) should never buy alone. @@HorseTaleswithBlackJack There are ethical sellers out there. I raised Connemara ponies for a few years prior to the pandemic. In that community, we all know or have heard of the other breeders. If they're not ethical, they don't stay long. (BTW I never made any money on my ponies, a good home was the most important thing to me. They all ended up in amazing homes, although I did have one that the buyer wasn't who she proclaimed to be. So he was sold on to another buyer who helped him overcome the bad experiences he had and now he's a joy to his new owner.)
I've also known of people who mistreat a well-loved horse after the purchase is completed. So it's not just the sellers that can be misleading but the buyers can be as well.

I’m going to make a generalized comment here. Please, I ask everyone to read through the entire comment before jumping on me and telling me that I’m wrong. I might be wrong, but this is just my experience
I grew up riding horses. This is in the 1960s. I was fortunate enough to be at a quarter horse barn where the horses were treated as all-around horses.
We did all kinds of things with them, from barrels, to trail riding, riding on the road, swimming them in the pond bareback, going to local 4-H horse shows, playing Cowboys and Indians games that involved capturing another person‘s horse by the bridle and making that horse’s rider jump up behind you double bareback. The horses not only tolerated all of our shenanigans, they seemed to thrive on it and to like the attention. They were enthusiastic participants.
The horses I rode were intelligent, sound, and had great temperaments and minds.
After that, I grew older, and for financial and personal reasons, was not around quarter horses very much for about 25 years.
When I was able to get into horses again, I had a child of my own. Naturally, I started looking at quarter horses. But I found that in in the 70s, 80s, and the early 1990s, things had changed a lot.
The quarter horse barns that I went to did not believe in horse turn out. They were afraid the horses would get the blemishes that a horse gets when he is turned out with a herd. Somehow, show people did not want that the minor wear-and-tear marks of outside living to show on a horse’s hide anymore.
Additionally, the new fashion was to make a quarter horse go so slowly that when trotting, they barely trotted. When cantering, they barely cantered. All of their beautiful movement, dexterity, and versatility seem to be gone. Horses were only used for specialized genres, such as, western pleasure, etc. No more versatility, only specialization.
I rode a number of these sequestered horses. It was like riding a dead cow. The horses were shut down emotionally, had no experience of life, other than arena riding, had little personality, had not been socialized to think through challenging situations out on their own, and basically were like riding an inanimate object.
I realize that a bunch of people will be inclined to jump in here and tell me that I am wrong.
Let me say it again: I love quarter horses. I always have. All I am doing is comparing the plight of many current quarter horses to the active types of quarter horses I grew up with.
At a number of barns, I have observed that the quarter horses are stalled 24/7. I could not understand that because they didn’t get to socialize with other horses. I knew that a quarter horse colt that stood in a stall for the three years I was at that barn. He was never allowed to come out, except if he went to a show , or if someone spent 20 minutes with him in an arena.
In a way, this has become normalized for people to see. It doesn’t surprise me that Blackjack was shuffled off to a stall after he bucked. What truly appalls me is that he had a serious infection that could’ve killed him for several months before a vet was called to see if pain or illness was the cause of the bucking.
I realize that there are a lot of people who breed quarter horses the old-fashioned way. They tend to refer to them as “ranch-bred” horses because they carry the foundation quarter horse bloodlines. They are raised in big pastures with their parents in herds. They learn how to run over rough ground. Those horses appear to be very athletic and capable of being very good using horses to me. I’m too old now to buy a horse, so I have not investigated further.
From an amateur point of view, please be aware that some people in the quarter horse world truly think that it’s normal to keep a horse in a stall, except when you’re riding them. I don’t think this is a good practice, no matter how you look at it. However, it’s possible that you may come upon this scenario if and when you go looking for a second horse.
I wish you the best of luck. Ideally, you will find someone trustworthy from whom to buy a second horse. They do exist. But too many people sell horses after buying them at auction and trying to flip them for a quick and unearned profit.
I’m pretty sure that that was what your former barn owner intended to do Blackjack. It just didn’t work out very well for him, so he got stuck with him for two years until he sold him to you. Had you not bought him, he would’ve ended up in Mexico at the slaughterhouse.

    • @HorseTaleswithBlackJack
      @HorseTaleswithBlackJack  หลายเดือนก่อน +8

What an interesting comment! I am not quite as old as you and I wasn’t able to be around horses when I was a child (mom was deathly allergic), but I certainly believe the possibility of what you wrote here. There was a guy at my old barn who had performance horses, and they were NEVER allowed in the pasture. I just didn’t understand it because even I know horses do best in a more natural environment with their horse friends. I was told they couldn’t risk them getting hurt. I felt so bad for those horses. At my new barn, the horses with stalls get to go out to pasture every day (right now it’s at night) so that’s much better. But my goal for Jack is to get him on 100% pasture once we see how his leg is going to do.
I also believe you’re right that the barn owner was simply intending to flip him, and it didn’t work out for him. I’m just so thankful Jack’s not at a slaughterhouse, which seems like a likely scenario for him. Zero chance of that now.

You speak 100% truth. I live in Germany and thank goodness Quarter horses are nearly 90% family owned horse with the people doing the same fun stuff with them as you did. I recently came across a video of a Quater horse pleasure show. I was so shocked to see ALL of the horses loping in such an almost standing speed and they all looked lame on the back legs because it just didn't look natural for them and was certainly causing them pain. I am so sad that horses are not always treated so good in the States. The laws are non existent and seeing all the auctions and slaughter is heartbreaking. I don't know anyone here in Germany that doesn't keep their horse til the last breath. The laws are very strict here. My best friend had to sadly have the last act of kindness done for her 32 year old Quaterhorse Joe last week, he was also my horse's best friend when they shared pastures at a stable where we were at the time. @@charlotterockel-kennedy8913 I am relieved to hear that things are different in Germany. And you are correct that making quarter horses perform with their heads, pulled down to their knees while barely moving their bodies is devastating to them physically. I have a good friend who was an equine massage specialist who worked on all kinds of breeds. She told me that the quarter horses she worked on were sore all over their bodies, so terribly sore that they would flinch when she touched them at first. She was able to give them temporary relief, but so many of them develop arthritis in their necks because they are not allowed to carry their heads and necks naturally. Quarter horses are the most numerous breed of horse in North America, so it’s hard to say how many horses suffer from this kind of training. Thanks for your reply.

Don't forget about the "round pens", heavily overused and people who use them consider them as turn out. They are not large enough for a horse to trot. We didn't have a large property but we had 3 and 5 acre fields where they could kick up their heels and have a good run. We also had woods where they would spend the hottest time of the day in summer. It seemed, to me, that they were quite happy and I could walk up to any one of them with a halter and they would just let me come. Whenever I sold one, I would only sell if the horse actually accepted the person and I had 1st refusal if they decided to sell at a future date along with permission to visit without an appointment.

It's so irresponsible of these people who sold you a horse while knowing the horse had issues, I mean that's not only bad for the horse that they didn't help the horse with whatever was going on, but by selling him to you knowing you had limited experience they put you in danger without even warning you or even caring, I'm sure once his issue's are helped he will really be a fantastic horse, atleast with you he has a chance as I'd hate to imagine his future or lack of if he'd have ended up back in the auction ring,
It really is frustrating that there's owners out there who would rather spend money on covering up a horse's health woes to fool others than spend the money on sorting them out for good, it's like they aren't willing to put in the time or effort, in your case it's someone you thought of as a friend that let you down and that's awful that they were willing to lie to you for a sale,

I was told when I was new to the horse world that ‘horse people are the best and the worst people you will ever meet, no in-between’. Over the years I have found this to be true time and time again. My gut feeling about Black Jack is that he is a solid, quiet horse. Once he heals, and I’m confident he will heal, I would definitely have him evaluated by an experienced rider/trainer. Unfortunately some trainers will take advantage of us too, tell you that your horse has x,y & z problems and offer to fix them, which can end up being a long, drawn out, expensive endeavor. So, I like to really ask around to find someone with a good reputation, I’d start asking now, before you even need a trainer. After I ask around and find some good options I like to have a few (3) or at the very least, a couple of evaluations done to see if each trainer is seeing the same issues. And I prefer that they are from outside facilities, not all from my barn, maybe just one from the barn where I’d board, the others I’d trailer to for an evaluation. I’ve found that shopping around ends up costing less than getting a trainer who wants to never fix the problem because it means he can keep charging you, again this can last years. Black Jack looks better already under your care, it’s nice that he checks in with you and says hi, not every horse does that, there’s something to say for a horse that cares.

I wish there were a horse court where one could hold bad horse traders accountable. Don’t give up on him just yet some injuries take a long, long time to be resolved. Keep faith in good veterinary advice and guidance. In the meanwhile if I were you I would continue to take lessons where you are and go onto discover more about yourself and what you ultimately really want. You say you would like to have a performance horse? What is your definition of a performance horse, barrels, stake bends, or dressage or jumping? You may find as your riding abilities continue to grow that so does what you expect your next horse to be capable of. I’m with you on the trail riding, great for the body, mind and soul.

Most remarkable lady. Quite a remarkable journey she had throughout her life. She was 70 plus years old when I watched her jump her horse over a mind- blowing jump made of what looked like telephone poles stacked up. (Real ones). I think they made a movie about her also which I must make a point of find it on line and watching it. I know I keep saying remarkable but that is exactly what she was, remarkable. Please, always do due diligence when buying a horse....on EVERYTHING. the sellern, the conditions the horse has been kept in. Have they been ridden regularly,if not, why not. Ask about the horse's history. Ask to see their papers if they're registered. Info regarding breeder should also be on those papers, research them. Ensure the seller allows you to see the horse under saddle, if possible with more than one rider. Ride them yourself. And ALWAYS have them fully vet checked, including blood work and X-rays.

@@HorseTaleswithBlackJack By any chance, did this vet happen to do a lot of business at that barn, perhaps even with the barn owner as a client? My first purchased horse, who was "quiet and perfect for a teenager", passed his vet check with flying colors despite having extensive arthritic changes at just six years old. After we left that barn, we later learned that nearly everyone who boarded at that facility knew the regular barn vet had been paid off to pass him. I subsequently have heard a disturbing number of similar stories from other people who've had similar experiences.
Also, be very, very leery of horses travel extensive distances to be sold (another red flag we didn't know at the time). Sometimes it's legitimately just a horse from an area with not much of a local market being moved to an area where there might be more interest, but at least as often, it's a horse with issues known to its local community being sold where nobody knows its real history.

It’s common for flippers to buy a horse at auction in one state, then trailer them vast distances to an auction in another state to sell them quickly.
I know several instances of this . In one case, the first auction was in Vermont, then the horse was sold in Michigan at auction. In another case, the horse was from Montana, and was taken to Illinois for the second auction.
