  • There were a TON of rumors surrounding Aurra Sing and Attack of the Clones back in the late 90s and early 2000s. I look back on those days very fondly. But why and how do Star Wars fans convince themselves certain things will happen in future stories? Today we explore exactly that.

    I was too young to be reading messages boards at the time, but I remember seeing her in art and comics and games like Star Wars Demolition or mods for Jedi Knight and wondering why she was so popular. Then rewatching Phantom Menace I spotted her shot in the podrace. That's probably when I realized the true power of the "if they're on screen they have an action figure and backstory" joke.

    To be fair, George Lucas specifically called her “an Emerging Character” at the time, and one of the fancy SW reference books included a doll of her. (The other one came with a Sebastian Shaw Jedi Anakin…) So it certainly seemed like there WERE bigger plans for her, but those got changed.

    I had no idea Aurra was speculated to appear in Attack of the Clones, this is new information to me. And yeah it really shows that not much has changed in Star Wars in 20 years since the prequels, we all love to think everything is building up to something hahaha. Like I get it with Jango, a bounty hunter, being a part the film, it's not unreasonable that more would be as well and Aurra was a prime candidate. I wonder of all the speculation is what prompted her appearance in The Clone Wars which made clear she had history with Jango and all that. I doubt it tbh but at the same time, it would be pretty cool and interesting.

    Interesting for Aurra to die as she lived - a cameo in another film. She came into existence as a cameo in The Phantom Menace and her death was first reported in a one-off line in Solo.

    I heard George Lucas did consider using Aurra Sing in Attack of the Clones, but realized this was another Boba Fett and he didn't want it to end the same way, so Zam Wessell was born. Zam was created to prevent killing a character unceremoniously that fans had grown attached to at random.

    • @rfrancis
      @rfrancis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This. I remember at the time that Aurra's popularity grew so much after TPM that George decided not to kill her off so soon in Ep. II. So Aurra got to live on for a long time (before being quickly killed off in passing mention in 'Solo'!)

    Hate to be that guy, but I don’t think both cases are comparable. Aurra was just an extra. Phasma was literally on the poster for both of her movies and heavily promoted. I think they should have truly continued her story outside of the movies instead of bringing her back just to die.

      To be fair, a number of characters are brought back just to die without doing much in their second movie: Boba Fett, Count Dooku, even Yoda!
      The real problem was that Phasma wasn't a very good character in TFA despite having a decently prominent role, and then after they fleshed out her character in other media, they killed her off TLJ without capitalizing on any of it. The worst part of it is that they actually made a mostly completed alternate death scene for her that actually did tie into her character, but then they didn't use it and went with the inferior scene instead!

    • @Dass_Jennir
      @Dass_Jennir 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Compucles true, but in those cases the characters hadn’t already “died” for the average spectator who doesn’t read/watch EU. Yeah fr, that alternate death scene was so much better and would have connected with the character presented in the Phasma novel.

    When EpII came out is was clear that Zam took her role, fans were not given a reason. But why would there be. Just a logistics or artistic choice.

    Contrary to Aurra Sing (a background character that had an expanded role after the fact), Phasma was positioned through marketing as a significant character. They even made a big deal out of the significance of casting Gwendolyn Christie in the role only to have her play a window dressing character that basically amounted to nothing. The general expectation was that something interesting would happen to her in The Last Jedi but instead of character development, all we got was a lot of disappointment. 🤷🏻‍♂️
