How cool would it look if you really could have a balrog miniature made of pure shadow?
I guess we'll never know.

That mislabelling is likely criminal, but the seller probably thinks he can get away with it because he knows how hard it is to prove it's the old formula of paint.
I’d love to give them the benefit of the doubt on it but after watching that brilliant comparison video, there’s no question really.
@@LizardofDoom This might be one to send to BlackBeltLawyer so that he can feature it in one of his vids about legalities in retail selling
That’s so frustrating!
I can understand why a small company would reuse packaging, it’s not great but understandable. But if they are passing off 3.0 as 4.0 that’s pretty dodgy.
When 4.0 dried it went from a wet smooth surface to a textured almost velvety surface. It felt like whatever particles were in there kinda stood up.
Anyway, great video, I’m sorry it didn’t work out like you’d hoped! 💜
That’s definitely not how this stuff dried. I’d love to give them the benefit of the doubt that they just had too many bottles ordered for 3.0 and filled them with 4.0. Buuuut I just can’t get over how similar it acts to 3.0 in your video and nothing like the 4.0 . It was worth the experiment but not worth the money! 😂 Thank you for your awesome video it was great research!
I'm convinced your actually using apple barrel craft paint from walmart.
I think the results would of been similar 😂
The texture of that paint and the way it behaves reminds me of the paints we used to use back in the day in Junior school that have an almost chalky grey appearance when dried
it is exactly that texture!
Yeah looks more like an AppleBarrel black.
I remember hearing that Black 2.0 was a much better choice for minis than 3.0 was. It may not have been quite as black, but was a better paint to use.
Black 3.0 sticker under the 4.0 sticker already sus... agreed on the scamming, though-- wish I coulda got to your first and directed you to Musou Black, which I had success with!!
Freakin' STUART!!
I didn’t go with musou because I’ve heard about the fumes causing headaches and I suffer from migraines anyway. But I think I may mask up and give it a go 🙂
@@LizardofDoomyeah I was coming here to direct you to musou as well. Easily the darkest paint you can buy (vantablack isn't even paint in the traditional sense)
Also, yeah don't seal it either. Best to use in recesses or if you can avoid touching it entirely it is suitable for general painting, such as display models on plinths (but is a pain to paint over unless you are extremely carefull)
I think how a camera works distorts the effect of these kinds of paint. That's why it never looks the same in person as it does online. And I'm sure companies also tweak the contrast setting to enhance the effect too. Never used it myself, but have seen examples of 3.0 and 4.0 in various art shops and it just looked like a very matte black. However, I have used Musou black, and while it does give a decent effect of absorbing light, and is waaaay better than 4.0, it is incredibly delicate. It has a powdery like finish that rubs off really easily and loses the light absorbing properties. I tried giving it an ultra matte coating, but that also ruins the light absorbing effect (the website says this will happen) but is still very very black. I guess it's intended for display pieces, but for gaming minis it's too delicate. At least that has been my experience.
Ouch. I have "real" 4.0 and this is definitely not what it behaves or looks like. It's not quite as dark as advertised but it's definitely darker than that, and it behaves and applies pretty much like a normal acrylic paint, though rather thick.
The worst part is the 4.0 label which is very clearly designed specifically for this purpose, the square bottle has a very different one.
at least you made a wicked Balrog
I had to click on this vid because a year ago I painted the same miniature and in a lot of ways it came out close to what you did. I didn't use fluorescent paint though and for the black sections I used a standard flat black with a grey drybrush to simulate ash like you would see on coals. Your Balrog still looks fantastic despite the paint swap which I feel should be outright illegal (bait and switch tactic?). I'm very glad you posted the video though not just to show your process in painting but also address the disappointment about the paint.
I've used black 3.0 without any issues on a semi rough surface for a telescope piece. As stated from many others in how dark the paint is black 3.0 was slightly darker than the shiny black paint. It does absorb some light which something I was looking for but not like vanta, not close enough as one would expect. The piece I painted using BLK 3.0 was a 48mm barrel that is used for DSLR's to attach to a telescope directly with no other adapters for prime focus. As others have stated that it does have a tendency to clump and become difficult to deal with when it is exposed to the air for a period of time. When I painted the barrel the paint went on fairly smoothly with no issues, and waited a day for it dry before applying a 2nd coat, and 3rd as well. But this was outside in my garage in an open area where the temperature was fairly consistent at around 15 C with little to no humidity, Arizona, roughly about a little over 6 months ago. I did have issues trying to reach into the barrel since I was using a brush vs air brush. The inside of the barrel before was a glossy black and this was the reason why I wanted to paint it using BLK3.0 . I do from time to time post my experiments or findings on Instagram, and I did post this on Insta. I was planning on buying BLK4.0 but decided to hold off because I got a bit side tracked with looking into making a remix version of BLK3.0 with some additives of my own. The paint does work but I think it depends on the application to the type of material as well. I was going to use it on some of my 3D printings but did not get around to it because I also have work, school, and I go to baseball games, lol.
While the Semple Heresy is a tragedy to be sure, I appreciate the tutorial on how to paint fire. I will definitely be referring back to this video when I have some to paint.
Bonus little tutorial in the middle there 😂
Yeah. Pretty much the same experience with me. It should be pitch black with little to no light bouncing off, but it wasn’t like that at all. It came out looking similar to a chalkboard.
Also, a big red flag was that on the site they were like “Hey, soooo when you order this paint, we don’t exactly know when you’re gonna get it. Could be weeks, could be months. But no refunds when we send it!”. You’d think that they would have bottles of this stuff all ready to be shipped out, but nope!
They sent it to me literally on the 28 day mark. What’s their policy? No refunds after 28 days. 😐
@ Yeah. Semple puts the Artist in “Con Artist”.
Good luck on the e-mail. I had issues with my paint, and they never got back to me about it
i fear the same thing is happening to me
It's definitely worth noting that Vantablack is not really suitable for miniature art - it's fragile, impossible to seal, toxic, and ridiculously expensive, and the lack of depth perception means once you apply it you lose the ability to apply more - and any paint that could replicate the effects would necessarily be similar. I've tried Musou black and it's closer to black 3.0 than the infinite void of space.
Honestly, my experience has been that if you want to do black, your best bet is to paint false lighting onto the miniature to trick people into thinking it's darker than it is in areas, but that's certainly not easy and it still won't give you that zero depth perception look.
Still, at least the balrog looks cool in that ultra-matte finish
Your reply plus this and other review vids saved me a bit of money. I've been coming to this conclusion and you just cast the final vote. Thanks.
Really enjoyed your evaluation of this product. Looking forward to seeing your follow up of this expensive paint. 3.0 4.0 or whatever. Best wishes to you and your family. Keep the information coming! I’m watching and enjoying your content.
Thank you very much, best wishes to you and yours too, I’m glad you’re here!
Max is over here getting that tar through an airbrush even somewhat consistently while I struggle to get actual airbrush primer for longer than a handful of infantry models before having to deep clean and not even with even coverage. Lol 😭
Not to brag but using only water too no airbrush thinner or flow improver 😂
@LizardofDoom Yes, I took note of that. Lol! I'm pretty sure it's mostly an equipment thing. I'm still using a cheap beginner airbrush and a small portable compressor that likely has less than ideal pressure. At some point very soon, I'm going to upgrade both, but I still feel like it's a bit excessive how often I have issues with it. I did notice my nozzle isn't perfectly centered, I suppose that contributes, but it's not like making contact on one side or anything.
@@shaunperron7080 I think you’re quite possibly right on the money there, when I upgraded the airbrush I did notice a big difference clog wise. Some times I can get through a solid session and not have to do any “proper” cleaning, just running water through it between colours.
@@shaunperron7080 Reading your deep clean comment, I want to jump in to add my favourite airbrushing tip: Never pull the needle out the back of the airbrush. You'll pull wet paint through the middle, it'll dry, clogging your trigger, and requiring all those deep cleans.
On cheaper airbrushes you may not have a choice, but on a better one, always take the needle out the front.
@skynes That's helpful, I am able to do that on my current brush, and I'll keep it in mind. However, that's not the issue that I'm having. It's more just sporadic, but more often than not, nozzle clogging mid-use. Frequently only after 1-3 models, though there are days when I get a decent amount of time from it. I am pretty consistent with how I thin the paint/primer, so I don't think it's that. Hopefully, I'll have better results from a better quality setup in the future, I suspect it's more the compressor than the brush, but I'm sure the off-center construction contributes.
I look forward to a follow-up video after you have an opportunity to reach out to the manufacturer… Will they deny or pretend it was some kind of mistake?
Regardless, I enjoyed the video. Thanks. 😊
Currently silence on the matter which appears to be the experience of a lot of customers, the follow up will be in a video where i use the REAL blackest paint you can buy :)
@@LizardofDoom, if they’re not responding, are you able to perhaps do a chargeback with your credit card, obviously it is fraudulent false representation.
I look forward to seeing your follow up video with the REAL blackest black! 🤘
credit card charge back and fraud claim per your location's laws.
I definately want to see what this leads to. I had been planning on getting this, because f kapoor i want cool paint. Hopefully this gets resolved, glad I didn't buy it yet but still holding out hope I can get the paint.
The same thing happened to me!!! I got mine in the mail this week and was so excited, until I saw the pink writing behind that label😢. I sent an email and hopefully they respond. Might also make a video abt it too so more ppl r aware
@@radcatdraw they never responded to me but luckily I sent a refund request to my bank saying it’s a scam and got the money back!
I like your idea of the dragon with neon paint. It makes the matte black disappear. I would be trying to get my money back for sure. Shame on them. You handled this very well (at least on camera, no curse words. LOL)
I do think the dragon is awesome with the contrast of neon and other paints. I'm sure with the correct paint, it would have been off the charts awesome.
I’ve sent a very polite “what the hells going on?” Email for now but we’ll see what he says in reply 😂
It was a really cool concept, too bad about the paint. Hope you are able to do the idea justice one day!
That's disappointing. Cool idea for the Balrog, though. I hope you find a deeper black and give it another go.
7:00 , that should have been an indicator of your hardship to come ,versol/terpertine (paint thinner)would have done better i think.
I think you’re right but I was trying to follow the instructions from the company themselves
Honestly the Colour Forge Matt Black spray would have given you a very close result!! It’s great stuff, and very very Matt!!
I tried to get some to prime these and I usually use that to prime with but unfortunately one of the stores near me has weird opening times and the other one that stocks it was out of stock
I had the idea to use this paint for the cloaks of gaunts ghosts. Was very disappointed with the result, mean spirited marketing trick
I’ll be trying musou black in the near future and I’m hoping for better results 🙂
Yea it took me 4 months to get my order for some reason, I had to file a dispute for them to ship my items and then I was jipped half of my order, so I filed a chargeback
Turns out it 100% is a scam so many people have reached out with experiences like yours
@@LizardofDoom just peeled my bottle label off and the it’s the printed bottle that says 3.0, ou I’m so mad rn, I’m just glad I filed a chargeback and won
@@JacksonSchröder can confirm from others who have experienced this it’s not just relabelled empty bottles it is old stock of 3.0
Wow, I've bought simple black acrylic glass paint from deco Art that is like 10x blacker t...wow
Yeah…… 😂
That's really disappointing :/ great video though, and the models still look cool
Im happy to play a game with them as they are but I won’t be showing them off any time soon 😂
IMO it's not even that nice of a black but your neon flames look amazing
Thank you mate, shame about the black but I’ll be trying musou black soon
@@LizardofDoom oh very nice I hope that turns out better for you
Also wishing you the best on your venture.

Hopefully you'll get some justice for this scam you've been put through :(
I’ve been sent some evidence by other people that have been scammed too, it’s not just me going mad 😂
@@LizardofDoomdid you get it directly from their shop or did you purchase from a 3rd party?
@@VixenIcaza directly from their web store and received it a month later, some people have been given relabelled 3.0 and some people have even waited six months and received nothing arriving and no replies from the customer support.
Just so you know, if its anything like Black 3.0 (which i used on my tau stealth suits) after a while if you havent sealed it, it crystalises into large white blobs. As you can imagine...i had alot of fun having to re-stealth my suits (sarcasm included)
Oh so it’s even more of a scam than I thought 😂
@@LizardofDoom yeah you could say that XD
Interesting experiment with the black.
Hope they you send you some proper 4 out!
Interesting ... I have been looking for a black black for some time, at least I can knock this one off the list
I think I’m going to try musou black soon and it’ll be an interesting comparison 🙂
@@LizardofDoom I shall let you do all the work for me 🤣
That's really disappointing. How many reveals of even black 2 and black 3 where just cemera tricks.
@@itshaka3813 I’m betting a lot. I will be doing a video at some point with musou black so I hope that comes out a lot better 🙂
Dunno, I feel like Chaos Black from the rattle can might actually look blacker than this Black 4. Sorry to hear you got scammed. :(
Still a very cool fire effect!
I’ve had so many people reach out to me 100% a scam
I just thought up an Orc 40k diorama where this product would help with the forced prospective. Thank you for sharing the experience
There will be a video on musou black coming soon if that helps too 🙂
what is that white paint that covered so well over black?
Vallejo white and a little bit of patience 🙂
I had the same experience a few years ago and wondered if I got a bad bottle or was doing something wrong, but your experience was exactly the same. 🙁
Very interesting that this is an ongoing problem and the product seems to be a bit of a scam in general
I bought the 3.0 waaaay back (i think I kickstarted it) with a similar idea in mind, but its really not great for miniatures, the way the pigments have to apply in a certain structure to create the "void" effect - unfortunately this is not a levelled paint, so the details get really blocked up when it works properly.
It's also super fragile, so not good for something that requires handling, and you can't varnish it without ruining the effect, since you then change the physical structure of the surface, and because its got that "fuzzy" texture, it attracts dust, so loses that effect with time anyway.
Its also terrible to photograph, particularly digitally, as the processors can't balance correctly when displayed on itself. As you showed, it looks better against a brighter backdrop, so *maybe* in a diorama setting with something (or someone *cough*Gandalf*cough*) can provide the light value contrast, but yeah, all in all, its an annoying waste of money for our hobby, imo.
I had fun airbrushing coke bottles and other stupid shit just for laughs, and I can see someone with talent could do interesting things with it, but I am not creative enough to work out what.
That said, I think to get it working at all, I had to mix roughly 1:1 paint and airbrush thinner in an empty vallejo style bottle and vortex mix the hell out of it in order to shoot it through an airbrush, and yeah, dozens of super thin coats.
I really have no idea about the bottle you got though. I'd like to give the benefit of the doubt, and say that they were just using up old stock, but genuinely no idea.
I should've said in all that that I really loved the concept for your model, it's a real shame you got screwed by the materials.
And as someone else mentioned, the fire tutorial was also pretty great.
You'll probably find that the black can be... Well, not reactivated as such, but damaged by water, so if you're so inclined, it wouldn't be too hard to remove it and finished using another black paint.
I've been interested in the Green Stuff World Maxx Darth black paint. Its sold with a lower light absorption number, and the writeup makes it seem like it's also more of a technical/special-effect paint, rather than a layer paint, but maybe/hopefully it's more appropriate for our hobby?
Maybe I'll take this as motivation to try.
That's very disappointing 😟
PS: It would be nice to see both paints most white and most black on one 3D object. Like a zebra 🦓😁 And hope there will be some interesting optical illusion. Or probably paint any actual illusion and find out will it have more "strength" to effect
I didn't know Russel Brand painted miniatures.
Not quite the compliment it used to be in light of recent scandals 😂
@@LizardofDoom We will start worrying if you change direction and start peddling alt-right conspiracies and anti vax nonsense. LOL. Also, a comment for the algorythm, enjoy:)
I actually quite like the sooty effect.
I don’t think it looks bad awful just not finished
Balrog.
How does it behave after a wash is applied over it? I'm not a fan of matt black myself I have to the proacryl one and it looks chalky to me. I find a gloss black looks aesthetically more pleasing
Anything you do to this paint afterwards ruins effect entirely and takes away any matt effect it had 😂
where did you buy this from? direct or not that is something that needs to be sorted out
Straight from the company unfortunately
Wow. That’s a horrible scam
Sorry that happened 😢
Thank you it’s just a little disappointing but I’m interested in the concept still and I’m going to try a different way of doing it 🙂
Not gonna lie, it looks just like ColourForge ^^'
Exactly 😂 in really poor lighting the effect kind of works, but that’s just not good enough!
Have yoi contacted them? Wpuld be curious to hear their explanation (and im sure it will be, oh the factory must have stuffed up!!!)
I have reached out but no reply yet
My husband bought this a long time ago. He uses it on the tanks he paints and has good luck with it. Albeit the ares he paints are miniscule compared to the dragon. The label...Disappointing Stuart did this. I smell a rat. I hope the dragon has fried rat for dinner.
I just got my Black 4.0 and opened it today and then realised it was a 3.0 video. I actually came here because I was searching to see if others had this issue and what they have been told by Culture Hustle. It seems dodgy and it is 25% more in cost. Have you heard back? I have seen people with other issues with the company and they never hear things back. It seems so dodgy.
I find CH might be a little shady. I placed an order over a month ago and it still hasn't been shipped. It was only after ordering did I realise the 3-10 delivery for international meant nothing, as they will take anywhere from a few days to a few months to ship it. They pretend to have a cancel button on the emails, but it isn't just text with no link. They don't want people actually complaining.
No reply from culture hustle, what a shock I know! But I have been reached out to by so many people who are in the same boat and some have been waiting six months with no reply or product tuning up!
Have you thought about trying Mushou black instead?
I have and probably will 🙂

This isnt black thats dark gray ? Gw black looks far darker ?
Unfortunately it is a scam and I’ve been sent evidence of other people being scammed by Stuart Semple too!
shame it didnt work
I’ll be trying musou black on some ghosties soon and I’m hoping for better results 🙂
The Anish Kapoor story is actually untrue and a story peddled by Semple. Vantablack is incredibly difficult to produce and Surrey Nanosystems is not a paint company, so they only agreed to let make it for one person, which just happens to be Anish Kapoor. Even then it’s only one type of Vantablack that Kapoor has access to, they’ve worked with Activision and BMW in the past to create works with Vantablack. I think your experience with Semple seems keeping in character with him
vantablack can barely be considered a paint really, its such a complicated chemical process that it would be prohibitively expensive and impractical for private artists to use, although the effect does live up to the hype
Very interesting! I’m glad you’ve said this, Semple brands himself as an artist for artists but appears to be a sales man for himself 😂
It's not a paint, it's a process of layering carbon nano tubes that captures light to make it as black as possible. You can't buy a bottle of it, it's done in a lab, it's essentially impossible to replicate as an individual at home but you can get close.
Also the Anish story is pretty true, the lab only works with him for art projects so it's kind of accurate but only if you ignore what vantablack actually is.
Boo
Boo indeed
Any feedback from @StuartSempleArt ?
Also, as others have already said, do a chargeback.
None whatsoever but a lot of people have reached out to me to say they’re in the same boat or they haven’t even received the product after 6 months
