Fake list. Santiago above Caracas? And we aren't in 90s anymore, Medelin is not so dangerous even in Colombia there are worse cities to live .

I have never been to Medellin but was surprised when it made the list I had heard good things about it
the short time I spent in Colombia the people were friendly and nicer then some of the cities in the USA
My wife is from Medellin, Colombia and I've been there a few times, I found the people to be extremely friendly, happy, and welcoming. the temperature in Medellin stays between 70 and 80 degrees all year around, the weather is amazing. I was there during Christmas a couple of years ago and there was a party going on all over the city, I don't think the creator of this video has been there, bringing Pablo Escobar into the equation is like bringing Charles Manson when talking about California, ridiculous, no doubt there's crime in Medellin but there is crime everywhere, specially in Latin America, you just have to use common sense.
I’m from Caracas. My city was a wonderful paradise to live some decades ago, now it’s a nightmare, that’s why I left. But let me correct something, Caracas climate IS PERFECT. You can mention anything bad about my city and I accept it, except for the climate. In fact, Caracas is called “the eternal spring city”. Temperatures are between 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit all year round.
Primavera eternal is like 5 cities in Latin America por lo menos. You got Medellin, Montevideo, Guatemala City, Guadalajara, Cuenca, etc

was there with a friend in '98.... relatively calm but could still be dangerous..... you have to know exactly where you are going though, cuz you run the risk of being in a dead end(no pun) and having to retrace your steps.... was alone and two guys went after what they thought was a money belt.... I yelled and started swinging.... they left me, I think
they were older and drunk..... but I had a hard time walking back a parallel way to where we were staying....
I was in Caracas in the late 80's it wasn't bad.
Hopefully it gets better. I have always wanted to visit Caracas and the rest of Venezuela. Always thought it was one of the most beautiful countries in the Americas.
Medellin and Santiago? Those are two of the most livable cities on the continent. Medellin absolutely rocks. I did my first bike race there and loved it. Also, most of the people in Medellin HATE anything about Pablo Escobar. Those tours are done by private companies, some are American. Ask a citizen there to go on that your with you and they may slap you.

I lived in Medellin for 7 months it’s not as bad as people say but it’s not as good either. Most foreigners only interact with the wealthy and educated in the city which is frankly similar to many other cities but you might get special attention because you are a foreigner and some people like that, but if you get into poorer areas and social circles you will find anti American sentiment and a desperation that most Americans are not used to.

I've been to Colombia and Peru as a solo female traveler and did not have any issues. I'd like to point out that if one researches coming to the US as a tourist they are warned about the rampant gun violence that we have. So keep that in mind.

You are correct. I've visited Peru many times and never felt threatened. My family is from there. Yet here in the US the people in general are more aggressive, meaner, and the high crime areas are way worse than in Peru. In Peru they might do a strong armed robbery or a smash and grab but here in the US they stick a gun in your face and even if you them your money they'll kill you. No joke.

I have been to Peru as a solo woman traveler also, the people were great. I had a great time.
PS The food is great there also.
Have you ever been to Medellín, Colombia? I'll go out in a limb and say no. The people of Medellín are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. This is also the cleanest city I have ever been to in Colombia. We travel to Colombia at least 3 times a year and always go to Medellín during each visit, along with other cities, but this is always a must and this where we plan to retire to in the next few years. The City of Eternal Spring has come along way from the Escobar days, the people are NOT proud of the fact that Escobar was there and make a concerted effort to avoid foreigners obsessive fascination with all things Pablo Escobar. I felt just as safe walking around and taking public transportation down there as I would here in the US. I will also add that I am not Colombian but an avid traveler and lover of Colombia, especially Medellín. Do yourself a favor and go for a visit, you will love it. And maybe before passing judgment on countries do some better research.
I seriously can't believe the gall of this video to suggest Medellin belongs on this kind of list. I can't stand when people do no current research on places they critique.

@@ReignMaker26 The "coffee triangle" is a treasure trove of sights, from coffee plantations to colonial artisan towns to thermal hot springs. The areas surrounding the 3 major cities (Pereira, Manizales, and Armenia) are almost limitless in activities. It's a hidden gem filled with breathtaking landscapes and the friendliest of people.
OMG thank you so much for your comment about Medellín. I'm not Colombian but I visit there often (pre covid). Nothing he mentioned sounded like the Medellin I've grown to love. What an insulting video! He could have mentioned the social inequality, the limited means of social mobility, the political corruption or the need for additional infrastructure, and I would have agreed, but instead he suckered punch a city that has worked hard to move ahead and is still doing so. As soon as their quarantine ends I'm booking a flight to Medellín. Hugs! 🤗
Sir, I am absolutely disgusted and offended by what you said about my beloved country Suriname. This place isn't "rough"and our water is PERFECTLY fine for consumption. We voted out our corrupt government, Identity theft isn't as common. Many MANY tourists that come here can't seem to get enough of us and always return. Why we don't have sandy beaches, we have an AMAZING rainforest and waterfalls galore. AND yes it rains throughout the year but significantly less from June - Mid November. Our country is full of different cultures and delicious food. One of the only places in the world where a synagogue and a mosque coexist peacefully next to each other. You have some nerve talking about people getting robbed at night when people in your country get murdered for the color of their skin. Crime is something that happens in every country.

I have been living in Medellin for 15 years and this video is horse crap especially the comments about cleanliness and trash. There is a reason that Travel and Leisure recently noted Medellin as the top city in the world for digital nomads. And as far as the Pablo Escobar tours go, the locals hate it and it is the foreigners who have the fascination with Pablo.

I am American and live in Medellín and been here for 3 years...while traveling throughout alot of So. America. Yeah I live in Laureles and have stayed in Itagui, centro and El Poblado...not sure why Medellín is on this list.
Im an American and travel to Medellin often. I can honestly say your version of how the city is is extremely out of character for Medellin. The city is beautiful. The people are some of the nicest people Ive ever met. To be honest, Medellin is my future home. No problems here at all.
I here the pollution is getting bad there. Soot accumulating on stationary surfaces. Due to low quality fuel from what I hear. Can you confirm this for me? Considering retirement there. Thanks in advance!
@@jamesballard6564 It’s in a valley. The smog does settle but it also rains almost daily and clean spring air filters in. I would say any big city in the US would fare worse than Medellin

Sounds like this person never visited these cities. I can't speak for other cities but Santiago is not as bad as he made it to be. There are some great neighborhoods. Of course there are shady ones as well, but you can find that in any major city. Take LA and NYC for example, if can cherry pick the worst neighborhoods in those cities and it'll look like hell on earth.

8 years living in medellin, never been robbed , assaulted, or feelt unsafe, you just need to have a little of common sense and you be ok. my father went to school here in the escobar years, he said it waa hell on earth back then but now its the best city to live in here in Colombia.

My wife is Colombian. I’ve spent a lot of time in Bogotá and found it friendly, scenic, historic and in general great. In many ways better than the US. And Medellin may be the best place to visit or live in Colombia. If you’re looking for bad or unsafe places, what about Rio de Janeiro or San Paulo Brazil??? As much as I love your videos, you totally missed it on this one.

They don't glamorize Escobar there. They sell items with his face and name and give tours to specific places because that's a big thing the "gringos" ask for
I am American and currently live in Natal Brazil. Been here two years. This is not true. None of this is true. I love this city! Beautiful beaches and great people. Wow I’m shocked. Before moving to Natal I lived in Santiago Chile. I’m not so sure about this food storage information. Santiago is fabulous!

I agree. I have liked watching these videos, as they “seem” informative, but this video, as well as several others, seem to have been hastily thrown together, and not very honest, as far as how life actually is in some of the mentioned cities. I’m beginning to think the guy who is putting these videos out there is just in it for making money. Probably sitting on a beach somewhere, counting the cash he makes from Googling places and throwing together a video every now and then.

I come to Bogota, Colombia once a month. And all the locals I talked to all love Medellin. I also been there once, and it is a lovely city.

La Paz is actually one of the safest cities, surrounded by beautiful mountains and with vallleys producing fruits and fresh produce. The south zone of the cities has tons of nice neighborhoods while downtown hosts a Spanish colonial city. I have no idea how the jail is relevant to anyone who is not locked up. Clearly, you have never been.

La Paz is one of the worst cities I've ever been to. Nothing there is pleasant. Restaurants are few and far between are practically soup kitchens. Shopping sucks.
Bolivia in general is about as bombed out as it gets, generally. It's unfortunate because the landscapes are spectacular.

I lived in Phoenix for 15 years and disagree with it being in your list. Most of Phoenix is nice and I did not encounter many homeless or much crime. I lived in one part, worked in another and had family living in another. All of those places were perfectly clean and safe areas to be. Every city over a million people will have some area that is of a dubious nature. I think you could put Tuscon in there in place of Phoenix.

We all pretty nice, the air and water is generally really fresh, the government isn't terribly corrupt or overbearing, there's poor people but not many are desperate enough to turn to crime. People don't mind doing daily business covered in dirt from work but they usually don't smell bad, and the worst of all is life is boring everyday.
No one wants to live here. It's basically prison.

I haven't travelled much bin South America. I've been to Rio, Buenos Aires, and Santiago Chile. I never felt safe in Rio, it's dangerous. Buenos Aires was beautiful, great food, but the economy was bad when I was there. Santiago was the best of the 3, great food, great climate and more friendly than the other two. Santiago reminded me of LA but cleaner.

If this was my first time watching your videos, I would never watch another one. I have found your past videos very entertaining and accurate enough to be believable. I would believe it was possible you had been there and experienced the culture of said city. I have lived in several of the cities and they are absolutely nothing like you described. Others than the possible crime that you will experience in every major city on the planet. If you find yourself walking through a distressed neighborhood wearing a big gold chain and a Rolex you will likely finish your day in the same circumstances and you would in any city on the planet. I know you have the ability to entertain and educate without the overt offensiveness. Let keep it old school, you know funny and snarky not offensive.

I wouldn't put Santiago on this list. It's actually a lovely city, feels a lot like Spain, has good mass transit, and is relatively safe. In multiple trips there I never experienced bad air quality. AFAIK, the food shortages were spotty and no worse than the toilet paper and canned food shortages in the US last year. Probably the best managed country in Latin America.

The people are really cool, unfortunately the government is horrible. That's why many of them moved out of the country. Every Venezuelan I've known are really good people, so sad the country is so messed up.

I live in Natal and I can tell you this is very exaggerated. Most things you talked about is in the poorer areas. The touristic and middle class areas are as safe as most parts of Brazil. And it is a great place for tourism.
I've lived here most of my life and never ever was I victim of a crime.
And I would suggest you to be a little more careful when saying that other peoples cities and countries "suck" or are "terrible places". Be polite, Sir.
My father traveled to many of those places in the 70's 80's and 90's as an international sales representative (for 35 years and 85 countries total worldwide), he told us about close calls on the street and robberies he's had. He brought back some unusual gifts for us kids everytime
Ive lived in suriname for well over 19 years and never in my life have i ever come into any issues with the water. If anything it tastes better than the tap water ive tasted in europe and is worlds away from the pool water that comes from the taps in america.
As for the crime, i doubt that walking alone at night in the middle of the city is safe in any country. Take it from someone who's never been physically assaulted here for literal years, but did get slapped by a bum in barcelona during the day in the 2 weeks i was there(take from that what you will).
The only thing you got right was the economy and the corruption. But for the most part, if you can secure a stable income, suriname is totally okay to live in

I was just there and it is a very beautiful city. Lots of high rises but also a lot of greenery. Lots of trees. The poorer parts in the mountains aren't as picturistic though.

@@johntziannis359 I think so. If it's your very first time stay in the El Poblado neighborhood. It's the richest and safest part of the city and from there you can travel around. Laureles neighborhood is also fairly safe. Downtown can get sketchy at night. Also the poorer Barrios are in the mountains. I personally wouldn't go there alone.

I was surprised to see Medellin, Colombia in this list. Why i say this? Well, it seems that Medellin's citizens are very proud of their city. You can find in here lots of videos describing the merits of Medellin, and can see its people telling the world how blessed they feel for living in such a wonderful city!
Been to Medellin many times. It's a great place. They have even cleaned up the former "slums" and modernized them into sustainable communities with utilities and services. There is a construction boom. Cranes everywhere. Highways being built, including a huge highway to the airport. This video was pure ignorance.

My wife is from Medellin, Colombia and I've been there a few times, I found the people to be extremely friendly, happy, and welcoming. the temperature in Medellin stays between 70 and 80 degrees all year around, the weather is amazing. I was there during Christmas a couple of years ago and there was a party going on all over the city, I don't think the creator of this video has been there, bringing Pablo Escobar into the equation is like bringing Charles Manson when talking about California, ridiculous, no doubt there's crime in Medellin but there is crime everywhere, specially in Latin America, you just have to use common sense.

I lived in Medellin Colombia for a couple of months and is one of the most beautiful places in the world, "El Patron" died over 20 years ago and the US has way more drug addicts than Colombia, you dont know what you are talking about, this video is very offensive and ignorant.

So I'm hearing a privileged American who's probably never been to these places yet judges them for issues that many large American cities have as well. MEDELLIN was safe when I went last February real nice place and most locals I talked to said they are not happy about the stigma and reputation Escobar gave their country.
It does have some really nice areas. They still have some straight-up scary parts. It is way better than it was 25 years ago. Back then the whole city was a nightmare.

We moved to Cuenca, Ecuador in February 2015. We feel safer here than we ever did in the USA.
I am from St. Louis and there are neighborhoods in the city here you would also not want to live due to violent crime. Violent crime has really become an issue in the U.S. in numerous other cities such as Chicago. People visting the U.S. need to also be carefull knowing where to stay away. I have never been to South America and also enjoyed reading the comments of your video from those that live in South America.

@@aj42k Intersting. The St. Louis city and St. Louis county government is not combined here and most of the tough neighborhoods are in the city that has a population now of only around 300,000. This is what makes St. Louis rank at the top in the U.S. based on a per capita basis. Regardless though anything can happen anywhere but the city has such a mix of good neighborhoods that are so close to high crime areas. It's really a struggle here trying to come up with ways to improve. On the News people in those neighborhoods talk of hearing gunfire throughout the night and even stray bullets are somtimes deadly.

Dude, I have lived in Ecuador for five years. ALMOST everything you said about Guayaquil is not true. Buy car, it’s around 10-12 HOURS to Colombia. It is filthy though. I live in Cuenca, prettier than anywhere in Hawaii, which I lived for a few years.

Ecuador is a wonderful place to live, and am sad to say, as I am a 100% permanent and totally disabled Navy vet, I have more civil liberties here. I'm sure you'll know what I mean by this but I think Briggs must have got his information from a serrano, you know the rivalry that exists. They all told me how bad Guayaquil was and when I went there to visit I saw it was nothing like they said then the costeños told me how bad Quito was so at that moment I figured it out and just had to laugh.
Visited Ecuador in 2017 on a whim. Didn’t visit Guayaquil, but Quito and the highland and Amazonian regions. It’s a beautiful country with wonderful people. On of my most favorite trips. Would love to go back and recommend it to friends all the time. The water quality issue is probably true. Probably would mess with a foreigner. We drank bottled water the entire time. Also took some getting used to not flushing your toilet paper because of the plumbing system.

What he said about Ecuador Guayaquil made me think. I have known a girl there now for almost 2 years, she is in the middle class. I met her on the internet, but then covid- 19 arrived so never got to meet her, at least so far. She has never described the city in this way, she has said it is crime, but you are safe as long as you stay away from certain parts of the city. They also have medical care.
I lived in Guayaquil in the late 1990s. It is not too bad. Like any large city in the world, certain neighborhoods are worse than others, and much of the city is relatively okay. I never felt in any real danger but you do need to be cautious as you would in NYC or LA or anywhere else in the world. Most people are very polite and the hospitality is top notch. I loved my two years in Ecuador.
Paramaribo is not a problem. This video is circumspect and I wonder if they actually traveled to these cities. I have been to paramaribo several times and found it safe and charming.

Can I just say I’m from Barranquilla, in Colombia. I’ve been to Medellin multiple times and it’s not that bad. The people are very friendly and they don’t all want to steal from you trust me. The streets there are getting extremely cleaner especially recently. Also if you ask most Colombians about Pablo Escobar and they probably won’t talk to you again, well at least all of the Colombians that I know.

I sailed around South America while in the US Navy. While valiantly fighting off prostitutes in defense of our country, I can tell you that Rio is pretty nasty, Lima was awesome, and most cities there have the same problems as American cities have.
I'm so very proud of you!!! Being able to dodge those hoards of whores...but I think you wandered around the tourist areas without really seeing much while in Rio. I've been there eight times and only once was I bothered with a pickpocket. Sure, there are putas in Copacabana, along with vendors selling all sorts of junk, i.e., plastic alligator toys, hot roasted peanuts, cacahuetes, tooth brushes, condoms? Ipanema and Leblon are a bit more upscale. It's a beautiful city, with many many problems. But....you should try New Orleans if you haven't already. Lots of putains, drunks, pickpockets, violence at any time. It's a fun city though. I've been there about one hundred times. Never been bothered. You looked military, short hair cut, non portuguese speaking....turista do navio....of course, you were a magnet for putas. I will write...it's fun to visit Rio and New Orleans, but living in those places is altogether a different idea. Glad you got back to the USA safely.....

I retired in medellin, my wife love this place and we been here for the last seven years, indeed we have enjoyed medellin, we had travel to other cities and have no problems, life is very cheap, we live very well here, the states is very expensive these days.
I disagree about Medellin. I really enjoyed the several months I spent there. I stayed in El Poblado, Envigado, Laureles and Estadio.

By the way I lived in a third world country for several years so I know both places very well. @@Acteaon Bogota is touristy? I have a friend who lives there she said she has to keep her money and phone hidden on her person at all times cuz people steal all the time. And apparently it’s like a normal thing to see people getting raped and assaulted in the streets. So sad. I guess in her section during the lockdowns they were only allowed to shop once a week they had certain sections of people that could only go at certain times. But I guess there are a lot of tourists there too. They really need to be careful. Get one of those backpacks that’s impossible for thieves to open. And protection.

Briggs, I teach history and geography in Ecuador. If one of my students presented a report like this in my class, I would be graceful and give them an Incomplete, so they could redeem their grade. Have you been to South America? If so, you would know most of what you offer as 'issues' are commonplace around the continent. Yes, there are challenges, but find me a place which does not. Your assessment of place, proximity and climate of Guayaquil are 100% off. Perhaps, it will be best you stick to campy assessments of places you truly know by having visited them.

I lived in Guayaquil Ecuador for 2 years. It never gets that cold there…ever. I think you have Guay confused with Quito. There are only 2 seasons, hot and hotter. It rains in the jungle every day but not in Guayaquil. That being said I wouldn’t recommend living there either.
I stopped there on the way back from the Galapagos. Big mistake. The other option was Quito, which was surprisingly nice.

Altough we have awful poor places and a terrible government, we are still a beautiful country with awesome landscapes, unique passion for sports and awesome food and people. Have you ever been to these cities? A few I would agree with your call, but others, I'd have to disagree. I have found Medellín to a very agreeable city and yes, it has a crime problem, but so does every large US city. We're not talking Canada here, but South America. I'd leave Medellín off the list. I'd also skip Santiago de Chile and Natal from the grunge list. Both are interesting cities with some problems to be sure, but I like both of them. Within Brazil, there are plenty of worse places to live than Natal. One other bit I have to quibble with is the climate in Guayaquil. It's hot. I think 30°C not the 30°F you insinuated. Heat in a house in Guayaquil? It would only have been useful during the last Ice Age. I'm thinking you are thinking Quito where a heater would come in handy, being around 9000 feet up. I will agree with you on Caracas, Valencia and Buenaventura. They're pretty far gone.

I have to disagree. I'm Canadian but I did encounter a bit of good natured ribbing about the USA in La Paz, but I loved the city. I felt safe, the food was good and found the people friendly. Santiago is also a very beautiful city. Walking around at 4am with no issues. Also had no issues with food or air quality. Definitely the most organized and civilized city in South America.
I have to disagree about your opinion on the USA. The USA is a great country, with countless job opportunities, awesome nightlife, and some of the biggest diversity within a country. The USA is not a place to make propaganda about, the USA is a place to praise for all stuff it has gifted to the world such as the internet, good military defense (for its allies), and fast food (You may say that is bad but admit it, you have eaten fast food at least once.). Making fun of the USA can cause 5% of the entire internet to turn on you. Hope you have learned your lesson and please stop making propaganda about the USA or I will start making propaganda about your country Canada. How would that feel?

First of all I live in Suriname. My parents came here from Amerika and my father has been here over 40 years. Suriname is not perfect but if you look at the things mentioned in this video about Suriname they are just minor things. For your information, the president he was talking about lost the election in May 2020 so we have a new president. I have lived here my whole life. Is it perfect, No. Is any country perfect? NO!!! When going to a new place, don't expect it to be the same as what you are used to but try to learn that every country and place is different.

Flint, Michigan
In 2014, officials failed to apply corrosion inhibitors to Flint’s water when it changed sources from the Detroit Water and Sewage Department to the Flint River. As a result, thousands of people were exposed to extremely dangerous levels of lead and bacteria. Officially, 90 people fell ill and 12 died. However, a later investigation found that 115 residents died from pneumonia at the time which actually could’ve been caused by waterborne bacteria in the area.
Now, years later, is Flint in the clear? The answer’s not simple. Flint switched back to Detroit’s system in 2015, but the damage had been done and lead was still very much present in the water supply. And per Michigan Radio in August 2019, “the state of Michigan warned city officials that Flint was in violation of the Safe Drinking Water Act because it failed to test water at enough homes with lead service lines or lead plumbing fixtures.” Because this crisis made national headlines, however, the water systems of Flint and Michigan have now become some of the most closely monitored in the country, so that’s something
