Great advice, Mark. Expanding on the language... I've found that if I open the conversation in the local language, and make a joke (in their language) like "My Spanish is terrible" before jumping to "Do you speak English", the locals really get a kick out of it.
I'm a South American that has lived for many years in North America. My wife, South American as well, always asks me, is their English any good? (like tour guides and such) and the answer has always been "not even close". Yeah, even the tourism people speak an English that can be best described as mediocre.
I am glad we can help show you the world. That is one of the best parts of making these videos. Being able to bring new parts of the world to fellow travelers. Big travel hug to you Chris!
"This wasn't fat Mark, this is skinny Mark"...lol! Great video - thank you for sharing all the wonderful, thoughtful advice. We would all be wiser travellers by listening to you, no matter where we are visiting.
You're in the South American country I most want to visit. Uruguay is very interesting for a lot of reasons. And it's a good point about South America is not all one thing. Saying, "I visited South America" is like saying, "I visited North America."
Ceviche in Lima, alpaca saltado on the Colca Canyon trek, and chicken heart skewers and cuy in Cuzco. The stories about food I ate in Peru were some of the stories I enjoyed telling the most to friends after I got back. :)

I have family over there but I've never really took the opportunity to experience the culture, so when I hopefully get my time in Spain I want to travel around South America just like my Spanish teacher did, thanks for the tips!

Argentinians and Uruguayans are meat and potato people. Rice and beans are not a staple, and are not eaten as in the Northern parts of South America and the Caribbean.
I suggest touring the Buenos Aires province in Argentina, which most tourists ignore. instead of just rushing to take the boat from BA city to Colonia or montevideo, try BA province which is actually bigger than the entire Uruguay and it's full of calm towns and coastal cities. Anything you find in Uruguay, you'll find it in BA province and even more =)
When we went on our Caribbean cruise honeymoon, there was actually a digital safe in our cabin where we could put any valuables in. I always put my wedding rings in there every time we made a stop at any country we visited because I was so afraid of losing them.
