    For cutting the grass I suggest getting a riding lawnmower you can also buy garden attachments for it so you can till and plow the soil for your garden space.

      Yeah, i'm leaning towards this one, but it's def an investment, cause they are pretty pricey.

      Well worth the money if it's in your budget. @@TheOrangeHomestead

    First time viewer, I thought I heard a Flemish accent and the weedpicking section of the video confirmed it :-)
    I would probably tackle the weeds in two ways:
    1. try to get your hands on cardboard and sheet mulch the part you're intending to turn into a veggie garden
    2. see if you have any neighbors or friends that can bring over a few sheep or goats to eat most of the grass. Challenge will be to protect your orange trees since goats will try to eat the lower branches as well.
    Good luck in any case, I'll have to go back and re-watch your other content.

    Those weeds are a good start to your compost heap

      @TheOrangeHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought you couldn't put weeds on your compost pile because the seeds supposedly go back into your garden creating more weeds?

    I am a single woman and have a property that is a similar size to yours. I have a ride-on mower to cut the grass and weeds around the orchard. I do not use a grass catcher. It leaves the mulch on top of the soil so the soil does not dry out so quickly during summer. I use the grass catcher on the mower when I mow the lawn around the house. When I mow the whole property, it takes 45 - 60 minutes. When I had a mower I had to push, it used to take the whole day!

      @TheOrangeHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, good suggestion. 45-60 is def better than the whole day. Something to take in consideration.

      A riding mower is a worthwhile expenditure for years to come. If you can’t afford that and go for a mower, there are mowers that also drive the wheels as well as turn the blade. These do not count totally on you as the push power! The suggestion to cut and leave the cuttings on the land is what I do for my land as it will all gradually break down and enrich your soil. Meanwhile it provides a mulch that deters weed growth…au naturel!

    Once you mow your lawn with the lawn mower and remove the first layer, sprinkle Feed and Weed (not the best idea), which will kill your weed but not the grass (works approximately 3-4 months).

    You may want to check out little Spanish farmstead on TH-cam, I feel like there are some parallels between their challenges and yours as far as the garden goes. Good luck with your bathroom reno.

    Re: Chicken coop In most areas the cold winds come from the north/northwest. The sun and warmth come from the south. An ideal spot would provide them with early morning sun and trees for afternoon shade.

    You will need 588 cubic yards of mulch to cover one half acre, which will help prevent weeds from growing. With the use of mulch, it will also help to keep the ground moist and cooler during the summer months.

    I just finished watching all your interesting videos. It made me really sad when you said when you take down the walls between the front rooms the tile floors will have gaps and the amazing floors will be gone. I love those beautiful floors. When ceilings are tall and rooms large it becomes very hard to heat the house. I grew up in the southern USA with 12 foot ceilings and big rooms. We were very cool in summer, but not very warm in winter. It does not look like you are currently living in the house? I may be confused, but I decided your lovely parents lived in another country, so you could not be staying with them. I have wondered about this the whole time I have watched all your videos. All the best from Memphis, TN, USA

    Great looking acre. I would invest in a zero turn lawn mower it will cut your mowing time in half. Cost about $3000 in U. S. Are you going to clean and paint the exterior fence walls. Great house and property

      We definitely are going to paint the exterior walls, it's an upcoming project. We're waiting for the weather to clear up a bit and get more dry. Thank you 🙏

      Keep grass trimmed all times ig will look so much better and neat,I would weed around the trees ,make a big circle and use some kind of border ,stones ,bricks etc and mulch around that !!I like an organized yard !!
      You definitely need a weed wacker

    Maybe you could use a strimmer?

    Your wild garden is supporting all sorts of beneficial insects and critters. I would be tempted to keep sections of it wild, maybe add a water source. What comes to mind is to plan your vegetable beds and lay down cardboard to start getting rid of growth, then put soil and manure on top and do no dig gardening. Then more cardboard and cover with bark mulch for pathways. The rest I would allow to grow wild but add wildflower seeds for beneficial insects which will help pollinate your lovely trees.

    Making progress! There is a lot of "sweat equity" going into your new place and I'm sure you will be happy with it in the long run. Just curious, how many languages do you speak?

    • @TheOrangeHomestead
      @TheOrangeHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a long term project, i'm looking forward to the progress 😁
      I speak Dutch/Flemish (mother tongue), English (fav language), Spanish and Portuguese (understand it, speaking goes a bit slower), French and German (basics, learned in school).
