I watched this entire video, which is out of character for me. I was just about to hit "save" to my "watch later" file. It hit me that I AM A CLUTTER SHIFTER! I have thousands of "watch laters" and I also reorganize my closets, storage, files, etc. Today, I have been politely confronted with this problem. I'm subscribing and I'm going to start watching this channel all the way through. Thank you!
I bet your parents are amazing people, Ronald. You are such a well spoken, empathetic, supportive, and caring individual. Thank you for being who you are.
I grew up in my mother’s hoarder house. If I learned anything during those 20 years, it was how to cram as much stuff into a space as possible. How to stack boxes to the ceiling so they wouldn’t fall for years, yet still every layer be reasonably accessible. How to turn the last months new mess into a box that could go in a pile. This is a fantastic skill, which is why everyone calls me when they need to move even though Im not particularly strong or own a truck. I can pack into one Uhaul what someone else would need 3 trips to move. But man its making shedding my inherited hoarding difficult. What someone else sees as too many xmas decorations I see as only half a box worth, after I’ve packed it properly.
@thekingoffailure9967 maybe try thinking of how beautiful empty space can look and how your stuff can breathe if it´s not crammed into a box so tightly... I mean, maybe stuff can get claustrophobic as well and can get squished and so on... maybe start there and soon you´ll enjoy not having everything boxed up so tightly? :) Best of luck!
That's my problem.. freezing. I see so much chaos that the only thing I can do is freeze. I live with people who love chaos and it's overwhelming for one person. Being a minimalist may solve it.
Stopping the clutter shifting is one of my 2024 goals. Find a permanent home for the things I need and removing the rest. I know with physical clutter gone, my mental clutter will already be clearer. I have started but it’s a slow process that I wish was quicker!
I totally sympathize with the wish to have it go quicker! At this point in my life I'm realizing that I often run from anything requiring patience. It's not good to be that way. I don't recommend it.
I started out with hoarding and then I went to organized hoarding and then I went to organized donating..It took 2 years to downsize 9 fully firnished rental houses...Emotionally better.
I had a place renting out a cute 1 bedroom 1 bathroom house with a garage for $350 a month Nice neighborhood..college town The renter has lived there for 14 years..Still.cannot get the rent paid on n time over the last almost 3 years Can't get the tenant to call me or talk to me. barely returns a text message so on March 3rd I signed a papers to sell the place I chose a buyer who will let him stay...for how long? Maybe the buyer will back out...If he doesn't.. I will list it..I offered it contract for deed 0% interest $410 mo for 5 years to the renter. He said it was too expensive..Retired military man on 100% disability. $3,500 month income good luck to my renter finding a place as inexpensive. I have been the nicest landlord anyone would ask to have..
T. K. Coleman recently came out with a book on emotional clutter and, from a quick skim read of the intro, I couldn’t relate. But the penny dropped at 3:00 where you say, “maybe if I delay when I have to think about it, I won’t have to deal with it.”
Oh gosh, this is so painfully right! It feels like we’re accomplishing something, but in reality it’s just occupying a different space. Thanks for the reminder, dear Ronald.
Lightbulb 💡 moment…Because my house is very tidy and organized,it’s prevented me from purging deeper. I have a lot of stuff and I’m tired of shuffling things around often purchasing nice new containers . No wonder my home still feels too full, tidy or not!!!! Thanks Ronald✨
I'm doing your worksheet right now and I wrote down all the discovery questions in my journal. Before I could even begin to answer them, it hit me like a ton of bricks and I wrote in my diary, " just realized I am letting memories of past joy steal my present and future joy." Thank you so much for what you do and for this video.
I always said, If I go with storage boxes, that means my house is cluttered ... Own what you use, but use what you own. I have this thought of dying suddenly, I won't want my husband or family to go through my whole mess and cluttered house. So far I learned to not over consume, to not buy things on "sale", and mostly to let go. I'm working on everything, every room a little by a little. Keep going everyone. Thank you Ronald, your videos are tremendously helpful, and shows how decluttered your mind and space is ! 😊😊😊
I've been blessed with a career of helping people organize and declutter - yet I hung on to every word you said as if this was a brand new concept to me! You are a talented and gifted individual! Keep going to that 1,000,000th-person goal! 🌟
OMG!!! I so needed this today. I have been shifting clutter far tooo long now. After viewing this I went back and was able to let go of more unnecessary stuff. Thank you, bless you.“ Do I need, value & enjoy using it.” Powerful. THANKS!!!
My mental declutter, in the form of diaries, has turned into mental clutter once again. What do I do with it all? I don't want anyone to read it, but I'm not sure if I want to just throw it out either.
I’ve been breaking my habit of clutter shifting by letting go of so much stuff! Now that I know what this is I have noticed that my husband is really good at clutter shifting! He is very open to change so I am going to share this video with him! Thank you!
Wondering! I’m happy that you’ve been working to break this habit. I’m confident your husband will join you. You say he’s open to change so that awesome!
Great presentation. I love your delivery style. I didn't have to rewind, slow it down, or even take notes. Your simple background, simple graphics, and steady pace really made the content of your video stand out. Subscribed.
Wow, thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it and welcome! Happy to have you onboard as a subscriber. If you ever have questions don’t hesitate to reach out!
Right? He manages to keep it slow and simple, but not condescending at all. His videos always feel like talking to a really good friend and mentor. Maybe this one more than most lol. How did he know I'm a clutter shifter?? 😄
@molsauce I absolutely agree! I struggle with distractions (visual/aural/going off at a verbal tangent) and I love Ronald's style of presenting. All relevant and holds my attention throughout!
This video was VERY helpful. I am guilty of freezing. I have an entire house, consisting of the clutter of 20 years, that I have to let go. The house has to be sold soon and there is simply no room in my new place. I'm moving from 1300 sf to 200 sf. That's a drastic change that requires drastic decluttering.
@M.Campbell That definitely *is* a drastic change! If the 200 square foot place is near where you are moving from, maybe try picking several items that you know you will truly need at your new home, and bring those there to start. See how the place looks. Then repeat for your clothing, footwear, toiletries. Bring the amount you might pack for a 1 week trip. Leave everything else at the old house. Sort through pictures and momentos, picking through your top favorites. Depending on the size of the momentos, make a decision on how many you can bring. Then bring those over to the new place. Bring 1 or 2 towels, just 1 set of sheets/bedding. Bring 1 place setting of dishes (or 2 if you are living with someone). If you plan to have guests in the future, you can get paper plates and plastic cutlery, instead of wasting your precious space on dishes and silverware that will get used infrequently. If your budget allows, consider getting a small storage unit to keep *important* things you just could not part with. Everything else should be donated, given away for free on Facebook marketplace, or sharing on a neighborhood website like Nextdoor. Good luck!! 😊
My old dad used to say "there should be a place for everything, and everything in it's place". I didn't know when I was young just how far reaching this statement really is!
Love your videos Ronald Banks! You give us such simple truths and yet somehow you put it all out there in such a way that I think "Wow! I never thought about approaching my life that way before!" It feels like a roadmap that I can follow! You also have such a positive motivational approach that as soon as I finish watching one of your videos I think "I'm getting up from my chair and starting right now!" Ha ha. I have to be careful when I watch your videos because I start wanting to simplify and declutter my life right at that minute and change my schedule at that moment to work on this part of my life! Thank you for such a positive "You can do it" approach. I am scheduling a little bit of decluttering each day now -just like you said "One section at a time!" It doesn't feel overwhelming this way! Thank you!
This made my day friend! Thank you for your kind words, love and support. It truly means a lot knowing that my work is making an impact like this. I appreciate you and I’m excited about the future. Looking forward to growing more on this journey with you!
Wow, you NAILED it! Your wisdom and insight into the issues behind our clutter is really next level, this brought so much clarity to why my efforts have failed, thank you!
I’m very happy that I was able to uncover this for you my friend. It was my reality and I’m sure many others can relate. However it’s a habit that is breakable and you got this!
Wow! Senior citizen here with two homes and lots of stuff. I am on the surface and in some hidden areas very neat and organized but I can get areas of clutter. My sewing room for example. Basement for example. I have never heard the term clutter shifting. It is me!!! Thank you for this insight! I have got it!!
So glad! 🙌🏾 “The Simple Truth” use to be the name of my newsletter a few years ago before I rebranded everything to The Clarity Club. So I’m happy this idea remains. Thanks for watching my friend!
Thank you!! I'm really good at "Organizing Physical Clutter" in hindsight it accomplishes absolutely nothing. Plus, it's all a waste of my precious time and energy! From here on out I'll be ruthlessly decluttering.
One of the hardest things I've ever dealt with is decluttering. 12 years now I've had to declutter other's mess & my own. The past couple months has really been & eye opener. Watching people be like scavengers, getting defensive & watching people just carry off belongings of the deceased person. WOW!! I was floored not once twice this happen within a 2 months of each other. That was the eye opener for me that sent me over the edge. Since then, I've not let the grass grow under my feet lollll😂 I've yardsaled, gave away & donated & thrown away. 30 years of things finally gone that wasn't used in 14 yrs it was time. The hardest part was the sentimental attachment I had to a lot of those things. When going through & separating I cried so many tears. It felt like I was throwing them out too when placing items in boxes or trash. I literally suffered tremendous separation anxiety decluttering. The point is I did it😊 12 x 20 building, 8 skids in garage stacked high & years of collective items all gone😊❤ The shifting of clutter is the hardest of all for I can contest to that! As of now I'm in the home stretch of finishing the last of hoarded things hidden in the house lolll😊 Whewwww! I feel so free & actually happy.
Thank you so much for sharing your story. Yes! This is what people are avoiding. They are holding onto the things to avoid dealing with their feelings. I've heard it said that clutter is just piles of unprocessed emotions. This is especially true of inherited items. I had a similar experience after inheriting my dad's entire house full of stuff. Good for you for having the courage to cry, grieve, and let go. I'm sure you feel lighter physically and emotionally.
Wow you are absolutely talking to me, I literally just moved stuff from one side of the room to the other 😂. Ok now I’m gonna regroup. Thank you so much . I really appreciate this the Spirit will move you when it is your time,so it must be mine💛🦋
Great video! There are so many other videos out there just around the subject of decluttering your space in your home. I love your approach to decluttering your thoughts too. I've recently started to write again and it's so helpful for me to keep focus on my goals. If you want to go another step further, another way to "declutter" is detoxing your body.
Hi just a quick note to say while I never meet her; I am sure your Mother was a wonderful woman. I base that on the remarkable job she did raising you young man. You are an exceptional human being ❤
Finally! It took goo@le long enough to read my mind & find you for me.🤭 i shifted most things to boxes, unfortunately traumatic tragedys just seem to never end. I'm stuck. I woke up this morning, so that's a start.
A long time ago, I realized that I was clutter shifter. This is the first time I am hearing this title. I was and still am great at organizing, now I am even more aware not to clutter shift, but it does still happen. Everyone once in a while I binge on decluttering videos to help me continue to find things I no longer need. Yesterday, I needed something in my sewing box which I rarely go through...and found quite few items that I can give away. Now I will go back take a closer look. I always enjoy Ronald's videos because he is so calm and his own being seems so pure and uncluttered.
I came looking for organization\decluttering ideas and videos and now find myself literally tearing up when you started speaking about mental clutter. Made me realize the current state of my home is reflecting the state my mind has been in for the last three years.
You have a calming vibe and I'm here for it. I did want to say that in order to declutter I actually had to indulge in clutter-shifting. Did it make decluttering take a LONG time? Yes, it did. But without creating this movement, the de-cluttering would have never happened. For people who have insecurity stemming from not having had enough growing up (for example), this is not a "lazy" methodology. I assure you. We need to be gentle with ourselves (and others) through this process, so as not to shame or discourage. Some people need to do this in stages that might look very different than what you're teaching. Maybe we can leave room for all methodologies to be valuable and valid, because healing is so individual. Much love!
WOW I had no idea I am a clutter shifter. Everything you said in this video it what a do and how I feel. THANK YOU for getting me started to think differently and start to get rid of things I don't need.
I just came upon your channel. I absolutely ❤️ your calming voice that is confident and filled with wisdom. I’ve never heard you before but I just subscribed. Blessings to you Sir
Welcome to my corner of the internet my friend. Happy you found me and decided to subscribe. I’m looking forward to growing and learning on this journey with you.
Clutter shifting perfectly describes what I do and have been doing. My mother even more so. I just didn’t have a name for it but I see it now. I actually have been following your 3 step plan. Trying to help my mother declutter, downsize, and get rid of stuff helped jolt me into realizing what I needed to do. I’m determined to get there way before she does.
Thank you my friend! I’m glad you enjoyed this video. Also regarding the uncluttered speech… that’s all very intentional my friend. I’m glad you picked up on it. Keep growing on your journey!
On your last question: [paraphrase] ... "do you promise to ...?" 'I do' . I really like this no-nonsense approach - straight to the core: "This is what works, AND it won't cramp your style". Keep your core values. Liked, subscribed, notifications ON. Thank you so much. And thank you for not telling me to buy cheap plastic baskets for dishwasher pods!!! My hero - don't leave me!!! 😊
I was immediately captivated by your intro about Tetris ❤ My mom was a great Tetris player and had excellent organization which I'm trying to learn also, but it doesn't come naturally at the moment. Your tips will help us a lot, great content and now subscribed!
Beautiful advice. I tend to think of physical and mental clutter as separate things, although perhaps they aren't. I've come a long way with my physical clutter. I can't think properly in a messy environment, so I'm concentrating on that first.😊
Thank you. I just started my minimalism journey (and channel to document it) and I’ve been STRUGGLING and flailing around. I’ve been resisting methods and processes. Your video is the first one that’s helped me calm down and clearly take stock of what I’ve been doing wrong and how to actually make progress. Thank you.
You got this! I’m rooting for you. I’m happy this video brought you clarity and helped you calm down. If you need additional help or have questions don’t hesitate to ask.
Excellent strategies and advice…..the creativity and your clear calm approach and lovely smile kept me…..along with your Mum playing tetris with stuff……that rings true to me too.
How did a declutterring video make me want to cry 🥺😭💕 All I thought I was going to get was how to stop moving my mess from one spot to another but I got soo much more. Thank you. I recently started back writing and it definitely helps create mental space 🥹
I love how your response to this video was so authentic. Thank you for sharing and I’m very happy that you got so much from this conversation. Keep pushing forward on your journey!
Since starting to declutter, i have had a lot of success. But i have also reached a point where most of what i have been doing is "stuff shuffling". Yes, it's a temporary success. Eventually, I will get it sorted properly, i think and hope. The best discovery i have made is that moving stuff out into the shed is like a halfway house....most all of that stuff will be leaving next time i declutter the shed.
I love the simple concise organized and calm fashion you shared the "secret" to decluttering. Excellent video and I can see it happening in my space. Thank you.
Welcome aboard my friend! Happy to have you as a subscriber and I’m looking forward to growing on this journey with you. Please reach out if you have questions!
As I deal with possessions left behind after three immediate family members left the planet, the mental clutter has been a truly significant barrier that is often overlooked. I really appreciate your calm voice and your clarity regarding physical AND mental clutter. I plan to journal more to help with both of these.....just not going to buy more notebooks :)
With my physical possessions, this is something that doesn't happen as often as it used to. If anything, however, I feel as if my thoughts and emotions continue to provide its own struggles. Sometimes, I run into this issue of telling myself certain things that only delay the problem, but nothing's getting done. Thanks for this insightful video, Ron!
You go boy! That was well said. I really enjoyed your video!! Yes indeed. Declutter helps with my clarity and puts me in a positive mood. Thanks a lot🎉🎉🎉
Thank you for such a thought-provoking video! Helpful and with techniques I can use, I’ll be listening to this again while I declutter today, and hope I can finally let go of some items that I have been shifting around for years!
My mom does this. Yet she’s the most organized clean hoarder I’ve ever met in my life. Because she does this I learned to do this but it’s been a year since I realized IM NOT ORGANIZED 😂 I’m a visual organizer, which means I CANNOT have even 1/10 of what she has. Out of sight out of mind. So I got rid of stuff in my kitchen I don’t use. Teas, spices, foods, utensils, pots, pans ect….then when I had much much less I started to organize in a way I could manage…it’s been 6 months and I’ve YET to have a mess. 🤯 Finally moving into my room to declutter. For the first time I got rid of 2 containers I’ve had since 2013. I’m not anywhere near of clutter free but it’s going down every single week, even if it’s just a few items every 4 days.
Ok, your video was recommended to me by Google. I started watching, and honestly, you won my heart with your smile talking about your mom, then you gained a fan with your content
Love your message, and your energy. Not really looking to be a minimalist, just want to streamline things a bit, including my messy mind lol. Mad props to your mother, she must be amazing. ❤
Wow! So much said in such a small amount of time. Thank you for sharing your expertise. I have subscribed & will be watching more of your videos… Amazing!
Thank you, Ronald for your amazing videos! You are so caring and sensitive to others. I remember during the pandemic Lysol spray was impossible to find and when I did find it, it was $6.75 a can so I purchased 4 thinking I would again not readily find it again. Well, 3 years later, those unused Lysol cans are still sitting in my linen closet since I never really used Lysol spray before the pandemic. I struggle with parting with things that are unused that I spent a lot on ($6.75 x4) is a lot for me on a single income. Also, I struggle with holding on to things they don't make anymore in case I need them. I have a 24 year old car that runs perfectly and all I can afford but find even the basic parts impossible to find. Or, I got rid of so many clothes only to find new clothes now that state "made of cotton" feel like plastic polyester so gone are the good quality cotton fabrics. I need to get better. Thank you again for another incredible video
Are you making this clutter shifting mistake? If so, have you been shifting your physical clutter, mental clutter, or both?
Both, unfortunately.
Mental clutter? Ow, one thing at a time, please! I still have my digital clutter looming in my future!
Both. 😔
Yep. Downsized twice and still shifting. Thanks for this.
All of the above. This video hit the 🎯, as I have been thinking myself as an organized person, but I'm a hamster on a wheel buying stackable storage and moving things around. Our house is super clean, but I might be a hoarder.

I think decluttering is synonymous with therapy. 🥰

Same here!
I bet your parents are amazing people, Ronald. You are such a well spoken, empathetic, supportive, and caring individual. Thank you for being who you are.

Omg. You are speaking to me! Every single words resonates with me. Thank you for this!
Me too!
YES 👏 ! I am only a minute and a half in and you have given us the simple truth!
I'm a new subscriber and your content has sensational value in personal development. Simply, Thank you!
Welcome aboard my friend! Glad to have you here and if you ever have questions don’t hesitate to reach out!
The point is I did it😊 12 x 20 building, 8 skids in garage stacked high & years of collective items all gone😊❤
The shifting of clutter is the hardest of all for I can contest to that!
Good for you way to go.
Thank you for the quality captions
Hi just a quick note to say while I never meet her; I am sure your Mother was a wonderful woman. I base that on the remarkable job she did raising you young man. You are an exceptional human being ❤
Absolutely LOVED Tetris! I wonder how many remember that game. It is so relevant in so many of life's tasks.
Finally! It took goo@le long enough to read my mind & find you for me.🤭 i shifted most things to boxes, unfortunately traumatic tragedys just seem to never end. I'm stuck. I woke up this morning, so that's a start.
I've heard clutter shifting in a hoarding context referred to as 'churning'.
Clutter shifting. Great term!
it was nice today and the Goodwill had drive thru drop off.....i pulled up and unloaded!
Much love!
Holy moly, I needed this. Your kind yet direct voice ignited in me a call to action. Definitely signed up for your newsletter!! Thank you!!
Welcome! I know you’ll love the Clarity Club. Thanks for subscribing and if you have any questions please feel free to reach out.
WOW I had no idea I am a clutter shifter. Everything you said in this video it what a do and how I feel. THANK YOU for getting me started to think differently and start to get rid of things I don't need.
Glad it was helpful my friend! You’re very welcome and I’m rooting for you.
as a therapist, I really like your style and approach. I will share your videos with my clients:)
Great approach! Thanks so much, starting the process here
You’re so calming I feel like your personally in my home helping me with my own clutter
Good heavens!! I'm doing that right now. Didn't even realize it😅.
Wow! I needed this. Shift of things and thoughts. Boom!!
Brilliant! Thanks for putting a light on in my thinking. God Bless.
wow! this hit home, that is so me! Thank you for pointing it out..
Oh, I SO needed to hear this, today!
I'm super good at folding and organizing. Just need to shed all this stuff. Telling my life story here.
You got it my friend. I’m here to help if you have questions!
@@RonaldLBanks Emailed you a while back about a consult
Send me a follow up email my friend if you still need help and want to chat.
I’m rooting for both of you and I’d love to hear about how it goes once you start making significant progress. Please reach out and keep me updated!
Great video, dude. I love that even your speech feels uncluttered!
This intro was the sweetest thing ever!
Thank you!!
I have to get better, and not shifting it from place to place.
I was immediately captivated by your intro about Tetris ❤
My mom was a great Tetris player and had excellent organization which I'm trying to learn also, but it doesn't come naturally at the moment.
Your tips will help us a lot, great content and now subscribed!
Appreciated this guidance. Direct and practical. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your wisdom, Ronald!
You exude such a calming, reassuring presence. I wish I could bring you along my decluttering journey to keep me going when I get overwhelmed
You totally hit the nail on the head!
I love a man that's great at stuff like this.
Thank you so much for this I love it❤
You're so welcome my friend!
Thanks, I hadn't thought of mental clutter in that way. And you have a very nice smile 😃
I love the simple concise organized and calm fashion you shared the "secret" to decluttering. Excellent video and I can see it happening in my space. Thank you.
You sir are making my life better!!! ❤ new and very appreciative member 🥰
Welcome aboard my friend! Happy to have you as a subscriber and I’m looking forward to growing on this journey with you. Please reach out if you have questions!
I’m definitely a clutter shifter😮
Thanks for the encouragement. I will try this.
You are so welcome! Let me know how it goes!
This was helpful, thank you.
Thank you Ronald, for putting a name on my chaos: presented this way i can sort things out. Thanks!!!!
You’re very welcome my friend. I’m happy I was able to bring you clarity in this area. Keep growing on your journey.
@@RonaldLBanks it honestly did, and in all honest senses. Thank you trully
Finally moving into my room to declutter. For the first time I got rid of 2 containers I’ve had since 2013. I’m not anywhere near of clutter free but it’s going down every single week, even if it’s just a few items every 4 days.
Thank you for this. So timely, so well executed ❤️
You’re advise is spot on! I’ve been so inspired by your videos. Thanks
New subbie - Never heard this term, but definitely guilty of it 😩 Great video!
I’m happy this resonated with you my friend! Welcome to the community also. Glad to have you onboard!
I totally do this I need to do BETTER! I needed this video.
Thanks SO much!
Wow! Lots of excellent simple steps towards simplicity and space without being overwhelming. 😀
Very insightful and valuable. Hidden habits....... Really appreciate.
You’re very welcome my friend!
What a pleasant host!
Ok, your video was recommended to me by Google. I started watching, and honestly, you won my heart with your smile talking about your mom, then you gained a fan with your content
This was so good!
very articulate! I am going to begin today''' Thank You!!
Love your message, and your energy. Not really looking to be a minimalist, just want to streamline things a bit, including my messy mind lol. Mad props to your mother, she must be amazing. ❤
A great reminder not to delay making a decision about an item when decluttering. Don’t postpone it to another day. Thank you 🙏🏻 ✌️
Always enlighten x
Thank you for sharing
My pleasure! I’m glad you enjoyed this my friend!
Wow! So much said in such a small amount of time. Thank you for sharing your expertise. I have subscribed & will be watching more of your videos… Amazing!
Thank you for this video. It's very helpful. :)
You’re very welcome!
