- Emergency service for the deli, fresh meat, dairy and beer cases were all running warm on the refrigeration rack at the grocery store. I need to find out why they are warm and get them back to temperature as quickly as possible. This was a big job that took all day. The recorded video was 2.5 hours long originally, this is just a 28 minute breakdown of what it took to repair the rack.

Going all-in. First finding a very difficult leak, then fighting against leak after leak, after leak... Disassembling not pleasing blocks of old coils. Till the end of the day. Man, this is one of the BEST videos figthing leaks I've seen so far. Congrats Rick, GOOD JOB 👏My respects.

Thirty years ago there was a full time refrigeration mechanic working for the supermarket. Then it was cheaper to lay them off and fix on fail . Now it’s don’t replace the unit -we spent the set aside money.
Damn this was a remarkable job.

All I can say is to watch the TH-cam videos. You want the ones like this one, and HVACR Videos (Chris), because they'll leave in the mistakes as well as the 'This is how it's done".
time for a new sensor on ole ticky. bad/contaminated sensor/bad wiring = bad sensing. all the newer stuff is far worse, mush of them you bump the head slightly and the detection sensitivity can change by 90+% and be miles off. we're back to needing proper testing and maintenance of test equipment, everyone takes it for granted now.
I'm waiting on my test vial for the stratus, I used the calibration gas on the H10, that sensor has less than a few hours of use on it and it's never been hit with a hard hit of gas.

Got to love the Stratus. My old H 10 that I was so proud of her for the last 40+ years is feeling abandonment issues and neglect.. she was left for a younger thinner sexier model.

Anybody remember what a halide torch is that's what we used to find leaks in grocery stores back a long long long time ago before the H 10 and other electronic detectors and cordless tools. Installed and serviced all the major grocery store chains. Loved getting them after hours emergency service calls on new store's that other companies installed and started ending up chasing moisture in system and dirty T XV inlet screen s,leaks and oil pressure switch tripping due to the quality of work or knowledge of how the rack systems worked. Loved doing air-conditioning and refrigeration for 40 years and seeing all the different types of systems and technology and I enjoy the videos and appreciate and respect you for the dedication and knowledge that is needed to do commercial refrigeration and you have to be on call and go whenever they call most have a 2 hour response time and technician on call always had a backup tech for the busy times in extreme temperatures and the backup tech even had a backup tech you have to be able and willing to work long hours and always be ready to go
As a hvacr tech in Sweden, the closest to the unit you worked at, we had the kryotherm, it was a complete unit with several independent circuits, heat reclaim/ventilation, whole unit was placed indoors.
This multiple circuit with common suction and liquid distributor you worked at can partly be compared to the modern co2 system, but there's a modern computerized management, two suction lines (one low and one med. temp) and one liquid line going all over the store to the cold storages and display counters.
Anyway. That was a well done repair! 👍
It's always awesome to hear from my overseas viewers🙌. This was one of the oldest control systems this grocery has have left, it's getting replaced hopefully this year with a new Emerson controller.

That is a very old store and even older building so I'm not surprised they had refrigeration issues especially since they only like to do the very minimum repairs. I also wouldn't be surprised if some of that equipment has been there longer than the store has.
Yeah when they get new stuff it's usually something old from another store 🤣

Fixed up a few of those older ones but have replaced many newer case coils. The new stuff is so thin it just can't hold up. Sad really. The new coils in the deli cases can barely make it 5 years. Nice work and enjoy your videos.

10:17 judging by the noise coming from that door which is very obvious they dont have it maintained and considering lubricating a door is simple and relatively inexpensive comparied to refrigeration work. This place probably dosnt do routine maint but only calls when the SHTF.

That H10 will run circles around that other leak detector. Try changing your sensor on the H10
I changed the sensor every year and never pegged it with strong hits. It’s just not as fast and the battery doesn’t lasts as long as my stratus. Sure it’s better at R22 by a little bit but that’s not worth it

I don’t think the blue monster bubbles freeze near as easily as the brand you’re using. The blue monster also doesn’t foam all up when you spray it. Just started using this a couple of months ago, and seems like a superior product.

You can have the supermarket refrigeration repairs. I'll stick to refrigeration repairs at Wendys. Way easier, but still stressful at times. 😂
😂😂 Wendy's is horrible, it's right there with Arby's. Both have greasy, nasty equipment, more so than most. Not too mention they are working over top of you dropping stuff 😂
@HVACRSurvival Yes, Wendys is very very greasy!! I do hot and cold equipment and that grease destroys everything! I refuse to work on some stuff because it's full of grease and a potential fire hazard. The employees working on top on you is so true too, because the kitchens are so small. That's why I hate doing inside work during lunch hours, like hot equipment or reach in coolers because they be in the way, especially the bigger people. 😂

Over the years I always had some oil on the flares to make the surfaces to grip better.
Seems like the stress on them was avoided and the tension got better.
As a young guy, I made many flares on brake tubes that alway was made as double.
The flare thickness was more solid and better working than on refrigeration systems.
I used the nylog on the flare, that's the same as refrigeration oil. I'll be replacing the flare the next time I run into this.

Dang I might have to get a Stratus. I do have the Accutrak however, and I try to use it frequently to no avail. It definitely works, but with small residential leaks in evap coils I have a really hard time hearing leaks. I tend to only find larger leaks with it, which is still very useful. EDIT: Dude, you must be one of the few techs out there that will actually repair stuff like this on that scale. Most companies won't even allow you the time to do that and will just tell them to quote a new coil or what have you. Being that diligent and thorough is kind of a curse, because you get all the shitty jobs. Keep your head up, you make a big impact.

Nice work and endurance, Rick. When you mentioned you were having trouble on a low-temp circuit on another rack, my first thought was maybe it had mechanical sub-cooling that was being fed from the rack you had the leak on. Just a thought. Keep up the good work vids....👏

Good find and great repair! You definitely do a thorough job! I got turned on to the Nu Calgon fluorescent leak detector because it’s freezing point is 2°, Big Blue is 27°, I work in a lot of freezers so I definitely like the lower freezing point lol. Also, I really like how you use different tips for different applications, I need to get the one you used to braze the distributor tubes and elbows, nice work!

Great work Rick,those new teflon washers work great,they're coming out on the new units,love that leak detector whats the brand of the soap bubbles LOL.
Big Blu by Refrigeration Technologies. They also make a subzero version which is useful for freezers and it won't turn to slush in your van in the winter.
the refrigerant levels sensors are likely contaminated and very wrong reading/skewed miles off. or controller even reading wrong. probably best to make sure nothing is in defrost and everything on that system "warm boxes", then fill it by sight glass/receiver level and pray. 🤣

Man I got into the trade 2 years ago, work in light refrigeration the biggest systems we install and service are those RDT systems. This is like a whole other trade lol. How do you even get into racks like this?
I'm learning as I go, asking questions, researching other TH-camrs that do it everyday and looking at my book refrigeration for AC technicians. I've been doing this since 1995 helps

It used to trip me out to step outside and warm my detector up, to walk through the slider and it go ape shit 🤣
With drive time I think I had 3.5hr on the first and 10 on the other day. I was about to go ballistic when the detector went off after the repair. 😡😩

It became policy (when I worked markets) to perform a walk through leak check of every market after every service, took about an hour to walk through every time. Pain in the ass at times… I mean, we got lots of work out of that policy, but man… I wasn’t always looking for a reason to stay, if you know what I mean 😵💫
