But its history is still pretty brutal. The reason why it seems so peaceful is because the Chinese really preserved and prioritized their scholarly, artistic culture.

You should watch the older Taiwanese, "Legend of White Snake", the one with the great music, there is lots of Buddhist themes there, the entire plot is about a white snake who on the advice of a Bodhisattva went to seek out the reincarnation of a boy who saved her life in a previous lifetime!! :)
