This is why I tried to find the leader of these battles as fast as possible. The laser eye battle, for example, can be beaten without having to cross the laser bridge if you fly your birdmen over and kill the Silver Knight on the stairs.
I would grind out the whole laser eye level and beat everything for the XP. Took forever! I have played through the games multiple times though because I love it so much.
As far I know, one of the lead developers of Shining Force mentioned that Fire Emblem has horrible pacing. Well, he's right, but most fire emblem games don't have THIS level of slow terrain. I mean Jesus Christ, trekking through mountains surrounded by forests! FE games have slow chapters too, but it's usually 2-3 chapters per game at most, and even then it's not this bad.
Forklauncher that is one of the reasons i prefer advance wars...all is fair and normal...(only on the first and second game...and i have to admit it gets DULL AS @#$& in most stages)
To be fair this is probably the longest level. Later on there will be larger forests to go through but you'll at least have winged warriors and zylo to get through things fast.
I guess in a way, this is an early lesson in differences in terrain types and their effect on movement. A tedious lesson that they could easily have shortened somewhat, but a lesson nonetheless.
Actually, if Max reach the castle you can end the battle early. But yes, it takes a while getting there. X D But then again, that the whole thing take forever is actually the point storywise. Those Runefaust soldiers are there to prevent outsider to interfere while their leader is doing stuff in the castle. When you FINALLY arrive, it's too late to do anything. Also, you didn't mention Gong could be recruited. It helps making that part easier. :P
@@Gamesmarts194 actually you can recruit gong before winning the first battle. All you have to do is leave the battle, go to the house next to the location of the battle, and talk to him.
Joseph Lunders exactly. when i reach the first fight i egress immediately, walk back to the cabin and recruit Gong so you have two healers, and so he levels up with everyone else
As much as I like the classic Shining Force 1, it's true that some stages are not as fun as others, mostly because it takes a while to reach the enemies, and as you point out, with all those terrains it takes even more. Although that's not a problem of this game only, saddly no S-RPG is safe from that flaw in some way or another. Another thing I didn't like as much is the stat growth system, just like FE, you can have very bad luck; unfortunatelly that's one of the most usual things in this genre, even when it only serves to make a good chunk of the characters on this games not very useful/ just a fucking joke. At least in my eyes, of course. In Shining Force 1 is more about the level up system being a dick with the player and not that much about each character, but in case of FE it's more about the developers making the characters bad at their own will. Why the developers create so many characters just to fuck them in the stat/gameplay department? I always thought it was a total waste of time for both, the developers and the players. If you're going to make characters, don't waste your time doing them bad and don't add them to the game just to fill spaces. Wouldn't it be great if you had a lot of good choices to create your own team instead of choosing "the ones that doesn't suck"? Anyway... I find Shining Force 2 being much better and enjoyable in general (Stat Growth fixed for the most part too), although I still love the cast of characters from the first one, it is quite varied and bizarre, with things like a Squid Wizard, a flying Don Quijote, that Knight-Tank Armadillo guy, Jay Leno as a centaur,... And the best thing in the universe, JOGURT! i'm sure you'll agree! While far from perfect I still like the game, and I even would choose SF1 over some of the Fire Emblem titles. And sorry for the rant, lol.
This is one of the biggest reasons I like SFII better. More awesome attack animations and the ability to summon Apollo and ORAORAORAORA enemies with him may have something to do with it, too. That reminds me. Git, what's your opinion on the infamous Chessboard Battle?
I'm playing the GBA version now. They added OPTIONAL TURN LIMITS to all these damn maps without changing the size of the maps. So if you want the cool rewards you have to blitz through the map, meaning your low movement units (including healers) get left in the dust. Kinda reminds me of FE4. On the bright side, you get a shaman who can boost movement for the battle in then GBA version, which really helps.
5:57 also: a first time player wouldn't have known that some characters can be recruited. however some of them have requirements that are less obvious then others, you basically passed right over gong the monk, which you just talk to him to recruit him, in that chateau you resurrected your characters at unless you didn't for the sake of the episode

Those first Shining Force battles are rough. If you think about it, this was a way for them to introduce things like Boss units (Rune Knight), Land Effect and unit types' movement preferences (Horses can't move through mountains easily). It's painful but it implicitly teaches you all this. Your comments even show how you're aiming to have enemies on grass and not mountain so the lessons taught there are working... it's just rough. I hate that second battle so much.
God I wanna rage so hard for "Giving Shining Force to much hate" even though it's just an opinion and It's true the 2nd fight does suck. I still love SF1 and SF2 is my favorite game of all time.
I thankfully watched this before playing through shining force on the Genesis Classic, thanks for mentioning that hidden spell. This was, believe it or not, my first strategy RPG with a level-up system, and I played it first a few months ago. I don't know why I waited this long.
When I saw Shining Force I thought it was going to be the BS Circus Tent fight that happens pretty early in the game and is really damn brutal, but I agree that the first game had way too many levels where the terrain grinds the pace to a screeching halt... and this is a turn based strategy game! These games are not known for their blindingly fast gameplay!
That boss in the circus hit like a truck. X D That being said, it's not so bad if you remember that equipment can also be used as item. One of the ring can boost attack which helps taking down the boss fast.
Shining Force was actually one of the first SRPGs that I played, and I thought it was really neat. HOWEVER, I distinctively remember many more battles that you didn't list that were terribly long and dull, and I couldn't even complete the game because almost every battle took entirely too long.
Well....at least the remake has the option of allowing you to succed the mission upon reaching the home town. Other than that, WHO THOUGHT THAT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA?! I simpithize with you on this.
I've done the GBA version and it seems they lowered Map size. But even with those problem this game is one of my all time favorite. On gba i loved replaying with different characters. One of my favourite was arthur. terrible stat at the beginning (like donnel in FE awakening), but begin to learn magic and got decend Level up stat rating.
I like Shining Force over Fire Emblem for one simple reason: it makes deaths non-permanent and compensates by making the enemies themselves much stronger than your units. Most players will try to keep their entire army intact throughout the duration of the game, but in Fire Emblem, one bad roll of the RNG will force you to rage-quit and start a chapter over. In Shining Force, I know that I will be losing characters in a battle more often than not, but with enemies that are stronger, the challenge is allocating characters as a resource.
So this game is basically a lot like FE: Geneology of the Holy War in several ways. Geneology is just painful and so slow, many very good ideas, but awful execution.
AdamEEntertainment Actually, I thought Geneology of the Holy War executed it a lot better. At least majority of your starting characters were mounted, so it didn't take that long to reach your enemies.
FireIcarus Yeah, I wished most of the maps were cut in half and the number of chapters were doubled, because each chapter felt like 2 or 3. It was like you seize a castle and somewhere else on the map a new castle becomes hostile, you seize that one and another castle becomes hostile halfway across the map. God forbid you lose a character late in a chapter and want to restart.
i'm pretty sure it must be a mod of some sort, though. look at the damage output of Lyn, she's only doing a single point of damage to the boss, which is just going to be healed up on the enemy turn! not even Hard Mode is that cruel, the enemy values are mostly unchanged in Lyn's story from what i know.
HA! You almost had me with that Fire Emblem trick you did there! (the 'f**k it' bit.) Thankfully, the internet is a very useful tool in these situations ;) Hard to trick people while we have access to it! I must say though, how annoying (or amusing) must it be to go through the whole game, while constantly being called 'f**k it'. :P
For the Shining Force 1 game, if you exit the first battle before beating it, you can travel to the right to find a cabin with an guy chopping wood. Talk to him and he'll join your team, which is the only time you can get him.
Gah, watching this video reminds me of why every time I have tried to pick up Shining Force, I just quit. I have never seen beyond the second battle because of the reasons you mentioned. At least in FE they are small maps with 3-5 enemies total in the beginning boring tutorial stuff.
Eventually it gets better and you get a shitload of other characters and some of the battles are actually intense, the worst battle in my opinion is when you have to fight a boss with like 90 hit points and infinite magic and she constantly used heal. Worst part is you also just faced a, and I mean this very literally, hellish onslaught of the toughest normal enemies in the game.
I saw Shining Force in the thumbnail, and I had to wonder which level you were referring to. It has been years since I last played this one, and yes, the pacing of that level is TERRIBLE. But the game gets so much better as it goes on. The whole chapter in Shade Abbey remains my favorite in any SRPG.
Well it was called "The legacy of the gods" in the Japanese version. They changed that for the U.S. version. "Sego does what Nintendon't"? Yeah, right. :P
I played the GBA version of Shining Force. It was a little more bearable since the map looks a little smaller. Also, you should have mentioned that you can get Gong at the small house outside the first battle. That might makes things easier.
Oh, and as a person who played that remake! The long and boring battle is not an oversight, mistake, or mess-up. It's even in the remake, and it's just as boring as ever.
Speaking of first impressions, I keep hearing about people who quit Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne because of Matador, Though I haven't seen any person complaining about him myself but I can see why. Early game boss(Like the 3rd or 4th) You don't get Dekunda(The skill the removes buffs from the enemy) yet Matador uses Red Capote(Maximum Hit/Evasion, Equal to using the Hit/Evasion buff 4 times) as an opener Even if you decrease his Hit/Evasion by the debuff, You need to do it 4 Times to neutralize it The battle system punishes you for missing, If you attack and miss, You lose 2 Mini-turns(Each turn you get mini-turns equal to the party members number) without doing damage He can use Red Capote anytime he wants in the battle even if you make his Hit/Evasion normal
I'm at Chapter 5 and I've just about figured out how to determine what a stage will be like based on the music: Map 1 (example: the battle featured in this video): Relentlessly boring Battle 1: Always a castle level, cool layout Battle 2: Standard battle, usually forgettable (except the Laser Eye battle) Battle 3 (example: Marionette battle): Either hilariously easy or hair-pullingly frustrating, there is no in-between
I admit it, when I first played Shining Force on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, either the game was hard for me, or I didn't know where to go, or the very first battle was a bit of a bore. I NEED to get back to this game. Maybe, though.
I saw this one was shining force and knew exactly which level it would be. Agreed 100% here, this level never put me off the game, but its too slow too early in the game. Never a good combination.
10:10 Hey they are making me tired to! If there wern't lots of fighting the forest should a become the quiet forest. And you included a sleeping Kirby despite the fact you have yet to play battle royale for the 3DS
...Watching the video (AGAIN), I'm really depressed to see what kind of game Shining Force REALLY is. Git, what do you think of Shining Force? Is Shining Force II better?
+TheRoyalGamer Better gameplay wise, yes. Graphically? Some of the characters just seem weird or like they got wood stain in their facial creases. And the priest still blinks in reverse. What is up with that?
Come to think of it; I don't even remember you sharing your opinion on FE:A with us, Whois. I actually really like it, and the 3D effect is done really well. Support marriage can be kinda creepy but it's a nice mechanic. What's your impression?
It's a really fun and detailed game, but it has some serious balance issues. (The Avatar outclasses just about everyone, though he/she is a lot of fun to use)
Was considering getting Shining Force on Steam because it's only a dollar and it's a genre I like despite being terrible at it. Still considering getting it, but thanks for the warning.
I know I'm late, but I have something to add. The GBA version is worse, since you have to complete it in 12 turns or less, so you have to trudge through at a fast pace, which is very painful.
I'll never have problems with SF series, even in that second battle or on the other giant maps. But i agree, they are SO GIANT! To avoid that two final enemies, put two characters that attack from distance behind the river (like Hans and Tao) and attack from there.
D.V.: My brother used to play this game all the time because it was one of his favorite games but I do see where you are coming from where it would detour people from wanting to continue because it is so slow....
One of the worst levels that happens early was in Enter the matrix, after the epic fighting and snipping if the airport you need to chase Axel who is in a plan "oh this sounds fun, I'm gonna be epic and do stunts in the car and it's gonna be fun!", Oh how wrong was I, here you can go to slow as your chasing it but you can't be fast as there's bumps and sharp turns and then you had to avoid anything in your way, including pillars and metal boxes, finally if the torment couldn't get worse you get hunted down by the police theeeen you chase a agent! This happens on a early part and to top it off it's with a character that should not be able the mission is called aqueduct and the game is for Ps2 but after that horrible part it gets alot better. Fun fact the game is made made completely out of motion control for the movements of the characters! Lub Lub gets what Lub Lub wants
Surely the reward in strategy games is the challenge of going up against foes with not much to work with and finding a path to victory? If having oodles of power so that you hardly lose is better then shouldn't we be admitting to just enjoying the ride instead?
I know a level from the same series that should be given a 'Worst Levels' title, and it's from the same series, The Sword of Hayja. It's the level after your entire army is split into two. You're navigating one half of the army up a bridge filled area to get to a town. It's not that bad.... If there weren't any Sorcerers. Mage units are extremely OP in the NA version of this game, as they can 1 shot multiple units with a single attack! It's an utter pain treking through that battle. I may have butchered the description of the area since I've only played and beaten the game once and don't intend on playing through it again. Especially not after being spoiled by Fire Emblem.
The gba remake of this particular shining game fixes many of the issues of the original. Its like the shining force equivalent of the love FE got on gba.
As much as I like this game (although I'm stuck on that second tedious battle), There is an old saying...The Road to Hell is paved with Good Intentions...Considering the title points out it it the "Legacy of Great Intention"...
Agreed, Shining Force is a lot more beginner-friendly than Fire Emblem. It lets you level grind, there's no weapon durability, and there's no permadeath. Though the lack of permadeath has the downside of taking away the gut punch of seeing a beloved character die because of your incompetence, and encourages more reckless, aggressive tactics.
Hey, whats your thoughts on Final Fantasy tactics advanced. I'm not really into Strategy role playing games, (I find them incredibly boring Or cheap. fire emblem and Ps1 ff tactics prime examples) But i love Tactic's advanced. Its so fun. Whats your thoughts on the game ? : 3
whoisthisgit I didnt know that. O-owell tacticts ps1 and advanced are diffrent stories so you dont need to play one to get the other. although the ps1 tactics is super brutal. Might be up your ally. I recamend importing both games. :3
whoisthisgit as Nintendofan said, The story of Tactics Advanced stands on its own (much like most "main series" Final Fantasy games), so don't let the lack of having played the PSX original stop you from enjoying it. I certainly didn't. =P
Also, this game is considered a classic though right? Good reviews all round. Maybe I guess because it was so novel at the time? Love the music though.
I loved Shining Force as a kid and still do to this day, but I have to agree that battle 2 of ShF1 is completely awful. Also, it hurt a little watching you skip out on grabbing Gong next to the friar's hut there.
Have you ever considered doing XCOM or Disgaea for one of your videos? Both are SRPG's (the latter more than the former, though), both have bad endings in their games and both have awesome/boring levels.
Those levels just look like hell to have to sit through with all those terrain cutting fields. This is one of the reasons why I'm reluctant to get into SRPGs, because the fun depends heavily on good game (and level) design. Missions shouldn't feel like a sluggish grind fest or a chore to play through like you want to get it over with as soon as possible. What I've seen in this video looks like a terrible mix of both. Also "I'm sorry, fuck it" -- best line ever. Would have been my reaction to this game if I were playing that awful looking second level.
Not all SRPGs are that slow, though. It's just that Shining Force put something you should be seeing mid/late-game during early-game. Most Fire Emblem games might have a slow start, but some chapters later you will already notice a speed up on the pace. Except for FE7 (or just Fire Emblem in the west) and Lyn's Tale, as Lyn herself said, "Fuck it". Fuck that overly long tutorial. I was glad when I actually started the game on Eliwood's Tale. It's so much more fun.
SF1's battles are very slow compared to SF2, biggest issue is the insane forest and mountains you have to traverese through to the point you have to use flyers and beastmen who just yeet through all terrain like its nothing. I feel the reason these battles are ment to take so long especially with traversal is that it's ment to make it look like some of these battles happened over a few hours. Didn't get to complete these games properly till 2018 and I agree with you on SF1 tho I still love the game with it's flaws n all but SF2 improves heavily on everything.

It's the player Name
*****
It took me a few seconds to realise that. For some stupid reason I thought it was a mod.
i'm pretty sure it must be a mod of some sort, though. look at the damage output of Lyn, she's only doing a single point of damage to the boss, which is just going to be healed up on the enemy turn! not even Hard Mode is that cruel, the enemy values are mostly unchanged in Lyn's story from what i know.
Viscra Maelstrom t
Incorrect. He named his player character "fuck it".
The music makes me think of soliders slowly crawling through a muddy river well its raining
HA! You almost had me with that Fire Emblem trick you did there! (the 'f**k it' bit.)
Thankfully, the internet is a very useful tool in these situations ;)
Hard to trick people while we have access to it!
Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intentions
wut???
Well it was called "The legacy of the gods" in the Japanese version.
They changed that for the U.S. version.
"Sego does what Nintendon't"? Yeah, right. :P
"Seeego!"
It's true what they say about the road to hell in this particular case...
Mewseeker "Nintendo does what Segon't."
...Wait, WTF?
Nintendo is doing what Sega Genesisn't?
"I'm sorry, fuck it."
lel
This game seems kinda boring by everything.
Huge stages
Walking forever
I once made a custom Advance Wars 2 level which involved a U-shaped pattern. It took me 10 turns just to get to the center of the map. *sigh*
I played the GBA version of Shining Force. It was a little more bearable since the map looks a little smaller. Also, you should have mentioned that you can get Gong at the small house outside the first battle. That might makes things easier.
I really couldn't think I'd run into this list, and find a worse game than the Taz Mania one, but looks like I did.
Early game boss(Like the 3rd or 4th)
You don't get Dekunda(The skill the removes buffs from the enemy) yet
Matador uses Red Capote(Maximum Hit/Evasion, Equal to using the Hit/Evasion buff 4 times) as an opener
Even if you decrease his Hit/Evasion by the debuff, You need to do it 4 Times to neutralize it
The battle system punishes you for missing, If you attack and miss, You lose 2 Mini-turns(Each turn you get mini-turns equal to the party members number) without doing damage
He can use Red Capote anytime he wants in the battle even if you make his Hit/Evasion normal
RIP pizza 1827-20X6
It's probably best to just train your characters on the first map. No long walks to get to the enemy.
I'm at Chapter 5 and I've just about figured out how to determine what a stage will be like based on the music:
Map 1 (example: the battle featured in this video): Relentlessly boring
Battle 1: Always a castle level, cool layout
Battle 2: Standard battle, usually forgettable (except the Laser Eye battle)
Battle 3 (example: Marionette battle): Either hilariously easy or hair-pullingly frustrating, there is no in-between
I admit it, when I first played Shining Force on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, either the game was hard for me, or I didn't know where to go, or the very first battle was a bit of a bore. I NEED to get back to this game. Maybe, though.
I saw this one was shining force and knew exactly which level it would be. Agreed 100% here, this level never put me off the game, but its too slow too early in the game. Never a good combination.
Ahh, the Armads crit never gets old
10:10 Hey they are making me tired to! If there wern't lots of fighting the forest should a become the quiet forest. And you included a sleeping Kirby despite the fact you have yet to play battle royale for the 3DS
"I'm sorry, fuck it" Nice one hahahahahhaa
...Watching the video (AGAIN), I'm really depressed to see what kind of game Shining Force REALLY is. Git, what do you think of Shining Force? Is Shining Force II better?
Shining Force II is definitely better, because for one thing, it doesn't have these dull types of levels.
+TheRoyalGamer
Better gameplay wise, yes.
Hey, John Doe, didya know there's a remake on GBA? It's called "Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon"
To quote a favored line from Ed Edd n Eddy, Snoresville!
I'll never have problems with SF series, even in that second battle or on the other giant maps. But i agree, they are SO GIANT!
To avoid that two final enemies, put two characters that attack from distance behind the river (like Hans and Tao) and attack from there.
Also, Ken has a spear, so he can attack the rune knights safely (good if Tao's out of MP).
Now that I think about it, I don't think I ever got past Battle 2. Ironically, it wasn't from boredom but from being just plain bad at the game, lol
"I´m sorry, fuck it...." Lyn 2014.
D.V.: My brother used to play this game all the time because it was one of his favorite games but I do see where you are coming from where it would detour people from wanting to continue because it is so slow....
The music sounds like your trudging through mud that is up to your ankels
Wait till you see Ozma on FF9, the battle is based on luck so even the strongest parties can struggle.
Took me a full 30 seconds to realize "fuck it" was your name and not the actual dialogue.
"I'm sorry... Fuck it..." WHAT?!
Moment I saw that you put my first rpg ever on here, I had to watch it...& agree with you lol
Fire Emblem: FUCKING SHIT! YOU LITTLE BA- Oops...I mean Dastard.
Why have I never played this game it looks fantastic
The GBA version is the first that i tried and it wasnt like that lol.
Yeah, thats because the gba port is the much better version.

Hold on, do my eyes deceive me, or did she just say...
"No... It's not...
I'm sorry, fuck it...
Everyone...forgive me..."!?!?
fuck it is the name of the character.
Nigel Joshua Orbe Oh, Clever.
I played shining force before I played Fire Emblem and it's a good reason it was easy for me to get into the genre
@@psychopianist630 dude agreed.
@@autusticrat dang though the game really gets tough at Chapter 6, Kane was a monster and I had to basically cheese him to stand a chance against him
So... the remake has those tedious battle maps?
I remember this battle. At least you could argue we finally had a video game "war"-esque battlr built to scale.
nintendofan707 Haven't played it. I've always thought I should play the Playstation game first, but it never came out in the UK.
whoisthisgit I didnt know that.
Love the music though.
this is one of those games where the sequel really became better
#DamnPie
I loved Shining Force as a kid and still do to this day, but I have to agree that battle 2 of ShF1 is completely awful. Also, it hurt a little watching you skip out on grabbing Gong next to the friar's hut there.
The legacy of good intentions
Appropriate
Have you ever considered doing XCOM or Disgaea for one of your videos? Both are SRPG's (the latter more than the former, though), both have bad endings in their games and both have awesome/boring levels.
Who thought it was a good idea to have the music reset every time a turn ends?
