      Only a few studio musicians are listed in discographies. (See description) This makes me think that the strings were added later and the players were not identified.

    Every time I listen to this song, it is more obvious to me what a watershed song it was for Brenda's career and while unappreciated by most, deserves to be on many Best Of lists for 1969. Fantastic tune that decisively transitioned her from pre-teen firecracker and teen pop star to successful adult singer. Thanks for sharing this.

    • @lorrainesmith4279
      @lorrainesmith4279 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      an@@akavitsuma It's about a girl who has given her virginity to a man who lied to her and told her that he loved her. The girl finds out that he is known for doing this sort of thing to lots of girls......hence his nickname....'Johnny One Time....' he uses girls just once and then leaves them .

    Brenda's non-hits (e.g., "Talk of the Town"; "Prisoner's Song"), etc. are definite proof of her tremendous range and sensitivity for a song. She is a star high above the firmament. The more of her catalog of recordings I discover the more I become endeared to "Little Miss Dynamite".

    • @MostlyBrenda
      @MostlyBrenda  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Everyone praises her voice, but she is also great interpreter and that, IMHO, is what puts her near the top of the list.

  • @davidrlfield
    @davidrlfield 9 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    Listen and pay attention to Brenda's amazing natural voice that is able to sing long phrases without a breath in the middle, and unlike recent performers that are tweaked on every note..

    • @MostlyBrenda
      @MostlyBrenda  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +davidrlfield She makes it look easy, but her songs are filled with little vocalizations. Only when you try to sing along ,as I do sometimes, do you realize the high degree of difficulty. "How did she manage that?" , I ask myself as I fall several words behind....

    • @davidrlfield
      @davidrlfield 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mostly Brenda because for her it is easy! I think many people try to sing along but cannot match the richness and intensity of her singing voice. You have to be born with it , I guess. ~ I can only name Judy Garland and Adelle with that same ability.

    • @MostlyBrenda
      @MostlyBrenda  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +davidrlfield Judy was Brenda's idol and when they were both in Las Vegas in the sixties, Brenda requested a meeting. She didn't want to just barge in backstage after a performance. They met at the hotel pool. Judy, much to Brenda's surprise, knew her songs! Probably Liza was buying and playing them at home. Judy's advice: "Don't let them take away your childhood." Little did she know that Brenda already had 15 years and thousands of performances under her belt.

    I got this song on brenda Lee's greatest hits. It's the first song on the CD. This women can sing almost anything . Every song on the CD is perfect... l love them all!!!! I will tell you for a petite young lady, brenda was born with country rhythm and soul!!!!! That's why 3 generations from 1959 to the present of my folks bought her records...and on and on she's the best!

    • @MostlyBrenda
      @MostlyBrenda  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've come to appreciate her creativity. When she does an older song, it is transformed into something new. There is technical perfection for sure, but not mentioned much is her amazing interpretive skill. Even "Johnny" comes out differently in our other video of it.

      It wasn't a big hit in 1969, but it is one of those records that is now held in higher regard than 50 years ago. This is a lip-synch, but I love the live version she did on the Johnny Cash show where she actually changes the meaning of the song. See th-cam.com/video/TK-DOR2qfAE/w-d-xo.html

      @@MostlyBrenda - Where this was "big" was the Easy Listening chart, peaking at #3. And she didn't do too shabbily if her nomination for Best Female Vocal Pop Performance at the 1969 Grammys is of indication.

    While this may have been Brenda's last real hit on what is called the pop charts, just for history, "You Don't Need Me Anymore/Bring Me Sunshine" went to #84 in 1969, "I Think I Love You Again"/"Hello Love" at #94 in 1970 and the last was "Nobody Wins" at #70 in 1973. What's important is this gradually fed Brenda over onto the country charts.
    In 1971 "If This Is Our Last Time"/"Everybody's Reaching Out For Someone" was her second country hit at #30, then in 1972 she had two country hits, but "Nobody Wins" in 1973 was her major country hit at #5, along with "Sunday Sunrise" #6. In 1974 she had three top ten country hits. By then she was "country" and charted many hits until 1985,
    including top tens, "He's My Rock", "Tell Me What It's Like", "The Cowgirl and the Dandy", and "Broken Trust". Of course, she had many songs on AC charts, and Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree" charted year after year.

    Actually, a few songs charted after Johnny. "Nobody Wins" which reached #70 on the Hot 100 in 1973 was the last. The perennial "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" still pops up occasionally on the charts. It reached #76on the UK chart in 2008, just 16 months ago.
    Brenda was inducted into the R&R HOF in 2002. She is the only female in both major halls.

    About the same time that this song was recorded Brenda recorded a song called "I Think I Love You Again." If you are a Brenda Lee fan, and you have not heard this recording you are missing something and you are not alone. The song is almost impossible to find. It is not included on any of her hit compilations in any form. In fact, as far as I know it appears on only one "rare album called "Memphis Portrait" and as a 45 rpm. This rare record is amazing.

    I think that the recording companies are missing out on a huge cash cow. Yes, the songs are popular, but what i truly enjoy is "seeing" the artists as they looked back then. The nostalgia and the imagery are potent and I "would" buy it, if it were available for purchase.

    On this day in 1973 {June 22nd} Maxine Weldon performed "Johnny One Time" on the NBC-TV program 'The Midnight Special'...
    Four years earlier on February 2nd, 1969 Brenda Lee entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart with her version of the song; eventually her version peaked at #41 and stay on the chart for 11 weeks...
    And on March 23rd, 1969 it reached #3 {for 1 week} on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart; the two records that prevented it from reaching #1 were; "Galveston" by Glen Campbell {#1} and "You Gave Me a Mountain" by Frankie Laine {#2}...
    'Little Miss Dynamite', born Brenda Mae Tarpley, will celebrate her 71st birthday this coming December 11th {2015}...

      sauquoit13456 Yeah and on 31 Aug 1969, Susan Raye sang it on Hee Haw in prime time on network TV. How 'bout them apples?

      Mostly Brenda Thanks for the reply and the info on Susan Raye, I've always enjoyed her...
      Between 1969 and 1986 she had twenty-nine* hits on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart; seven made the Top 10 with "(I've Got A) Happy Heart"
      being her biggest hit, it peaked at #3 in 1971...
      * Six of her entries on the Hot Country Singles chart were duets with Buck Owens...
      Thanks again...

    In addition to the beautiful voice? This song captures perfectly the emotions a woman must feel the morning after a "one-night stand"...all the "shattered pride" and "broken heart" and promises made that never had any intention of being kept. Not trying to 'brag" on myself -- back some 25 years ago -- but I was one of those "Johnny One Times". I would say anything and do anything, to get "laid", and if I felt any guilt at all, it was only fleeting. It is nothing in the least I am proud of...it was shameful. It took years and developing a bit of wisdom -- having children, especially a daughter -- that I came to see CLEARLY see that I had -- in the whole scheme of things -- MUCH less actual "pride" than "they" did. After all, I was the one who lied, cheated, and stole, to get what I wanted. How much "pride" -- if one has any self-respect at all -- can one glean from THAT....?

    "Johnny One Time - Decca 32428 - The past Willie Nelson country hit ballad penned by Dallas Frazier serves as a strong commercial pop entry for the stylist. This could easly prove a top chart item for her. Flip: 'I Must Have Been Out Of My Mind'.” (Billboard, Dec. 28, 1968, p. 51)

      Funny, though - in a reverse situation, Brenda did an early recording of "Always On My Mind" a decade before Mr. Nelson had his biggest solo hit on the "pops" with it.

    Brenda could balance her family and all the a sundry elements of womanhood with an easy grace.
    Performing schedules and the demands of life in general can tax anyone.
    It just goes to show that a genius can be beautiful as well.

      Yes I agree with you, Brenda has always been my favorite singer of all-time, I love Patsy Cline, I've always felt it a awful shame not only of Patsy's death but to that her and Brenda Lees friendship was cut short in the beginning of Brenda's career. Love you Brenda..

    This was always my favorite song by her. She had a slew of both pop and country hits but this one didn't do too well on either chart. I guess it wasn't enough of either format.

      Yet, it made #3 on the A/C (then known as Easy Listening) chart. More important, it netted Ms. Lee a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (in company with fellow nominees including Dionne Warwick, Dusty Springfield, Vikki Carr, Jackie DeShannon - and the eventual winner, Peggy Lee, who'd win for "Is That All There Is"). It also made the Top 30 of Cash Box and the Top 40 of Record World. To be in the same category with those famous names, you have to be that good. And Brenda, on here, certainly was.
