One thing a lot of people don't realize - when you factory build a brand new garbage truck, there's typically a lot of options for adding items that will assist with work flow. Many manufacturers have options for tool holders (and all kinds of other things). If a truck doesn't come with tool holders, crews will typically jam a broom behind a grab handle on the side of the hopper. IF your fender is long enough, you could go buy a rubber clamps / straps that you can bolt on to hold a broom. As for the gloves, you are probably going to be the cleanest operator out there. Many rear load crews just accept the dirt and bring it in the cab with them (most people don't own their own truck, they just run the wheels off someone else's). Many years ago, when I drove rear load, I drove that truck with my gloves on, because I was in and out of the truck at most stops - it just didn't make sense to take them on and off for over a thousand stops a day. Most drivers and helpers end up putting their gloves either up on the dash or on the floor, in the cab, under the seat right by the door. You would probably be much happier with an outside under-body tool box (if one will fit on the chassis frame rails). This would be a great place to store items you don't want in the cab. Also, I can't remember if you said you all ready had one, but you NEED a spill kit. If you don't, just go buy one. Eventually you'll break a hydraulic line, and it's going to make a mess on the ground, you'll be happy you have a spill kit when it happens. As for stuff falling off, it happens. Most brand new trucks have some kind of bugs during the first year, then you have a few years of decent performance, and eventually the truck gets old and really starts falling apart. Luckily for you, your duty cycle on your truck is really low, so that truck should last quite a while. Keep up the great work! Years ago, I thought I wanted to do exactly what you are doing, but now I'm on the manufacturing/sales side of the solid waste game. It's fun watching you go through the process - learning the whole way!
I love this content because I had a landscaping company for a while, now I am a truck driver in the trash industry. I got a brand new Mack truck at work.. it had plenty of loose bolts as well trust me.

I work for a large truck leasing company and when a customer has a problem with their brand new truck and they are too far away to come back and have us deal with it in our shop, we will send a vendor out to make the repair for us. Wouldn't hurt to contact the dealer and tell them you don't have time to waste a day or two driving back and forth and ask them to have someone more local to you come out and fix it. Either way, its your money, your truck and your decision.
hey brad love the series. just as a suggestion coming from a garbage truck operator I would keep the blade closed and slide up while dumping bins as to not let rubbish fall down and take up more un necesarry space when tipping bins
As someone starting a transportation company, commercial vehicles are a different beast when it comes to warranties. If it’s the engine or other part of the vehicle moving, that’s where I’ll care about warranty. The body? Forget it. I’ll fix whatever to get it back to working. You’ll get used to being your own in-house mechanic. You’ll just need to determine what you are comfortable and capable of doing in-house versus what you need to outsource.
I suggested he source a local farm equipment mechanic, as they'll know the backend better then just a truck&coach mechanic and this is from first hand experience from them messing with the hydraulic controller. 😂
One thing too when you’re heading out to the route, bring the wall back towards the cab. I don’t know how your truck rides but in the trucks that I’ve driven it helps out tremendously.
Back in 2009 my dad bought a brand new Sabre gooseneck camper, our FIRST TRIP in it, we hooked up the water and absolutely flooded the cargo area (under the camper) because one of the water pipe connections, didn’t have a gasket in it. Campers/RVs are just quickly slapped together and are not really gone thru to make sure they’re good to roll. Really loving this series btw!
I know for a fact that some of the assemblers for those rv's are high on drugs and they don't drug test because they have a hard time getting positions filled and time restrictions for the assembly process and very little oversight
Hi Brad, I have a tip when you pick up your container, lower the compacting arm, then dump your container and then let the compting arm close and rise while you take your container away again, this would save you a lot of time instead of waiting until that is completely gone and only then take the container away because the container was not yet on the ground
When you first started a few months back, I was like "what the hell is this guy doing" LOL You've proven me wrong! truck looks good and productivity is up!
Great video Brad, I can see that you are beginning to get more into the groove of operating this truck. My only efficiency tip, is to make sure that PTO switch is turned on before you grab the can at each stop. I noticed that towards the end of the video, you were already figuring out, to pull the trash into the bin, from the previous dump, while you grab the next can, to make room for the next dump, excellent. How about that juice ha? Makes you wanna pull that plug and keep it out lol. I also noticed that some people really overload their cans, they might need a 2nd can. With night photography, you really need a camera with a larger lens, like a Sony FX3 for example, but thats like a 3K+ camera, so likely a no go for trash video's.
Loving these videos Brad. No need to apologize about going into detail about stuff finically or just explaining decisions, I enjoy it. I know it's a few months away, so I'm way ahead on this, but I'm actually excited to see how the holiday trash pickup will go with the truck!
you have to keep the trash sweeped up when you dump a tote instead of leaving it open that will allow the tote to dump all the way fast instead of dumping it on trash
Thanks for the tips! As Chick Magnet mentioned, we are heading into the 5th or 6th week real time using the truck, so any changes I read about now won't be shown on camera for a month or so.
I'm so proud of y'all. You've done a great job in maturing over the years. You and your wife have done an awesome job doing it on your own when you came off of your old jobs. Excellent work 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Brad, Buyer Products Company sells a shovel/tool clamp SH675SS. It can be welded or bolted on. A harbor Frieght ammo can or similar would work well for your gloves. Also if you haven't already I'd nut and bolt check that unit.
So I work as a driver/labour on a much bigger rear loader compactor collecting large item hard waste. It doesn't surprise me that things are already falling off the truck. They all have different personalities and qwerks that you have to get used to. We just got 8 new trucks and they all broke within the first 2 hours of using them. They all leak hydraulic fluid out of the fittings and running the PTO is all different for each truck. You just have to keep using it and learn the qwerks of the truck and you'll be fine. Constant problems are just the way of life with these trucks.
I've found this oddly satisfying to watch and enjoying the progress! Thank you for sharing and your message, I absolutely needed that reassurance not to allow myself to be overwhelmed by life's little obstacles.
I’m a municipal fire chief in NC and we buy fire trucks all the time that are all across the country. If you haven’t already done so, I would see if they have a mobile service tech or even a place that they’ve authorized folks to do their warranty work. It hasn’t happened to you yet and I hope it doesn’t, but you may have a serious issue come up. I would of course then call the dealer and explain your situation and see if they have mobile techs or a place they have or would consider letting them do the warranty work. Happens with fire trucks all the time.
Great video Brad, love to see the immense progress! You know I’ll be sitting here waiting for the next upload, and TOUCANS! I’m going to be training for garbage collecting soon, so I always love watching videos from a fellow Beginners Perspective!
Hey Brad, no need to apologize for getting philosophical on bad purchases. If anything, it makes me feel better about some financial purchase screw-ups I've made. And that's for people telling you how you should do things, you have a method of operation that works the best for you, and if it works, then no one should be complaining. (Obviously helpful and friendly suggestions are always good though) I have a small lawn care business out in Utah (a lot of my current setup inspired by you), and people think I am stupid for using an SUV for my work instead of a pickup truck. But for my method of operation and how I do things, an SUV works way better for me than a truck. I love your content and always have, keep up the good work 👍
Love seeing the progress and good to see you keep growing! Also, there is a saying from Riley on the Ambition strikes channel I love that I think you would like: "This is a what we're doing channel, not a how to channel" These videos are a how YOU are starting a trash business, not a "how to" or "you should" video and I think that perspective helps lots!
Get a binder clip and use that to clip your gloves together. Then you can just hang it somewhere on a hook on the truck (or add a hook). I use them to hold my gloves in my shed. That way 1 they are hanging so if they ever get wet they can dry efficiently and they are always together. never have to worry about 1 walking away. Great job this week.
Hey man!! I love your videos. I got lucky to find your first one of this series, and have been watching ever since. It is very unique. I am 17 and do lawn care and now am trying to start my own channel because of you. I get excited everything I see a vid man. Keep it up!!!! (I don't want a shout out, just love the vids)
Good to see its going well for you. When you tip a cart, keep the blade all the way up, which will allow for more trash to fit in the hopper. Also use the machine to your advantage! Shake the cart to get the trash out, as opposed to grabbing it yourself. Stuff falling off the truck is normal for the first little while, things are tightened to the minimum at the plants, and the owner usually has to tighten them.
For the glove holder, you're talking about should just put a little tool box 🧰 onto the side somewhere. Also brooms and flat shovels we normally put them on the opposite side of where you stand through the hold on handles to your step. Also inbetween the cab and the back of the bed we could put tools there as well that stay away from the compactor and everything else.
I totally understand you not wasting time getting a bracket fixed because of a 6 hour drive but have you read your warranty. Sometimes it says if you do any repairs yourself the entire warranty is void.
This practice is against US Federal law. If you push back, manufacturers will not void the warranty. Check out the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Essentially, the mfg. must prove that your work directly caused a failure before they can refuse repairs.
@@mynameismud08 Good to know, but if he is not willing to make a 6 hour drive I doubt he will be willing to get into a legal battle that will take years. By the way, Apple gets away with this daily with its devices. try getting your phone repaired if they see evidence of accessing your iPhone internals.
I'm not worried about something like that happening, but only time will tell. Also keep in mind the Isuzu and the packer are on separate warranties. If it's an Isuzu issue, I won't be going back to the dealer but rather a much closer Isuzu shop.
Completely agree with you on the warranty, Brad. It would have been a bad business decision to walk away on the terrible soldering job. Doesn't affect the functionality of the truck, not worth dealing with. Maybe give a short call to the dealer to get a rebate on the truck for your time painting it and the loss in value. But definitely not worth the trip. I hope this truck runs smoothly for a while!
I'm sorry to hear that! The first time I was really upset about it. We traded models a few times over the years and found out that is just the way it is. Sad that is the case but what can you do?
The people who say if they had a warranty they would never touch it themselves are people who have never had a warranty on anything. I value my time over everything, ain’t no way I’d drive 2-3hrs one way for a $5 worth of hardware but hey maybe we’re the idiots?
You will probably want to purchase a few extra parts to have on standby for the Toters, such as: Toter bars, they will eventually fall off. Extra lids. Extra wheels, and axle caps.
I noticed that you drive on the customers lawn and wondered if that is an issue or that is an acceptable method of trash pick up in your market? Love your channel and thank you for taking us along on your journey.
Where I work we have a super strong magnetic holder we put our gloves in at the end of the days which like you said keeps them out of the cab. It’s watertight. Big enough to put our vests in it also.
I can’t tell from thumb nail what brand truck u have. But those types of trucks are a blank slate. Example Isuzu makes the actual truck . Then it’s sent to a company that puts a utility body or flat bed or a trash compactor on it. It sounds like you’re having an issue with the trash compactor. I have an Isuzu with a utility body. I am very happy with my Isuzu. 3 years old and 30,000 miles+ on it. No break downs, no real issues. Isuzu trucks made in Michigan with GM V-8 and transmission. That being said I thank you for sharing. Small business owners can’t afford surprises. It can wipe them out. Your video helps those like you make better decisions.
For the last couple minutes with no talking I realized how much noise all the hydraulics make. I do quite a bit of shooting (rifles, pistols, shotguns) and I know a lot of people that have pretty bad tinnitus. I know the trash trucks not as loud as your mower/landscape equipment (or my pewpews) but how consistent your exposed to that noise level it may creep up on you, might want to get some ear pro for you and the wife. They have ones with Bluetooth so you can connect to your phone and use it as "Coms" as well so that would be a bonus.
We just got 2 brand new 2024 freightliners with pac techs. One got delivered with loose suspension bolts and the second one is getting a new pto and trans at 1200 miles. We were able to negotiate a rental paid for by the dealer
The other issue I've had with flash drives is leaving them in a desk drawer and needing something on that drive a few years later only to find the data is gone. I get that printed can get damaged too but I'm with you provide both.
some good advice for cleaning and stuff like that inside with the truck highly recommend getting those power washes with the hot water tanks on them and a soap attachment as well when I had my machine. I had one of those hot water pressure washers with a giant tank and it had like a chemical inside of it, but this chemical was like organic, so it cleaned the inside pretty good. I was like you when I first started garbage business. They got myself a little Isuzu NRR with a new way body on the back. and yeah, it was a learning curve but good for you man. Just wanted to give you some more advice about the cleaning processes of them.
In my business, we seem to have a lot more problems with the newer equipment than the older stuff to the point where we might rebuild our older units rather than buying new.
Your gonna need a bigger truck... RV's... depends on the make and model. We have always had Rockwood MiniLites and fit finish and build quality has been tip top. One we have now have had it 4 years, use it a lot and it is solid... Go through all makes and models at an rv show and the quality between brands jumps out at ya. Good luck with your trash business!
I understand your position on taking the truck even with the messed up welds. I hope you at least voiced your opinion about it so that the truck dealer can change their process so that their service gets better. Obviously their employee who did the work wasn’t qualified for that task and needs more training. It looks like he didn’t even grind the paint off before trying to weld it. That’s bush league.
On the highway definately have the packer down, here in Australia its driver policy for that. When cycling I belive your truck is able to keep tipping the bin, when the packer is about halfway up you should be able to tip the rest of the garbage out. This will make things a lot faster. Thanks for the video see you next week!
A warranty is only as good as the dealership that sold you the product. Regardless of what the warranty states, its all up to the dealership to make the decision. No one takes pride in what they do anymore. The just want your money and get you gone. Nonetheless....your business looks like its growing quickly. 😊 Love the videos thanks for sharing.
The glove solution is simple. Buy a spring clamp from Home Depot the ones that have the orange rubber handles. Then pinch the gloves to somewhere on the truck and there you go.
Bolt on a mailbox on the side of the truck facing forward on both sides of the truck a simple snap clamp to hold it shut going down the road will let you push your gloves in and never has to be in the truck. Also I wanted to let you know put conduit PVC Pipe held by conduit clamps is what you can put shovels or Look at Spencer Lawn Care and see if Product Defender racks can easily be put on a truck. Thank You keep up the great work.
Just another piece of advice, I would watch other people use rear loads. There’s plenty of trash videos on TH-cam😆. Watching other people and then implementing it into your work habit definitely helped me when I was first starting out.
I cannot believe someone welded that on there after you paid. I understand it’s your choice and you know things I don’t about the situation. But holy moly. I am shocked. And I wanna say that you are a hard worker, I love the channel and I love you, even though you don’t even know me. But I feel like I know you. SO WEIRD huh!, but my friend. I wish I would have subbed before you bought this truck. The side loader would have been a world difference. It honestly hurts me to see you buy this truck. I am not a hater. I am assuming since you share your life online you are open for feedback. I am just a neutral viewer. CAN you still return it? I mean, I hate to see you spend this kinda money for this. The side load, although more costly is worth it. OR a full size dump rear end. I am in full support. I love you guys. All the best ❤❤❤❤
Seeing you do this makes me wish you could extend the hydraulic arm so the trash can is lifted higher and it dumps easier. Maybe in the future have sensors added that automates the cycling of the hopper. That would be awesome additions to your quality of life there. But not easy ones to add.
When we rented an RV I asked the folks working (winter so it was slow) how often they turnover the vehicles - selling the old ones and buying new RVs. Yearly. They are so poorly built they dump them after a year and buy new ones. I'm curious if your competitors are also small operations... might be worth a support agreement with them if so. If your truck breaks down and goes in the shop, they pickup your routes and vice-versa. Just agree on some price for that? At least until you get big enough to need a second truck and crew. Once you have two trucks you can handle downtime by swapping crews and running the main truck.
Damn that’s rough you have to put the truck in park, apply parking brake, and enable the PTO. I work for a city municipality and we have a Hino cab and chassis with a standard size packer/hopper. Anyways, we can compact the trash while in motion as long as you do not exceed 5-10mph. Couldn’t imagine having to compact and conduct that series of steps to compact trash.
I agree about the truck's manual - for a $130,000 garbage truck like this, a printed manual in a binder is desirable. If they want to include a copy on a flash drive in addition, that's even better, flash drive are fairly cheap these days.
Brad, please explain further about not much room in the hopper. At 14:40 the blade was down, compactor all the way back, you dumped a can, you cycled the unit even though there was lots of room for the next can. Once the next can was dumped, there was still lots of room. I'm confused about what you said early in the video. Thanks.
Someone said don't cycle the stuff after every can, my point was that in some cases I have to. A full can into an empty hopper can fill the hopper and a second full can would overflow trash. 1:50 shows empty hopper, the next can fills it (unless, of course, I want to touch every bag to make more room. In many cases I don't because of trash juice).
@@CopperCreekCuts But the compactor wasn't back at 1:50 like it was at 14:40, so yeah not much room. I guess that goes to what you said about getting your system and efficiency down like clockwork. Looking forward to more !
11:10 Imvest in a box of nylon lock nuts or a bottle of lock tight, the vibrations will loosen up that kind of hardware and always do your post trip inspection. ✌️
Hi I just wanted to let you know that wireless headsets would be great for you and your wife. Charge them while your sleeping and take them on your route. Cost in front is high but would pay off.
Ive seen new york trash collection guys run their PTO on the fly while dryving, I think they disable the parking safety switches and brake switches so they can cycle while moving to next stop.
I so agree about the electronic user manuals. It's a pain in the neck to have to stop what you're doing to pull one up online, or on your computer if you have to download it from a manufacturer's website. And they use the excuse "We''ve gone green!" to save themselves a few bucks. So annoying.
I could not help but laugh when you said sometimes the gloves hold an odor I don't know you might not be doing it right I don't remember anything I own when I was a gunslinger not smelling like at least one of the garbage cans
Would it be quicker if a can only had a bag or two in it just to throw it in the truck out of the can instead of using the truck to tilt the can? I’m not a garbage man or run a business just something I noticed. I really love the videos and look forward to new ones coming out.
So you can run the packer/slide with your bin cart fully up with your "BC" Bin on it as the packer will not hit your bin or pic up cart at all and what's left inside if it will into your hopper just to let you know👌
Make sure you calculate all your costs to make sure you are making ends meet. Just as an example, if you assume the truck will only last 5 years , that means it costs you about $520 a week for the truck. You also have maintenance, insurance, tags, etc. I would hate to see after working so hard, that you just lose money.
Hey great video i would like to say is with rear loaders it is a good idea to make sure you Clean behind the blade just because rubbish can end up behind the blade
As European this is mind boggling for me that people in the U.S don't sort out the trash. Coats, pizza carboard box and everything goes into the same place instead of recycle n stuff. :D
We aren't there yet but one day will be and that was part of the rationale behind the truck. I just got the statement for the first HELOC payment, it was $860, which is less than we thought it would be. With 80 cans on the street as of today we are looking at $240 monthly in liner costs (if we still used them). So that is almost 30% of the payment in liners!

You are so chill about It all, I think that Is important In life! Less stress keeps you healthy In body and mind! Good for you! 💪
That’s exactly the level of philosophy I’m looking for on a trash truck channel!
Would you ever consider doing a full uncut video of you picking up trash?
Great video Brad, love to see the immense progress! You know I’ll be sitting here waiting for the next upload, and TOUCANS! I’m going to be training for garbage collecting soon, so I always love watching videos from a fellow Beginners Perspective!
Hey Brad, no need to apologize for getting philosophical on bad purchases. If anything, it makes me feel better about some financial purchase screw-ups I've made.
And that's for people telling you how you should do things, you have a method of operation that works the best for you, and if it works, then no one should be complaining. (Obviously helpful and friendly suggestions are always good though)
I have a small lawn care business out in Utah (a lot of my current setup inspired by you), and people think I am stupid for using an SUV for my work instead of a pickup truck.
Great job this week.
congrats on the new truck!
💯💯💯
The trash truck wrap looks great!!!!
I appreciate your videos and also love your growth with the comments ❤❤❤
I 100 % agree with you man we all have over own options an the way we do stuff all that madders is your happy with your truck
@@CopperCreekCuts fwiw I would’ve done exactly what you did with or without a warranty. Congrats on the truck btw. I hoe your business flourishes.
We just got a new RV and we had the exact same experience
I'm sorry to hear that! The first time I was really upset about it. We traded models a few times over the years and found out that is just the way it is. Sad that is the case but what can you do?
You make a lot of good points, similar things with tow trucks. Wreckers are usually built with a lot of human intervention which causes some problems.
The people who say if they had a warranty they would never touch it themselves are people who have never had a warranty on anything. I value my time over everything, ain’t no way I’d drive 2-3hrs one way for a $5 worth of hardware but hey maybe we’re the idiots?
You will probably want to purchase a few extra parts to have on standby for the Toters, such as:
Toter bars, they will eventually fall off.
SUPER GREAT VIDEOS HOPE YOU HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND 😊
All modern vehicles have build quality issues. People are just slapping things together to meet production goals. Profit is king over everything else.
some good advice for cleaning and stuff like that inside with the truck highly recommend getting those power washes with the hot water tanks on them and a soap attachment as well when I had my machine.
Brad Can you please do more ASMR trash route videos. I really like the ASMR videos. Thank again for the awesome video
I love watching your videos every week it’s such a highlight to my day, always cannot wait to watch the next video, keep up the good effort!!!!
I'm with you on this one, if it is something simple I'll just fix it.
So cool man thanks for sharing!
Looks like you've finally got a good rhythm using the new trash truck. Good luck with the trash business, seems like it's picking up steam for you.
Have you look in to any kind of magnetic broom hooks? they might fit your use case.
Love the videos thanks for sharing.
5:32 I felt that! The irritation, the WTF really moment!
The glove solution is simple. Buy a spring clamp from Home Depot the ones that have the orange rubber handles. Then pinch the gloves to somewhere on the truck and there you go.
Think need a polehook for bags that dont drop at landfill. Have you ran any appliances threw it yet.
Just curious, How long does your route take each time you run it?
Gator hooks on Amazon has some crazy strong magnetic tool hooks. Maybe that would work to hold your broom. And no welding
Hi I just wanted to let you know that wireless headsets would be great for you and your wife. Charge them while your sleeping and take them on your route. Cost in front is high but would pay off.
Keep up the good work
Came for the trash stayed for the stoicism.
Cool videos!
I wonder in future you might get a Side loader garbage truck that would be awesome
Ive seen new york trash collection guys run their PTO on the fly while dryving, I think they disable the parking safety switches and brake switches so they can cycle while moving to next stop.
If you got a full sized garbage truck, would you ever get 1 or 2 yard rear loading dumpsters for farms and houses?
I so agree about the electronic user manuals. It's a pain in the neck to have to stop what you're doing to pull one up online, or on your computer if you have to download it from a manufacturer's website. And they use the excuse "We''ve gone green!" to save themselves a few bucks. So annoying.
You have a possessed trash truck! 😱
You can tell that the business is growing based on how many stops he has! A few weeks ago each stop lasted 20 seconds or so and now they are sped up!
What back up plans do you have if the trash truck goes down and the capacity of your dump trailer is not enough due to the increase in houses served?
Good video
Is the raw footage still gonna be posted with this truck I love those videos
I love watching your series and don’t listen to them idiots your doing better than what they’d be doing
Brad, are you ever going to do commercial containers? Just wondering
I saw some Amazon boxes; tell your customs NOT to trash and recycle them. That will save space in the trash can.
Crazy you were basically spending a truck payment in liners. The new truck is way more efficient!
We aren't there yet but one day will be and that was part of the rationale behind the truck. I just got the statement for the first HELOC payment, it was $860, which is less than we thought it would be. With 80 cans on the street as of today we are looking at $240 monthly in liner costs (if we still used them). So that is almost 30% of the payment in liners!
in the future do you plan on getting side loaders?
