As of this recording, on Amazon for $19.98: amzn.to/3dmmKYe
Shanghai Aowen Painting materials co. ltd
    Same people as Paul Rubens
This feels like a student or hobbyist grade line to their more professional Paul Rubens line
I really like the paul Rubens tube watercolors, and at some point, it would be cool to compare all three- Paul Rubens tubes, Paul Rubens half pans, and the Meiliang Pigments

Inside this metal palette is a fairly flimsy plastic tray that holds the half pans. These halfpans are not in like individual plastic replaceable halfpans. I feel like these are probably extruded, rather than poured, given the setup.

Swatching on Blick Studio Cottonrag Watercolor paper
Colors seem to be bright and vibrant, pretty saturated, but may also contain a lot of optical brighteners, as the water seems to muddy fast
If you let water sit on them too long, they get goopy
Most of the colors are pretty saturated but the burnt sienna is really weak. Colors are finely granulated, but a bit more gritty than their Paul Rubens counterparts. If you're paying the $20 Amazon price, I definitely think these are worth $20 so far, they're alright for $45, but that's encroaching on Paul Rubens price territory.
    The Mud Test:
    Day 2, Layer 2
    Spritzed with water to activate
Some really interesting granulation with these colors, similar to the Paul Rubens tubes. Nice.
These colors do dry far less intense than their Paul Rubens counterparts, but I didn't notice much if any color reactivation. So far, it seems like these don't turn to mud, which is my biggest complaint with more opaque watercolors.
    Mud Test, Layer Three
    Spritzed with water to activate.
Surprising and impressive amount of granulation with these paints. Paints seem to layer, rather than turn to mud, which is wonderful and surprising from paints that I assume are student grade.
    MeiLiang wrap up
One of the half pans fell out and it definitely seems like an extruded paint, not a poured paint. If anyone has videos if their manufacturing process though, please send them my way!

I think these are the budget set to beat. I compare all of the under $40 sets to these and so far the only cheap sets I find compatible at that price are the himi set with the diamond shaped pans, the superior fan style palettes, the doodling 36 set (for some reason it is different from the 48 set) and the artsy 24 half pan sets which might be made by superior. It won't hinder anyone's learning. Also Kimberly crick did a lightfast test in these and They held up well. Nice teview!

Even if the paints were completely useless, that is a gorgeous tin and worth the price alone when compared to alternatives of the same size. There are so many budget brands right now with impressive and unique tins. The plastic that houses the cakes is easily lifted to reveal plenty of space for half or full pans, and if you enjoy the paints they can be transferred into empty half pans for better storage. I would never expect pigment information at this price point so that's a non issue.

Mei Liang/Pretty Excellent is from Paul Rubens's Caroline range, which is student grade. The professional range is Paul Rubens, which is artist grade. You can identify each range by the colour of a case, lid or box packaging:
    Light blue = student grade
    Pink = artist grade
Dark blue (tubes only) = artist grade and special/limited edition, consisting one of six acclaimed contemporary Chinese artists' selections from Rubens's full artist-grade collection. From what I see, there are two selections currently available on Amazon - one with two ballet dancers on the box cover and a bouquet of flowers on the other box. So be sure to check the list of colours from each dark-blue box before you decide which to buy.

Don't usually comment, and I am definitely a newer subscriber, but I really appreciate you taking the time to run through this set as I am trying to find something to use for my own personal comics project, so thank you so much!

Thank you for The video Becca! I'm glad you like this set, I think it's a good entry level palette for anyone who wants good paints but doesn't want to spend too much time selecting colours of individual tubes and whatsoever

Hi, thanks for the first impressions video, would be great to see them in action too. Do these paints give any pigment info, I don't think I saw any in the video and am not sure, if there was any on the box maybe?
When it comes to the "mud test": lifting and staining are usually properties of the pigments used, so it can happen in any brand and paint and is not related to the quality of the paint. :)
So far I did not try this palette out, but I really like how the swatches look and the colour of the tin - adorable! We definitely need more cute colourful tins for our paints. :D
    Have an awesome day!

No, these do not come with pigment info, only the Paul Rubens ones do, the artist's ones, and I think even their other student grade paints (they are called Caroline).
And yes, you are right about the mud and lifting, it does not always have to be a question of quality.

@@justacatwhocantype thank you very much for the info! I got the Paul Rubens sets with pigment info in the dark blue box (artist grade) and light blue box (student grade), which sadly have no names, so I got curious about these other sets too. Thank you!
