I think the word you are looking for is flocculation- where small particles group together into a structure called a floc. This is common is student grade paints when they use fillers like lithopone. Mei Liang paints are super fun to use.

I found this, in case anyone else is interested: One theory, supported by chemists, states that granulation is the appearance of visible particles of pigment on paper due to the uneven depositing of the sediment, whereas flocculation is the mutual attraction of small particles of pigment into groups that creates patterns on the paper. Beautiful quality and your loose artwork at the end is amazing as always. Love those paints 🎨🖌️ . My late dad used to be a fire fighter, sadly he passed away in July 2000 , just 5 years after his retirement xx .

It seems that most reviewers are quite impressed with this brand and rank it as somewhere 'above' student grade because it preforms so well. Although pigment numbers aren't available.
I have 2 QOR sets in my cart as a Birthday gift for myself next week. You just saved me a LOT OF MONEY 😂😂 Now I can afford a regular set and some Schminke super-granulating sets 😃😃

I don't care about that anyway, I needed to know if they are opaque and if they lift or not. I got everything I needed to know from your video. (I suppose the Daler Rowney are "Aquafine" ?) - For the lightfast of the Meiliang, Kimberly Crick Art (you tube) did a test over 1 year, she also provides serious informations on the pigments used. About ten fleeting colors are to be removed from this set, but there are still many good ones left and at this price it is worth it.
You felt that the cheap plastic tray was a negative, but i like it. It makes the palette much lighter than the ones with a metal slotted tray. And because this set is inexpensive, it's the one i like to take everywhere -- so lightweight is a bonus.

Hi, I've only used Gansai Tambi paints once, so am probably not the best person to ask. They are more opaque than the Meiliang though, so I guess it comes down to how transparent you'd want your finished paintings to be?

Ha. It didn't feel much like living under a rock! It was the UK Firefighters Sailing Challenge - sail hard, get battered, sleep a couple of hours every night, play and laugh even harder with a couple hundred firefighters in the evenings! (And win a trophy 😁)
No, Paul Rubens are the professional ones from the same family. Mei Liang doesn't have pigment info, and I think there's a possibility of dye being added to some, from what I've subsequently read.
@@helencryer Hi Helen, I had some of these a few years ago and they were definitely dye- based rather than pigment based. While that makes the colors bright, I didn't like them nearly as much as you do, but perhaps they have been improved.
I don't know if the formula has changed or not - their literature talks about pigment, but I really don't know what's in them. All I know is that for the style of painting I did in the video, I couldn't tell much difference between them and the Roman Szmals.
@@helencryer Many people like them, and I do think they have been reformulated in recent years. Kimberly Crick here on You Tube is a good source for info about pigments in various watercolors. She has done several reviews, generally positive but she did report issues with dyes and lightfast ratings.

Since making this video, I had a look at other TH-cam videos on this brand, and it does seem to review as one of the better cheaper sets out there.

I'm not sure if they are Aquafines, sorry - the palette doesn't say, and it's pretty old.
