Sister Andrea - The Mahavishnu Orchestra
John McLaughlin - guitar
Jan Hammer - keyboards
Jerry Goodman - violin
Rick Laird - bass
Billy Cobham - drums
You'll never hear a band like THAT again!!
I fear not!👍
Jan Hammer's sense of time I find frightening. He is truly an exceptional keyboardist.
8:10 to 9:00 is some of the best drumming ever ... Thank you, Mr. Cobham!
The classic Mahavishnu line up in full effect!!!
To this day NOBODY can get the sounds Jan did out of the Moog, i remember seeing this on In Concert on ABC and it blew my 16 year old mind!
Jan Hammer, absolute keyboard genius.
This one of the best productions of the Mahavishnu Orchestra on you tube. I was fortunate to see the Mahavishnu Orchestra 3 times in 1973 including Birds of fire, Between nothingness and Eternity and their final concert at Avery Fisher hall . This video shows how incredibly tight the band is with outstanding playing by Jerry Goodman and billy Cobham. Incredible band that gave 100%outstanding performances in 1973.!.
Totally agree-saw them at Avery Foisher as well. Blew my mind-still does.
I first heard Jerry Goodman play around 1971 when he was in the Chicago based jazz-rock band The Flock. If you've never heard them; they definitely are worth checking out. Especially the song called "Clown" FYI
Fantastic! This must be the clip that I saw on Don Kirshner's rock concert (tv show ca 1974). I tape recorded the audio. Whenever I played it back I could hardly believe Jan Hammer was able to produce these other-worldly sounds, live. Forty years later I see the video, and it convinces me again.
Yep, this is it. I had heard Birds on an obscure radio station in June two months after its release and bought the LP. This was on TV just 6 months latrer and absolutely blew this 16 year old's mind. Still does, ans to this day NOBODY can play a Moog like Jan, except MAYBE Wakeman, albeit a different style of music.
nice that they did it close to the original tempo
later, they were always trying to play beyond human capabilities
one of Jan's better tunes.
Jerry Sounds Incredible. Jan otherworldly and Billy out of this world!
I was fortunate enough to see them twice. They were the opening act for Emerson, Lake and Palmer the first time which was amazing because Cobham and Palmer were both major influences on me. That's when I fell in love with Tama Superstars, they sounded incredible...I can't believe they would blaspheme the name Superstar with that crap they're making now...they're not even close to the original Superstars .
He was playing Fibes or Gretsch back then. Superstars didn’t come out until 1978 or 1979.
Great upload for MO fans. I am constantly amazed at how these guys could wind their way in and out the theme and then hit the breaks and coalesce again. Great dynamics as well, wish more of this line-up's last performances were available. Good stuff here.
Jan and Jerry were unhappy but didn't have the guts to confront John. In a 1982 interview, John spoke about the Japanese tour in Sep 73: "The real problem was with Jan and Jerry. When we came to Osaka, I said, 'If you have something on your mind, just say you hate me, just tell me. It’s okay. Tell me and things will get better'. But neither of them would say a word." All they had to do was talk to him, but they didn't - they played out the ensuing three months of US gigs and John let them go at the end of the year. their grievances unheard (they wouldn't have fitted in on "Apocalypse" anyway) and when John discovered his new rhythm section in Narada and Ralphe, Billy - and Rick - were doomed. End of.
This was a composition of Jan Hammer...it was to the began the end of this phenomenon group.Hammer,Cobham and Goodman wanted there songs and credits but J.McLaughlin wanted control of all what was to be presented in all content.A great band.
I have always loved the MO. Their players are all incredible musicians. I unfortunately the camera work is very distracting
I'm surprised to see McLaughlin wearing shoes ,my wife & I followed the ZAPPA/Mahavishnu tour the entire summer of 71 & not once did I see John wear shoes .
the Palace is in Hollywood
being from NYC, I'm wondering where this filmed.
I was probably there, so either The Beacon or . . .
the Palladium ...??
TheTimananda I believe the Palladium was called the Academy of Music prior to 1978 and it would seem the likely place for them to play in NYC in 1973. It was a great mid size venue much like the Beacon or the Felt Forum.
yes, you are correct and The Beacon was another fine venue in those days
thanks, Brion
This is SICK. One of my favorite original MO tunes.
This band could always take you on amazing journeys!!
Incredible skill and talent over the years...
I saw them about a day or two later in Berkeley, CA. Intense concert. Best ever! 12th row center. YEAH!!
Exceedingly better than the version from Between nothingness and eternity. Richer and less lightheadedness!! Solos are much more approachable and comprehensive, clearer than almost kafkian central Park concert.
Disagree.Loved the ragged intensity of central Park.
I would tend to agree, since i believe McLaughlin used the Rex Bogue for "Love, Devotion and Surrender"(?) which I find to be some of the most savage and dexterous electric 12 string playing ever!!!
This must be late in the history of MO mark 1 with John on the special ordered rainbow double neck, and the whole band is on the same high level. Only Corea' s RTF wirh Bill Connors comes close. I know there were issues on money and the recording of The Lost Trident Sessions that split the band, but could they continued in some way and in what direction? We'll never know ...
A masterpiece.👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Wow! I didn't know that Rex Bogue guitar was played with this lineup.
Thanks for uploading this performance.
More more more more more... I want more!!! Cool stuff, dude!! Thank you.
Can you believe it these guys opened for Aerosmith.
Seriously!!!??? What an odd pairing..................
I would've lLOVED to see the looks on the arrow-smith audince!!
Lol!!!!
@@gerardvivanco9925 Aerosmith had to up their game seriously!!
IMO it was the other way round, Aerosmith's first album came out in 1973 and they weren't as big then. Joey Kramer said he used to watch Cobham after their set.
As well as that the version of Sister Andrea on the 'Between Nothingness And Eternity' album had some great sustain sounds on the 12 string solo. JM said in an interview that sadly the Rex Bogue was destoyed in accident at home when it fell off a bench and split in two.
Try to check out "Sister Andrea" performed on November 24th 1973 at Jai Alai Fonton in Miami! - - th-cam.com/video/6kqCRGDb5os/w-d-xo.html - - John's incredible solo starting at 00:36:27 and ending at 00:41:10 . This is the best performance (not only of "SisterAndrea") i've ever heard.
The accident happened before a concert and John had to play a Gibson Les Paul.
Mr Cameraman I would have liked to see the mounstuous percussion performance at 7'-8'
Outstanding but lacked the ragged frantic intensity of the Central Park recording.
Yeah, that's for sure...I guess that's the kind of musician they crank out a the Conservatory of Vienna...Patrick Moraz went there too, and his style shows some similarities. One interesting tidbit I learned is that keyboards were not Moraz's first instrument...he was a violinist, and to tell you the truth, I've never heard him play vioin...that would be interesting. I sure love the work he did with Yes! Brilliant!
70’s,that is all, there will never be another decade like it.
Whoooo jan killin the minimoog!!!!!!!
Autan la musique est bonne, autant la façon de filmer est à gerber ! Que ceux qui ont fait le film aillent se jeter !
3.20 in it's billy's 'spectrum' as sampled by massive attack
EPIC. Great to see them play this. So used just listening to libe album. This laid the ground for future fusion modern groups. Jerry, Billy Jan & John still the best of the best.
I hope kids enjoy them. I got aware in 1986.. I said Oh ok! This is where J Beck DiMeola Edward Van get there speedy stuff from
wish i was alive to watch them live. the 5 are killing the fucking instruments but JAN OHMYGOD
WHOA!!!
It a Rex Bogue custom . It sounded great on the Visions Of Emerald Beyond album , plenty of sustain and tone. Problem is not the guitar but recording quality on some of these concerts. SG doubleneck more limited - only about 20 frets and doesn't have as many sounds as the Bogue custom.
I know McLaughlin really loved that Bogue and that it had 'hot wired' pickups and lots of sounds, more frets, narrower diameter neck and ....so on, but I have A:B-ed the Bogue and the Gibson from several youtube concerts and to my ears, the Bogue just sounds wimpier, less defined than the SG.
@@uncasist stays in tune way better than the SG though. The six-string part of the SG was a total dog on a lot of the arly recordings.
one if my favorite tunes!--- nice to see it on video --- that dbl neck guitar had to weight 20#
Soon before they disbanded... they are SO not into it. Mclaughlin's new Rex Bogue guitar looks great but, somebody wired the pickups out of phase or something- there is no definition to the sound- fuzzy limp blur. His doubleneck SG was So much better sounding.
i saw their final show in 1973 and it was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. jerry goodman is incredible in this video and Billy Cobham amazes me always on his drumming.
HOLY CRAP, what a rare vid!
Guy Smiley is my favorite character on Sesame Street.
Still sounds as exciting as when I saw them live all those years ago. Jerry kills in this tune!
Wow, John's guitar, a Bogen (?) sounds limp and lame compared to his SG doubleneck. No tone, no sustain, juts pluck. I'm usually not Jerry G fan, but he picks up the energy. Let's hear it for really good instruments and great players.
Agree
Wow. Jerry Goodman just completely mops everyone in this. Excellent video. To say that I wish I was alive to see concerts like this greatly underplays just how much excitement I get from seeing and hearing these guys.
On the bootlegs I've heard, Jerry is on another world.
@Garfnart ... do you have the full concert?
Does anyone knoe the time signature during Jans solo??
I'm hearing 17 beats in there. 7, 10, 7, 10, 7, 10, etc....
keith wilson gts1 is correct; that's 17/8.
I remember reading that. He indicated that it was a sign that the Mahavishnu Orchestra was ..done. Ooph!
John's playing his double rainbow! beautiful
