I saw a program with members of Frank Zappa's band who spoke about touring with the original Mahavishnu Orchestra which opened for Zappa during that time. Everyone single one of them talked about what a watershed experience it was for them, transforming their ideas about music and their awe and admiration for that band's virtuosity and orginality.
John McGlaughlin.....the greatest living guitarist on the planet earth for going on over 60 years...... In an age where giants walked the earth....he was always at the front of the line...just ask Jeff Beck...When Miles Davis names a song after you on perhaps his greatest album... Bitches Brew.... You know the man was something very special.... God bless Johnny McGlaughlin....
More than a genius, McLaughlin could bring out the best in other musicians while composing, arranging, and directing very complex, innovative music. Only Zappa and Miles were in his class.

Funny, I landed on Mahavishnu Orchestra after a prolonged stint down a Zappa rabbit hole, which lead me to his work with Miles and all of that a great music Miles did in the early/mid 70s; it was really a special and creative time in Music in general. Geniuses all of them.

Ponty is not a favourite of mine as he once was cause it's the improvisation that is the heart jazz. Sadly Ponty is not very much into that. He wants the music to be as much as on the record when he's doing concerts.
Just freaking mind blowing. They literally turn ‘Dawn’ inside out, but still manage to hold on to the essence of it. This is improv of the highest magnitude.
They were funky as hell, too. Even in crazy time signatures.

Anyone else notice how awesome Rick Laird's playing is on one word! That's the best I've ever heard from Rick! Even better than the Buddy Rich album he did. I forget the name but it was recorded in 1970. I've been a huge fan of Mahavishnu Orchestra ever since I started playing drums. Cobhams a fantastic yet daunting task to study while learning the rudiments and yet easier because of Cobhams use of rudiments. You could hear him use paradiddles between the snare and Toms and know what hand was hitting each Tom(in the days where the toms went from high to low) Billy Cobham always used rudiments in the most musical manner. Accent's,space and poly rythm with precise accuracy and a feel that is so organic! Billy just has the slickest fills da Boom dappppda Papapapapa Boom!
Rick Laird has always been criminally underrated
This period was one of the highlights of the music!
John's right hand just floats over the guitar. That technique even beginners should learn early on, as you can play with more control and speed. Here's the rub:
There is only one John Mclaughlin!!!
He actually rests his wrist on the bridge ;)
You can see it here, and he also has said so in interviews.
Nothing is forced in his playing. He also uses small Dunlop Jazz 3 picks. He's got a very different feel for electric, and I think it comes from his feel as an acoustic player where he's equally adept.

An Absolute Miracle! It's the equivalent of traveling back through time and experiencing Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Handel and Paganini Live! My Infinite Gratitude... AUM.... Question... does the entire Concert footage still exist? Priceless! Blessed to have seen the Lads five times... Their still a Century ahead of Time! This footage proves it!
The entire one hour TV show exists with performances by It's a Beautiful Day and Taj Mahal, but there is no more footage of the MO that I have. We located the original director and asked but he wasn't even aware this show existed. So it might be somewhere in some TV vault in Seattle waiting to be found but for now we are blessed to at least have this. Glad you enjoyed it !

Been a huge fan since 1987. They broke up when I was 8 months. I first heard 'Miles Beyond' on the radio on Emerson College radio WERS 88.9. I had been playing the drums for 2 months and was borrowing Billy Cobham's 'SPECTRUM. I recognized Cobhams fast rolls around the kit immediately! I got Birds of Fire on CD then Inner mounting Flame on cassette tape. By 88 I had all 3 on CD until 1999,Wich was 'The lost Trident Sessions'! I love this Band! legionary

The best live performance of One Word I've heard. Pity the climax is ruined as a video experience by the intrusion of silly special effects so that the musicians can't be seen... just as Mc Laughlin's playing is absolutely hitting the stratosphere. Cut to about 12:00 to hear what I mean.

Damn, at the end, there was end of vital transformation.
There's so little video footage of MO playing from "Birds of Fire" that this is an absolute gem! Even just a small piece of "Open Country Joy" live is astounding!
That being said, whoever the director Don Lacombe was, I guess we can't completely hold him to the fire for cutting away from amazing solos to view crappy "psychedelic" video effects as it was the norm for the times. But Jeez, the decision to completely obliterate the image of the band with the effects had me screaming at the screen "Stop it!!" :-)

Thank you, saw this same show live Fall 72’ and winter 73’, John and band were just astonishing. During this period many bands began to hire better audio mixers and the results were at times very close to the original audio recordings with the mics placed on all amps and drum sets. Saw Jeff Beck and his Wired band a few years later with parallel results.

I read somewhere that robert fripp was so intimidated by "The inner mounting flame" that he couldn't listen to the 2nd side because he was just so blown away.

In a way it does.
No guitar player rode the border between self-expression and self-indulgence with more dexterity than John McLaughlin. There are times when he is the biggest show-off on the planet, then there are other times when he is sublime. I guess you have to take the good with the bad.

Did he ride on the coat tails of the other players? was he more of a team player when he went into his shakti Indian acoustic?
He made a great Christmas record but his management Nat Weiss, wouldnt let him release it. He was into Scientology at the time and they don't Accept holidays other than the birthday of their founder Elron Blubber

The sad part of seeing this clip for the first time is that today (3/18/2021) all five members of the original Mahavishnu Orchestra (as shown in the video) are alive and well today. Their split in 1973 must have been under some really bad terms. I would love to see a reunion show. Even if it were a cut down version due to their age.
Rick Laird is not well and is in hospice care. Billy Cobham is rehabbing from hip replacement surgery. Did you not see the Meeting of the Spirits tour with John McLaughlin a few years ago where he played a set of MO tunes ? If not check it out on youtube. And I would recommend reading Power, Passion & Beauty by Walter Kolosky to understand about the split in 1973.
@@whodowedo I did not know about Rick Laird's condition. Thank you for posting. Very sad news. I did catch videos of McLaughlin playing some classic MO tunes. It was fun to here them being played by the master some 40+ years later.
John McLaughlin did try a number of times to organize reunion concerts. At one point all but one member agreed. Eventually JM gave up and said "its not meant to be, but at least this way the Mahavishnu Orchestra will be remembered as it was". The real shame is they didn't stay together a little longer and didn't have had to keep touring so much that they had a chance to write and record more new material. The 3 albums plus the Lost Trident Sessions is not quite enough.
At this point, Rick has passed away. RIP.
Rick Laird did sadly pass. I saw Billy Cobham play a few months ago.Uses a cane to walk but once he sits down behind the kit,,,,, like old times. Still has the magic. Blogger correct, Mclaughlin wanted the reunion but Goodman and Hammer( primarily Hammer) just could not let the animosity go and has done very well for himself.

+whodowedo oh I know... I've watched this vid at least 25 times! Dawn is just such a lovely composition and there aren't too many live versions on yt. Wish the full vital transformation was on this vid as well... But I'm just grateful this exists!!!

+Raysynn . The M.O. played the Paramount twice in 1973- 3/26, and 11/17 . The Telerock video has Taj Mahal opening for them. Perhaps you 're thinking of the 11/17 show ? I would love if you have a ticket stub, or something from the show you went to that would show Joe Walsh with Barnstorm as the opener. thanks !

+whodowedo The MO played the Paramount 11/11/72 with Barnstorm opening. In 1973, the 3/26 gig did indeed have Taj Mahal opening, but for the 11/17 show the MO opened for Return To Forever.

I think I'm pretty talented sometimes. Then I Iisten to this and realize I have a long way to go. The level of mastery is impossible. There is complete abandon and risk in each of the players. Inspiring and impossible!!!

Johns 12 string work on Open Country Joy was understated brilliance
whatever game this is - it's still early days - for fusion, even early for prog rock - yet these guys turn the beat around circa 5:00, and into smooth ensemble 64ths - whoa- and Cobham of course is breaking ground

I remember when TV would ruin many performances of bands with their stupid graphics like they did here...as if we'd rather see swirling images instead of virtuoso musicians playing their instruments...other than that I'm grateful this footage of The MO exists.
yes, during this time period, there were new graphics created and it was like giving directors a new toy to play with so they would "psychedelicize" every rock band's performance, especially during instrumental passages. Or they would show extreme facial close-ups while there was a great solo going on. Or like the Don Kirshner videos have 3 cameras superimposed on each other. They were just trying to be creative but of course we just want to see the band play. Enjoy !
“Dawn” is one of the most stirring, well-crafted songs from the “Inner Mounting Flame” album, and I’ve never understood why McLaughlin went out of his way to wreck it whenever he played it in concert.
I’ve got a couple other versions on boots, and he does the same damn thing.

When you say full concert do you mean the M.O. portion, because Taj Mahal was the opening act for them at that show and I do have him playing a few songs. As far as the M.O., I have not been able to find any more footage.

One of greatest guitarplayer..a musician in the line of Strawinsky and Menuhin...but Im not so fond of his electricguitar sound.
Where's the full concert video?
Unknown- it was edited into these segments which is how it was originally broadcast. It's possible there could be footage somewhere in a tape vault. We contacted the director and he said he did not know of any existing footage. In fact he was shocked to see this.
