How could I not have heard of him until now?! I just discovered him by seeing an (arr by Roland Dyens) credit from Erik Satie. I might have died incomplete if not having stumbled upon this gem of a musician! Life is too short to find all the gems of life.
There was no one like Roland. His guitar playing was his alone and it seemed like only he could play his compositions and arrangements in the spirit that he did it.
@@szymonantoniak1772yea that s true but this kind of arr like a night in tunisia , no one is playing it like him or better that s why he s the best guitarist (in my opinion) rest in peace master
This gentleman obviously has a jazz sense of timing to go with his classical skill. It's a shame that he struggled with heart disease for all of his adult life. R.I.P. Messr Dyens.
In the end about 4:23 you can clearly hear how he impressed his struggle into the very fast and hard guitarplay. I directly heard how much he suffered and knew it might be his last show, cause his heart was to kind and to big to carry.
I had the chance to see him playing in Grenoble for 12 years... just amazing. There was a snow storm and the heating was broken... In spite of frozen fingers, it was almost perfect and such an expressive performance!
A friend invited me to a concert in Toronto recently where Roland performed in Yorkville to celebrate Eli Kassner's 85th birthday. It was an amazing experience. No one moved, coughed... you could hear a pin drop. He is quiet amazing. Like a fine wine, a good book, a gourmet meal. Bravo! LE
OMG, could not stop tapping my foot, and then my whole leg, through this one, HE'S GOT SWING!!!. There's more going on in this one guitar than most bands. Just amazing.
I have been listening and playing the classical guitar for a while, I heard many great guitarists. But what Roland Dyens is able to deliver in beauty and technique is just amazing. Also check out Berimbau and Nuages arranged by R Dyens as well. Bravo Roland c'est du bonheur, ma mère m'a fait écouter nuages il y a longtemps, je n'ai cessé de vous écouter depuis!
He is the ultimate solo guitar player. He does not need a drummer, a base player, nor any accompanists, he can do everything on his guitar at once. 究極のソロギタリストですね。ドラマーもベーシストもいりません。 彼一人で全部やってのけます。
RIP we lost marvelous, outstanding ,splendid and wonderful guitar composer.... maybe he was a talented and gifted guitar composer per one hundred years.
This man is a living legend! Does anyone in the world has imagination as he to do arrangements? Or to play in such a masterful and yet, original way? I doubt it. "Long Live Roland Dyens!"
complete genius! he came to my country (paraguay) last year... he amazed me in every way possible. This man is what I call, a TRUE musician. Music from the soul
that was without a doubt a quite marvelous interpretation and an all round genius performance of A Night in Tunisia by the late great Roland Dyens. i'm now going to have a listen to dizzy Gillespie original and RIP to the both great men
Whoa, umm, just whoa... That was the coolest thing I've seen in a long time now, I was captivated the whole time. First I've heard of this fellow but safe to assume I'm hooked.
im 15 and im learning classical guitar in a conservatory my teacher learned with him, and it shows she can play music out of thin air no sheets no nothing amazing...
Night and Day is a book by Roland. Its got this song, all of me, polka dots and moon beams. He is probably one of the coolest guys i have met! he did a master class at Fredonia and just blew everyone away.
Roland Dyens great composer of classical guitar like me. He created of master pieces.Exelent arranged of "A Night in Tunisia" (Dizzy Gillespie). Wonderful!!!
My father studied with Roland Dyens at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique. They both studied under, Albert Ponce, and I had the pleasure of meeting Roland many times in my life. He would call me "joufflu" because I was always a bit rotund. What I wish people knew about him is that he was a very funny man, and he loved to joke around! The last time I saw him in person was after he finished "Sor & Giuliani", and my family visited him at the Conservatoire where my dad once learned. Roland became the teacher there taking the position of Maestro Ponce, deservedly. I kind of knew that it was going to be the last time I would see him, due to raising my young family and not wanting to travel too much. His last words to me were, "I'm glad that you did not want to play the guitar like your father and me, because it gets tiring to do this as you get older (touring/travel). Suerte, joufflu!". . .in reality none of this happened, but thank you for reading my story! I hope I brought a smile to your face today!
Thank you for your brilliant arrangement and performance and for your talent!!! God bless you and your creativity!!! Your friends Olga & Vladimir Krylov.
Roland Dyens definitely was a different type of guitarist. He was very unique. He didn't pigeonhole himself in classical guitar only. He could go into jazz and tangos for the classical guitar.

Roland was a true composer, trying different genres of music as well as hammer ons, pull offs, chord harmonics and drumming.! R.I.P. Roland.
There was no one like Roland. His guitar playing was his alone and it seemed like only he could play his compositions and arrangements in the spirit that he did it.
I feel the same, I've yet to see some of his arrangements played as expressively and fluently as he did. Fuoco for a start.
@@szymonantoniak1772 I'd recommend elena papandreou, she worked closely with him and seems to be the only one to play truly to his vision

@@szymonantoniak1772 as far as Fuoco, check TH-cam for Roxane Elfaschi. She's awesome at it!!
I really enjoy Alexandra Whittingham’s performances of Tango en Skai. Super articulate and spirited.
