In 2001, I studied with Maestro Dyens at his master class in Burgundy France. That was my brag. He arranged the magic flute for 21 guitars, and we all got to perform a piece individually. He was absolutely magical. It makes me so happy that you are now introducing a true embodiment of a playing player. As in, his arrangements are fun and unique. I will never forget he emphasized having fun and being free. He would of loved your work. I know this because when you play with love, you celebrate existence at its core. You're wonderful and the rest of us who also play are wonderful. We are most fortunate to share this experience at any capacity. Much love good sir.
Roland Dyens is my favorite guitarist, I've never seen anyone else do what he has done on a classical guitar. I feel like he was the only true master of the instrument as a whole. But what blows me away ever time I listen to him is how much control he has on each voice in a piece. No matter how complexe the harmonisation, he would always make it intelligible. Every single note is played with the right intent, the right volumn, the right attack. Anyway, thank you for this tribute.
Fuckin finally I saw him once live. And my life waa never the same. From full fledged metalhead that played almost exclusively metallica riffs, to classical guitarist in the space of an hour. Mr Dyens opened my ears to a whole new world. Had the privilege of shaking his hand and exchangin a few workds after the concert...what a gentleman Thanks for the video. Cheers to all
Hey, Lucas... this is going to be a long comment. First, glad to see a new video from you. Second, so nice to find out that we share a profound admiration for Roland Dyens. I can hardly play several chords on guitar, but I love this instrument. And I had the occasion to see Roland Dyens once live, in Bucharest. I've been completely mesmerized. His Libra Sonatina is a masterpiece! I'd love to be able to play some of his more sophisticated songs.... and the news of him passing away in 2016 really made me very very sad. It was a cruelly untimely death. I can only hope that his legacy, his eclectic approach to guitar will endure. Third, it's a nice old guitar the one that you play in this video. And very funny way of inserting the microphone in the inside :) Those small holes on the front of the guitar - do they serve a purpose, or are they just part of the patina of the instrument? Keep up the good work. I'm waiting for Tango En Skay, but it's jazz. You know, 2-5-1, cause the walking bass is already there, right? :) :) :) I'm sue Roland Dyens would appreciate such a rendition!
Rolland would be proud of what you're doing! He always found new ways to play and new sounds and effects on the guitar. He once commented that in his arrangements of songs like "La Vie en Rose" he even tried to capture the breathing of the singer! Your arrangements and performances remind me very much of Roland!
I remember going to a special week for students who wanted to take extra lessons from a well respected teacher from the University level and one of the students played this piece. I became obsessed with Roland Dyens too. I'd love to see more of his repertoire played by you. Greetings from Spain.
As a french guitarist, Roland Dyens is truly one my favorite composers and has been so important in my learning of guitar. I've praticed and played some of his pieces for so long. I even had to learn Songe Capricorne for my final exam and loved it.
Saw Roland in Cordoba during a Flamenco festival. I had attended a master class along with 50 others (way above my head) at the City College in San Luis Obisbo. I'm sorry to hear of his passing
I've seen in live in Napoli some 20 years ago. A small room, intimate concert. Unforgettable experience. I'm sure he'd appreciate your arrangements, they're phenomenal!
Your pronounce is perfect, Lucas. In Brazil or Portugal. Remember this: "saudade" I'd a word that only exist in the Portuguese language. You are a natural with Portuguese, man. Congrats.
I had a few important guitar teachers in my life and Roland was my favourite as a composer. He taught me some composition too. He was awesome, and in private always ready to play and improvise in many styles. He loved jazz, he loved all Brazilian music… mentioned Egberto Gismonti as a huge influence and adored Bach. He was very fond of Sor too, and played Giuliani like a dream. His talent was limitless and he worked all the time. I miss him a lot as a friend and inspiration, he really left too soon. Your video is great and Roland would enjoy hearing you play his music. Thank you.
Dyens… his music and arrangements are perhaps the most intricate to play not only because of the high technical level required, it also demands a high level of musicianship. He indeed made use of all the expressive possibilities of the guitar. Nice video.
I recently found Roland Dyens and have become obsessed with his music. Its awesome to hear my favorite TH-cam guitarist talk about my favorite guitarist
My teacher Alexandre Bernoud was a friend of Roland Dyens, he taught us his compositions and arrangements, great pieces of music ;) happy to see you back in the game :D
Was so pleased to see you’d posted a new video. You’ve been missed maestro. Simply love your playing and videos whether serious or playful. I hope you’ll be back posting more regularly. You’re playing is a real inspiration to wannabe guitarist like me. Thanks!👍🙏🏻
Amazing Lucas, such a wonderful and touching tribute. I thoroughly enjoyed your performances here! My first exposure to Roland Dyens, was through my brother who learned that piece and performed Tango en Skai in a concert in my hometown. That was the first time I heard it and I was like what on earth was that!!! Since that time I've listened to many of his wonderful compositions, and what a unique musician Roland Dyens was. Truly a gift that keeps giving to the world, even though he's not physically with us anymore, and I definitely can hear his spirit in your playing Lucas, congratulations you're carrying on his legacy. :)
Dyens is one of the greats who sadly passed too soon. Very creative and original. Amazing arrangements (which are NOT easy to play). I'm fortunate to have seen him live in concert twice.
Wow Lucas, this was great!!! I loooved your arrangement of Nuages, wonderfully expressive in a way that is different from Django but so close to his spirit of play. And your rendition of the first piece was so varied in tone and phrase, magical! In French, saudade is pronunced « so - dad ». Very simple. Thabk you for sharing all this art with us. ❤
Welcome back. Dyens is a Giant. Thank you... I played Tango en Skai whilst my Brother and his Partner danced a Tango, I'll never forget her whirling dress and the way she choreographed her movement... All part of celebration for my Mother's second wedding. Thanks to Roland obviously.
That was brilliant, both the words you used to pay hommage to a great musician and your arrangement of _Nuages_ by Django Reinhardt. May I say that my country is very careless with its guitar magicians? We seem to lose a young and brilliant one every now and then. After Django Reinhardt and Ida Presti and Marcel Dadi and Roland Dyens, two weeks ago we lost Sylvain Luc at the age of 58. I don’t know whether you have been aware of his career, but please trust me: he is every bit just as worthy of your attention and hard work as Roland Dyens was. No need to rush, but seeing a similar video of you about him will be greatly appreciated, in due time.
Roland Dyens is my favorite guitar composer and transcribing! I owe him a huge deal of what drove me to make classical guitar one of my main goals and one of my main sources of entertainment and therapy! Thanks for making a video on him!
This is just amazing, entertaining and touching music. I can see why you fell in love with him. RIP Roland Dyens and thank you for bringing him to my life🙏
This is a beautiful homage to your hero. That's special. This is the first video of yours i found and i'm glad i did. Thanks for sharing your gift, passion and knowledge with the world
Welcome back, Lucas, and thank for your tribute to the best guitar composer, arranger, and player that I have had the pleasure to hear, and the honor to have briefly met. Your “Dynesque” version of Nuages is great and I hope you continue to keep him in your repertoire and in your listeners minds. Cheers, and happy solstice and 2024.
Calm down guy, I like you and your enthusiasm, but the best guitar composer? Federico Moreno Torroba, Agustin Barrios, Antonio Lauro,, Villalobos, Tarrega, should I keep going? Roland is fantastic, but there's no need to go over the top.
@@niceguitar6144 Your point is well taken, though none of the great composers you mention were still active when I was born (and, regrettably, I did not have the honor of meeting any of them). Perhaps I should have qualified my statement with “modern” (i.e. second half of the 20th century). His compositions for guitar were so creative - listen to the ones for on his first CD, Nuages. Sure, you left off your list Leo Brouwer. He was great (and likely influenced Roland), but I prefer Dyens style of exploratory modern composition.
No offense taken. It was a surprise meeting on an AirFrance flight. He traveled in economy class as I did. When we deplaned he was anxious about missing his connecting flight to a performance on the West coast. I helped carry his guitar and convinced an airport guard to help him through immigration. We spent a few minutes together afterwards and he kept in touch by email afterward. He was kind and in good humor even then, though I’m sure he knew the end was near. It’s a treasured memory.
amazing christmas gift for all of us , this episod is a dream , its long time fascined by you man , but this time i listen beauty of music , i wanna take my guitar and take care of this more and more . its so cool to have you , so close ! big thx , love
I love this video. It is so great to have a mentor in life, an example to emulate. And listening to your interpretation of Tango en Skai, as well as your arrangement of "Nuages," you are doing a fabulous job! :)
Great to have you back. My jaw dropped on your take of Django’s tune. Thanks for talking about mr Dyens, I feel he deserves to be much more reknowned. PS: Great format, alternating between clips, a good narrative and exquisite music !
Alltså! Du är svensk! Kul! Jag har bott i Örebro när jag var på musikhögskolan. Incredible and inspirational video, bro! Tack så jättemycket för så himla bra musik! ♥
The student surpasses the teacher. Your performance of Tango en Skai is more moving than that of Dyens. And then you top Django with a mind blowing performance of Nuages. Fantastic. Thank you.
Thank you!!! Despite being French, guitarist (untalented and unskilled though) and a jazz fan, I did not know Roland Dyens... So thanks again for this discovery and also for your outstanding performances and interpretations. We've been waiting for a little too long. I hope that your next post will not be for Christmas of 2024!
Amazing video Lucas ! I had Tango en Skai as one of the pieces for my classical guitar degree so that made the video even more interesting for me. Excellent performance on the piece btw !! EDIT : I'd love to hear you play Libra Sonatine someday as well ( I know its a pain and very long but its one if not the greatest piece Dyens ever composed) !
Thank you so much for pointing out great guitarists..while you yourself are entering or are allready playing in the same room! I love your dynamics giving depth and colour to the music...bravo!!
I will say briefly: I adore you. All your clips... You gave me so much love, pleasure and knowledge. I am really grateful to you. and may God protect you, thank you
Thanks for this video ❤ I gave my master thesis on Roland dyens life the techniques that he earned to guitar world and so.. He's gorgeous fantastic and so many things to say Rip maestro we keep alive you in our hearts ❤
Very cool! I’m not THAT familiar with Roland but had heard several of his compositions and arrangements and always thought they were unique and very interesting. Somebody who really carved his own path. Very cool to see a tribute like this on a big YT channel. Knowing your arrangements and style, it makes perfect sense that he was with a big influence.
Oh....I wouldn't have thought a second that you would do a video on him. Here in France, he is unfortunately completely unknown, and it is a shame! He is my favorite classical guitar player of the late twentieth century. Merci beaucoup pour la vidéo!

I follow, Dyans resonate with me for the same reasons: super master of the production of sound on guitar. He is very deep into his intention.
Andres Segovja would love to join the chat😉
You said it right! Dyens Über alles
His nickname was "l'horloge suisse"

The damage on the guitar gives me the brushing effect I sometimes use, so it comes in handy:) glad Roland inspired you too!! Thanks for your comment
Wow. I love Nuages and your version is stunning.
My favorite guitarist !! Still wondering if your guitar will have a second hole one day..
Lucas, this video is a treat! I love your interpretation of tango in Skai and your arrangement of Nuages is fantastic. Bravo from a French lady.
Nuages - Outstanding arrangement - I’ve listened to many in my 79 years on this earth. Bravo Lucas!

At around nine minutes you play so well with the melody / harmony.
Such a pleasure to listen you.

holy shit. That arrangement of nuages is superb. Genius. Great tribute! Mixed best of diverse worlds.

Your Nuages is Brilliant. You are so blessed. You have obviously put into the guitar many, many hours. I am blown away.
You are such a wonderful musician and human being.
Thank you for the introduction and that was a SMOKING hot take on Nuage!
Great stuff. So many techniques in one piece and you played both of them amazingly well. Love this style/sound.
So glad you’re back, Lucas! We’ve missed you!
I am going to come back and analyze your Tengo in Skai. That fast run up and how you manage it is cool. It sounded great!! Cheers!!
Époustouflant! L’arrangement de “Nuage” est incroyable et votre interprétation de Dyens est magistrale! Bravo!
Carinhoso is one of my favourite Dyens' arrangements. He loved Brazilian music.
as soon as i heard that clip of saudade no3 i had to listen to the whole thing - its beautiful thank you

Thanks Lucas for another inimitable installment of your wonderful tributes, superb playing, and dry humor.😎👍
Good too see you again🥳
Tango on Skai was incredible. Your fingers sure can fly!

I was lucky to audit a masterclass with Roland in early 2000s. Magician is truly the best descriptive for this man.

This one of the most impressive and inspiring guitarists ai have ever heard. And so humble. Wow! Thank you!
Thank you so much for pointing out great guitarists..while you yourself are entering or are allready playing in the same room! I love your dynamics giving depth and colour to the music...bravo!!
Man... those harmonics with a walking bass line blew me away... 👏 🫡
We miss you so much! welcome back!!!
Great to see you're back
So glad your backs I missed your content very much.
I will say briefly: I adore you. All your clips... You gave me so much love, pleasure and knowledge. I am really grateful to you. and may God protect you, thank you
