Round Midnight is one of my favorite songs. As a guitarist myself, I have searched all over youtube, listening to every guitarist's interpretation of this classic, that I could find. The arrangment by Dyens, played by Roman Viazovskiy is the most beautiful solo guitar version by far. The tempo, harmony, and feeling are perfect.
Another classical player who understands jazz and can play it - quite a rarity. Roman Viazovskiy is an exquisite player and seems to bring alive every era of the guitar repertoire. Fantastic performance - as usual - and a wonderful arrangement.
I was lucky enough to see Mr Dyens himself play this three or four times, and I even have a picture where I am standing next to him as he played it for a masterclass in San Francisco….
What a magnificent arrangement and performance this is. Roman's polychords are perfectly configured.and he captures the feeling of the original composer splendidly. This is a deeply thoughtful and compelling interpretation. Done with skilled attention to the "Monkish" chordal possibilities played within the guitarist's unique rhythmic approach. Monk played this song differently each time and this rendition is a highly professional and virtually flawless performance in keeping with the feeling that Monk originally put forth. I'm in complete awe of this amazing guitar arrangement and performance. . Just beautiful and so pensive!
Roman Viazovskiy not only understands jazz, he is universal. He understands whatever he plays. He is probably the best guitar player in our days. Technically and emotionally better than anybody else. I would even say better than Russell or Dylla. Very good example when expertise does not guarantee good PR.
This guy is fantastic! His touch is out of this world and he is doing it on a classical guitar! This guy has a great understanding of music and it’s different forms. Wow!
Amazing. I spent ages working this out by ear when it first came out on Roland Dyens' CD. I tracked the music down a while ago but have not had time to work with it. I will dig it out now. This film has inspired me! Thank you!
Roman , this a magnificent interpretation! Pure blues! What a magical guitarist you are ! Thanks a lot! You made my day! Are you from heaven? Awesome musician! Best regards from the Brazilian Amazon Region !!
Pfff, sin palabras, hace palidecer hasta el guitarrista de jazz más virtuoso :-O, qué dominio y que colorido le da al arreglo del inconmensurable R. Dyens.
Miguel Gistau Miguel, Baden Powell was the British founder of the Boy Scouts. Bud (Powell) was Monk's dear friend and contemporary pianist. Innocent error.
@@micaofboca Carlos is right. "Not many people know that". Baden Powell is the professional name of Baden Powell de Aquinho, whose dad was a Brasilian band-leader, and such a fan of the (Boy)-Scout movement that he gave his son those names as christian-names. This Baden Powell was a famous guitarist and composer in Brazil, composing well-known pieces with Vinicius de Moraes and others.
Damn, beautiful performance. So much feeling.

Mirrors my own experience exactly. Well noted!
This song has haunted me for 40 years. Seldom have I heard it played so well.
Does it sounds from heaven ? Surely...What a magnificent interpretation! Thanks Roman! God bless you!

Karl-Heinz Roemmich 2008, Model "Exquisit", Rio/Spruce. roemmich-guitars.com
Roman Viazovskiy thank you very much!:D
I recomend Baden Powell's version of this same tune. I guess it might have served as an inspiration for Dyens when he made this amazing arrangement!
Miguel Gistau Miguel, Baden Powell was the British founder of the Boy Scouts. Bud (Powell) was Monk's dear friend and contemporary pianist. Innocent error.
Don Lackritz no, he means baden powell of aquino; a brazilian composer who is named baden powell because of his father who was a scout lover

James Spader about 20 or so years ago.
Where can I get score to this arrangement of Monk's piece?
the book Mes Arrangements by Roland Dyens
"Time Traveler" perhaps? This is beautifully performed.
Non so se è la chitarra giusta, quella usata qui intendo.
Now you're just showing off.
I've just shat..
carbon strings, but those are nylon I think
Ahrinet'
Obviously an excellent performance... but why those overacted expressions on his face? I can't see it haha

Everything is made of carbon.
