This is the best OpenTX tutorial on Utube geared towards the true beginner! As a way of saying “thanks” for taking the time to share your knowledge and publishing this series, I have just ordered a couple of tee shirts to support your channel....it is greatly appreciated! Jim
New to OTX and finally tutorials that even I can understand. THANKS! Suggestion: Put a track time to every item in the menu. ie: 2) Create a Radio Profile......2:53, 3)Tour Software......9:00, 4) Read Models and Settings.....13:50 etc. Almost as good as snippets. :) I take a quick screenshot of your menus now and add the times as above so that I can come back and get right to the part that I want to watch again.
I don’t know what you do in your “real” life, but you should be an instructor/educator in whatever field you are in. Cadence, explanations, suggestions, articulation....excellent!
Thank you George. I'm not a teacher professionally, but I have 5 kids so I've been teaching all my life. Appreciate the kind words. Thanks for watching, J
RC Video Reviews Maybe selfish since I really needed this series but I would like to see you develop the subject further. One problem I have is someone does one or two videos on a topic and then it may be months, if at all, that they develop it further. It’s especially difficult for those that need that “_____For Beginners” and then are left knowing little more than the intro video. NO-ONE has done a good and modestly complete series on OpenTx. They do something on mixes or custom screen and the go on to product reviews or a 6 month build series. That leaves a lot of folks having to search for the pieces.
I have 10 videos in the playlist so far: th-cam.com/play/PLy3TC1ILJYTjqDXFB84oXVWZG14zyMYYt.html What other topics would you find useful? I already plan on doing a video on Logical Switches and I have something in mind for logging and using the radio as a flight data recorder (blackbox). I totally understand your point about picking up a series to have it go flat after just a few videos. 100% get that.
RC Video Reviews I am just getting started in your playlist. Didn’t know about your channel until a week ago. You are doing great! I’ll leave a comment after I’ve seen all of them. I’ve been in RC for 40+ years but this is my first time attempting OpenTx. Step learning curve. But your videos are the next best thing to classroom instruction. Excellent!!
@@RCVideoReviews You are asking for some other usefull videos. Here my Proposal: Connect the Radio with a Flight SIM like RC7 or similar and demonstrate that all the Switches will work on the SIM as well. The plane standing on the runway will show the rates as well as its behavior in the flight. That's great. People would love to check the programming not just in the Companion Sim but on a real RC SIM as well. I know that already delivered the vid from the Everest excurse but not sure if you demonstrated the rates and stuff.... just an idea. All the best from Germany
I have to say that this is the sickest radio I have ever seen. I cannot believe all the functions it preforms. I saw it about a year ago and saw $200. I thought to myself this has to be crap. I have always been a Spektrum user. But for Spektrum to make an equivalent radio it would be over $1000. My friend talked me into it, and I'm loving it. But I think I would be lost without your well made and informative videos. I plan on watch all of them. Excellent work my friend. *****
Just watched this video whilst connected to the TX16S. I took a while, but it has started to sink in, thank you very much. It would have taken me a long time floundering with the options to configure the basic set up. I now have two way connection between my radio and PC, great!
I just watched the first video in this series and am totally awed by the amount of knowledge shared. Thank you so much. Looking forward to learn more on my FPV journey.
Welcome to the channel. Thanks for checking-in. I appreciate your feedback and will continue to work on these OpenTx tutorial videos--they seem to be well liked. Good to meet you, J
WOW! Thank you so much for this video! I just picked up my TX16S last week, and been dying to get my hands on it! Hence, this software will certainly come in handy and seems pretty full-proof! Thank you!
You're welcome. You should watch the Global Functions video too. In the event you want an audio track assigned to a switch for every model, you can do that in Global Functions. th-cam.com/video/gmM033r8qIQ/w-d-xo.html
I have to fully aggree to what Jim Snodgrass wrote - this is up there among the best, just as JB and the few others. Thank you for making my transition from Spektrum radios to OpenTX and specifically to the newly purchased Radiomaster TX16S so easy. I think I heard in one of your tutorials that you do not fly helicopters. Are you planning on creating a tutorial for how to set-up swash mix etc. anyway in due course? I'd certainly be delighted. Cordial greetings and thanks again from one of your latest subscribers in Europe.
I appreciate the comment. Unfortunately I know zero about RC helos so I'm afraid I wouldn't be much practical help on that front. In any case, I'm glad the videos have helped you out. J
Great video my first radio was the jumper t16 got corrupt files and I think I did that when I did not know better . And now that I have the radiomaster I'm very careful not to screw things over lol thank u for this type of video.
I've just purchased my Radiomaster TX16s. I was wondering if I need to use a setup guide for setting up my radio or just go by your tutorials starting out with this open tx video here. Please advise. Thanks.
First of all I really appreciate your efforts for these series. I am new to this hobby and I just recently got my tx16s and these video series are really helpful to me, it's much easier now for me to understand and setup the OpenTx radio. But I had a question, if I want to use the OpenTx companion on the second computer(where I have never installed the OpenTx companion ever), then do I have to create again new radio profile or is there any other way to do it like backup or anything?
That's a great question and there probably is a radio profile file somewhere, but I've never looked at it. And I do use Companion on two different computers. So I'll poke around and see if I can find a profile file we can use to keep things sync'd up. On that note, I do use a shared file location for all of my radio files, so that way I can open my radio files from any computer. Thanks for the comments on the video series, enjoy them! J
@@RCVideoReviews If possible then please make a video. Everyone is showing how to transfer models from one radio to other but I am not able to find any video showing how to backup to use open tx companion on other computer.
Excellent videos. You obviously put a great deal of work into this. I'm currently watching your video on how to use OpenTx Companion. I was with you all the way, but I lost you on creating a local folder for sync purposes. How do I do that?
i know this was 2 years ago but my screen on my tx just says USB really big with an icon. i cannot maneuver like you can. is that a setting? how can i do this?
@@RCVideoReviews im sorry im not sure what that means. I'm aware that opentx and edgetx are very similar. but how did you get it to unlock you phone while plugged in?
Great instruction. Suggestion; when showing the companion screen, could you make it full size, rather than a window. I found it hard to read the items you were clicking on my 13' Macbook Pro, and also follow your mouse. I had to re-run several sections in order to see your mouse movements and where you clicked. Otherwise, I thank you for the help you gave this particular Newby!
I see you connect, disconnect and reconnect the radio without getting the 3 choice (joystick, usb, etc) drop down menu. I can’t do that, nor will my companion read or update from any buttons on left - claims no usb connection or no drivers (what drivers?) even though I was able to backup the settings to the file created as you described. I spent over 5 hrs downloading software of all kinds intended to fix these things (like control line to allow Brewer to get uf-dtl or whatever) on 4 different machines (Mac and PC) including one PC which is only a week old. All failed one way or another. The only way I could update to 9.2 was to use the bootloader method. What is wrong? I am so frustrated.
No. Each radio MPM has a unique global id generated by the software. NOW: If you want to compile your own MPM Firmware (and I have a video on how to do that) th-cam.com/video/QaEbn9R6QGc/w-d-xo.html You can set your OWN Global ID and if you use that firmware on two radios, then the answer is YES. But you have to be willing to compile your own firmware.
hi...do you have any clues what to do when i get error message "Can't extract RADIO/radio.bin" ? you video is very simple and great ...but i can not connect like you do
Nice video! Quick question? My Left stick (Mode 2) is off center to the right. Not by much, but I can see it for sure. This was not an issue at all since calibrating worked great, however, after using the radio with a Flight Sim, the Sim told me that Channel 4 is off center??? Is there a way to center the stick using some "Gimbal Adjustments" in the inside??? Thanks.
I replied to this earlier. Don't know where it went. If you have a sprung stick physically off, you have a hardware issue that should be sorted out. All spring loaded sticks should center.
Hi, I'm totally new to all these and just ordered the tx16s to practice in simulator before getting an actual drone. Do I just follow your tutorial according to the number or are the videos not in any particular order?
In the beginner series it would be a good idea to watch the first three or four in order. After that, it's more about picking the subject you need to learn. In the Intermediate/Advanced series there is no intended order although later videos might reference earlier videos.
How do you open the software without going through a pop up screen (start up options)prompting me for stuff I don't know ? It prompts for radio profile but doesn't allow my to type or choose anything Prompts then for radio type..I'm able to choose my radio Prompts for data file...that's filled in automatically with my radio Prompts for data folder...idk what it's really asking for here Lastly Prompts SD image path.. Again idk what it wants here either. I know this old but I can't even open opentx companion without making it through this
You certainly have a great series of videos. learning heaps. One question if I may. You show having your radio plugged into your computer with a model displayed and selecting; "Read Models and Settings from Radio". I can't get that to work for me. I turn my TX16s On, connect to my laptop, get the musical sound but when I select "Read Models etc I get a msg "Unable To Find Radio SD Card". I've gone over several of your videos looking for where I've gone wrong but so far no luck. Any chance you can point me in the right direction. Would appreciate some help. Regards. Bruce. {NZ}
It sounds like your card is not actually getting mounted by the operating system. Can you navigate the SD card after you plug it in with your file browser? If you can't, Companion can't see it.
@@RCVideoReviews Thanks for your reply. There's not a lot of local support here in New Zealand. Everything else appears to work correctly. Turn On TX16s, connect USB, three options appear, select USB Storage {SD}, get musical sound and the two screens for the SD card appear. However when you open Models, non of the models in the radio are on the SD card. Just shows a list of model numbers from 1 to 36. The only thing I can get showing on my TX16s screen during all this is the USB icon. Regards.
Hi John, I have a small question. When my throttle kill is on, my channel one stays at 0, but I get the "speed" track anyway when I go over 80%... Any Idea why this happens? I would think it only plays the "speed track" if the throttle kill is switched off....
@@RCVideoReviews Thanks for that info but what do you mean with my speed track exactly? The widget is showing channel 1 I think, it's not going up when kill switch is activated. But the L06, which is based on the CH1 gets activated anyway. What am I missing here? This is not easy! :p
@@RCVideoReviews Hi John, I think I figured it out. In order for the "speed" sound not to work when the throttle cut is on, I had to change the "switch setting" of my throttle input channel to logical switch L02. L02 is the sticky function of the throttle cut designed by you (on 3aug2020)
What is the purpose of selecting a default channel order in the settings / radio profile window given that channel order is ultimately selectable in the output window ? I'm assuming it is because you have to start somewhere and preferences vary , but there is no "right" way . Your videos on OpenTx are the best by a wide margin .
That's exactly the thing--you have to start somewhere. OpenTx doesn't care about things like an "aileron" channel. But since most people have a preference on where to start, when you select channel order at the bottom, it will put your inputs and mixes in that order when you create a new model. If you change the order option and create a new model, it will put your inputs and mixes in the new order you specified. You can move them however you want though. OpenTx only puts names on mix lines for humans. Just remember - Input is hardware (stick, knob, switch). We define those so we can modify them collectively. Mixes assign those inputs to a pin on your receiver. Outputs center (subtrim), govern (min/max range), set the direction, then send the signal for RF transmission. OpenTx does not care what "names" we use for all of that. You can put ANY control on ANY channel. If you have a receiver that wants to see Ailerons on Channel 3 and want to bypass that. There is an option under the bind option that says "Ignore Channel Map" Just put a check in that.
@@RCVideoReviews This is the first time I have seen a full explanation like this. As somebody said previously , you have a special talent for teaching. We are the beneficiaries . Awesome.
@@dthillafap In my best Elvis voice: "Thank you, Thank you very much...I'm here all week. Tell your friends" :) Seriously though, OpenTx can be like grabbing a tiger by the tail when you first start, but after you tame it, you've got yourself a TIGER! So glad these videos are helping.
Hello, when plugging the USB cable from the PC into the radio, does the radio have to be in bootloader mode first or simply just be turned on and onceplugged in then 'USB Storage (SD)' selected? Thx
Hi, I have a question. When I plug in USB to my radio it asks: Joystick, Storage, Serial. I assumed Storage... then I get two drive instances on my PC: RM TX16S (E:) and USB Drive (D:). The latter contains many folders (Firmware etc.) Your example only had one drive instance. Do you know why my radio declares an E: drive with a .bin and .txt ? I assume that I should select the D: for Open TX (SD structure path). Does that sound correct? Thanks much!
EdgeTX dropped the two drive thing not too long ago. That's a leftover from OpenTX. Use the drive with the folder structure: MODELS, SOUNDS, TOOLS etc...
Hey Hi RCVR I did get me two whippets sorted out and my controller thanks to watching many of your videos I do have one question but will ask that after I discribe my set up: The Glider's UMX Whippets have only two control surfaces, Rudder and Elevator, I intend to fly them both off dunes/slopes and on flat ground useing a DLG launch. I have the rudder and elevator on one stick the right hand stick. I managed to make that happen in the mixer after several attempts I found that my Spektrum Orginal RX in one had different channels for rudder and elevator to the one that I reworked with a micro rx even though they are both DSM my problem is I have in the input a line for Elv & Rudder for both LauMod full right rudder trim & full down elevator trim are set in the Flight Mode 1 for this and TherMod Flight Mode 2 all at zero also I have a rates set in these lines in input anyway the Question is: When I deploy the switch for launch mode the rudder and elevator hardly move at all from the trim input, the sticks are ok and rates as they shouId be, I have controls working correctly on both models and their rates are also reduced as per any clues you are able to give if possible I shall continue to watch your videos over and over as my set ups are heath robbinson to say the least! Thanks
In the model setup page go down to Trim Step. What does that say? If your trim is actuating when you flip into a flight mode, it's probably because you have fine trim step enabled. Make it medium or coarse.
@@RCVideoReviews Good advice but still only very slight deflection but then its all I need now its on coarse but hopefully will be enough works on both set ups I see many other settings for trim as well extra fine must be like one notch on the motor in the servo as coarse is so small hope you get to try the same thing out one time.
@@BrianRamseysg01 Ok, if you have the trim set to medium or coarse and it's still not giving you enough, remove the trim adjustment, go into Special Functions and make a channel override using the same switch you use for your flight mode/launch mode. i.e. If you use SC down for Launch Mode, make a special function that says: SC down Override Channel x Value y ON x=Channel you want deflected for launch mode. y=Deflection amount you want
@@RCVideoReviews Thank you I shall try that lateron today sounds like a proper way to go! The more I can learn on these simple models will definately help in future builds.
I don't know how I stumbled across your video but boy RC transmitters have gotten fancy since I've used my first one back in 1974. I built it from a kit from a company called Heathkit. Had a gas powered car. Then I went to a helicopter which was 4 channel but nothing this fancy. I am out of touch with what's out there now
Everything is a struggle, until it isn't. lol Trying to set up an Eflight Extra 300 and the throws were all screwed up and the throttle begins at mid-stick. Used the "compare model function" to chase down the differences between the two. Great feature for noobs.
OK, I'm sitting here going thru this video and my RadioMaster TX16S has started beeping & brightening the screen for 0.5 seconds every 5 seconds or so. I moved the left stick and it stopped. What's that all about??
I was not able to fine the Companion for the firmware level that I'm running 2.3.10 The webpage seem to have change since you may your video. I was unable to fine the link at the bottom of the page, where you did, can you help? your video are very useful.
Without the transmitter but with the the SD card from Open TX 2.3.10 building the program and testing in the simulator. Only I try to set my virtual Radiomaster TX 16S from top to bottom and also the screen. Color, widgets, timer etc. After all settings are OK and leaving the simulator and start the simulator again all settings are lost and I have the blue screen again. Changing Theme contents (blue) won’t help. Is there a memory possiblilty?
The only option I'm aware of is to set those parameters in the radio and read the model into Companion. When you do that, those items stay changed. Otherwise, the software behaves as you've described it.
Hello: the problem I have is i can follow right to the point where you say “I’ve already got mine on here” and i cant see where or how you already got it there. Then you say make this folder and that folder and then I ‘m totally behind and cant catch up. Ive rewound it 4 times and cant see where it is. This basic simple computereze, but i havent done a lot of so it stops me from continuing on with the setup. I’m with you until you plug your radio in. Mine beeps and i know im connected, but where it shows up and location is a mystery. :-(( john
Is it absolutely necessary to unplug before companion changes are mirrored on the radio? Seems like there should be another less-port-destructive method, seeing as the changes are already synced, just not apparent in the UI. @16:44
When you have the radio plugged in, the radio umounts the SD card and the PC mounts it. So the radio goes into this "frozen in the headlights" status. Try it--when it's plugged in, press some buttons--it shouldn't react to button presses. When you write data from Companion to the radio SD card, the radio can't see what you did until the PC unmounts the SD card enabling the radio to mount it. When the radio mounts the card, it rescans the models/settings and refreshes whatever changes you made to the currently selected model. So in short, yup, you have to unplug to see changes on the radio. You "might" be able to eject the SD card from the OS and see if that triggers a remount on the radio, but I haven't tried that.
@@RCVideoReviews So the radio really does act like more of a standard computer than I assumed. Running Fedora Linux, and being a programmer myself, this unmount/remount logic makes sense, but I guess I was hoping for magic. I'll just make sure to unplug/replug on the computer-side of the USB cable to preserve the radio's USB port (as I've had phones' USB ports die from regular use, so I'm wary). Thanks!
@@JasonFarrell Yeah, simultaneous r/w to a single filesystem generally doesn't work out well. I suppose they could get into file locking, but that would detract from time spent adding radios etc... Good idea on plug/unplug from PC side. I use a hub for most of my connectivity--disposable.
Thank You for such an great tutorial , ! I've downloaded Open TX Companion for my RM TX16S ( Mac Version) done all the settings as suggested but my Radio is not found when I click on the "Read Model and settings from Radio Icon. Would this be due to the path chosen in SD Structure Path ? I currently have /Volumes /OpenTX Companion , its the only path I can find logically when I click on the "Select Folder" Tab . I 've done some searching and others have said that it could be the lead too however I can see the USB symbal on my Radio screen when connected. If anyone could chime in that uses a Mac desktop that would be great !
It probably means your SD card isn't getting mounted when you connect it to your computer. Make sure you connect via the top port, and you should be prompted for joystick or sd card, chose sd card. You should also be able to see your sd card contents in finder.
@@RCVideoReviews hello, thanks for your prompt reply !, Top plug is used and we are getting the prompt and have been choosing SD card, also checked in Finder for the contents of the card but nothing is found. Any other ideas sir ?
@@salvagedflora If you cannot see the SD Card folder including the IMAGES SOUNDS THEMES MODELS and RADIO folders, Companion will not work. The SD card should automatically be mounted on Macs. You'll need to work that out first. I don't know why it's not working--it should.
@@RCVideoReviews Hello, thank you so much for getting back to me, we worked out that when clicking either joystick or read sd card our colours were inverted and we were in fact clicking on joystick, all working fine now :)

I can't write to the radio... Companion says it writes, companion can see it on the radio but on the radio itself there is no change...so a new model written is invisible... WTF is going on?
Dear John, please help. I just bought a RADIO MASTER TX16S, the installed firmware is version 2.3.11 I opened OpenTx companion and clicked on the 2.3.11 version, it downloads fine. When I launch it I get two notifications pop up. First one is" Companion update check failed, new version information not found" the second one says "firmware update check failed, new version information not found or invalid". I see on the TX Companion website in "Windows Companion downloads issues"that there is a fix for the bug for the 2.3.14 version, and older versions, but they need to be downloaded manually, which I did, but I keep getting the same 2 notices every time. Does this mean I can't use the 2.3.11 companion, or will I just ignore the notices and just work away. l downloaded version 2.3.14 and It seems to be fine. Thanks John
I had a problem trying to install Companion 2.3.10. After downloading the app and executing it I got a pop up that said it could not be loaded on my pc. I was using Firefox browser, so I tried Chrome and the executable worked FYI Thanks for the in finding Companion
When I go to READ models and settings I get an error that reads; Can't extract Radio/radio.bin The Radiomaster TX16S II has a fresh install of firmware from Radiomaster, radio has no issues. Please advise. Thank you.
You don't say if you're on EdgeTX or OpenTX or what version of the firmware or what version of Companion you're using. It sounds to me like you're using EdgeTX 2.6 or later and OpenTX or EdgeTX Companion pre 2.6. OpenTX companion won't be able to read EdgeTX 2.6 or later.

Cannot get Companion to "see" my newTX16S Max. At 4:06 all that is is listed is C: in Companion on my PC, nor can the radio be found in "Computer" on my PC. Radio is on and connected via the respective (at the top of the radio) USB ports, when asked joystick or storage on the radio I select storage. Tried a 2nd cable already. Using Widows 7 which recognizes all the devices I've ever connected to it via USB except my TX16S. Sure could use some help here. The only online manual I can find is written in Taranis-ese, which just confuses things for me. I've used er9x for years and could always manage to figure my way through it with the online aids available, but I'm a bit confounded in this environment and have yet to get a model working with it.
I would try yet a third cable and probably a different PC. You've done most of the things that solve this type of issue. In system settings you could set it to always use SD card just to eliminate the possibility you're actually hitting joystick mode. Another option is to upgrade the firmware to the latest. - Take the SD Card out of the radio, put it in a reader - Download the latest firmware, save to SD Card FIRMWARE folder. Put it back in radio. - Press T4 and T1 INBOARD and then power on the radio. The goal is start in the bootloader mode. - Click Write Firmware, select the firmware you just copied to the FIRMWARE folder. Long press to flash it. - You will have to update your SD card contents after updating the firmware. SD card contents can be found on the OpenTX firmware download page. Some time ago there was an issue about USB IDs in Windows that they solved somewhere around 2.3.10 with a unique USB identifier.
@@RCVideoReviews Firmware version is 2.3.9-otx(60e1edc1) dated 2020-06-14. USB Mode options are: Ask, Joystick, Storage, Serial. Serial is not shown in your vid using the same firmware; any harm in trying it?
@@RCVideoReviews Don't have an SD card reader. Tried with a Windows 10 computer, same result. John just one more question please, if I've down loaded companion 2.3.14 version to my computer, and if my tx is version 2.3.11 will it be compatible.. I think I remember you saying once they both have to be the same version .. (forgive me if I'm wrong) I'm new to open tx.
Companion is probably backwards compatible on OpenTx. It definitely creates issues on EdgeTX mainly because they changed model file formats from .bin to .yaml. Is there any reason to not sync Companion with the version of OpenTX you're running? It's not hard to keep them in-sync.

Man, I tell you if I'd know open tx would cause this amount of grief I'd have stuck with my HITEC aurora 9🤣, so john Can I use 2.3.14 on 2.3.9 or do I need to upgrade to 2.3.12 first, then 2.3.13, then eventually 2.3.14
Great video! I have an issue though. When I tried to sync my SD card from the radio to the sync file it only transferred 4 items and nothing else. The items were just like a batch file of some sort and a text file I think. I tried it a few times and it never worked so I thought well ill just copy and past from the actual card to the file and they did go obviously but its like companion or whatever doesnt recognize them in there or something. Any ideas?
Appreciate the reply. I figured it out. As per usual it was user error. I was selecting the drive that the radio was showing in but the the actual sd card was showing in a completely different drive. So when i realized that it worked. Thx again though. I will sub!
Hi! thanks for the awesome videos. But I messed something up while updating the opentx firmware. somehow half of the menu icons and stock images are gone from my tx. I have a couple icons, and despite no icon image, I still have the names of the menu position that I am in at any given time. Or another example would be that during a basic configuration I can do the entire configuration and complete it but the image of the gimbals arent showing anymore. In conclusion, can anyone help me figure this out without me ruining my tx??
It seems like your sd card contents are fouled up. I would go download a new sd card contents from OpenTx, unpack and copy to your sd card. That should get you working again.

You can always get the latest Companion. It will prompt you to download the latest firmware, but you don't have to do it. And you can tell Companion to skip any given update.
@@RCVideoReviews thanks also wondering about the SD card structure path. Do you plug in your radio, turn it on and select SD card on the radio or do you first load an SD card into your computer? @@alvandergoot7237 There's no case where you should have to take the SD card out of the radio. The radio acts as a great big USB thumb drive. So treat it that way. When you plug it in, select SD CARD and you can read/write to the card just as if you plugged the card directly into an onboard reader.

Before you do, make sure you have the System option set to ASK for USB Connection. And make sure you click on SD Card. One other thing: If you have access to Mac or Linux, try on one of those.
i think you have the SD structure instructions wrong... thats the location on your hard drive you back up your sd card contents not the tx SD card location... ... The SD card Sync prepopulates that folder name you put in the SD Structure folder entry. .... when you did an SD card sync it prepopped with your E drive.
Hello I am a new on this. I did not buy the radio yet. but I am going to buy it. I just hope i can get some help when I need it. I like you Video so much, My Name is Robert Wioch I live in Texas close bye Waco. I am so glad I SUBSCRIBED TO YOUR CHANNEL. I do not know any thing about this Radio at all. I want to buy it but were do I buy it?? Thanks for your help. good night. 11:32pm
Hi Robert, Welcome to the channel. I have a playlist for beginners here: th-cam.com/play/PLy3TC1ILJYTjqDXFB84oXVWZG14zyMYYt.html That playlist covers a wide range of topics at the beginner level. Here are a couple of affiliate links to buy the radio: ► Radiomaster TX16s www.banggood.com/custlink/KvmEZEe4bl ► Radiomaster Max Edition www.banggood.com/custlink/D3DRP8WNrZ
This is for beginners ?? I had no idea when I thought about getting into flying model airplanes, that I’d need to be a software engineer too. I’m sorry but all this kinda takes some of the shine off of the hobby, for me anyway. Thanks for all the info, but I’m gonna have to watch this in super short snips to follow WTH you’re doing.
Peter, I agree. After I made this video I realized what happened and adjusted my process. This method of video production was new to me then. It gets better--I promise. ;) For what it's worth, it looked GREAT to me sitting one foot away from the editing screen. Different story on a TV or smaller laptop screen though.
How can this be for beginners when half of your stuff is already downloaded and setup it does not work like that when you download it with nothing on your computer and half of what you are doing in this video isn’t explained like how and where to save backup files I have watched this whole series 3 times and granted probably the best content out there but for someone never having used something like this seems like a lot is skipped over
Half of what stuff is already downloaded? This particular video literally shows you how to google for opentx companion, download it, and install it with no assumption about what you already have or don't have on your computer. th-cam.com/video/ye9Yaj_jUA8/w-d-xo.html There are also 7 steps demonstrated in this video showing exactly how to configure and use the software. 1) Download and Install Companion 2) Create a Radio Profile 3) Tour of the Software and Its Settings 4) Read Models and Settings from the Radio 5) Editing a Model 6) Running a Simulation 7) Writing Models and Settings to the Radio If you have a specific question you should try asking it.
@@RCVideoReviews didn’t mean to come off like an ass lol I was referring to your other videos that aren’t exactly easy to find I did answer most of my questions with you videos guess I’m saying like a couple times you mentioned already making a video on something but there was no link to that video in the description just had to sort through stuff otherwise great content subed with a 🔔 on my end thanks for the education and keep it up
Also not all you tubers are on top of there comments like you which is why I usually don’t bother asking but mad props for your attention to your comments we appreciate it and I will definitely ask next time thanks
@@skyguy5605 OpenTx is a complicated topic with a great deal of interdependencies. And it is very difficult to make videos short enough to watch, and long enough to be meaningful. I've done three things to address these issues: 1) I've separated out the material into beginner, and intermediate/advanced playlists. I make fewer assumptions in the beginner material and I make more assumptions in the intermediate/advanced materia. I've tried to arrange the beginner playlist in an order that will let you start at the top and work your way down to accumulate what you need to know as you progress. 2) I've started publishing OpenTx Snippets which are intended to be very small bite-sized bits of information that will let you spend time doing on a very specific task. If you do enough of these snippets you wil gradually start to get the hang of things. 3) I've started to Livestream OpenTx classes. I just published the 2nd one which will be Tuesday at 1300et. The idea behind these is to cover a single subject in detail and let live participants ask questions in a live session in the event I don't cover something that should be covered. Hope that helps...
Thanks for keeping this tutorial simple for new cats like me.
No problem. I'm here to help!
This is the best OpenTX tutorial on Utube geared towards the true beginner! As a way of saying “thanks” for taking the time to share your knowledge and publishing this series, I have just ordered a couple of tee shirts to support your channel....it is greatly appreciated! Jim
Wow, thanks! Appreciate the support. Thank you.
Thanks for watching,

I have 10 videos in the playlist so far:
th-cam.com/play/PLy3TC1ILJYTjqDXFB84oXVWZG14zyMYYt.html
What other topics would you find useful?
Glad you found the channel. Good luck with your radio.
Just watched this video whilst connected to the TX16S. I took a while, but it has started to sink in, thank you very much. It would have taken me a long time floundering with the options to configure the basic set up. I now have two way connection between my radio and PC, great!
Great to hear!
Your work on the TX16S is impressive, up there with the best of them. Keep it up!!!
Glad you like them! Appreciate the comment. Thank you.

I just watched the first video in this series and am totally awed by the amount of knowledge shared. Thank you so much. Looking forward to learn more on my FPV journey.

Greetings from Indian subscriber.. Your tutorials are excellent, please keep them coming.
Welcome to the channel. Thanks for checking-in. I appreciate your feedback and will continue to work on these OpenTx tutorial videos--they seem to be well liked.
Good to meet you,

WOW! Thank you so much for this video! I just picked up my TX16S last week, and been dying to get my hands on it! Hence, this software will certainly come in handy and seems pretty full-proof! Thank you!
Best of luck with your new radio. I have lots of material for reference. Have at it!

Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the kind comments and welcome to the channel.
Wow this video is priceless. Excellent ! Thank You !!
You’re welcome.
thankyou, really needed the start to understand the pathway to allocate speech phrase to a mode switch allocation on my TX16S
You're welcome. You should watch the Global Functions video too. In the event you want an audio track assigned to a switch for every model, you can do that in Global Functions. th-cam.com/video/gmM033r8qIQ/w-d-xo.html
Hi! Very good Information on the radio. This is Robert Wioch. I will give you always a Thumps up. you are the best out there. AAAAAAAAAA++++++++++ :))
Thanks again!

Glad I found this. The thing has been a brick on the table
I like the out takes at the end. Funny
You get a gold star for watching all the way to the end. Thanks for that...
Great video my first radio was the jumper t16 got corrupt files and I think I did that when I did not know better . And now that I have the radiomaster I'm very careful not to screw things over lol thank u for this type of video.

Hello! Welcome to the channel. Glad you're finding the videos useful. Greetings from Florida USA.
I've just purchased my Radiomaster TX16s. I was wondering if I need to use a setup guide for setting up my radio or just go by your tutorials starting out with this open tx video here. Please advise. Thanks.

Great video, answered so many questions.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thanks for the tutorial man. I have a qx7 though I hope these applies to that radio as well?
Absolutely it will. OpenTx is OpenTx--there might be some minor hardware nuances but the concepts apply across all OpenTx designs.
Very informative video.. hope you will create video on how to setup Yaapu mapping widget soon.. keep up the good work!
Thanks for watching. Appreciate the comment.
Should have seen this a few hours ago. Before connecting to companion and by mistake deleting all my manually entered models and settings😓
Oooph. Ya, that's rough.
Good news. You can disregard my request. I had a brief moment of intelligence and rewound your video.
Good work :)
i know this was 2 years ago but my screen on my tx just says USB really big with an icon. i cannot maneuver like you can. is that a setting? how can i do this?
OpenTX != EdgeTX
I’ve made several changes to the format in subsequent releases of these videos. I think if you keep watching you’ll see the changes.
I too found the Companion screen difficult to read
You made my Day...!
Awesome! :)
Thanks for sharing.
These are very useful videos👍.
My pleasure 😊
Great videos dude. question: if you copy a model from one radio to another so you have redundant radio's do the models bind in the second radio?
@@RCVideoReviews Ug, ok thanks a lot.
hi...do you have any clues what to do when i get error message "Can't extract RADIO/radio.bin" ? you video is very simple and great ...but i can not connect like you do
😁Fantastic video Thank you 👍
You’re welcome!
Hi...
What do I choose in edit settings / radio profile?
radiomaster tx16s I use only for helicopters
thank you for the advice and the video
I don't fly helicopters, so I'm not really a good source to help you with a radio configuration. Sorry.
Well done lessons.. thanks.
You are welcome!
@@RCVideoReviews got it, thanks. Your video are really newbies friendly
How do you open the software without going through a pop up screen (start up options)prompting me for stuff I don't know ?
It prompts for radio profile but doesn't allow my to type or choose anything
Prompts then for radio type..I'm able to choose my radio
Prompts for data file...that's filled in automatically with my radio
Prompts for data folder...idk what it's really asking for here
Lastly Prompts SD image path..
Again idk what it wants here either.
I know this old but I can't even open opentx companion without making it through this

You certainly have a great series of videos. learning heaps. One question if I may. You show having your radio plugged into your computer with a model displayed and selecting; "Read Models and Settings from Radio". I can't get that to work for me. I turn my TX16s On, connect to my laptop, get the musical sound but when I select "Read Models etc I get a msg "Unable To Find Radio SD Card". I've gone over several of your videos looking for where I've gone wrong but so far no luck. Any chance you can point me in the right direction. Would appreciate some help. Regards. Bruce. {NZ}
Regards.
Are you using a color radio or black and white radio?
@@RCVideoReviews I’m using the same TX16s as you used in your videos with Edge TX and colour touch screen.
Hi John, I have a small question. When my throttle kill is on, my channel one stays at 0, but I get the "speed" track anyway when I go over 80%... Any Idea why this happens? I would think it only plays the "speed track" if the throttle kill is switched off....
Your speed track and channel one need to track the same source. Something is different.
Tell your friends" :)
Seriously though, OpenTx can be like grabbing a tiger by the tail when you first start, but after you tame it, you've got yourself a TIGER! So glad these videos are helping.
Hello, when plugging the USB cable from the PC into the radio, does the radio have to be in bootloader mode first or simply just be turned on and onceplugged in then 'USB Storage (SD)' selected? Thx
To access the sd card it should be on. Then press sd card when prompted. I’ve never tried accessing it with the radio off.
@@RCVideoReviews Thanks
@@BrianRamseysg01 Ok, if you have the trim set to medium or coarse and it's still not giving you enough, remove the trim adjustment, go into Special Functions and make a channel override using the same switch you use for your flight mode/launch mode.
i.e. If you use SC down for Launch Mode, make a special function that says:
SC down Override Channel x Value y ON
x=Channel you want deflected for launch mode.
y=Deflection amount you want

I am out of touch with what's out there now
Yes they have, but there's also a whole lot of readily available help on TH-cam too.
Is your battery charged?
Reboot the radio? It's trying to tell you something.
I was not able to fine the Companion for the firmware level that I'm running 2.3.10 The webpage seem to have change since you may your video. I was unable to fine the link at the bottom of the page, where you did, can you help? your video are very useful.
Here: www.open-tx.org/2020/10/06/opentx-2.3.10
Question if radio has opentx 2.3.9. Which companion should be installed (laptop running windows 8.1 64bit)?
Any 2.3.9+ Companion will do.
Hello: the problem I have is i can follow right to the point where you say “I’ve already got mine on here” and i cant see where or how you already got it there. Mine beeps and i know im connected, but where it shows up and location is a mystery. :-(( john
What time index are you getting lost?
I'm sorry not seeing your video on firmware for radiomaster tx16s.
Do you have a video on seting up same radio for realflight 9.5?
I do not.
@@RCVideoReviews what's your experience with customer service, I just had an issue with mine and I have only had it a week?
can I change a mode 1 to mode 2 as there is a £30 price difference between the modes
I use a hub for most of my connectivity--disposable.
very much appreciated !!!!!
Any time!

Help alot thanks for sharing👍 liked
Glad to help.
I forgot to mention. Twice now my radio froze and went into "emergency mode". What's that about? I would not want it to happen while I'm flying. I have reached out to Radiomaster support.
Radiomaster is probably your best option for support. You may want to try upgrading your firmware to the latest.
I can't write to the radio... Companion says it writes, companion can see it on the radio but on the radio itself there is no change...so a new model written is invisible... WTF is going on?
Dear John, please help. I just bought a RADIO MASTER TX16S, the installed firmware is version 2.3.11
I opened OpenTx companion and clicked on the 2.3.11 version, it downloads fine. Thanks John
You can just flash the 2.3.14 version manually. I don't know why Companion is failing to reach the update server.
@@RCVideoReviews thank you john for your reply..kind regards from Ireland.
I had a problem trying to install Companion 2.3.10. After downloading the app and executing it I got a pop up that said it could not be loaded on my pc. I was using Firefox browser, so I tried Chrome and the executable worked FYI Thanks for the in finding Companion
Glad you got it working.
@@RCVideoReviews Think I found problem sir. Edge Companion v2.8.0 SD Firmware from Radiomaster site v2.7.0 Thanks for quick response. I might use your Discord chat channel if I run into further issues. Much appreciated. Barrett
- Take the SD Card out of the radio, put it in a reader
- Download the latest firmware, save to SD Card FIRMWARE folder.
Storage is the option you want. 2.3.13 is the latest I think.
@@RCVideoReviews Found this, haven't gotten into it yet, but could be relevant. Thanks for your help with some possible solutions to try.
@@RCVideoReviews Don't have an SD card reader. Tried with a Windows 10 computer, same result. Radio is new, just trying to get a model setup and the outputs from the receiver don't match the outputs shown in the transmitter. I don't need to transfer, or save any data. Can a factory reset be done from the radio without Companion?
John just one more question please, if I've down loaded companion 2.3.14 version to my computer, and if my tx is version 2.3.11 will it be compatible.. I think I remember you saying once they both have to be the same version .. (forgive me if I'm wrong) I'm new to open tx.
Companion is probably backwards compatible on OpenTx. It definitely creates issues on EdgeTX mainly because they changed model file formats from .bin to .yaml.
Is there any reason to not sync Companion with the version of OpenTX you're running? It's not hard to keep them in-sync.
@@RCVideoReviews I'm just new to it all john, even the tech language. All I know is my transmitter is 2.3.11. When I try to down load open companion 2.3.11 it keeps sending notifications. I don't know what I'm doing. Can I bypass version version 2.3.12 and 2.3.13 and just down load version 2.3.14, it seems to be the only one that will download successfully.
You can upgrade to the latest. OpenTx takes baby steps. Anything within 2.3.x should be fine.
@@RCVideoReviews john thank you for your instant replies,
How can i set the RTH function on my radio?
There is no RTH function on the radio.
Any ideas?
When I setup sync on Companion, it just always seems to work. I would just make sure you have the source and destination set correctly.
Appreciate the reply. I figured it out. As per usual it was user error. I was selecting the drive that the radio was showing in but the the actual sd card was showing in a completely different drive. So when i realized that it worked. Thx again though. I will sub!
Glad you figured it out.
Is this playlist also valid for Radioking? Sorry, my first Opentx
They use the same software. So Radiomaster, Radioking, Jumper, Horus, and Taranis will all be able to use these tutorials.
Hi! thanks for the awesome videos. But I messed something up while updating the opentx firmware. somehow half of the menu icons and stock images are gone from my tx. I have a couple icons, and despite no icon image, I still have the names of the menu position that I am in at any given time. Ie. in the menu, there is no image at the top of the screen for the SD card option, but below where the image would be it still says SD card.
Hi John when i try to use opentx simulator itvs apper a message Simulator for thaïs Firmware is not available do you an issue for that problem Thanks Lucien.
What firmware/radio are you using?
I’m using 2.3.13 When i connect the radio to computer to setup my plane with opentx is that the same procedure when install firmware ?? The two trim button and turn it on and connect USB cable to computer??
Where do you get the sexy sound of the 'playtrack' in ratiomaster ?
That is the Amber sound pack. You can download it here: hmvc.eu/Amber22.rar
Currently my radio has 2.3.9 on it. When downloading the executable file for companion should i download 2.3.9 or 2.3.11 which is the update? Will there a be a problem. I think the video says to download the file that matches your radio. Just wondering. Thanks.
Sorry wasn't clear on that until you said your radio was plugged in. I didn't see any Drive E: show up when i plugged in my radio to a usb port automatically and before causing a problem i thought i better ask. Many thanks.
@@alvandergoot7237 There's no case where you should have to take the SD card out of the radio. The radio acts as a great big USB thumb drive. So treat it that way. When you plug it in, select SD CARD and you can read/write to the card just as if you plugged the card directly into an onboard reader.
@@RCVideoReviews okay thanks. oddly enough when i select sd card on the radio when i plug it in i cant see a drive icon although i hear the sound the computer makes when i usually plug in a usb storage device. icon is hidden somewhere. i will have to get that sorted. thanks for your response and help. cheers.
@@alvandergoot7237 Yeah, that's an OS issue not a radio issue.
How do you use the scroll wheel on the simulator. Mine does not work well
Hover your mouse pointer over the scroll wheel in the simulator and use your mouse wheel to scroll the jog dial. It works on my setup.
Computer will not connect to Radio, just comes up as USB device not recognized error code 43
Have tried two different windows 10 pc's with same problem.
I would suggest getting hold of Radiomaster, you may have a hardware problem.
Before you do, make sure you have the System option set to ASK for USB Connection. And make sure you click on SD Card. One other thing: If you have access to Mac or Linux, try on one of those.
@@RCVideoReviews Thanks for the help ,ended up trying a different usb type 3 cable and then it worked :)
3:25 What should be selected for the Radiomaster TX18S ?
RadioKING TX18s can use the T18.
@@RCVideoReviews Thanks. Glad you caught KING!
@@kevinsmith9420 Yeah, we've got the TX16s, T18, TX18s...so wanted to make sure we were both referring to the same radio.
i think you have the SD structure instructions wrong... thats the location on your hard drive you back up your sd card contents not the tx SD card location... ... The SD card Sync prepopulates that folder name you put in the SD Structure folder entry. .... when you did an SD card sync it prepopped with your E drive.
Yeah, I realized what I did after the video. It does still work with the radio attached. I'll update the description with the correction.
@@RCVideoReviews still great video!

Hi Robert, Welcome to the channel. I have a playlist for beginners here: th-cam.com/play/PLy3TC1ILJYTjqDXFB84oXVWZG14zyMYYt.html
That playlist covers a wide range of topics at the beginner level. Here are a couple of affiliate links to buy the radio:

► Radiomaster Max Edition www.banggood.com/custlink/D3DRP8WNrZ
How do you reverse yaw?
On the Outputs screen there are arrows near the right side. Scroll to your yaw output, click, scroll over to the arrow, click and reverse the arrow.

You can use it without Companion. You can make a new model with 7 button presses.
I keep bricking my radio
Maybe watch this: th-cam.com/users/liveLItyAkJlcdU

Would be nice if one could read the screen

This particular video literally shows you how to google for opentx companion, download it, and install it with no assumption about what you already have or don't have on your computer. th-cam.com/video/ye9Yaj_jUA8/w-d-xo.html
There are also 7 steps demonstrated in this video showing exactly how to configure and use the software.
1) Download and Install Companion
2) Create a Radio Profile
3) Tour of the Software and Its Settings
4) Read Models and Settings from the Radio
5) Editing a Model
6) Running a Simulation
7) Writing Models and Settings to the Radio
If you have a specific question you should try asking it.

@@skyguy5605 OpenTx is a complicated topic with a great deal of interdependencies. And it is very difficult to make videos short enough to watch, and long enough to be meaningful. I've done three things to address these issues:
1) I've separated out the material into beginner, and intermediate/advanced playlists.
I’ll be sure to tune in thanks
