They shot that in the same Georgia parking garage they shot Walker's bit of the "gearing-up" montage where he takes the Kevlar vest marked FBI from his trunk and rips the "FBI" off -- whereas most of "6" was shot in Scotland and England. We actually have sets pics from the night Walker shot that scene in 2013 -- if I'm recalling correctly, it might've even been the same Atlanta parking garage they shot the Dom and Sean Boswell scene in, either later that same night or a different night that week.

Well, there were several "switches" -- due to how films are made, out of sequence as opposed to story-order, they alternated between the real Paul and CGI every 30 minutes or so, depending on what Paul Walker had already shot before he died.
Sure are a lot of self-appointed CG 'experts' in these comments... Anyway, stunning work! I seriously did not realize all these shots were CG both times I watched the movie. Thought it was just that final goodbye scene. Had no idea of the scope of this. If you weren't aware and looking for it it was totally invisible. Hats off.
I didn't realize Grand Moff Tarkin was CGI until I saw ILM's vfx breakdown of Rogue One. So it looked pretty real to me. This is not better, both are excellent.

I would always go through this movie & try to guess which parts were the CGI imposed onto his brothers faces. Some were pretty obvious, others not so obvious. Looking at it, they definitely lifted a lot of stuff from Fast Five & Fast 6.

My guess would be that it's all done using Autodesk Maya + some in house proprietary tools. Maya has been the main tool of choice for most effects houses out there and is probably still the favourite, but there are other free opensource tools out there getting better and better that can, with enough time and patience, produce high end cg, but human faces have always been the ultimate 3d cg test for any aspiring effects artist/animator...it's all about trying to avoid the famous 'uncanny valley' and it looks like the artists/programmers at Weta have done an amazing job here !

I want to call it a nice save of the visual director and its team, but I would never want them to bring back Paul Walkers Brian into later films. I just think they should if needed, shoot maybe one scene where it shows that Brian is out of the leauge taking care of Mia and Jack...but nothing more. Peter Cushing died 23 years ago, they didn't exactly have a lot of great HD reference material to work with, nor immediate kin that bore a striking resemblance, I think they did pretty damn good considering the facts and challenges involved.

Gollum, King Kong, Caesar, and Snoke were not materialized out of nothing, and were not "animated characters." And those animated movies where there are no actors? There's still an entire brigade of character animators bringing those CG creations to life. The only thing that might be replaced here is not actors (I count animators as actors), but movie stars or celebrities. We might eventually get to the point, and you can see it happening already, that the Brad Pitts and Tom Cruises of the world will be replaced with essentially CG celebrities that are brought to life by a character actor or animator, but then again those performers might get the fame that would be associated with their creation. If you want to push it, one could make the case that eventually AI will get so good that it can create an entire thinking "actor," but until computers and AI can make artistic choices that are subtle and nuanced, whether its an Andy Serkis type performer, or the brigade of animators, directors and filmmakers are still going to be in high demand of 'actors.'
