Well, that’s just how it is. VFX artists generally are unnamed to to public, unless someone does a real deep dive on them in the credits. But, I would also say that without Andy serkis’s performance and his acting, even with the greatest model in the world, Gollum wouldn’t be what he is. These guys are just able to transform that performance into beautiful CGI. But in film production you learn that technical achievement always comes secondary to content
the tissue video of the horse is a great help to me and my fellow vet tech students. It would be great if someone made this into a vet tech interactive teaching aid.
i love smeagol, and i love wetd digitals. I love love love and love to work with all of you in weta digitals. My ambition is to be vfx designer. I respect you..
This is insane detailing.. the work on Gollum in the hobbit is i think the best CG work in the history of film.. Lord of the rings gollum was much naive compared to this.. This is absolutely life like .. and the best part is they can capture 100% of Andy's performance and expressions .. plus amazing rendering and compositing.. The more i see Hobbit's CG the better i feel .. they are so earthly .. one can hardly distinguish it from real .. and they mix prosthetics with CG which is great. prosthetics can never bring out performance . the digital hedgehog in radagast's arm was insanely real. i always thought that was real until they revealed in the commentary ..
CG muscle system is not that new a technology . What's " new" here is that is Weta's system is more aimed at motion and performance capture rather than traditional animation .
for that particular job you have to go the computer science route and know how to program, its different from the artistic side of computer animation its more the research and development side. look on the weta digital job site for requirements
Great work guys. Although I do thing Azog would have looked better as a prosthetic actor. Gollum was amazing though, the detail in those textures was fantastic.
@Eurebel Die Jungs, die den Academy Award gewonnen haben, sind die, die Tissue entwickelt haben. Dafür gab es ja auch den Preis. Und sehen tut man sie sehr wohl, einfach Augen auf.
sometimes i notice in different vfx tutorials of films and what not and how they look through the processes, is the reason why sometimes you see multi-colored bones becuz they were scanned into the MRI machine? it just made me think that cuz in this video you see bones with the mesh of the hand...im a real novice, i hardly understand "how" to achieve this commands and so forth so they computer can create these amazing effects.
I don't think they were really going for hyper realism with The Hobbit. Everything from the lighting to the exaggerated character designs and makeup make me think they wanted a more surreal look for the film. It worked marvelously, imo.
Yeah, when/if Blender gets the new UI, it will gain millions of users, I tell ya! It has incredible potentials in it, which you cannot find in any other SINGULAR and especially FREE package! But joking apart, before it happens it's ridiculously useless.. if I have to learn over 100 shortcuts to make things that I can make on few clicks that means there is something wrong with it..
dzodzu Damn ! we have the same thinking !! :p ; but why always the " goodies " comes with Maya ?!! maybe because it's eaysier than Blender ?! i am working with blender and it's very easy to work wih it ;) Sorry for the "poor English" .
For each of your examples, Weta can raise ILM a candle of their own. Avengers Hulk vs Kong? Davey Jones vs Gollum? Manhattan vs Middle Earth or Pandora? Rango vs Tintin? Jurassic Park dinos vs King Kong dinos?
Agreed. The less you use CG, better the outcome. That's why LOTR trilogy is way better. The Hobbit have CGI everywhere. Whole shots of pure CGI... That's bad.
@@filipelucciano So what?! I work in the industry for 20 years now. I think most people visiting this channel have a CG related job. The effects in the Hobbit weren't worse than the effects in LoTR. In fact they were improved quite a lot. What made The Hobbit look 'weird' is the fact that it was filmed at 48fps and you also might not like the movies as much because it had a lot less action and is a less interesting story. But the CGI was at least at the same level as LoTR.
@@Capeau I don't know man... The fact that LOTR used real mockups made it look better... Can't explain why but in wide shots it works better. Not only in The Hobbit. I agree with the fps thing. What I'm trying to say is that CGI is great... but it stops looking great when u overdo it. Like, u need to do CGI with Gollum, Smaug... Even with Azog. But that barrel scene was crap. Using CGI when u could use prosthetics makes it ehhh...
Then you are remembering it through rose-tinted glasses. There's lots of effects, both practical and digital, in LOTR which don't quite hold up. The Hobbit is much less flawed.
I know it's a personal preference, but I feel like Weta is doing a more artistic work while ILM does a more technical work. That's may be because Weta does essentially fantasy movies thought...
Autodesk Maya running their proprietary and not for sale Tissue software however one of those two made a commercial version of the same software called Ziva.
I know that some have used varying levels of deformation in their model movements, but to my knowledge no one has utilized the Tissue system. I think it's just too much detail for systems at the moment to handle with any efficiency.
Hi Weta. If I want to work at Weta with rigging department as a Digital Sculptor/modeler should I invest a few years learning to draw at a fine arts school?
No offense to Weta, but they'll always be second best by ILM. They are very good, but ILM's work seems looks and feels the best in the industry. The Hulk in Avengers, Davey Jones in Pirates of the Carribean, an entirely digital New York, dinos in Jurrassic Park 20 years ago.

don't think I don't appreciate what you or any vfx teams do, because I do appreciate it... simply from a viewers perspective, I didn't enjoy watching some of the visual effects in the film, where as in LOTR I could not fault any vfx...
Because no one at the Academy knows shit about shit. The only reason why anyone takes them seriously is because the public thinks they're well respected and authoritative. Hardly anyone who votes knows what the difference between a sound mixer and a sound editor is, or have any idea why the vfx guys insist on having them take a picture of that mirrored ball, or have any clue about lensing or what shots are truly hard to execute. AMPAS is were creatives pretend they know the technical side.
On average I agree. Some things in The Hobbit look better, like Gollum, but as a whole the effects just aren't as good. A big reason for this was the abundance of CG in The Hobbit compared to LotR.
WETA you guys better make this open source! hogging revolutionary new technology is just wrong! hell, if disney can do it with ptex you guys can do it with tissue
This is flat-out bull. I've spent half my career replacing dodgy-looking practical effects with CG versions. Often times a miniature is inappropriate since you can more readily reproduce a particular form of lighting digitally, if you're skilled enough.
Come on, Weta! 360p? Really? :)

People should give more credit to these guys, instead of crowning Andy Serkis alone for what Gollum has become.

Well.. An expensive mouse doesn't really do anything much if the computer is just an "Average" computer.

The execution of the technology is definitely praise worthy .
Every mocap peformance is enhanced and added to by animators. Besides, the muscle system is applied to all animated characters as well.

i want to know how to make this muscle system. i wanna make my favorite anime scenes.
amazing realistic tech !!!
Apart of this, Simon, you should take care not only for muscles... but for teeth now !!

is that The Flash at 4:19 ?
I forgot to like the video, so I came back to like it ;D

you sure, cause at 1:48 it looked like maya, maybe they use different programs in combination to create their stuff.
i like this animation
plus alot of custom software and custom plugins for maya.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you probably viewed the movie in HFR ?
There are more awards given besides just the main ceremony ones.
wich computer do you use ?
Allthough this is the best quality CGI, I still found hobbit a little weird looking.

How long until we can start integrating this kind of tech into video games?
We already do!

If I could learn this, AI and robotics as well as 3d printing, I'll be creating the perfect humanoid, which runs on solar power through skin.
holy f...k , this model must takes a millions of poly & gigabytes of textures, real actors soon can go for a rest.
I prefer Lord of the Rings when the actors were real and not CGI, it came off more real unlike the hobbit lol.
