    People should give more credit to these guys, instead of crowning Andy Serkis alone for what Gollum has become.

      Who?

    • @KrakenEyeGaming
      @KrakenEyeGaming 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, that’s just how it is. VFX artists generally are unnamed to to public, unless someone does a real deep dive on them in the credits. But, I would also say that without Andy serkis’s performance and his acting, even with the greatest model in the world, Gollum wouldn’t be what he is. These guys are just able to transform that performance into beautiful CGI. But in film production you learn that technical achievement always comes secondary to content

    This is insane detailing.. the work on Gollum in the hobbit is i think the best CG work in the history of film.. Lord of the rings gollum was much naive compared to this.. This is absolutely life like .. and the best part is they can capture 100% of Andy's performance and expressions .. plus amazing rendering and compositing.. The more i see Hobbit's CG the better i feel .. they are so earthly .. one can hardly distinguish it from real .. and they mix prosthetics with CG which is great. prosthetics can never bring out performance . the digital hedgehog in radagast's arm was insanely real. i always thought that was real until they revealed in the commentary ..

    sometimes i notice in different vfx tutorials of films and what not and how they look through the processes, is the reason why sometimes you see multi-colored bones becuz they were scanned into the MRI machine? it just made me think that cuz in this video you see bones with the mesh of the hand...im a real novice, i hardly understand "how" to achieve this commands and so forth so they computer can create these amazing effects.

    I don't think they were really going for hyper realism with The Hobbit. Everything from the lighting to the exaggerated character designs and makeup make me think they wanted a more surreal look for the film. It worked marvelously, imo.

    • @filipelucciano
      @filipelucciano 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed. The less you use CG, better the outcome. That's why LOTR trilogy is way better. The Hobbit have CGI everywhere. Whole shots of pure CGI... That's bad.

    • @Capeau
      @Capeau 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@filipelucciano So what?! I work in the industry for 20 years now. I think most people visiting this channel have a CG related job.
      The effects in the Hobbit weren't worse than the effects in LoTR. In fact they were improved quite a lot.
      What made The Hobbit look 'weird' is the fact that it was filmed at 48fps and you also might not like the movies as much because it had a lot less action and is a less interesting story.
      But the CGI was at least at the same level as LoTR.

    • @filipelucciano
      @filipelucciano 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Capeau I don't know man... The fact that LOTR used real mockups made it look better... Can't explain why but in wide shots it works better. Not only in The Hobbit. I agree with the fps thing. What I'm trying to say is that CGI is great... but it stops looking great when u overdo it. Like, u need to do CGI with Gollum, Smaug... Even with Azog. But that barrel scene was crap. Using CGI when u could use prosthetics makes it ehhh...

  • @mastermike7000
    @mastermike7000 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Then you are remembering it through rose-tinted glasses. There's lots of effects, both practical and digital, in LOTR which don't quite hold up. The Hobbit is much less flawed.

    Because no one at the Academy knows shit about shit. The only reason why anyone takes them seriously is because the public thinks they're well respected and authoritative. Hardly anyone who votes knows what the difference between a sound mixer and a sound editor is, or have any idea why the vfx guys insist on having them take a picture of that mirrored ball, or have any clue about lensing or what shots are truly hard to execute. AMPAS is were creatives pretend they know the technical side.
