Six months into his first term in office, Javier Milei isn't afraid to be blunt about how he plans to save the country's economy. The staunchly libertarian Argentine President swept into office easily on an unconventional slogan: "There's no money." As he tells @Ian_Bremmer, he’s spending nearly every waking hour trying to reverse decades of misgovernance and economic mismanagement. And so far, most international experts agree: it seems to be working.
When he ran for office, the economics professor-turned-TV pundit-turned-presidential-candidate vowed to eliminate Argentina’s central bank and threatened to replace the Argentine peso with the American dollar. But once he came to office, a more pragmatic approach to economic reform emerged. And in just six months, his administration has managed to slow Argentina's 300% annual inflation and turn a budget deficit into a surplus. "We have actually completed the largest reform in the history of Argentina," he proudly tells Bremmer in an exclusive new interview for GZERO World, highlighting the scale of his efforts to overturn what he calls "100 years of decadence."
In this wide-ranging conversation, Milei lays out his “shock therapy” approach to reversing Argentina’s economic missteps, his democracy vs autocracy geopolitical outlook, and his thoughts on China and Israel. The coming years will tell if the fiery new president’s idiosyncrasies may just end up being some of the least noteworthy things about him.

@@Hamish-f4b He was only granted executive powers in some particular areas, and not even all of the ones he asked for. That was one of the compromises he had to make to get his reforms passed.

The full executive power of the state makes an Argentinian president a 'giant' of sorts.

The sacrifice you mention is the sacrifice of the poorest social classes. Implicitly, capital is being transferred from the poorest to large companies. More than 50% of the population does not agree with the policies implemented by this government. A Coke costs more in Argentina than in the United States and the salaries that the vast majority of us have are less than 500 dollars. They are causing irreversible damage to Argentina.

The American private sector does well at producing profits, and providing safe havens for investors.
It has a different set of problems than Argentina, obviously.
However, producing real world efficiency doesn't seem to happen often enough.
This private sector we're dealing with seems to need some kind of efficiency watchdog to guide development, ultimately.
This economy is very good at producing jobs, I'm just not sure they're the right ones.

I'm no economist and the situation is complex. I like Milei, he has his heart, efforts, and passion for change in the right place. And in spite of his political ideology he is, commendably, pragmatic. I do believe he wants to help all the Argentines - in time. But really, what he is doing is a grand experiment. How much is the success of this experiment is dependent on the entrepreneurship of the Argentines and willingness of trading partners to engage? Do other courses of action, alternative experiments we might say, exist? I do feel the people made the right choice to abandon the policies of old. But what if Milei does not get the engagement from the rest of the world to balance his economy? What if the people get impatient with the pace of resolution to the economic woes? What if Milei fails, and what would be the reasons for the failure - internal or external factors? Can Argentina afford to fail? I wish the best possible outcome for the Argentines.
For me, the key are your first words: "the situation is complex". Having that in mind, it's clear that conventional measures will not work. On the good news are that Argentina has well prepared people, large amount of natural resources but they need to understand that it is not possible to spend more money than they have and they need to solve a lot of corruption issues and then investment will come without doubts.
Im argentinian, and had to stop my study and investigation (in archaeology) in order to get an office job online in the US (pays 4 usd an hour) because of the economic policy of this man. Im not the only one. Say whatever you want abt the peronist goverment, but they allways have a better relation with investigation, tecnology, industry and consumptiom, people spent and produce, unlike with what happens now, consumption plummeted, investigators and new tecnology are NOT being developed anymore, they are closing industries and investigation centers. If this is "freedom" please put me back in jail.
AND my problems are nothig compared to people who are REALLY strugling.

20 years ago I would have considered him too radical to vote for. But currently the Left is so insane (especially the populist rotten variant of Argentina) that I'm glad he's the president. I don't agree with everything, and his energy worries me. Meaning: He's often very confrontational and quite toxic. Not at all a diplomatic type. But... he's the only way out for Argentina and I believe he can do a lot of good for a better future. And he's right about Israel. Even though I hate the current government there, but the Western left has adopted a pile of lies about it and I'm quite fed up with that. Gracias Milei!

He always said (since always, even a year before he was pressident) that he as president would not seek any alliance or business with Comunist, but he would not stop other citizen to do business with China or anybody else if they want, because if he would do that, he would not be libertarian. Not sure where is the lack of coherence?
We still have a big debt with China (from the last goverment) and he is paying that back as any debt or contract. He is very clear that all contracts and debt should be pay and respect, this causes Argentine bonds to appreciate in value because they gain trust.

Ian, next time before interviewing Milei, please come to Argentina, so you can see it for yourself. It’s a disaster. There’s a híper recession. True, he saved us from hiperinflation but this is not sustainable. Senator earn U$s 8000 a month and a retiree U$s 200 approximately. It’s the same with everybody.
