the main character, Steven Universe is basically a reincarnation of his "mom," a sentient alien gemstone named rose quartz.(most of the characters are gemstones who can project humanoid forms, the singer is a pearl) gemstones have a rigid class based hierarchy in which pearls are only allowed to exist as servants. this pearl belonged to rose until after seeing what life was like on earth, rose started a rebellion against their homeworld (who aside from their horrible class structure were going to destroy earth for resources)pearl loved her former master but thousands of years later, she met greg universe, and fell in love, leading to her choosing to sacrifice her physical form to create a half human hybrid son.
Steven Universe is...not an easy show to explain.

She was in love with the mc's mom but the mc's mom fell in love with his dad, leading to a kind of rivalrytrying to see who gets more attentionand possibly even who gets to date her. Now the mom is dead is over and she's lost her chance to be with the mom

Pearl, the singer, is singing about her lost love, who is Steven’s (the kid, who is the main character in the show) mother, Rose Quartz. Another important tidbit is that they’re both gem-based aliens.
Pearl was Rose’s right hand woman for millennia. She’s been by her side, watched her grow and transform, fought a war by her side, protected her, and yes, loved her. She didn’t mind about her random flings with random humans throughout their centuries of life. They didn’t actually matter, they were small exciting curiosities. Until Greg, Steven’s dad. Rose chose Greg, chose to bring a child to the world despite knowing it would essentially kill her, leaving Pearl behind to look after her son. And Pearl loves the boy with all her heart, but she can’t look at the kid without thinking about her dead love, and can’t look at his father without the bitterness of feeling like it’s his fault, like he took Rose away from her, like she was abandoned.
It’s a pretty heartbreaking story for a kids cartoon.
I highly recommend watching the show. It's an awesome show.
As for context:
Basically, there was a war on earth thousands of years ago between two factions of these gemstone-based lifeforms: the homework gems, who wanted to do to earth what they had done to so many other planets before (colonize the planet, then create more of their people from the planet in a process that drains the life from the earth itself, killing all organic life on the planet), and the crystal gems, who rebelled against their homeworld and fought to defend the earth and the life on it. Without getting into any major spoilers, the crystal gems won, but were almost completely wiped out. The woman the singer in this video (Pearl) loved was the leader of the crystal gems, Rose Quartz. They were a couple for thousands of years, until Greg came along. Rose ended up leaving Pearl for Greg, got pregnant, and had their son, the titular Steven Universe, knowing that in order for Steven to live, she would die, as Steven needed her gem to live. Pearl and the other surviving crystal gems are helping raise Steven, and Pearl has a bit of an understandably rough relationship with Greg. It's a great show with Steven coming into his mother's powers and trying to figure out himself and where he fits into everything, and about how he grows throughout the series
Thanks for reacting to this! The context is that pearl,the singer, fell in love with someone who didn't love her back in the same way. That woman, Rose, then had a child, Steven, with another man and Pearl never really got over it. There is a follow up song "Both of you" where these feeling are dealt with.
rebecca sugar hinted that pearl's love for rose is not necessarily unrequited- I think it's safer to say rose DID love pearl in the same way, for a long time, before she met greg. And even when she did fall in love with greg, I think she did still love pearl just as much. It's just that the love she had for greg ended up giving her an opportunity that pearl never could- the possibility to truly become something new.

SPOILERS: I figured I would try and give my explanation of what's happening. So Pearl was actually made to be a servant but she fell in love with her master (Rose Quartz), the woman she is grieving about in this song. Pearl has trained every day and has dedicated every aspect of her being to protecting and pleasing her master, hence the lines, "War and glory, reinvention. Fusion, freedom, her attention". Consequently, once her master/love interest dies, she is devastated and no longer has a purpose in her life. This is why it is so hard for Pearl to move on and why she tries taking care of Steven, it is all in honor of the dedication to her deceased love. (Although, she does honestly care for Steven like a real son). Additionally, Pearl gave so much to her love that it hurts that much more that Rose chose a human (That sad guy in the end of the video) over Pearl. Pearl's character arc is all about moving on and gaining true independence with the help of friends. I love pearl's character arc, in my opinion, it is extremely in depth.

It isn't over yet lol; also she's talking about Steven's mom who she was in love with. That part in the middle was her reminiscing about how his mom made her feel. She wasn't slighted but she certainly felt overlooked and replaced by Steven's dad. Also his mom basically committed suicide to create Steven. She's literally trying to move on from her death.

"It's Over Isn't It" is truly a lovely song. I'm not sure how you didn't understand it even if you didn't watch the show. I guess you just have to understand how she's feeling😕. When I first heard this song I couldn't stop listening to it, and I had it on repeat remembering my past and who I used to be😔. I used to follow around behind a person I truly loved (Ima just call them W). W didn't really think of me anything more than a Bestfriend or a sibling. One day she met this guy and started to hang out with him more. My jealousy got carried away and I made W choose between me and him. But with the way I was acting that day W choose him and I never seen them since 😓. I made a mistake and if I ever see W again ima just run the other way because I don't want to be connected to my past in any way....

Your take was something. I don’t think I agree with it after having watched the whole series, but I can see where you were trying to come from.
Basically she’s singing about her lover, rose quartz, who is a gem. Gems are aliens from a planet called “home world” however quartzes are from earth. Pearls were meant to be made as servants and she used to serve rose quartz until rose made a rebellion against homeworld. She was in love with rose for so many years but rose met Greg, the one with long hair in the bed. At first, rose was just using Greg for entertainment however eventually falling for Greg and having a son. The son, who is the main character (Steven) couldn’t exist without rose becoming half of him, so Steven became a half human-half gem hybrid. Pearl is basically singing about how she should have confessed earlier because she already chose to let Steven live and she’s permanently gone.

So the woman you saw there singing the song is named Pearl and she was with a woman named Rose that you saw in the clouds she was the big one first with pearl so both of them Pearl and Rose went to Earth a had a war thousands of years later the were on earth and met a few new friends whish some died in the war of trying to protect the earth later Rose met Greg as you saw in the end they made a child but Rose and Pearl and the new friends were not human that how they survived the war thousands of years ago since Rose was not human she had to transform into her baby son so she did that sje didn't exist anymore and Pearl was kinda like a slave but not she was always by her side but when the hit earth she was sure she would sent her free bit at the end she never left her side so when Rose "died" she thought she was alone and as the baby boy was named Steven Universe she did any thing to get her back now the non humans are called gems and dimonds rose was a dimond and had a dimond in her belly and if you take that out i think youll be shattered so pearl thought if she took out the diamond out of steven she will have Rose back but im pretty sure she tried but didn't she knew she was gone but as he grew up it was jard for greg to take care of him so Steven lived with the gems also the new friends are gems so as Steven got older he had to deal what Rose did and he suffered the consequences the Gems and Dimonds thout he was his mom Rose when he was sixteen he suffered childhood trauma he couldn't go to school since all the fighting he had to do now all gems and Dimonds have a power or more now only Dimonds have like a power to control and theres only 4 Dimonds Rose was under cover as Rose Quartz but was actually Pink Dimonds Rose faked her deat or known shattering Pearl was the only one that knew about it the Diamonds didn't know and were so sad that she was "Shattered" also pink diamond. Since they didn't know Steven was blamed for all of it sinve they thought she Was Rose Quartz also known as the shattering of Pink Diamond when was Steven was sixteen he moved out and was going to 39 states to find himself as a HUMAN not a gem or Diamond just a human of course Rose friends fought with him they loved him they took care of him so did pearl she moved on at the end of the show so the were so sad when he moved out and so was he greg still saw him through out the show the diamonds kinda abused pink Diamond never had time but they did have time for her Pink Diamond was like a baby she threw tantrums and so she faved her shattering pink Diamond is Rose Quartz
