Yep. Also as much as I think this song is well sung, I think 'You both love me and I love Both Of You" deserves love because not only is it a super emotional song, but it is a lovely insight into Rose's feelings and how she loved them :3

Were she and Rose ever actually together? I sort of got the impression that Rose kind of strung Pearl along a bit, because she loved her attention, but it wasn't really a relationship? Though I haven't seen the show I do know enough by osmosis to get the idea that Rose is sort of complicated, growing from a rather self centred person to someone with a lot of empathy. Point being I got the impression it certainly wasn't a healthy relationship. Pearl was possessive, Rose wasn't really forthright or didn't quite give as much as Pearl did.

Pearl (singer) was in love with Rose but Rose was a gem so it was technically impossible for her to have a kid, but she did with Greg (the man with long hair). Rose gave up her life and body, so she turned into her son who is now half human half gem.
Pearl is now a parent and mentor to teach Steven (the son) how to be a proper gem. But pearl's whole purpose was to be a servant for Rose so of course she was in love

That doesn't make a ton of sense? Animation is typically done after recording is finished to begin with. The only reason I can see this happening, is if CN's interference put them in such a crunch to produce the episodes that prelay simply wasn't able to happen.

"both of you" kills me after this one. The way it conveys Rose through steven's words
It's powerful on its own, but in the context of the story, this song is devastating. Pearl loves Steven even as she grieves Rose and resents Greg, but has to deal with Greg as a co-parent. Steven has arranged this trip to get his dad and his surrogate mom to finally talk things out. This is ostensibly a kid's show, but it is written on a very adult level.

@@paloma4444 Both songs totally wreck me. I kinda chuckle at how Steven can suddenly play piano. He's never been seen near one before, there aren't any keyboards in the house. He walks up to the piano, shoos the piano player away, and proceeds to make us all cry.

Other Friends was such a earworm and had it stuck in my head for a month or two after hearing it. lol
Other Friends is a bop, but Drift Away is much more emotional and interesting from a music theory perspective

Between this, Here comes a Thought and Drift away, Steven Universe does not hold back on the emotional tones. Glad you like this one. I love how Pearl's incredible poise and grace as a warrior and protector transfer into being a spectacular dancer.

this is literally my favorite song ever and hearing someone who doesn't know the context react to it from just a musical standpoint is fascinating... this proves that it's such a beautiful and emotional song even on it's own...
*VERY LONG explanation below*
the one singing [pearl] is a thousands of years old alien who was made specifically to be a servant for another alien [rose quartz] who eventually rebelled against the leaders of her home planet and started a war to protect the earth, pearl was her second in command, she eventually fell in love with her but it was kind of one sided. thousands of years after the war was over [around the 1980s] rose fell in love with greg [the guy sleeping around the beginning] and pearl was extremely jealous because she had been in love with rose for thousands of years and rose just went for a human instead. sometime in the early 2000s rose decided she wanted to have a kid with greg, but since she was an alien she couldn't have a baby, so she gave up her physical form to produce a baby from her gem [basically she died giving birth]. and that baby was steven [who is 14 at this point in the show]
this episode is about steven taking pearl and greg to new york city so they could get away from life for awhile and bond and have a fun time together, but pearl who is still upset about greg taking the love of her life away from her just feels uncomfortable around greg and all she can think about is the fact that he's the reason that rose is gone.
*TLDR:* the woman she was in love with for thousands of years left her to be with a human and is now dead
a fun fact about this song was that in the Spanish Latin version,the pearl voice actor(María José Estévez) cries several when she was recording the song,because she found the songs was extremely sad.
once you know the fuller picture, it's even more sad. Rose never realized that pearl was loving her, and pearl was hoping to one day it would change.
Now if you ask me, it was not because Rose was "evil", she saw pearls devotion as "left over programming", and might have been constantly trying to push her away into becoming her own individual person.

If you are looking for another Steven Universe song with deep emotion but bops, then definitely react to "Other Friends" by Rebecca Sugar. Similar to this there is a video (fight scene) that goes along with this. (It comes from Steven Univese the Movie/Musical).

David The Hooman yep yep! I believe AT was her first major project with Cartoon Network and she worked with a few other animators initially to bring it to life. SU is her second big project and has just as much awesome lore, representation, and character development as her first series. And it has a ton of her amazing original music. So many Steven Universe songs are bops.

The thing with the piano is that all characters in Steven Universe have assigned musical instruments to them, so you'll hear the piano with Pearl all the time. It's especially noticeable in another Pearl song, Do It For Her, which has an... IDK how to describe it, spiraling? piano sequence in the middle of the song, which also explains a bit of the intensity of the story in that part. It's a really cool detail, that I've always loved in shows like these.
"Other Friends" and "Drift away" from the Steven Universe movie are both really good. "Love Like You" is also pretty good.
And to put some context to the song, for those who dont know and are curious. Pearl, the one singing, was in love with a another Gem named Rose for thousands of years. Rose one day met Greg, the older man, and they fell in love. He and Rose had a baby named Steven and she had to give up her physical form, her life, to let steven live. Leaving Pearl all alone on a planet that she only stayed on for Rose.
Literally everyone who goes into this song blind: Okay, SOMEBODY died.
I love how here at the last "It's over isn't it?" he grins and tells her "because you're in love" like she doesn't realize it.
And then when he gets to the full episode he realizes the full impact of "it's over isn't it?"
So, the essential storyline is that she loved a woman and survived a war with her. She loved her and expect to be in a relationship after. She was originally a “pearl” whitch is someone who’s meant to serve a higher power. Her lover was the higher power. Neither of them are human, and when they came to earth, the higher power ( Rose quartz )met a human man, and they had a son. Now, Their son treats her like an aunt and now knows she loved his mother.
I recommend “Both of You” from Steven Universe
It takes place after “It’s Over, Isn’t It?”
I love RWBY, but I loved the music in Steven Universe first and I'm so glad you're listening to both
My favorite song from Steven Universe is "Here Comes a Thought." It has story to it you won't know about, but it'd still be awesome if you listened to it

Specifically, in this song Pearl (the one singing) hasn't just broken up with someone. She's grieving. The whole "and now she's gone, and I've got to be there for her son" is pretty dang literal, as Rose died, leaving her to care for Steven

Definitely very jazz musical theatre. I LOVE this too! So Broadway-esque. Especially the progression at “she’s gone and it’s over” and that belt on the word gone is nice. The chords are so nice. 🥺👏🏽♥️
This show's music is FULL of Major 9 chords, and I live for it. If you'd like, other songs I'd recommend are Stronger Than You, Here Comes a Thought, Love Like You (the end credits theme), Escapism, That Distant Shore, and Drift Away (from the movie).
the whole show explores difficult emotions with music, i think you might like exploring more of it if you haven't already. this character was dealing with heartbreak and grief in this song at the same time. so the song hits even harder when you listen for the grief and understand that doesn't always get easier even if years go by, especially if you were in love with the person too. it's a great piece.

Wow this song is just so beautiful. When this episode first aired it was like a week after I had a big breakup up and I remember crying big studio ghibly tears.
The fact that someone who hasn’t seen the show can tell that pearl was in love with rose truly shows that the feelings are real and strong (in my opinion). Whenever pearl would talk about Rose would make me think that she liked her and then this song happened and I was like ha I called it. Holy shit, i love SU this song makes me cry all the time, if you want bops that aren't sad imo than there is, "stronger than you" which would be best, but of you want sad but beautiful listen to "drift away" although if you ever get to "you can make a change" id reccomended listening to Caleb Hyles' cover since he adds an extended verse which puts a newer twist on the song

This was the song that officially broke me into Steven Universe. I listened to it about a year after losing someone I loved who was called Rosa (rose in Spanish) so you can bet it killed me.
One of the greatest pieces of advice ive ever received is "we cant make ourselves move on. We can only move forward and hope it gets easier to carry." And i think about that every time i listen to this track.
For context for people who havent seen the series, she is a crystal gem named pearl and she was in love with the leader of their group named rose, but rose chose the older man in the scene and had a kid named steven (boy next to him). But since theyre basically aliens, she died in order for steven to live and pearl became a caretaker to steven. However she still hasn't moved on from rose due to reasons that i dont want to explain because of spoilers

I am so glad I saw your video. I haven’t listened to this song in a while and your reaction reminded me of how I felt when I first saw it. I remember crying because it brought back so many memories of heartbreak. Especially, when your young and just beginning this whole love thing. Your brain says “It’s over, it’s done, they’re gone, it’s the end.” But your hearts like “So why am I still crying?”
Explanation: pearl [the person singing] was in love and a servent for the main characters mom who fell in love with the main characters dad. The mom died when she was giving birth and now pearl is left to take care of and raise her son.
what happened was that the woman she loved fell in love with another man, and Rose (the one she loved) had a son, Steven, and in order to have Steven , she was made inside steven and pearl misses her and knows she will never see her again. And she says "Its over isnt it"
This is the first episode of the show I watched, I fell in love after avoiding it for years
I’ve never been into Steven Universe but it’s amazing how these songs just tug your heart so much.
There is no overstating how good this show is, and this is arguably the best episode. I've never seen so much story in 10 minutes. It's a feat of genius.

If you react to more Steven Universe stuff my song suggestion would be “Love Like You,” “Stronger Than You,” or “Here Comes a Thought” from the actual series. Those or “True Kind of Love” from the movie. They are some of the more emotional and impactful songs from the series and I think they can be enjoyed without needing a whole lot of context to get whats going on.
