    Jordan Peterson? Don't take his big words too seriously, he doesn't have a competent grounding in philosophy to be making the claims he is making... not to mention the reason why he was thrust into the spotlight was for opposing LGBT inclusive legislation. I'm sure he is a competent psychologist, but his normative claims need to be taken with (more than) a grain of salt.

    • @FarzaanBulsara
      @FarzaanBulsara 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Don't lie. He opposed a bill that criminalises certain speech. His opposition to the bill was purely on the grounds of freedom.

    • @jcers
      @jcers 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      “LGBT inclusive legislation”, huh? Bill C-16 is compelled speech, and that violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms’s section on free speech. This is Peterson’s opposition to the bill. It has nothing to do with opposition to trans people

    • @alexanderrogers1103
      @alexanderrogers1103 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@FarzaanBulsara It just so happens the speech in the bill referenced pertains to commonly agreed-upon hate speech, ie. advocating violence or genocide against a group, and discriminating based on gender identity. As much as he is insensitive for doing so, intentionally misgendering people is not part of the bill, and JP's attempts to make himself look like a bad boy criminal in the eyes of the law doesn't add up.

    • @alexanderrogers1103
      @alexanderrogers1103 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jcers Compelled speech... please explain what that means. In mine, and many other's understanding, including those responsible for translating and analyzing legislation, there is nowhere in the bill that says you are compelled to say anything. As I have already stated in a previous response, C-16 does seek to include trans people under the same umbrella that all protected classes exist. If you have a problem with this, then stop trying to hide behind free speech infringement allegations. If you do not want trans and non-binary identifying persons to be protected from hate speech (again, not misgendering, even if intentional) then say that, instead of pretending like this bill will force you to say things you do not want to say; unless what you want to say is classified as hate speech.

    I’m not sure that I’d agree that Jordan Peterson is an intellectual. He’s a pseudo intellectual. That said, you should do a video on science vs pseudoscience sometime. I think it’s quite important to delve into the ethics of science, the scientific method, and scholarly work.

    • @mrsprimo999
      @mrsprimo999 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You may not want to call him an "intellectual", perhaps because he speaks so plainly(?), but he has been able to extrapolate INCREDIBLY insightful theories on human motivations and behaviours based on his decades of practice, so, let's give him that. Please :)

    I love your content man, but it's a bit concerning to see guys like Ben Shapiro and Jordan Peterson just casually thrown into your inspiration lists. These guys aren't good-faith actors, and they only support science and philosophy to the extent that they support their political ends. They've both said awful things about women and lgbt folks. You seem like a switched on guy, but when you spread guys like that around it's being part of the problem

    • @Thisisausername556
      @Thisisausername556 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      "They have both said awful things about women." I don't think I've ever heard Jordan say anything truly negative about women. He's helped countless women both through teaching at university and through his clinical practice. I can't say the same for Ben, as I don't consume much of his content, but Jordan is not some far-right bigot. He's a left-leaning centrist who finds merit in traditions. I don't see him spreading problems at all. I see people who don't care to learn about what he's saying and what he stands for trying to paint him as something he's not to be part of at least one problem though. But that's just my view on the topic. I've learned a lot about how to treat myself better, and by proxy, those around me better just from him alone.

    There is a lot of issue of the idea of people being widely illiterate around that time as the top books were the Bible- which people like to say is for religious reasons -and Shakespeare which is overlooked.
    You also have the church kinda pushing they taught people to read and allowed nuns to go back and teach their kids how to read back then.
    You then have the writer of Dante’s Inferno(if I recall) actually writing stuff in English that boosted his book sales because English was the wider known poor language pretty much because the Greek and Roman: ‘my language is better’ push because writing a book was hard, translating it was pretty hard too.
    Now they didn’t have a printing press back then so books were a rarity and pretty much so was reading, until the printing press was invented which actually had people complain it was ruining jobs and ‘the art of writing a book’
    Similar to our some people today with labor saving devices.

    You can regress key anti-ageing variables and variables such as development of artificial organs, and space travel, etc. To draw conclusion, although it would be in line with “the possibility that all humans won’t necessarily die”, rather than “humans won’t die”. Idk, just think that’s more structured.

    Sad how the science scholars of the Arab World began leaving science behind after Islam took precedence over the Levant. Yes, there were great Muslim polymaths who made contribution to the sciences it declined significantly.

    It is quite ironic that the most popular things on the Internet usually are produced by those with the biggest voice, marketing and skill in rhetoric which is not very different from your single voice in the whole village analogy. We still have that single biased voice, only difference is it is no longer a single individual, but a single entity. A corporation, agency, movement, PR company etc. Furthermore, we can augment your village example by stating that nowadays everybody in the village has a voice, which means everybody has a bias, intention, agenda and what not. And while like you said, hopefully low quality stuff should fall behind, that's not the case. We don't see philosophy, art, culture and science very often on TH-cam's trending page for example.
    Then, let's not forget that content is still not written by AI. It is done by humans for humans. And unless you are dealing with a purely technical documentation, a certain level of bias is unavoidable.
    You are right, we have more choice and good information is more accessible than ever before but it is mixed with a lot of rubbish that needs to be filtered. So good things still remain rare- whether by being few in the past, as seen in your ancient village example or obscured by trash nowadays. The moral is, in both cases, then and now, there has been an effort needed to find and take good information and there always have been the masses who just take whatever is fed to them

      but the lasting works are those that will speak the most truth. I think at least. the trending page unfortunately doesn't correlate to much with that

    About your confusion in 24:00
    David Hume - a very famous philosopher which I’m sure you already know, whom also inspired many great scientists such as Einstein had the exact same confusion. He wrote his thoughts about it in his very famous “problem of induction”. I would have explained the problem in this comment but English is not my native language so... It would be very hard for me. But I do recommend you read some stuff about it because it’s very interesting!
    I also love your channel btw

    I think Inductive reasoning is when you already know the proof to the theorem and you just connect the dots with facts. Deductive reasoning is proving the theorem with separate proofs and facts. In the case of Mathematical Induction, you have to know the Theorem and use Observations and Assumptions to prove the _already proven_ theorem.
