    This Ultra 120 amp is awesome with a good cabinet. I originally got my Peavey Ultra head with a crappy Peavey 4-12 cab, back in 1998ish. Anyway, later in life I put it on top of a Mesa Rectifier 4-12 cab & it sounded flippin awesome!!

    The channel switching into the crunch channel by foot switch actually worked in my favor when I bought mine. The store I bought it from thought it was broken, along with the logo because it wouldn’t change colors. I bought it for $225, plugged the foot switch in and everything worked as it should.

      Had a similar experience. A local record shop had one of these and had a sign on it saying “as is” and that the crunch channel button doesn’t work. Got them down to $300 out the door. Plugged my ultra foot switch into it and works no problem.

      Unbelievable.. your text! I own this Ultra 120, it was my first amp! I also got the cheap cabinet that went with it with the crappy speakers! So, I ended up putting the head with a Marshall 1969 cab & played it all in my band room which was an abandoned bar called the Driftwood Lounge!

    I use a bbe sonic stomp with my ultra plus 120. It really helps open up frequencies and make the cab sound less like there's a blanket over it. I'm running a PVMS cab with two Sheffield 1290s and two vintage 30s. My secret weapon is the amp tweaker defizzerator. They're so hard to find but they're definitely a hidden gem if you can get one. Good demo sir

    Only amp I regret selling was my plus. As a kid I dreamed of it (plus the lights were sick af). The city installed some new power/telecom pole and all my 100w heads picked up massive interference and oscillation. Can’t buy anything over 30 watts now. Wish they would make a mini of this. I’d be all over it…..logo better light up though 😜

    Active EQ doesn't mean that they depend on each other, it means that the pots can boost the signal as well as cut it.

    • @tbonesullivan
      @tbonesullivan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Active EQ's are nice. I think the Carvin X-100B, while nowhere near this gain level, had active knob AND graphic EQs. On the Peavey, looks like the clean channel is a standard passive EQ.

    Never seen that amp before. Sounds a lot like a Marshall dsl! Great vid! I got a stretch of a request for ya Kyle. After that situation with Jarod on tone wars I would love to see you shootout an uberschall twin jet if you can borrow one and shoot it out against your rev green model. They say that the twin jet rivals the original ubers and I’d love to see if that was indeed a fluke with Jarod. I live close to sweetwater and have only heard a twin jet for maybe a minute and it was insane what I heard. Would love to see that shootout! Thanks.

    I see a lot of people love these, I bought one a few years back as my first big boy full sized tube head and I just couldn’t ever really jive with it. Once I bought my 5153 stealth it was like someone cleaned the mud out of my ears, also just recently picked up a Mark V and I can say the comparisons to the Mark series are not even close at least to my ears lol and yes I had it boosted with an OD808 and turned up loud for all the people with an ultra plus who wanna tear me apart, also if you buy a XXX footswitch or any 3 button switch with the Peavey 7 pin connector there are a ton of wiring diagrams online in forums and such that guide you to rewire the XXX switch to work the Ultra Plus that’s what I did hope that helps!

    • @belligerentamateur
      @belligerentamateur  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The reason they get compared to the Mark series is because the original Ultra amp, the Triumph, was based off the Marks at the time but with Peavey's spin on it. The evolved into something totally different though! And yes, I get these not being everyone's cup of tea, and that's totally fine!

      @untoldguitarist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Jake The Ultra and Ultra + heads are very picky with speakers. Believe it or not also tube selection that is installed in the amp itself. I still own a Ultra 120 teal stripe, with Jan Phillips 5881's and Sylvania 12ax7's that were pulled from a 87' VTM 60 head. And it is still to this day one of the best sounding and the most versatile heads I own. With having 3 channels, and built in reverb. With also owning a Soldano Hotrod 100+, Mako Mak 4 pre amp, Randall RM100, Peavey VTM 120, Krank Rev Jr Pro 20 Watt. The 80's and 90's Peavey head's are the best in my opinion.

    I just got one of these as well as a bunch of other older peaveys before they continue to go up in price. Love your videos. How close is this to the xxx ? I wondered if it was redundant to have both? On a side note not to beat a dead horse but I may have missed it. Have you compared a 5150/6505 to the 5150 2/6505+ and how close they are to each other? I hear their is only 2-3 components difference but generally the 5150/6505 is more aggressive.

      Or not , if it's already in ... with Just aggressive picking with straight power chords not pulling up or down on any string that's not string stretch. On Non lock neck guitars especially if you are aggressive fast picking , harsh hard picking or extreme string bending 🔁 which is Metal guitar playing... when you put a string on
      the guitar, and thread it through the hole of tuner peg, eyeball enough string for 4 or 5 wraps, wrap string around the top half of peg 2 times above the string hole, then bend string where it's sticking out of peg hole straight up 90 degrees , then continue with wraps going down below the string hole having at least 2 wraps below and able to start winding the tuner with one hand while holding the peg and string in place with other hand. Once tight, tune it up standard, clip off excess string with a nubb left pointing up still, pull the string upwards at middle of guitar a couple of stiff times, tune it standard again, till it holds good, then tune string up a quarter of a turn over standard do a 1/4 bend at 12th fret a couple of times, tune it back Down a notch below standard then back up to standard 👉always end any kind of tuning going up and stopping 👌to hold the pressure. Stopping on downward turn will hold half as long.
      And finally tighten little screw on top of tuner nobb making it stiff to turn.
      Do that method with all the strings and that sum bich will hold better than a lock with bridge tuners. after a pre-jamm session freshning guitar up tune barely having to turn a string but a bit here and there when guitar has been sitting up for a while. It'll take 20 seconds or less and hold for long time playing and when a string does start to come out while playing it'll be so slight nobody can 'really tell it and you can finish playing cause it can wait for later. 😎🚬
      I have a white explorer too and I can hold the back against my side place picking hand against the body above neck pickup with string ringing out and with fret hand push against back of neck around 1st fret adding more bow dropping the note ringing out super low . Let off and it's snaps right back with strings in perfect tune evertime. And that shit is fun to do and sounds cool mainly with top E string 👉and looks Cool while you're doing it holding guitar straight up and down. Make sure truss rod is just snug tight and that's All.

      My buddies who are in a band always me if they can use my rig, peavey 3120 with pedals and mesa os 4x12. They either ask can they use it for a gig, how’d I get such a tight tone or if I’m willing to sell it. I have a 6534+ that’s crushes the 3120 but its still a nasty amp. Now I’m looking for a ultra plus to add to my peavey collection

    The ultra channel has a red lit peavey logo I thought

    • @belligerentamateur
      @belligerentamateur  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It defaults to Orange on the logo with no footswitch! Was definitely on the Ultra as the Ultra gain and volume knobs along with the ultra switch Is what I used to adjust volume and gain levels. the crunch channel on this amps is both thinner and brighter with less gain by a good margin than the ultra on this amp as well, you'd notice if it wre the crunch channel!

    The prices on the older Peavey stuff have gone way up lately. Like everything else I guess. Was looking into getting a Triple X but I can't pay 700$ to 800$ for one of those. The world has gone mad!

    • @belligerentamateur
      @belligerentamateur  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I totally agree with this. No reason for the prices to be that high, there is no shortage of these amps!

      I paid $250 for a XXX that came with an old peavey 5150 4x12. The guy thought it was broken because of a microphonic power tube. I had it retubed and traded it for a baritone guitar and kept the cab for a couple of years

    just picked one of these up. my logo is off center like yours. you know what the deal w that is?

    • @thriftsnriffs291

      The peavey logo is screwed to a flat black.. thing that is then stuck to the front of the amp via double sided tape. You could undo the staples for the grill on the front. But what I just did is back the two little black screws holding the peavey logo out enough that I could grab it with my fingertips pulled up a little and then was able to gently slide it back into place and just tried to press it back down. Would probably benefit from using some better adhesive but undoing that staples for the grill seems like too much work

      No not selectable without the footswitch but it's still "live" so you can dial it off and on if you want ...also if on, it's on for all channels,, I had no footswitch for mine so Iade one.

    People raised by the internet are worth punching theirselves in the face repeatedly being triggered by capital letters.
    If you're 🤔 thinking of being In the METAL Player Tribe , 🆘 👉 It aint meant for little girls 🥀. Toughen up,
    💪, The Old School 80s Thrash Guitar Playing Maniacs that raised me starting at age 12, would guzzle Whiskey, throw lit cigarettes at you if they happen to be smoking one when you hic-upped on a riff, before you left they made sure to eat your lunch with their guitar playing everytime, making you watch closely to show you how its done till they were done playing, pushing you to go home and practice instead of crying to your mommy, teach you even if you never held guitar before and laughed if you asked... well how much ya charge for lessons Dude, would teach you HOW to teach yourself getting better at guitar, wasn't impressed by high dollar equipment with a lame guitar playing owner, cause they had it too but did it justice, one of them took classes on music reading with Classical Guitar and eventually could look at anything he never played before piece of classical music stacked up thick with notes and play it correctly 👈 All just to be even badder ass at Metal guitar and understanding a guitars capabilities,
    His name is Nick Wheeler and I promise you this...You don't want none ... he won't even look down at his guitar one time playing, while he's looking at your face 🤘 showing you how Badass you ain't ... 😎🚬
    P.S. if a string comes out of tune even just a little bit after just 10 minutes of playing with out 1 single hard bend up or fast shaking tremolo bend , and presumingly you did a fresh tune and strum before video,
    Or not , if it's already in ... with Just aggressive picking with straight power chords not pulling up or down on any string that's not string stretch.
