So fucking good. Got a bit emotional watching this with regard to dreams, struggles, and ultimately not giving up. Marea you are amazing. Thank you for being you.
GUYS! Please add more artist with this project - "Between The Beats" ! It's a great glimpse in the life of the dj's and music scene overall !! That's a great idea ,whoever came up with it in your team!!! CONGRATS! LOVED IT!
She is a beautiful human being. Just saw her a few days ago at the Dekmantel festival in Amsterdam going b2b with Mike Servito. Never give up and one day you will be where you are supposed to be.
I am at work at my desk crying! This is me...What she talking about and her experiences are me....I been deejaying for my whole life. She is so beautiful and inspiring....I am soooooo glad I saw this story..
I met Marea about 14 years ago and we have lost touch since then, and I have to say I am so freakin impressed. This was also a really well done documentary! Play on!
I LOVE her sound! I watched her set from SONAR 2016 and she absolutely rocked it. Right there and then I knew she would be one of my favs. Its great to see that after all the struggle and all the hard work she's getting her just due. Keep doing what you doing girl!
"Any of us that are lucky enough to be a part of underground dance music, we do have a responsibility to share certain values about race, class, gender, economic equality, everything. All of those things are built into dance music." - This is so right, thank you Marea.
So inspirational! Thank you for this. I saw her DJ in Cologne a year or so ago, and as usual she delivered an amazing set. We need more authentic, real people like this in a scene that's often oversaturated with pretentious, macho, pseudo-intellectual assholes. We still believe!
She is absolutely right on the implications of more women taking leadership roles and more involved creative processes. Something that we all should be looking forward to
Wow... I really needed to see this. Just moved to Chicago from Ohio a week ago to become a DJ, and I already feel I'm failing somehow. She's really not kidding at 8:14 . This is exactly the kick in the ass I need right now.
14:35 - 15:25 "Visibility does matter... if nothing else, if we grow up in a world where little girls have seen a black president, and a woman president. That is gonna change, regardless of anybody's policies and what you think about them, that is gonna change the way that those little girls view the whole world. And, the next generation will have many many many options for both who grew up in that universe where that was possible. Because visibility is everything. And if you haven't had it, you don't know how important it is."
Way to go Girl, you have an amazing personality and after watching this program, I can honestly say I'm a fan and I hope you make it down to New Orleans....
she's great because she's so different than all the other woman dj's that are in the spot light right now, and she's so fucking humble! i hope i'll see her live one night!
Such a great and inspiring story. This is what dance music is all about. we are lucky to have such a talented DJ that can not only play with the best but can articulate the message that continues to bring so many people from all walks of life to the dance floor. Thank You for working so hard to keep us grooving!
1995, Lexington, Kentucky. I'm DJing at Club DV8. I'm dropping some heavy jungle biz, and there was this florescent light that kept flickering in the back of the room. I see this bright orange hair. Later on, I find out it's Marea. She was at pretty much every party I was at, and would help out with mutual friends and promoters. She hasn't really changed much, except her hair color! Midwest pride right there!
Amazing, and i relate so damn much with all what she said, the struggle is real, we don't get any younger, and the will to not give up, i too have that little voice and that's exactly what keeps me going.....25 years now and still fighting....
Thank you for this. Started up my dream to DJ again at the tender age of forty-five... Cant go back, now. Thanks for the inspiration and pointers. Don't stop until you get enough, Marea. Big respect.
Anxiety and depression is an epidemic in djs because real musicians have to compete with popularity contests and shady drug dealers wearing the guise of promoters, artists and venue owners. Female artists especially have to deal with the most vile behaviors. This woman rocks! Thank you for sharing your story.
Until watching this I’d thought being an international DJ would be exciting but this looks so gruelling. Huge respect to her. What a work ethic and inspiration.
Fantastic video about a fantastic person! Love The Black Madonna. She's one of the few DJs I love just watching DJ. Her attitude is infectious. You go girl! (sorry I missed you in Denver, but my boys that ran the show said you were insanely cool!)
Awesome. I really regret not going to see her play at Hot Mass last year.. I'll def be going if you come back, dear! A few of my friends that went said you were amazing. :-)
what a joke to make such a statement! I bet she has another little case full of illegal drugs too and most deffo drinks alcohol as she said about hangovers.. so she doesn't take her well being all that seriously does she? Don't get me wrong i'm not against illegal drugs or alcohol but would not claim i take my well being very seriously just because i take a shed load of prescription and over the counter drugs.
The part where she touches upon 'lack of sleep thinning the wall' between a satisfactory state of mental health and when SHIT turns bad is so true. Hats off, like MCDE,for talking about this shit
I wish Resident Advisor would also cover Hip Hop / Left Field Beat producers like Flying Lotus, AFTA-1, Mndsgn, Madlib for this wonderful web series (Between The Beats). Honestly this episode is so inspiring. Happy for the Black Madonna. More Power.
May be over-prescribed, but honestly a lot of people do need and benefit from those drugs. Anxiety is a bitch and drugs may be necessary. Better to take ambien and sleep than not sleep, especially if you have an anxiety disorder. I suppose it is crazy how many Americans take these drugs. I just want to mention that even if they're over-prescribed, doesn't mean a lot of people don't need them (and I'm sure a travelling dj w/ anxiety especially would need them). Also taking ibuprofen for a hangover is no big deal (as long as you don't take it constantly). It's a painkiller but it's not a narcotic.
I think this was to show her "real persona" and I really admire her for that. Lots of people take Xanax or another kind of benzos and don't tell anyone or hide the situation. There's lots of people, and I include myself, living with anxiety. You can work on it, but sometimes you need this rescue pill to "save you". Thank you, Black Madonna!
I found it funny how she says like "I take care of my well being" by taking all those pills. Taking care of your well being is actually NOT taking all that crap, excercising and staying away from junk food. You can tell how bad her health is just by hearing her speak (she has to pause constantly and breathe heavily).... btw I almost died from taking ambien.
So fucking good. Got a bit emotional watching this with regard to dreams, struggles, and ultimately not giving up. Marea you are amazing. Thank you for being you.

Very inspiring story. It's refreshing to see someone so thankful, genuine, and hard-working achieve their dreams.

Economic equality built into dance music? I guess she shares her DJ fees with the people who clean the toilets... oh I guess not.
So inspirational! Thank you for this. I saw her DJ in Cologne a year or so ago, and as usual she delivered an amazing set. We need more authentic, real people like this in a scene that's often oversaturated with pretentious, macho, pseudo-intellectual assholes. We still believe!
very inspiring! thank you for this
that FIRE in hear eyes. true passion.
she totally deserves everything! U GO GURL

Loveliest most humble woman ever, amazing to see her! Can't wait for her to buzz back to Dublin again! :D
Jaysus when she dropped ejeca's trance wax 7 in district 8 in July, fuck me. What a night
She literally said "I couldn't fuck up if I tried"
Please more episodes
She is absolutely right on the implications of more women taking leadership roles and more involved creative processes. Something that we all should be looking forward to
2 years later she has become one of the most quoted Dj's out there. She's freaking awesome

This is the best between the beats story, one of the best dj success stories I've ever heard.
Amazing, and i relate so damn much with all what she said, the struggle is real, we don't get any younger, and the will to not give up, i too have that little voice and that's exactly what keeps me going.....25 years now and still fighting....

"I take my well-being very seriously" Proceeds to name off a medley of pharmaceuticals.
Yes, because medicine actually has a place in treating illness.
+djshiva you mean suppressing symptoms

"I take my well-being very seriously"... should probably lose some weight.

That thought sprung to mind immediately...she's over 20Kg overweight !!!
SHE IS SOOOOO AMAZING on so many different levels! :)
Hope good things happen to her. Love her music 🤘🏻❤️🇺🇸👌
She did the best set at SONAR 2016 by far. Awesome!

Love your story!!
08:00 ...crazy... how many ppl in the US take xanax! also ambien !?!?
2016's aspirina
is it important?
May be over-prescribed, but honestly a lot of people do need and benefit from those drugs. Anxiety is a bitch and drugs may be necessary.
