Four years ago, Marea Stamper was ready to give up. Since her early 20s she'd been determined to make it as a DJ and a producer, and after years of doggedly pursuing this goal-teaching herself to play, taking every gig she could get, moving to Chicago from her hometown in Kentucky-she was certain she had failed.

Things have changed immeasurably since then. Not long after that hopeless moment, Stamper got a job as the talent buyer at smartbar, Chicago's best underground club. One thing led to another, and before she knew it she was traveling every weekend, playing gigs at many of the best clubs and festivals in the world. This was thanks to her personal resolve and her style as a DJ-party-rocking but smart, often blowing through disco, techno, EBM and '80s pop in a single set. But there was something deeper at play as well, which eventually made her a kind of house music icon. By rising through the ranks as an undiluted version of herself-an outspoken, queer-identifying liberal and feminist with a habit of sweatily rocking out in the booth-she gives the world of dance music a much-needed jolt, and her fans love her for it. As we followed her on a string of gigs across Europe, we found her in the midst of a whirlwind, reeling from her chaotic new life but confidently charging through it, and still pinching herself that it was really happening.

Economic equality built into dance music? I guess she shares her DJ fees with the people who clean the toilets... oh I guess not.

I LOVE her sound! I watched her set from SONAR 2016 and she absolutely rocked it. Right there and then I knew she would be one of my favs. Its great to see that after all the struggle and all the hard work she's getting her just due. Keep doing what you doing girl!
So inspirational! Thank you for this. I saw her DJ in Cologne a year or so ago, and as usual she delivered an amazing set. We need more authentic, real people like this in a scene that's often oversaturated with pretentious, macho, pseudo-intellectual assholes. We still believe!

She is absolutely right on the implications of more women taking leadership roles and more involved creative processes. Something that we all should be looking forward to

Wow... I really needed to see this. Just moved to Chicago from Ohio a week ago to become a DJ, and I already feel I'm failing somehow. She's really not kidding at 8:14 . This is exactly the kick in the ass I need right now.
Anxiety and depression is an epidemic in djs because real musicians have to compete with popularity contests and shady drug dealers wearing the guise of promoters, artists and venue owners. Female artists especially have to deal with the most vile behaviors. This woman rocks! Thank you for sharing your story.

1995, Lexington, Kentucky. I'm DJing at Club DV8. I'm dropping some heavy jungle biz, and there was this florescent light that kept flickering in the back of the room. I see this bright orange hair. Later on, I find out it's Marea. She was at pretty much every party I was at, and would help out with mutual friends and promoters. She hasn't really changed much, except her hair color! Midwest pride right there!
Way to go Girl, you have an amazing personality and after watching this program, I can honestly say I'm a fan and I hope you make it down to New Orleans....

I bet she has another little case full of illegal drugs too and most deffo drinks alcohol as she said about hangovers.. so she doesn't take her well being all that seriously does she? Don't get me wrong i'm not against illegal drugs or alcohol but would not claim i take my well being very seriously just because i take a shed load of prescription and over the counter drugs.

Amazing, and i relate so damn much with all what she said, the struggle is real, we don't get any younger, and the will to not give up, i too have that little voice and that's exactly what keeps me going.....25 years now and still fighting....
