It's so great to see Los Angeles get some love for its music scene. I've been here awhile and due to lifestyle changes don't get to experience musical art the way I used to... So I didn't even know about Dublab. So thanks for making this about our city, thanks for showing LA love and thanks for continuing this series... I love it.
I lived in LA for the past 10 years and never had people around me complaining you obviously don't live in Los Angeles or if you do you just surrounding yourself with the wrong people
just spent 6 months in LA and here are some pro tips/events/promoters not mentioned in this documentary: for house & techno check out made to move in chinatown, low, into the woods, incognito, & lights down low. for jungle/dnb (which is actually massive in LA) check out big booty bass, hidden jungle, lostkawz, concrete jungle, respect, drumslinga, and xcellerated. surely i'm missing a bunch more. other cool parties can be found at 19hz dot info and restless nites. enjoy!
I remember LA in 93-97 during the height of Rave culture...it was like any big city that had mega raves, small raves, and the undergrounds. Frankly LA was amazing and I went to raves in NYC, San Fran, and Chicago. Each had its own spirit but the one thing that made LA different from the rest of them were the badass Desert Raves thrown by the Moontribe! Those were the spirit of real raves.
you got one shot in extremely familiar with, and it's right on E Cesar Chavez in Boyle Heights (where the king taco is). i've been raised on the other side of the scene, i was born into a non-musical and poor family. it's weird seeing documentaries like these because i am not familiar with these images of LA. this isn't my LA. and that's awesome - to a degree. i wish there was more representation for the other side of downtown, in East LA, Montebello, Monterey Park, etc. I don't even know what's going on over here, but i'd love to find out more and help make waves for my LA. it's pretty wonderful that everyone has their own perspective of this huge county. i'm glad this exists. thanks !
Berlin is deep and free and real. Its such a shame that other big cities in the world are lacking the freedom they have in Berlin and some other european cities.
Well this is def my favourite episode of Real Scenes. So inspiring! And again i have discovered another new artists and things to watch (maybe im kinda sad that i didnt see Delroy Edwards there). I wish that my city (Ostrava, Czech Republic) has something similar.
Big thank you to Resident Advisor for giving the world different perspectives about the immense scale and power of electronic music. This is what we live for, this is what we die for. Don't stop!
Thanks for covering LA. Moved from LDN to SF and been struggling to find the same electronic music scene here. This sums up what I've experienced perfectly, everything is hidden due to the damn 2am closing time!! When you find it, its so great.
His first comment when he says you're in a box. That's your choice. You can choose to live in an area where everything is located close to you or live somewhere where u have to drive to go where you want. It's a big city but you don't have to go three cities over to get a cheeseburger when theirs a burger place two blocks away. If you live in downtown u can easily go to Santa Monica. North. East. South all the way to Long Beach. Of course if u live in the hills u can afford to have a car. And about the "fake people" the funny thing is all those people are east coast transplants. The real people live in the south east and north LA who been residents for decades. Jut speaking the truth from someone who has generations of families living in LA and was raised in South Central LA.
There were parties all the time in the late 90's - early 00's. Downtown LA had Orion's and there were crazy desert and LA Forest parties happening frequently. Once the Rave act was enacted as Law in 03, a lot of it died down or went commercial.
Good documentary. Was hoping you'd guys show more of the hip hop and deep house scene in LA but there is only so much you can capture in 30 mins. To those who want to trash talk on LA, please come here and visit the city before saying something. Like every city in the world there are pros and cons.
Hello there. Stumbled upon this vid as part of my research. I’m from Tel Aviv, relocating to LA next week. Although Covid has other plans for ravers, I still wonder, as a person coming from the European nightlife-rave culture, where in LA can I find clubs/productions that throw genuine underground electronic music events?? Need me some electronic goodies, electro, techno, acid, none of that comercial tech house BS!!
Check out OBSERVE, DIRTY EPIC, INCOGNITO, 6AM Group, there is nothing going on now during the pandemic but once the dancefloor is safe again I’m positive these crews will Be the most active in the real of YRU underground techno, acid, house and so on. If you don’t want main stream tech house then stay away from the big clubs in hollywooof
Thanks +RA for these documentaries! I grew up in LA, and support the NY underground scene. Super fascinating to get a look at what's brewing back home.
I am from Johannesburg South Africa and I have always wanted to have a reason to visit Los Angeles and I got excited when I saw this post. I am still not convinced about getting on a 25 hours flight to see the city of fame. I feel like its already done on tv and there's not much of a reason for me to go visit. this docu was open ended for me, I thought they would explore layers we dont know about this city but they only highlighted one. I guess L.A doesn't have depth and every layer is just as conceited as the next and they all kind of dont mix. Here in Johannesburg everyone is in everyone faces, House music scene here is massive and everyone parties with everyone.
been here my whole life I done it all from running a massive sound system in the rave years to just running a small DJ gig L.A. is very diverse I can count many different types of crowds anything from college to ghetto but no matter what there is one thing that makes everyone do the same thing at any crowd ghattering and that is the power of MUSIC no matter who you are if there is good music vibes in the air you will twitch
I'm flying into LA next week from Texas (for the David Gilmour of Pink Floyd concert) .. Wednesday to Saturday.. I'll prob be able to catch ... DJ Three (wed), Zimmer (thurs), Detroit Swindle(Fri), Cherushii (Live) and Dahlia(Fri) during my time there.
Andrew Hogge has no clue what he's talking about ; the acid house and RAVE movements were the dominant scenes in the 90s which includes early techno like Altern 8, Human Resource and Quadrophonia - taking place primarily in large warehouses (downtown) throughout Los Angeles including Compton and Long Beach. The contemporary techno scene began to flourish in 1998 ; punk died in 84' and is now regrouping in it's original home of East Los Angeles!
I lived in LA since I was born till the age of 13 then moved to Pennsylvania. LA will always be my hometown and I have my happiest memories in the time that I lived there but I don't think I would like to raise my kids there
i can't wait to explore this amazing underground scene, its just my favorite, just dance my night away with awesome beats and music. wow I just moved to Southern Cali, so this should be exciting. i hate normal clubs with all those fake people too.
Being from LA, the most annoying thing is seeing a documentary with people who aren't even from here but just moved here and claim LA. This ain't Oklahoma, ur not from here.
apparently the point of this video was for people to think of other towns in a segment type format to repeat this process but only for other cities which kind of seems like something that would happen in most peoples minds.
Britt je. LolZ - i like the way you threw Nijmegen casually in there.. (you're not Dutch, eh ?~) ~ funny 'cause my Deutsch/ American homey has gotten mad into the techno- dance culture while a student up in Holland.. @michael.tepe - the Bay Area was where I discovered the underground music scene, after Chicago.. ,~]
Los angeles is so diverse I wish you guys would touch upon the great food and culture Ie; korea town, Alhambra SGV, east los/boyle heights, south LA/Compton/watts!..etc
+Filippo Bordigato Yes it is. He was being interviewed on dublab about the Jaco Pastorius documentary he was involved with. dublab.com/stefan-biedermann-wguest-robert-trujillo-jaco-pastorius-special-interview-11-19-15/
Once again, a good piece of work from RA. Still, even though the whole 'scission' thing between the celebrity and superficial image this city suffers from and the growing underground scene is very well outlined, my main feeling was that RA did not much try to get out of their comfort zone. A bit of local underground artists, a few beautiful images of hidden parties taking place in unexpected spots, a little touch of spirituality and we are good to go. My thought is they could have gone a little bit deeper, I don't feel like knowing much more of the origins of this scene, and directions it is taking. Oh, and yeah, hipsters everywhere.
Don't get me wrong, LA is special to me in its role as a big part of my early 20's. However, most of the people in this video embody what I don't like about the city. So pretentious, so cliche, so lacking in substance and guts. I mean, if everyone stands for their own, unique thing, does anyone stand for anything?
fucking love this series wish i got to see this side of LA but i know nobody there just like LA, my city Melbourne isn't known for its nightlife but i think it has one of the best scenes in the world and would love to see it on this series
I just hate how they focus on the stereotypical ass places. People born and raised here can barely afford to party in DTLA or Hollywood. Show what Los Angeles actually looks like. I get really pseudo intellectual, pretentious, "look how deep I am" vibes from this video tbh
These documentaries are so inspiring... Always looking forward to hear/see more! Thank you for this!
It's so great to see Los Angeles get some love for its music scene. I've been here awhile and due to lifestyle changes don't get to experience musical art the way I used to... So I didn't even know about Dublab. So thanks for making this about our city, thanks for showing LA love and thanks for continuing this series... I love it.
This really made me feel like I was in LA, and by that I mean listening to a bunch of people from LA complaining about LA.
I lived in LA for the past 10 years and never had people around me complaining you obviously don't live in Los Angeles or if you do you just surrounding yourself with the wrong people
And at what point in this video was anyone complaining? Lol
Los ANGELES is like a CHOOSE your own Adventure Book.
SO TRUE!!!
True you could go up or you can go way down your choice..
Watching these is a convenient low cost way of seeing what's on the other side without needing money to travel. I love it.

you never had a rave culture and you will never have one. It was underground and only small venues, that's it. Don't overhype.
you got one shot in extremely familiar with, and it's right on E Cesar Chavez in Boyle Heights (where the king taco is). i've been raised on the other side of the scene, i was born into a non-musical and poor family. it's weird seeing documentaries like these because i am not familiar with these images of LA. this isn't my LA. and that's awesome - to a degree. i wish there was more representation for the other side of downtown, in East LA, Montebello, Monterey Park, etc.

There is no other place in the world like Berlin, Im so happy that I get to call it my home.

Im from Berlin and I've been to LA a few times, hate it. Too many superficial people who only care about themselves. Berlin is the complete opposite.
18:10 -- any other disco biscuits fans love seeing the jp8000 when he's talking about Music being the connector and healer???
Do Chicago next, the birthplace of house music. Plenty of underground parties here every weekend too.

I honestly never had the slightest desire to visit LA, until now.
Glad to see Santi interviewed in this!
Matthewdavid had me cracking up, seems like a really chill guy though! Great docu
cool. how do you not include anything/anyone from the beats scene though? brainfeeder, low end theory, soulection?
