Why the 4th Generation Toyota 4Runner is an Off-Road Cult Classic

  • A friend of mine who shall not be named - Kent - has me looking for an '05 or '06 4Runner for him - in white only. His enthusiasm for them made me decide to buy one that came across our path in the incorrect silver color, just to understand why he wanted this thing so bad, and why they appear to have a strong cult following driving the prices up.
After a couple of weekends with the truck, and a lot of reading up, I think I'm starting to get it. Watch the video to see what I learned.

Best Machine I think I'm keeping forever...bought it used at a auction from a Toyota dealer with a warranty at the time 11yrs old for $11,900,
with 79k miles. Now with 145,000 miles it's now breaking in. 12mpg in the city premium BP fuel only. My wife loves it. she's about 4'11 in height
and the body on frame raises the floor making her even more comfortable. Parts are still available from the Dealer, which I've learn is a must.
To this day I've only changed a few aftermarker alternaters. Since putting the dealers alternater the truck runs even better. A true GEM.
Maybe some day I can afford the new one. for now she's good. long comment i've ever left on youtube. lol

I had an '04 sport in 2013 with 103K on it (wrecked it- dagger, I know), and I'm looking at an '06 Sport with 130K right now. You hit the nail on the head with why these babies are a cult classic. For the few years I owned the '04 it was a true beast- got me through deep snow and mild off-roading with no issues. Despite being a proper "truck", it handled the city with such grace. It's one of those rare vehicles that is very capable without being pretentious. It won't knock your socks off with luxury add-ons like some "fake" trucks and hi-tech vehicles will try to do today, but all of the features of the truck simply just work and work well. Almost any truck or car lover, regardless of brand loyalty, can have respect for the 4Runner. It's just a no BS machine. Even in 2019, I want another 4th gen. Excellent review btw.

I have an 06’ V6 SR5 with a very rare TRD Supercharger. Was very hard to find and get installed, but absolutely love the increased gains in HP and Torque it gave me. By all means was not a cheap decision, but I would do it all over again if I could. I of course upgraded the headers, exhaust, pulley, and air intake to get the maximum out of the setup. It was powerful to begin with! Love my 4Runner! #YotaGang

I sold it to get a 2007 BMW X5, and I although I like the sheer "haul ass" quality of the BMW, the overall trouble-free ownership of the 4Runner is second to none... It trully is an AMAZING vehicle, especially the 2005 vintage.

Built on the same platform as the international land cruiser prado. The land cruiser is an icon and this 4runner is of the same pedigree and just as indestructible. The 4.7 that came optional with the 4th gen is one of the greatest engines ever built. In 09 they came with a true rear locking differential. When you start to add up all the characteristics of these trucks you can understand why people love them so much

I enjoyed your take on the 4Runner. I live in Pa, and I just bought an 06 4Runner that only now has 65,000 miles on it. I got it about 4 months ago with 62,800 miles on it. It's the Sport Edition in Gray. I love the look, and even though the hood scoop isn't functional, it looks really good.
I changed out the XReas Suspension and put in new Coils and put Bilstein 5100's all around. It's a much better ride and handles much better too.
Unfortunately, even though your's has more miles, it's much cleaner and doesn't have the issues we have up North with the salt. I want to treat the undercarriage, but not sure yet what to do about it.
Btw. in the back seat, the center console has a place to put a garbage bag in it. You just lift up the sides of the console in the back. If you don't know about it, you'll figure it out. Enjoy your 4Runner.

Rock solid reliability, 4wd on the fly, roll down rear window, and so easy to modify; fox 2.0 shocks, FJ rear springs, tint, and some bar lights. Crushes snow, get 22mpg at 70mph. And it can easily pull just about anything you’d ever desire. The 6 is great as well but there are lots of 6 suvs which can adequately do that. You have a great media voice. Also if you pull off the front passenger headrest , you can lay the seat all the way back and it makes a nice bed .
The Frames will rust bad in the rustbelt .You have to keep it well oiled or washed off in the winter if they use lots of salt .
Also , The V8 motor ( 4.7 ) has the starter located underneath the intake manifold and a rubber belt that needs to be changed ( unlike the 4.0 v6 )

Never had a severe issue with this vehicle except that stupid cracked dash board issue.
    My 04’ V6 SR5 4WD only has 94,000 miles.
Manufactured in Japan so really if you can keep one keep it. Toyota soon will only be making only their GR line and upper luxury line in Japan, the remaining of their manufacturing their vehicles lines is being moved to Canada and Mexico.

I JUST BOUGHT a white 2004 SR5 4Runner 48 hours ago with 253,000 miles on it, but it looks like it has less than 40,000. I plan to double the mileage before considering a new vehicle, and that will probably be another 4Runner. It rides so well that it's hard to imagine that it has a quarter million miles on it already.

    • @DARIVSARCHITECTVS

@@jennaelliott5915 I paid $4000. I did not take it in for inspection. I did inspect the underside, and found 80% of the original paint on all components, with very light surface rust on the rest. The previous owner's Uncle owned the vehicle, and it was used for long distance commutes from AZ to PA and FL, so most mileage was highway. The tires, shocks, and left catalytic converter were replaced and timing chain inspected recently, but the right catalytic converter was no good, resulting in VSC TRAC and TRAC CTRL idiot lights being on, with traction control thus being disabled. A new $840 catalytic converter solved that. The top surfaces of the white paint are matte from sun bleaching, and the hood needs repainting, but other than that, the truck is tip-top. This was a local Craigs List purchase. I'm in MN, and the truck was from AZ. With so little aging on the paint and no serious underside rust, this truck was a bargain. I absolutely love it. I'm getting 20.1 mph, as read on the dash, using hard rubbered 17" Mastercraft Courser HSX Tour tires that came with it. They slip some on snow and ice, so I have to be cautious in corners in 2WD. Aside from the paint maintenance, the truck is pretty much restored with everything working. I could tell you a few things to watch for when buying one if you like.

Pretty cool video! But I disagree with the v8 not being far apart from the v6 in terms of power. I own a 2005 v8 and the power difference is pretty significant. Even with a 3 inch lift and 33 inch tires it will get up and go no problem. You really feel the difference with 330lbs of torque in the v8 compared to the v6 280lbs of torque. And v8's hp being 270 compared to 240hp. And to top it off there is not a huge weight difference between the two. I'd say go for a v8, but either one is a good option, you can't beat Toyota reliability and capability!
