"so much room for customization!" *Uses MX Browns*
@stillFLiP Nothing wrong with liking cherry MX Browns, but I would encourage you to look into other brands if you are going to buy a keyboard. I personally don't like MX Browns or MX blues and much prefer kailh box switches. Linus' choice of switches was funny to me because it was all about customization yet he chose the most generic switch on the market.
@stillFLiP remember, just because cherry is the most popular doesn't mean they're the best.
@stillFLiP mx browns are like the most generic switch in the world. they aren't bad, but I encourage you to check out different brands.
@stillFLiP Gateron Browns are significantly better than MX Browns, but they're still low tier. If you want a non clicky tactile, I suggest you check out the Zealios v2. Massdrop (drop) is currently running a sale for them at a very good price
Edit: 62g Zealios is the same-ish weight as a 45g Brown
@stillFLiP even if you just want to type, I recommend looking into linear switch keyboards. Brown switches have such less tactility that it feels like a linear switch with dust stuck in it anyways. Try gateron yellows, they're really smooth.
"satisfying tactile bump of MX brown"
Lmao, what bump? 😂💀
the only bump I can feel is, when I literally try to press one buttom as soft as possible. On normal writing they are basically scratchy linears.
The bump he is talking about is the bump of me hitting my head on the wall after hearing/ feeling this garbage
Only way I can do it is if my finger is at a 0 degree angle. Has to be perfectly straight.

For anyone wondering, the GK64 is not a well designed board. Adding arrow keys to the 60% layout makes for odd rows and key sizes (like the small r shift key). Also it has no pcb mountable stab holes for the Left shift. Also the left shift is 2u size, so again non standard. Also as Linus found out, if you're using a hot swap board... check the pins are straight first.
Also anyone wondering about cost. You can build these things for WAY cheaper. The Tina case is a pretty expensive case, there are cheaper aluminium or wood options. Or even cheaper plastic options. Linus used Cherry switches, and there are way better value for money switches out there from Gateron and Kailh (seriously, Cherry does not mean the best, just because it's the original). The MX switch top removal tool can be made with a couple of binder clips and some pliers, and Linus paid top money for those springs.
However, yes custom boards can cost more money (although sometimes you can build interesting things on a budget), but the reason why so many of us do it is because you can get exactly what you want out of a keyboard, and when you start looking at the variety of switches, layouts, styles, keyboard sizes and all these other things available, you will start to realise there are far more typing experiences out there than what you get with some stock prebuilt board with some cherry switches in them.
Again Linus or his writers kinda misrepresented/didn't go all the way to explain custom mechanical keyboards.
Well as much as I saw you will probably spend the 150$ for europeans a complete catastrophy since the suff gets shipped/produced in america and tax is high. Plus there are no options with the numberblock. Sure Linus went with some high priced options there
I'm thinking of building one and am considering the Satan GH60. Are there any PCBs that don't require soldering? Sorry if it's an amateur question
Get dz60 instead, its got rgb underglow, available in usb type c, and supports more layout

Putting in my input, without the RIDICULOUSLY PRICED case, various cherry springs, and getting non cherry switches; the price goes down to $130. Not any cheap budget keyboard for sure, but definitely lower than the one in this video. Also, you can get a kit of this keyboard with an aluminum case, cherry switches, and keycaps for $165. Just saying, this video doesn't serve justice for beginners with a under $100 price tag in mind.
Yeah, they definitely WAY overweighed the pricing. The $150ish price range a standard 60% kit costs is way more approachable and practical than the $300+ they found.
im using the reddragon kumara k552 but removed all the switches with Kailh BOX Heavy Blue, TaiHao Keycaps, all within a custom wooden case I made myself. BTW The keyboard is still expensive af compared to custom ergonomic keyboards they reviewed.
Definitely like most things this is all opinionated, but for beginners who are interested in the hobby and want to make a keyboard, this video makes it kind of intimidating with the price tag
You can also get the ikbc mf 87. Building your keyboard is only really useful if you are putting keys you can't buy prebuild. There are high end pre builds at a very good price, as i said the ikbc and also the leopold PD line with double shot pbt keycaps.
Getting prebuilt is also totally a viable option also. Looking at the iKBC, it's a solid keyboard for 2/3 of the price shown in the video

Who the heck needs a stinkin warranty if you build something like this? If something breaks you just repair it, no need to ship it thousands of miles away.
If the connector of your PCB breaks off, then you better have good soldering skills. Those things are not easy to replace.
They can be annoying to solder, yes, but that's normally not covered by any warranty, anyway, haha.
What i meant was that you dont need a warranty for the whole keyboard, if it fails, you can probably tell why, because you built it. If it's the board what fails, and it's not something misuse-related, i'm sure it does have a warranty, specially the une Linus uses here, which you can strip clean after using it since it has solderless connections.

Just look up any soldering tutorial for mechanical keyboard switches. I would say definite lost opportunity to try more niche switches like zelios or box switches.
8BitLlama God, I love box switches.
I find soldering fun. Like really fun.
What's the difference in price when soldering yourself?
Hardly any difference. You just give yourself more options in terms of pcb's which means more layouts/features. Hot swap pcb's, like the one he used, aren't too common. The pcb he bought was $39 while there's another 60% layout, from the same website, that's $33. The $33 one lacks per key rgb, but does have rgb underglow. If your worried about price, I would say Linus spent more than he had to. You may have already figured that out from other comments though.
As foshiz97 said, the price is not the issue but rather the availability. I know of like 2 or 3 hot swap PCBs thats easy to get a hold of, and all of them are non-standard in some way. The one used in the video has a pretty strange layout. While it is nice that it supports arrow key-cluster while still being 60% size, that means that the left-shift is only 2 units long. This severely limits the options for key cap sets, as most have the standard 2.5 unit shift key. If you know what switch you want and dont plan to change it, its better to just get another PCB and solder it. If you on the other hand like to change switches often, hot swap might be worth it despite the layout.

As a custom keyboard fanatic I would like to point out that it is an understatement to say that Custom keyboard's are expensive. It CAN get expensive, but you have great starting options that will still make the typing experience so much better compared to retail keyboards. I would say you can kind of get away with a keyboard that is less than 100 USD total but you are probs going to have to put in some time to either learn how to solder or spend a bit more money in a hot swappable board. But all in all, you can get away with ordering a pretty cheap custom keyboard and the typing experience will be miles above any retail keyboard.

tbh the thing about warranty, if you build it, you proabbly know how to fix it (or at least you should be able to find the problem)
yeah, BUT you'll probably have to spend money to replace something broken or burnt out
Actually, nope! Most customs almost never die, and if they do, the parts to be replaced are usually just a couple $$. Most of the time you can fix your problems by fixing a couple stupid mistakes you made when you originally made the board. The point is that the quality is magnitudes greater than most prebuilt boards.
i mean, if i built one i would make sure to get a few extra parts for the parts that can break.(basically everything but the case and buttons, probably the pcb)

Invidious Ignoramus, I have both, aside from needing to clip the feet off the Cherry to make them feel sharp, they're virtually identical.
>custom 60%

@@aretard7995 late reply but for how much he spent on it, he should've went straight to Zealios
Candren or gateron
@@Candrenlol late reply but he could of spent 1/2 the money and got alpacas and 205g0
@@Plane. or this but linus prefers tactile over linears. I, however, love my linears and I personally would've went in this direction (or with gateron black inks)
I feel like every LTT keyboard video is meant specifically to target glarses
>custom mechanical keyboards
>:cherry: mx brown
Like... Really?
could've gone for zealios or gaterons at the very least
Kailh box switches for a lot less
if you're spending $400, may as well get some zealios
Zeelio zeelio give me the feelio
>using meme arrows outside of 4ch
Thumbs up for the do you want to build a keyboard intro song :D made me giggle
u didnt do shit stop asking for likes
Been there, done, that, can't wait to repeat.
As a person who builds keyboards and is part of the at community, there is plenty of budget builds that are 1000x’s better than any pre build you can by. It’s just like building your own PC, you save money, you get to create something that unique to you and pick every single component you want and you get to learn something if it’s your 1st time.
let's just re-emphasize how old this video is, it's made 4 years ago
@@Darkns feel that’s irrelevant
@@DonutMonster13 i brought it up cuz building keyboards 4 years ago is not the same as nowadays, 4 years ago this is like the average custom keyboards you can build at that time until over the years they're becoming more quality over quantity
@@Darkns not really, 4 years ago drop alt and drop ctrl were already released and good entry level boards.
I'd be more interested in a couple custom, super-cool keycaps on a mechanical keyboard I already love, than I would be in making my own from scratch, personally.
So this is what Satan does in his free time...
I don’t ever want to hear Linus say “lit AF”

Hi Linus,
I am pretty serious about investing the time and money to build my own mechanical keyboard.
Not only am I doing it for the fun of the project but also to increase my knowledge on how to fix these types of devices when the warranty runs out on a keyboard bought at a local retailer.
Thanks for this vey informative video.

What if I told you.... That we had a sponsor!
I've been working on a fully hand wired 60% keyboard on and off for a year now. It's powered by a teensy 2.0 and definitely hasn't costed that much. That is unless you count the time it takes... SO MUCH SOLDERING.
Look into wire wrap techniques.
You might want to look into PCB fabrication. The Sodium Chloride method is fairly easy and produces something good enough for a keyboard. It's literally drawing on the board with marker, soaking it in the solution, washing it off and drilling holes for your pins and screws to go through. I would suggest at least a cheap Chinese PCB stencil tool to make sure you get nice clean lines on your board but it's not required if you have a steady hand and a lot of patience.
For soldering there are many Hakko 936 knockoffs out there that are actually good. Aoyue (available through SRA soldering in the US) are my favorite but I've heard plenty good about Yishua as well. These irons make soldering a lot of pins a breeze. Just tape your components into place. Set the iron to 250C and go through the pins with some silver based solder. Shouldn't take any more than a second per pin thanks to the rapid thermal recovery of the 936 irons. Can go as high as 350C with a good tin-silver-copper solder before you start to see any notable degradation in the solder joints if you need a higher temperature for larger contacts (like common ground).
Doing it all with snakes and wraps is kind of nuts. Unless your running shielded pairs for each key your going to wind up with a lot of cross chatter by time your done.
The best route is to go with a kit off massdrop. You can find them for less than $120 USD.
Massdrop isn't always dependable. You may wait months and get a messed up order.
Intro: you can use any switches you like. Proceeds to use cherry browns
I wasn’t aware cherry browns stopped being switches
Perhaps he likes cherry browns.
I would rather use MX Blues
So he used what switches he liked?
give the gateron or kailh box switches a go as an alternative to cherry, you might be surprised that cherry really isn't the be all end all. I'm definitely a convert. Having a custom keyboard is a rite of passage imo
a small tip, there is no be all end all when it comes to switches, there are no better or worse switches. all switches are preference and there will be plenty of people who prefer cherry to all others
The way the market is right now, starting to wonder if i really need a motherboard.
the fuck does your motherboard have to do with your keyboard? Less you have reason o go for PS2...
Ps2 is gay
Neebah
used to play gta sa on it when it came out
I'm running an i7 8700k and a GTX 1080 Ti without a motherboard. They're useless! Don't listen to the idiots online that say you need a motherboard for your computer to run!
do you connect them with wires ????
Go further down the rabbit hole Linus, you didn't even hit esoteric switches like Zealios or Mod-M and the 60% form factor is still fairly normal, you need to get yourself a 78key or an ortholinear!
This is what you call a good sponsor transition
>satisfying bump of cherry mx browns
lol
What's the issue with MX Browns?
JamEngulfer Scratchy, mushy, and more expensive than better alternatives.
Which switches are better?
Антон Южаков practically all copies. kailh brown, zealios, gateron browns. Alps switches are also fantastic.
Yea, but what about prices of that switches?
I'm building my 4th custom RN.
This is a rabbit hole, just like audiophile stuff.......
I definetely want to see more keyboard content as it it my hobby and a little bussines of mine (i build custom keyboards for people)
From your latest video, I would never want you to build a keeb for me.
10/10 singing
solder episode pls. I would love to see price comparisons and see experienced people deal with that before I attempt it.
Go watch keyboard build streams
super late and nothing on the ltt team but don't use them as a reference for building keyboards. They just don't have much knowledge about the subject, perfect example is the fact that they overpaid like crazy for those mx browns. Even using browns in the first place was a mistake, they could have used Zilents or Holy Pandas for the price they paid.
"That satisfying tactile bump of Cherry MX Brown" Oh Linus, I envy you.
We’ve build PCs, and now we build keyboards! What’s next...? Custom mice... MONITORS?!
Revisit this? Collab with taeha types, pro vs jack of all trades (anthony)
this would be sick, I remember watching this when it came out think wait you build a keyboard? now being deep enough in the rabbit hole to not be able to escape a collab with taeha would be sick 👀
No thanks, Taeha Types community is aids.
