What's this? A video about the French? Well I'm sure the comments section below won't be a huge festering mess of surrender jokes. In fact I'm so sure, that I'd bet my historic dropped rifle collection on it. We'd also like to thank our sponsor, Infinite Galaxy for letting us do a ridiculously long and complex advert for them. There really was a French Fury on May 15-17 1940 , Battle of Stonne. At the French village of Stonne, which had already changed hands numerous times between French and German forces, A single French char B-1 commanded by Capt. Pierre Billotte attacked thirteen German tanks, destroying two Panzer IVs and eleven Panzer IIIs, the French tank survived despite taking a direct hit no less than 140 times. French tanks in 1940 were nothing to laugh at. In fact the Germans were reluctant to face one head on. In his memoir, Heinz Guderian recalled attempting “in vain" to destroy a Char B with a captured 47 mm anti-tank gun; "all the shells I fired at it simply bounced harmlessly off its thick armor. Our 37 mm and 20 mm guns were equally ineffective against this adversary. As a result, we inevitably suffered sadly heavy casualties".

    • @Alopex1
      @Alopex1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

@@eldorados_lost_searcher No problem, happy to answer the question :-) There are many German dialects throughout the German speaking part of Europe (Germany, Switzerland, Austria, parts of Italy, parts of France, parts of Romania), some of which are indeed almost unintelligble to speakers of "high German". I myself hail from a region of Italy where people speak a rather archaic dialect with a very strong Italian influence, and most Germans understand maybe 20-50% of what I say. So there are big differences, depending on where you live.
Broadly speaking, there is the "northern group" consisting of the northern half of Germany, and the "southern group" consisting of the southern half of Germany and all the other regions (Austria, Switzerland etc.). The northern group of dialects shares some minor similarities with Dutch and English and is (broadly speaking) much closer to "high German", while the southern group retains some very weird archaic characteristics. The Bavarian dialect is the most prominent and well-known of the southern dialects and is well-known for its use of a distinctive "r" sound (a trill, much like in Italian or Spanish) which most other German dialects don't have. The guy at 0:14 is speaking high German with a very strong Bavarian accent - most Germans would instantly recognise this. To Germans, this is quite entertaining, since the various regions of Germany have several stereotypes attached to them, and the Bavarians more so than others: the Bavarians are the ultimate beer-drinkers, the guys wearing lederhosen and eating sausages; they're staunch catholics, conservative and have an extremely high opinion of themselves bordering on arrogance, and yet are also very boorish (the hillbillies of Germany, if you will - please note that all of these are stereotypes, not necessarily reality!). The rest of Germany kinda laughs at them because of their haughty manner and funny dialect. Think of them as an American would of a Texan :-P
In the video, pretty much all the Germans are speaking high German (perhaps with the odd tinge of a dialect here and there, though I couldn't tell which) aside from the one Bavarian at 0:14 and 0:26 (here you can really hear the distinctive "r" sound).
Other dialects which are often the butt of jokes in Germany are Swiss German, Swabian German (from Southwestern Germany, closely related to Swiss), Austrian German (very close to Bavarian), and, most of all, Saxon (East Germany). In recent years the Saxon dialect which, like the Bavarian one, has long been associated with boorishness / hillbillies, has attained a more sinister reputation in Germany. The far-right (borderline Nazi) AfD party has its strongest support in the East German region of Saxony, so whenever someone uses the Saxon dialect in other parts of Germany, other people will sometimes feel instinctively uneasy. This is, of course, unfair to Saxons, who are by no means all far-right nutjobs!
Since you are from the US: think of German dialects as you would of what people in the English-speaking world call "accents". Within the US, someone from Vermont may speak something quite close to Canadian English, while someone from California may speak English with a strong Spanish accent and influence. People from the midwest and the south speak a variety of drawls long associated with backwardness and boorishness (though this is, of course, also unfair!). Many US English accents are so distinct that even many Germans here in Europe can distinguish them and understand the stereotypes attached to them.
Here's a sample to demonstrate the variety:
Sample sentence (English): "I bake a loaf of bread."
High German: "Ich backe einen Leib Brot."
South Tyrolean (my own dialect, from a German speaking region of Italy): "I pock an Loab Brout."
Bavarian: "I bock an Leib Brot."
Austrian (Vienna variety): "Ich back an Lääb Brot."
(You can see that the words used are very close to English, which is also a Germanic language and closely related to Dutch and German. Nonetheless, there are distinctive differences in pronunciation between the various dialects.)
Hope I was able to help and give you a short introduction into the dialects. If I may ask, do you use a specific English accent? If so, which?

That was way more information than I was expecting. Thank you, I'll try to develop my ears for the subtle differences in German going forward.
My base accent is a cross between New Yorker and New Englander, but I've lived outside of my old stomping grounds for half my life, so I've developed some bad habits, inspired by my residence in the mid and deep south. So I'll drop my R's when I'm angry, and in the same sentence say "y'all."
If you want more than that, I'll be glad to try to analyze it further, but that'll require more introspection in my speech patterns than I'm used to.

I remember reading how, after the battle, the Soviet crew counted the scratches and dent to see how often they had been hit, and they gave up when they got to 100 and were not even close to being done!
I think it may have been south of Leningrad, or Saint Petersburg, as it is named now.
This may have been an extreme example, but there were many such cases, and that was why the Germans were so quick to add high velocity 75 mm guns on their tanks, and started building larger tanks to fit the huge 88 mm gun!

Thank you so much for using the version of Panzerlied that I sent you! 🙂
Shame that it's with a Swedish accent rather than a German one. Oh well. 😏

You know, as a german, I found the part where I really had to pause and wait for the laughter to die down when he sang "Frankreich ist nur einmal im Jahr" at 1:05, a reference to a well known party hit in Germany...

Seeing lazerpig getting the attention (and consequent recognition) he deserves is very rewarding. I also love your fully voiced videos, keep it up man!

Alright, I admit it. “Pierre, kill the engine”. “Don’t worry sir, it’s more than capable of doing that to itself.” Had me laughing far more than it should’ve.
