It is beautifully done and I love the colours and materials. I simply think, it would not work because of the existing pipes from the toilet and sink and all the others from the floors underneath this apartment. You simply can't change their location.
In the hot summers nowadays i wouldn´t like to have a bed in a mezzanine. It´s always the warmest place in a flat. It´s a great idea to open up the ceiling, but I would simply enjoy the extra heigth of the room and not put a second floor into it.
Gemma, you can't begin to imagine what a joy it is to be guided through your beautiful solutions with you! It's always such a treat when you grace us with a new one.
I love this, the only change I would make is to replace the bathroom door with one with frosted glass to absorb the light from the window next to the entrance.❤❤❤
I love how light and airy your design has made this cramped space feel. I so hope your viewer does this and films it so we can see the final result. On second viewing, I am curious to know if there is any storage for clothing as you have lost the row of original storage cupboards/wardrobes. I'm wondering wondering if you could have some accessible from the staircase underneath the reading area or would that interfere with the head height in the bathroom? You could have an ottoman style bed with lidded storage crates underneath but currently I can't see and hanging space at all within your design unless I've missed it.
There is a little bit of hanging space next to the bathroom at the foot of the stairs, but it does seem smaller than the original wardrobe. I like the sound of your alternative storage solutions!
I think I would add a few rods above the entryway, accessible by the mezzanine (or to be lowered by a pulley system). You could hang a lot of stuff and it would air out lovely, too.
In the video it also seems as if there are a lot of cupboards in the bathroom, but on the drawings they seems to be missing. Storage under the bed is so handy. I have one of those ottoman beds and I can't image ever going back to a normal one
I love it. All by itself, the view is worth having to go downstairs to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. I'd put a handrail and decorative lighting in the stairway.
It’s absolutely gorgeous. I think that I would swap the stove with the refrigerator though. Or maybe have the wall be dishwasher/stove/sink. That would leave the entire top of the island free. You might be able to make the island slightly smaller so it doesn’t intrude as much into the living area.
And when the stove is against the wall, _please_ add an extractor hood to absorb all the cooking smells & particles. Without extraction of fumes, etc., that lovely curtain and the whole house will permanently smell like a kitchen.
LOVE this design! It feels so much bigger inside and the addition of the curved wall and loft is stunning. Love the drama of the long curtains too…softness, versatility, privacy and texture in one feature….classy and practical! ❤
Absolutely inspirational!!! It amazes me how your incredible brain works visually! Please show us more of these small space redesigns!! Xo from Canada ❤️
I always have to watch at least 3 times as Gemma imparts so much useful information throughout her explanations of her designs. She is a truly great designer.
gemma, once again, your creative reimagining of a challenging space has produced a fantastic design that completely transforms a cramped apartment into a gloriously open and inviting home.
Gemma, this is brilliant as always, plus there's the added thrill of incorporating that view! Thank you for sharing your thought process with us; it's so valuable and intriguing.
Your redesign of this home is so functional but makes the small space feel spacious but beautiful. I always look forward to your reinventions of spaces. I also appreciate your sharing your thought processes for developing a space. Thank you for bringing us your ideas!
Stunning as always and I absolutely loved this. I've wanted to live in every a single property you've renovated and this is no exception - that curve!! You bring warmth and a beautiful quality of calmness and simplicity to all your designs and they satisfy something deep within me.
I was just thinking of this channel today and wondering if there was a new video and look! It magically appeared. I admire your designs so much, and this is no exception. The space feels so much more open, inviting, and welcoming. The views become the centerpiece. It's giving me ideas on how I can improve my own space.
Another fantastic design! I was wondering how cooking fumes might be handled, and I understand how that detail isn't required in the video - perhaps a pillar style extractor from the counter top?
It looks beautiful, however... .,..If the sun shines into the house, all the warm air will go up to the tiny, encapsulated "bedroom" and stay there. It doesn't even take very high temperatures, 20 degrees or so will make the bedroom unsleepable...
Yes. I do have this question, too. I love Gemma Wheelers Content. Always looking forward, can’t wait and watch the older plans again and again and getting relaxed by that calm voice and her stunning simple ideas and the cozy plans. Maybe you have to sleep upstairs in Winter. And in summer just on the Sofa? Maybe Gemma Wheeler brings an alternative plan to avoid the heat upstairs brought by the hot summer sun.
Hi, yes heat rises but with the open walls it can also be moved through the space more easily with the windows to the front and back and with the addition of a fan if desired. The owner tells me that the neighbours have converted this space successfully so that suggests this hasn’t been an issue.
This is a wonderful improvement Gemma, and so great so see the current space with that amazing view and light. I hope the viewer takes your idea forward!
Love the lines you created in the living area, the curves, and use of fabric which really makes a difference with simple means. That separate platform behind the bed actually leaves room for the owners choice of need to fill. It could provide needed storage, house a library, or surfboards, artist material, it's an open bonus to the open plan. I'd have liked to perhaps add storage under the stairs, if that isnt fully utilized in the plan (I couldn't tell). This flat went from tiny bedsit to a real holiday apartment. Lovely! ❤
I am always in awe of your solutions to complex problems. And l learn a lot just from watching your videos. Simplifying spaces, traffic flows and fitting in nifty storage. So brilliant. Keep them coming
A brilliant and beautiful remodel. It’s like a metamorphosis from old, not so useful, to completely new and innovative. Fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing , Gemma. Always inspiring. Many blessings
Love it! I've always loved 'your' old stone buildings converted to beautiful small homes but this expands to a whole new range of your brilliant interior remodelling designs. More please ❤🙏🏻
I just found your channel and have binge watched every video. I am a Graphic Designer that loves home layouts and you are the most talented architect I have ever seen. Keep up your amazing videos I love them! - Jason from Salt Lake City Utah.
I have learned so much from you about air flow, light, and small spaces. You take something that seems impossible to make functional and you make it beautiful, cleverly used, and functional.
I am glad you are back with some more of your inspiring and creative ideas! 👍🏼Thank you! However I do wonder if the changes in this little apartment wouldn’t make the sleeping area in the loft maybe a bit hot and stifling?!🤔 Also I would want the entrance door opening to the other direction into the living area instead of the stairs… nonetheless - a cute little place!!👋🏼
Hey! Yes possibly, but as it’s open it would benefit from the air moving throughout the space via the windows to the front and back. And if needed, a fan may also be worth having to boost that.
Gemma - so refreshing to hear your reasoning and see your resolution of these very cramped and unusual spaces; evolving them into bright fresh and flowing liveable homes! Genius in action!
You are my favourite creator on TH-cam, I get so excited when I see you’ve posted a new video! Thanks so much for sharing your ideas and the accompanying visuals. 🎉
Absolutely stunning! You really made the most of the view with this ingenious remodel. It makes me wish it was my place and you'd done the remodel for me!
I would gently round two of the corners of the kitchen island... and as others suggested add hidden storage in any cavities available including some of the stairs.
I Love your solution. And your voice has such a pleasant timbre that I could listen to it by the hour. That doesn’t take away from the great architectural transformations you show us. Being interested in small or tiny spaces (and vintage or rustic buildings) I’m fascinated by your creative solutions. Any chance we might someday see some of those transformations done for real? I can’t believe there won’t be a smart client who applies them and wants to show them off.
Sooo stunning! The before was very charming and showed what a little gem this beautiful apartment is (i can imagine that he fell in love right after seeing it ❤), but the after was phenomenal! So bright and flowy. Really good thought out. Also i need to mention how i absolutely like it that you always explain why and what you do. Especially with this soothing voice ❤ Thank you, Gemma 😊
Gorgeous. Before i caught on to the fact that it was a loft apartment I was swinging the bathroom round and tgrpwing up a "Murphy bed" against the bathroom wall (I realise now that I'd need a wardrobe...! Ok... access one from inside the bathroom..) The mezzanine solves so much and adds alot more! Thoroughly enjoyable yo watch. Thank you, Gemma. G Ire
I mean, I would deal with the apartment as-is for a view like that, no hesitation!! But your suggestions double the space inside. Awesome job as always
This is just lovely and beautifully presented and explained. Icing on the cake - for me - would be some form of roof window: not a dormer, just on the plane and slope of the existing roof. But Gemma mentions that the exterior aspects are to be conserved.
Absolutely mind-blowing. So many 'designers' make spaces look better by essentially just taking things out, and while it does often look great it's obviously not at all useful for real people living real lives who have stuff and need to do things. I love that your makeovers are both beautiful and practical and often add MORE functionality to the spaces than they already had.
It's amazing how what could have felt cramp has brilliantly used the double height to make it feel light and airy. I was not expecting the second level. And smiled when I saw how relaxing that upper level is for sleeping as well as reading. I could picture myself living there.

Hello, have you ever heard about Never Too Small channel? The island ruined the space
That was a beautiful remodel. Another idea for storage is utilizing the steps. Putting storage in the steps as well as in the island.
It would be a shame not to! I'm sure the couch concept could allow for under-seat storage as well.
Yep, very very true!
Yes! If you want good space planning, look to the organization of #tinyhomes Boats & RVs 😊👍🏼
I believe the space below the stairs were already utilized as storage and place for laundry machine

It´s a great idea to open up the ceiling, but I would simply enjoy the extra heigth of the room and not put a second floor into it.
That’s true, but I wouldn’t enjoy a Mediterranean-type summer without AC anyway (I live in southern Portugal), so for me the mezzanine would be fine.
Gemma, you can't begin to imagine what a joy it is to be guided through your beautiful solutions with you! It's always such a treat when you grace us with a new one.
Always a better day when I wake up to a Gemma video.
I love this, the only change I would make is to replace the bathroom door with one with frosted glass to absorb the light from the window next to the entrance.❤❤❤
Great idea.
@@BP-nn7tq that is actually genius
Excellent idea.
Ooh! Brilliant.
That and I would curve the side of the island to parallel the wall.
I would like to see follow up videos if somebody ever implements these designs.
I love how light and airy your design has made this cramped space feel.
I so hope your viewer does this and films it so we can see the final result.
On second viewing, I am curious to know if there is any storage for clothing as you have lost the row of original storage cupboards/wardrobes.

You could have an ottoman style bed with lidded storage crates underneath but currently I can't see and hanging space at all within your design unless I've missed it.
Hope so too.
I would switch out a smaller island for a larger lounging area of chairs which could then be moved to look outside on a rainy day.
In the video it also seems as if there are a lot of cupboards in the bathroom, but on the drawings they seems to be missing.
Storage under the bed is so handy. I have one of those ottoman beds and I can't image ever going back to a normal one
Brilliant. She’s unable to disappoint. This as always is stunning.
Great improvement👌Suggestion: add rounded corners to the island & make both short ends drop-leaves to enlarge the work surface as required.
I love it. All by itself, the view is worth having to go downstairs to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. I'd put a handrail and decorative lighting in the stairway.
Motion-activated LED down lights at every step (or every second one) if you want to get fancy.
Considering that stairway looks fairly narrow, I wonder if the handrail could be inset into the wall?
Love this!! Would have rounded the back end of the island just a touch to echo the lovely curve on the wall.
This is a lovely solution to a cramped apartment with amazing views.
Fantastic, i love how you turn an old building with a gable roof into a powerful penthouse!
It’s absolutely gorgeous.
I think that I would swap the stove with the refrigerator though. Or maybe have the wall be dishwasher/stove/sink. That would leave the entire top of the island free. You might be able to make the island slightly smaller so it doesn’t intrude as much into the living area.
Agreed and add cabinets along the wall above.
And when the stove is against the wall, _please_ add an extractor hood to absorb all the cooking smells & particles. Without extraction of fumes, etc., that lovely curtain and the whole house will permanently smell like a kitchen.
Wow another simple layout that looks terrific and so beautiful.
Thanks so much!

On an unrelated matter, I just want to shoutout to that one BEAM having an existential crisis at 6:24 - Very relatable. lol.

So a kind of Venturi effect for air movement/ventilation (I guess)
fabulous. the main living space is gorgeous.
