I'm afraid you have it slightly wrong, you say Jesus answers the question that the person must keep the commandments then later post cross Paul states it is by faith. In fact in the new covenant good works as the fruit of the Spirit follows from true faith. As James states James 2:14-26.
God's word is true and His Words Hebrew 10:15-17 work only, if someone or Christians who were born again , accepted CHRIST as their Savior and have COVENANT with GOD Heb 10:16 , then He said ''......17 ''their sin I WILL REMEMBER NO MORE''. Now a day, there're lot of so call Christians , their lives are double, one foot in the church, the other foot is of the world, they don't have God or they put God's law out of their hearts and minds, continue sin and not repent, therefore their sin remain, then Heb 10:28-29 The LORD will judge.

If you don't believe me there have been many polls and studies published in the past 80 years showing this. Check some out.
