- Table Saw Blade Alignment and Tune-Up
At least annually I do a complete table saw tune up and blade alignment. If it’s been a busy year, I might do it every 3 to 6 months. This video covers my procedure exactly. And very likely it’s the exact same steps you would take for your table saw. Whether or not it is an industrial cabinet saw, a contractor saw or a hybrid. Almost all alignments are the same.

pro tip: you can use your fancy blade alignment tool to check your fence alignment for parallel the same way you did your blade. great video!

My boss, cabinet shop owner, had one of these fancy, expensive thingies. I took a punch to the bar on a miter gauge, made four pock marks - which raised the metal. Had to file down the pocks until the bar barely slid in the cast iron slot - NO SLOP., clamped a piece of scrap wood to the tight-fitting miter gauge and went halfway through the blade, shut off the saw, spun the blade and listened. We loosened the trunnion bolts...
Never to old to learn. I never knew of this adjustment. Thank you.

so...years ago I had an article on some magazine covering blade alignment. If you lay the blade over to 45 degrees and check the alignment it is likely to be easy off front to back on the blade. this leads to burned mitered edges. It also makes it hard to make the cut. The article had a procedure that involved Shimming the trunion, and where they went. After doing this my contractor saw was a dream. On a cabinet saw you shim the top. I have not seen this covered anywhere since.

I would like to add for those not use to using mechanical dial indicators, when you mount the indicator to the bar you should preload the dial indicator about 3. Thousands, this will remove any back lash in the movement of the indicator. I also use a master plate on the Arbor instead of using a saw blade. Saw blades typically are not parallel. As a former CNC Field Service Engineer back in the early 80’s. I wanted my saw set up correctly since I had the tools to accomplish this task.

Great video! I am new to table saws and understanding things like alignment is important. My fence and blade are definitely not near perfect. Also, there was something oddly satisfying watching the sawdust getting picked up by the vacuum. LOL Thanks for the video. I am going to seriously consider getting the A-Line It kit.

Hi James, great work. We have also found through years of set up, when you have your blade adjusted properly with your table guide slots, we like to adjust the fence open angle from the cutting side 1/32 from the front edge of the table to the back of the table. This gives you about a1/64 of open space from the start of your blade to the end of your blade -- way less burning and binding. Your fence is still set to the front teeth, all the same and allows a bit of tension to release while still getting a fantastic cut. Something to think about and probably not for everyone.
you might also check the run out on the arbor face, as well as the run out on the arbor screw, both with a dial indicator. i use a .001" flat machined metal plate instead of the blade to check for miter slot parallelism and for blade angle. this removes the saw blade from the equation. then you should also check the run out on the blade which will tell you if the blade is warped.
i prefer to use the dial indicator to check the fence parallellism. it can also tell you if your fence is warped, assuming the miter slot hasn't become worn. that can be checked with a high quality straight edge, like a starrett straight edge (not a ruler).

Great video! New woodworker here, so much appreciated. One comment: I noticed that the plungers of the A-Line-IT tool are on the side of the mitre slot that is closest to the saw blade. However, I watched the setup video that came with the A-Line-IT tool and the manufacture says the plungers should be on the side of the mitre slot that is opposite the saw blade. This pushes the side of the bar up against the side of mitre slot that is closest to the blade.

Hi James The only thing I could add or recommend is to use a product called Sandflex Sanding Block (3 pack) on your cast iron saw top. Its available on Amazon for about $16.00. They will bring the top back to a brand new condition.

Vacuuming that dust out can build enough static to give you quite a shock! Had a good one curl my fingers pretty well once. Started using a chain to ground myself after that.
Unless your vacuum is grounded like ours. But you are right, I have been shocked in the past!

I discovered your TH-cam channel not long ago. I watched many of your videos. High quality and well explain. Do you plan to make other videos on the maintenance of other shop machines? I just looked at the one on the parallel clamps. One more subscriber :)
Informative, thanks. One thing I do differently which I believe is more accurate, is the last measurement you made. Instead of zeroing out your fence, it is more accurate in my opinion, to put a test piece through your saw approximately 1" for example. If your test piece comes out at 7/8", no problem. Using your calipers, measure it, and change your measurement mark on your fence to match. Some lessor quality tables have blades that wobble to a degree, this process accommodates for that and you don't need your blade to touch the fence.

i have this same kit and it's absolutely amazing.. i use it for blade and fence alignment. you dont rinse the cleaning solution off before you coat the blade with the spray ?

I need to do this to my saw, and coincidently planned to do it today, but it's a cheap end saw so i have to find what adjustments there are. I recently built an adjustable mitre jig and it is accurate, however it looks as if the blade is drifting side to side and producing inaccuracies. I notice some movement (rock) when the saw is lowered or raised. I am not sure yet if there is anything to tighten. Thankyou for another great video

I am wondering about the links to tools that you mention. I’m not sure if there is something wrong with my app, but the hyperlinks in your videos don’t work for me anymore. Just thought I would ask since I found myself seeing you mention a tool and coming back to it several months later (like the squares you mention in this video). Again, thank you very much.
Guessing it would be a good idea to do these adjustments prior to building a nice crosscut sled.

Great Vid James, the only thing I would add is to verify the alignment of the riving knife to the blade, I used your methods and also found my riving knife was in line with the right kerf instead of centered causing binding between the riving knife and the fence after I realigned the fence and the blade to the miter slot.

That alignment jig will be a nice project on my mill. Cheap too, should not take more that $5 in materials.
Would the process be similar for a job site saw? I have a dewalt 745 and I always feel like it’s just slightly off (even for construction use). I am very diligent with cleaning and blade service otherwise. Bostik works really well for bare metal, but I feel like it’s less effective on coated diablo blades. It’s a great product, not cheap but worth the money.
I think there might be one other measurement that you need to address and that is with the blade set at near 45 degrees, measuring at both the front of the blade and the rear of the blade. I have a DeWalt contractor saw and mine is out of alignment by a significant amount and it would be beneficial to know how to correct this alignment.
Did the saw blade digital angle readout come with the table saw or is that an add-on?
FYI. Fellow Canucks. Unfortunately, none of the squares listed in the supplies list ship to Canada (at least not from Amazon). Bummer!
