I disagree that the only two reasons to initially start doing shows is to earn money and to gain fans. I think artists really want to show case their work and to have people enjoy their music live. Not saying that earning money or trying to gain new fans is bad, but there are certainly artists who’s incentives to perform live are not monetary.
IMO, having people enjoy your music falls under the “gain fans” category. But I definitely understand performing just for creative fulfillment. Everyone who picks up a guitar doesn’t do it bc they want to make a living at it.

Playing live shows is the best way to acquire DIE HARD fans, as it's a physical experience they'll always remember. But there are several ways to turn casual listeners into fans without ever meeting them in person.
