The rolling race in 3rd was interesting as it looks like VW has addressed the previous gen whispers that the Cupra 290/300 was quicker than the R once rolling. I suspect even Matt was expecting a similar outcome. There's no denying that the MK 8 R is a very quick car 👍

It'd be interesting to see the estate version of the Cupra face off against the Golf R, since that gets 10 extra HP and AWD, but has the added weight of being an estate.

As well as the 4wd, it's been proven by a few people now that a stock mk8 Golf R actually makes 340bhp, so no surprise that it wipes the floor with the Leon in both the standing and rolling races

Finally a classic carwow. Cars in same power level, race start less than 3 minutes in. Like the good old days. Not now when we have to wait 3 hours for the race just to see a 1000hp car smokes a 400hp car.
Well it’s good to see random things too but this is also a huge mismatch, 4wd vs front wheel drive and the 4wd has more power so only one thing is going to happen
had both of them and the Scirocco is a much nicer place to be, it's a higher quality and all round more refined package and it puts the power down with a lot less fuss than the cupra does with the same power. the Rocco works even better with the wavetrac lsd fitted and it's a more engaging drive than the golf R equivalent
Would be more fair to do the AWD Cupra Leon wagon vs Golf R wagon. Or alternatively this Cupra Leon vs Golf GTI clubsport AWD vs. FWD doesn't exactly seem like a fair matchup for dragracing.

Depends on elevation but average Dyno sheets of golf r are around 354bhp and 456ft lb tq which is alot better than the 300 and 420 they say assuming for tax bracket purposes

To be fair 13.6 seconds 1/4 mile is pretty good for a FWD car. Given the times the new golf are are setting I wouldn't be surprised if its boosted up a little more then it let's on to be. Either way a Golf gti vs the Cupra would probably a better comparison

I wouldn't expect the AWD drivetrain losses to be all that significant for the R once it's up and rolling. The Haldex system only sends (up to 50%) torque to the rear axle when it's actually required, and above 30mph on a dry track it's likely not required so the system will be essentially operating as FWD with the Haldex clutch open anyway. There will be additional rolling resistance from the rear driveshafts/diff etc, but that should be more than compensated for by the extra power. The only other significant variance is weight.

Had a customer in august brought in a 2017 GOLF R with 31,000 Miles needing a new DSG clutch pack Dealer quoted £1,900 for it and i did for £1,100 but only 31k on the clock is just crap .he also showed me a few others things that went wrong but in warranty and one which was just appalling was the Lacquer on the front wheels coming off when it was 7 months old because of the brake dust which just bad design and quality .

Oh man, I wish Leon had the 4x4 and 320HP and 420Nm, it suppose to be the sporties brand of VAG, yet it looks like the poor one, like Skoda. By the way, Octavia vRS should also have the same drive train. Mat try comparing Variant vs Sportstourer, they both have 4x4 and Leon is only 10HP weaker.
It won't have the same specs ever, VAG makes sure that their VW models in the same category will be better than Seat(Cupra) or Skoda cars in that category. They just want to promote VW cause it's native German brand ( I call d**k-move). But love the fact that Cupra is 10 times more beautiful than any VW.
If VAG did that there'd b no advantage to the R which is the flagship. I've got the Cupra and the deciding factor was money. I test drove both and in most real world situations I couldn't feel much difference but the Cupra cost a lot less and deals are out there. The R is a very sterile driving experience too. Better in every way except excitement. I like a hot hatch to feel a bit 'dangerous'. Like if you mess up it'll punt you off into a field. That's part of what made all the old school hot hatches feel so exciting to drive. The R is almost too good, too easy to drive, too capable and not mad enough despite it being very quick.
Always enjoy a ‘CarWow’ vid - just don’t like the website - when you go through selecting what you’re interested in, expecting to get the best price on your selection, only to find you have to wait for multiple dealerships to email you - then badger you relentlessly about your enquiry!

Would avoid the cupra at the mo. Had one since June. Lovely car, but infotainment is a mess. Regularly doesn’t work, which is a big problem, as everything is on it inc climate control. Literally crashes and doesn’t come on again. Heard it is a big issue with other VW group cars as well at the mo.

Hey Matt. One thing that I would like to see is a rolling race from 20mph to say 70mph. Most of the people are going to be doing that kind of driving. E.G. coming off of a roundabout and then joining the motaway/dual carriage way. Seeing how fast it takes would be a good metric when comparing against other cars :D Thanks again for the awesome episode. Would love to see more from that Cupra Leon!!!

It actually powers the Rear wheels alot. I got the Mk8 R and there is an option to see how the load is spread and it pretty much always utlizes it.
New version of the haldex system actually sends power to the rear wheels all the time. It’s different than the previous versions.
The MK8 R currently the best hot hatch.

Would avoid the cupra at the mo. Had one since June. Lovely car, but infotainment is a mess. Regularly doesn’t work, which is a big problem, as everything is on it inc climate control. Literally crashes and doesn’t come on again. Heard it is a big issue with other VW group cars as well at the mo.
Would be interesting to see how the Cupra Leon stacks up against a Leon Cupra 300… if the Golf 7.5 & 8 comparison is anything to go by

100kg less should slay the golf, they must have made the gearbox slower or worse tyres. Something doesn't add up.

Hey Matt. One thing that I would like to see is a rolling race from 20mph to say 70mph. Most of the people are going to be doing that kind of driving.
E.G. coming off of a roundabout and then joining the motaway/dual carriage way.
Seeing how fast it takes would be a good metric when comparing against other cars :D
