2 things, you forgot to mention that pazuzu can "change" his name to be able to get summoned by anyone in an attempt to pass as something other than a demon lord WotC released a bookon DMsguild called minsc and boo journal of villainy and Pazuzu is in it. He is god damn terrifying with the ability to cast a stronger version of dispell magic at will (wich is also available as a legendary action)
Reminds me when I used an aspect of Pazuzu as the last fight in a campaign. I bought a Pazuzu mini for like 40 dollars and my wife said “sooo you’re gonna buy that to use it once?” Yes honey, yes I am.
Just watched The Exorcist for the first time not too long ago. Perfect timing! I think for me, the Abyss is the most interesting place in the DnD multiverse.
I use Pazuzu a lot in my games. He's always a mastermind planning convoluted schemes and manipulating people. I love the fact he's whole deal is just corruption and chaos
Good video. I like the idea of Pazuzu as the real bad guy, manipulating things from the shadows. The players don't need to fight him or even meet him face to face. Just as the players don't need to meet gods that help them if they're clerics or paladins they don't have to face the likes of Asmodeus or Pazuzu. Pazuzu also strikes me as someone who always manages to be the lesser evil. As in, there will always be more powerful evils that the players will have to deal with while ignoring Pazuzu. Thus he can get rid of rivals and not be in direct danger.
The more I learn about Dnd demon lords the more I want a crossover with Shin Megami Tensei. Maybe when I finally play my first tabletop game this will be it.
I was a co-DM for a campaign years ago and a character was a winged Tiefling who was tied to Pazuzu. I wish I knew this information back then. Would've made it so much more interesting.
Whenever I hear Pazuzu I always think about rhe Exorcist. Mom and dad let me watch that movie when I was about 6-7 and it provided nightmare fuel for a couple decades lol. Thanx mom and dad.
Honestly, the interaction between Pazuzu and Asmodeus could be one of the most fascinating and scandalous dialogues of all time. While some might take "more virtuous" to mean Asmodeus is simply vain - what if he was altruistic? Pazuzu knows how universes die - maybe a deific scandal is what turned Asmodeus?
I played a halfling cleric of Pazuzu! In Pathfinder, where he's the rival of Lamashtu, who ascended to divinity in his stead when they killed Aroden, whose fallout was the Worldwound, which, incidentally, is championed by another demon lord, Deskari, who is the Locust Host and is said to have been created by Pazuzu's breath. Together with his companions, he built a city where Pazuzu first and Abadar second (the LN deity of cities, law, merchants and wealth) are worshipped. My cleric championed the idea of Good being really just a lull to oppress and kill you, as he experienced as a kid with the benefactors of his hometown, really a cult of Lamashtu bent on destroying the young through nightmares. He is saved by the Locusts Host (so really Descari,) that devours the benefactors who were haunting him down with their dogs. He has a vision of Pazuzu's home plane of High'n'Vania and becomes a faithful. He dreamed of spreading his faith beyond the city he built, to go fight at the Worldwound against those who would shut it down, and to become a demon with his own name. Unfortunately he died before reaching the 7th level (required for demonhood), his spirit devoured by the locusts and brought to his final place of unrest. It wouldn't be his final abode for long though: he is reincarnated as a blue kobold by a shaman who, against all evidence, maintained with his fellow adventurers that reincarnation is resurrection. Thats where he starts to doubt the mental capabilities of his companions 😀 But so be it, he is alive and kicking again... and Pazuzu won't talk to him anymore. He maintains the faith though, screaming into the darkness every night from the highest tower in the city until one day he receives the vision from the abyss of a cult of Lamashtu that threatens the city from the shadows, and he's back in business! He was wont to have long walks with one fellow adventurer who maintained that Aroden preached freedom through wealth and organization, to hang the bowels of his enemies as decoration from the trees so that birds could devour them, and to defecate on relics of lamashtu.
I thought Asmodeus didn't use the shard to make his rod, I think he just incorporated into the Ruby Rod he was given when he was granted lordship of the Nine Hells.
FYI Pazuzu was actually used for good depending on circumstances... "I am Pazuzu, son of Hanpa, king of the evil spirits of the air which issues violently from mountains, causing much havoc." The demon Pazuzu was associated with ill winds, particularly the west wind which brought the plague. His terrifying, scowling face and his scaly body repel the forces of evil, which meant that in certain circumstances the figure was considered a protective spirit. Pazuzu, a demon from the hellish underworld, had the power of repelling other demons, and was thus invoked for beneficial ends, particularly to drive his wife Lamashtu back to the underworld. Lamashtu was a demoness who attacked men to infect them with various diseases.
Correct me if I am wrong - or openly discuss - but I’ve taken to understand that Pazuzu was the entity also responsible for (in Forgotten Realms) for the corruption/ downfall of the ancient Aaeoree (ancestors of avian species of FR DND: aarakocra, wyverns, kenku, griffons etc) that were eventually succeeded by the amphibious-reptilian predecessors of the Yuan-ti. In my own investigations, it came about that Pazuzu infiltrated the Aaeoree and led them to their downfall and when they realised he was actually a Demon Lord he cast a great plague against them. My own personal theory is that he is the ancient sky deity that caused the curse of the Kenku and burdened Quorlinn (the god of the kenku) with their cries and prayers for help, reducing them to what they are today.
You got it reverse. Sarrukh, amphibious-reptilian predecessors (as in creators) of yuan-ti were the first race. Aaeoree were second or third, since there were also batrachi.

Most things are up for debate. Most things. His being the eldest demon though? No thats not up for debate. Thats canon across all editions so far. Maybe when the next franchise owner comes about it will change. Until then, though, he is oldest. On a really cool side note, it is heavily and tantalizingly implied he is so old that he and he alone among obyriths is actually something even older than an obyrith in truth possibly. No obyrith more mysterious (that last part is an opinion though).
When trying to determine the CR of my player character gone evil red dragon lvl 20 wizard plus artifact creator. I wrongly thought i could take Pazuzu in the sky.
I would not say that he is the worst demon. He is protecting mothers and newborns and he protects people from other demons. Lamaštu and other demons are much worse in my opinion. Of course Pazuzu has his bad sides too. Just like us humans.
I think you are confusing Pazuzu with Obox-Ob, no? He was the one who created the Shard of Pure Evil and corrupted Tharizdun. Also, I tend to assume that most Demon Lords are Lesser Deities, Demigods or Quasi-Deities at least.
Oh I remember reading that now that you said it. But it does specifically say Pazuzu was the culprit with Tharizdun and the Shard in the 4e Demonomicon.
