Wow, this interview is an amazing educational experience with historical perspective. Mr. Borden's narrative is so clear and precise that someone with limited experience in benchrest begins to grasp the details that make all the difference. Hoping to translate that knowledge into smaller groups. Thank you Mr. Borden and Erik.
You know I spoke to him for almost 40 min one afternoon when I ordered my action. And he was telling me about his hunting experiances with his rifles and actions. The best part even if you don't compete, is you can still build your hunting rifle with his actions and they work amazing.
At 80, here in Scotland, I’m very much aware of Mr Borden from his bench rest days and when we had that excellent publication Precision Shooting Magazine sadly missed, edited by Dave Brennan. Listening intently throughout this incredible interview, it validated why I have so many Borden action rifles which seem to shoot lights out compared with the many others I’ve owned. In particular a Custom 257 Weatherby and a single shot 6.5 x 47 Lapua, the latter built as a hunting carry rifle, which will shoot three consecutive three shot 0.30” groups or more, when I play my part. This 257 WM as a long range tool, completely destroys any criticism or argument against the quarter bore for accuracy etc. I hope, we don’t have to wait too long for another session.
This was a long awaited interview. Jim Borden is a treasure in the industry. Erik, I started following your channel about 2 years ago. From you I found out about Borden actions, and since I was on the market for the first rifle I decided to build one. I contacted Jim and stopped by his shop, he was kind enough to guide me through a overwhelming amount of options and after almost a year of wait I got myself a barreled action from Jim. This rifle is amazing, can't wait for next interview with him. Great job!
I’ve been a Mechanical Engineer for 25 years, mostly R&D and aerospace. Your interviews are awesome. This was great and I always enjoy the barrel makers too. Is Proof Research on the list? What about a trigger manufacture or two, Jewel, Trigger Tech something like that? Keep it up! Just awesome.
I'm already waiting for the next one. I love when guys are ready to drop some knowledge and not try to hide things and not give out info. He knows his name and machining ability is enough.
Absolutely the best Believe your target podcast yet. Sooo much information there that novices, like me, can understand and apply. Always wondered where that extra money between a custom action and a premier custom action went. Now I know. Attention to detail. Gonna get a borden action for an fclass build. Just have to wait to get it.
Gentlemen like Mr Borden and Mr Krieger are a treasure. They possess vast amounts of knowledge yet remain so humble, giving them the ability to share that knowledge effortlessly. Thank you for this talk. I'm wiser for hearing it.
Man I knew backside paper was where it was all hapening. Thanks for this one guys. Jim, as a small manufacturer your ability to wade through the hoopla and B.S. to find your way to people like Speedy and Erik who know what works, is simply refreshing. I'm all in for part 2 and 3 and 4.
OMG Eric having Jim on with this interview is riveting with great info . You got to love a guy that has come this far to make some off the best actions available.I would love to see a shop tour and some actual actions been made .Thank you both can’t wait for the next one ! Big fan of you both
What a classic interview! This will take multiple rewinds to get all the golden nuggets! A lesson I learned from Speedy. Keep em centered and keep them coming. Looking forward to the next installment.
Awesome interview. Eric didn't have to ask too many questions as Jim kept on giving. Please organise another interview with him asap. Regards from Australia.
Mr. Borden; your toilet paper engineering story madw a lot of sense to me...i did a lot of automation and monitoring work for newspaper production, which not too many people "get", but it's a very high volume business, with even a mid-size operation doing several million per week, with that times Z, number of pages per week, and downtime costing tens of thousands of dollars per hour, so "goodness" of solutions really counts...and, one of my best friends worked as a process engineer, and developed a big process simulation product, so that I can readily appreciate the complexity of the "minimum punch-through" material and process engineering!
I e been waiting for this episode. I hold Jim Borden and his products in the highest regard. I truly don’t think there is anything better! My first action when I started down the short range benchrest game was a Borden Rimrock. While everyone else was having the firing controls fixed on their Bat actions my Borden just kept on producing teen aggs. Borden actions were my first choice then and still are today! Thank you Eric and thank you Jim for this episode. I truly enjoyed every minute of it!!
A fantastic interview. I have always been a fan of intelligent people discussing the timing of bolt’s and why they do it. Adding the fact that you give measurements and poundage’s is a plus. Thank you Erik for having Mr Borden on for an interview and thank you Mr Borden for letting Erik interview you. I look forward to the next interview with Mr Borden on your channel..
I appreciate the work you do and all the hard earned knowledge you freely share with the shooting community. Your videos make it much easier for people like my dad to get into shooting sports and quickly grow their skills and abilities.
Great interview Eric. I must say that when the subject of the Borden website came up, I had to agree whole heartedly. I've visited Jim's website many times & left the site more confused than when I when into it. I thought that the delineation you suggested is definitely the way Jim should go.
Thanks for input and we are working on getting there. I guess having a geared brain with using logic did not fit the need of the most common users of the site.
The web site isn't horrible, there's just so much info to sift through. It's like a recipe book having all the info necessary but, with all the different categories of recipes randomly listed with the names of the recipes not delineating the differences clearly. The reader has to to read each recipe to try to figure out if it's a main meal or a desert by reading the ingredients. It's a very easy situation to create in any website simply due to the gulf of knowledge between the creator & the reader, especially when the number of choices is numerous. @@jamesborden7112
Thank you Erik & please pass on thanks to Jim. That was a wealth of knowledge across a phenomenal amount of work, much time & many people, broken down with simplicity & elegance, easily digested & retained, that can hopefully be passed on, or at least utilized. Thank you again, keep up the great work & wishing you continued success.
Wow . Unbelievable.. this was tremendous. The amount of knowledge and experience. Impressive. Hands down hands down the best interview I have ever seen . Only problem, he’s going to get real busy . So I may wait a while before I order .
Every time i have spoken to Jim or heard him talk shop. I always end with 100% confidence in what he says. Keep up the good work , your expirence is by far better than the latest hype One diagram on your web site that could be helpfull is a simple diagram of part names which make up your actions so people fallow your cleaning instructions. Thank you sir
Best podcast on the Tube ever! Will have to revisit many times because there is SO much wisdom in it! I've had plans since last year to order a Borden barreled action this February. Now I will be ordering TWO!
A couple hours just flew by. Jim is a Gem. I appreciate Mr. Corrina's isight as well. So much to learn from you both. And for sure Mr. Borden please come back on.
Jim Borden is great! I could listen to him all day. Erik Cortina is pretty good too... behind a microphone or a bull float. I heard that he can shoot too.
Pretty cool guy and talking about Mike Walker is one of my 40x ole guy !! This Erik was was very interesting I could set listen to guy’s like Jim for hours, thanks and keep them coming!!!
Great pod cast Jim and Erik. On a side note primer blanking can also be caused by weaker springs then the internal pressure over riding the firing pin spring. It is a common problem with remington actions and guys who oversize their flash holes. During case prep.
great suggestion from Erik at about 56:00. While watching this interview I was looking at the Borden website and was definitely overwhelmed by all the actions. That said, these actions look very nice. I learned a lot, thanks gentlemen!
it was an absolute treat to watch this interview ! I will watch this a few times for sure , to absorb as much as possible . Jim has always taken the time to explain things in a way that I can grasp , whenever I have had to call him . Erik , you fellas never got the chance to talk about his Super Short Six action . Ask Jim about his ultra rare "Sasquatch" action ! lol cheers
Learned a lot on this one. The parts about the bolt and the barrel torque I think interested me the most. For an in depth video on barrel torque, I recommend jacob bynum of rifles only. Hes got a good video on the torque procedure.
Many thanks for this interview, Jim was super knowledgeable and interesting. One thing I’d love to know the answer to is why Borden actions don’t have an integral picatinny rail? Most modern custom actions have an integral rail, to aid rigidity, concentricity and prevent just one more point of failure from happening (eg screws/pin coming loose). Why does Borden not have integral rails?
I have some very solid reasons why I have not done integral rails. I am not certain where you get conclusion that they add concentricity because the opposite is actually true.
Jim; regarding website "logic" When I was an application engineer at tektronix, we ran into a similar issue, with customers not finding it easy to use a kind of specification-based logic/selection "tree", so I suggested that tek use two methods of navigation, one based on a specification tree, and another based on the type of application that the customer wanted to use the product for, so the application method ends up being a kind of "consultant '" for the customer, guiding them to the gear that was a fit for the applications, without the customer needing to know that they needed 350 MHz probe, 500 MHz scope, a current probe, and active FET probe....I guess, in simple terms, like me going to you and saying that i want to hunt elk in BC, what do I need? Or, i want to do ELR like in this kind of competition, what works? kind of a simplistic example, but driven by a "high-level" need, without a fixed starting point; just a thought?
Way beyond my knowledge !!! At least I have the right guy doing my custom 7prc build. Can't wait till July when it hopefully is delivered. Cortina brags about him and Brux barrels. Good enough for me for my 1st custom rifle.

Hands down… the absolute best interview I’ve ever seen as far as actions and their construction and maintenance!
