Let's stick to Moneyball tactics. That's what got us the cattle for our 2023 flag. Paying big bucks and giving up top shelf trades for a man on a pale horse is a long shot used by too many clubs who then end up empty handed - no flag, no cup.
We took a first rounder last year in DeMattia and McGuane will most likely be a first round next year so we have no problem with that aspect. Ideally North finish last and they won’t match because they’ll get better compo from the AFL than any trade they’ll get. I like LDU but his injuries concern me a bit especially knowing it’ll be a 7 year contract. But what a midfield it would be.

Should LDU become available I would suggest that there would be 17 clubs chasing him but of those 17 clubs, one would be successful so why not the Pies? Apart from salary, Collingwood can offer a lot more than most clubs so why not? Another thought is that Petraca will likely be available which is a similar scenario. Petraca can't offer the same number of years before he retires but he can offer a fair smattering of raw talent, far greater than most.

Definitely a valid point but hard to surmise where McGuane will land in the draft. His range could be anywhere in a midfield deep draft next year.
