What size pressure cooker and any recommendations where to buy?

Have you had issues with contamination? Most teks use a flow hood when adding the spawn, and I've been looking for someone who doesn't use a hood.

Could I tape the bag or do I definitely need a sealer?

late reply but yeah you can, i use micropore tape as it sticks to the plastic better than sellotape / plastic tape does

One question; why dont your bags melt when in direct contact with the presto?
I've just started but so far when my bags are touching the sides they melt...
Thx in advance for your time..

If you have enough water in your pressure cooker the steam essentially keeps everything from drying out. If the pressure cooker runs out of water, the bags will be hit with dry heat and start to crack, which has happened to me more than once. Having the correct water level in your pc is extremely important.

    I use this mix:
one lb of pure Oak hardwood pellets.
1/2 a lb of Soy Pellets
1/2 a lb of Wheat Bran
    3lb of water (sometimes 2.9lbs)
PC for 2.5 hours at 15 PSI
I may add more oak pellets & remove some of the Wheat Bran in future mixes (experimentation is key because no one shares their secretes)
oysters will grow on almost anything, I use this for Lion's Mane & Shiitake mostly
if you can get straw pellets you can use those for the oysters, its cheap & they will love it

I'm new to growing oysters. I've heard it's best to pasteurized, not sterilize the wood substrate.
I spawned to grain with a liquid culture. My plan was to pasteurize the master's mix and add spawn. Is it worth taking this extra step over just innoculating sterilized wood/master's mix substrate?

What about contamination , with out laminar flowe hood

@@smashtrays The bags are only sterile until he opens them. He is inoculating these bags with grain spawn with no protection from contamination. In fact, he talks straight into the bag before he pours the grain spawn in!

@@justwhistlinpixie You have a higher risk of contamination but it isn't guaranteed. Mushrooms have been cultivated since 600 CE, well before HEPA filters existed.

I watched part 2... only 1 of 4 bags yielded mushrooms. That flow hood or still air box is critical with sterilized substrate. Maybe try pasteurizing next time.

I will make a vid showing how I fold my bags & put them in the PC so that there is zero chance of them sucking up any water.
I am going mushroom hunting first though, I need some Turkey Tail to clone :) its also Morel season.

Why not just seal your bags, pressure cook, then inject with liquid culture?

Wait a minute. You just sterilized that mix and now youre inoculating with clean grain in dirty openn air. You should be doing this step in front of the flow hood. this just doesnt make sense at the stage of growing. or im freaking crazy haha this will not grow out

    • @GravityBunk
      @GravityBunk ปีที่แล้ว

It isn’t necessary, flow hood isn’t all that necessary.

I've been growing mushrooms for 15 years and I can tell you right now you are way overcomplicating things you don't have to weigh your Spawn break it up into four amounts slightly within the bag pull it out of the spawn bag throw it in the new bag break it up the rest of the way flip the bag around tight with the zip side tie don't even bother using a sealer and you're done

    • @horticology9077

Some people just prefer more organized and direct steps with consistent inoculation times. I enjoy the process of things like this and being a little more detailed. Thanks for watching
