    oh these guys reached out to me for sponsorship as well... I sent them a bunch of questions asking how the company avoids stealing artist's work and bypassing licensing and also how they can ensure that there's a standard of quality considering we all know that AI does not produce perfect quality writing in even the simplest of contexts, and the response was basically along the lines of "the company is sensitive to these concerns and that's why we provide the option of having real humans work on the project as well" but then if you do want that, it's over $4000 a year + potential additional costs... and still using AI for multiple steps.
    Appreciate you chatting about this, even just to make more people aware! AI can be used in certain processes for efficiency, yes, but the last thing I want is AI taking jobs away from real human artists who dedicate their lives to their craft..

    Ugh I hate this. Self publishing should take time!! It should take effort and hard work!!! :/// 😓 I agree that it feels like it’s exploiting authors who want to self publish but are overwhelmed by the process. Plus it’s going to further hurt the reputation of self publishing by putting lower quality half baked books out there. Why are we scared of things being hard lol. We do not need to make self publishing automated and easy. Also this is so expensive, you could absolutely self publish for less hiring real people

      😅 the video is basically “old man yells at cloud”, though
      it’s not some random company “spines” fault …. the discussion is about the inevitability of AI throughout all industries 😅 soooo all that’s being said here is what anybody and everybody is saying about the impending AI apocalypse…
      you can’t just be mad that modern tech is so good that any idiot can simply create a good cover at the push of a button … that’s just how the cookie has crumbled, and I don’t think pandora goes back in the box
      we need to put on our big girl & boy pants and realize that cover art, formatting, and grammatical editing is simply parts of the equation that can be facilitated with recent tech developments;
      AND even the “research” and writing can be facilitated by the tech as well; so then it comes down to individuals having novel idea(s) that they are passionate about putting their time and effort into marketing and sharing with the world
      * the biggest issues are A) the zombie internet simulacra spiral race to the bottom & B) bigtechfascismm ;

    So, you're paying them $5,000 to sit on their rear ends and run your novel through Grammarly? For that kind of money you could pay real people who would do a much better job. This is insane, and so disheartening. I can empathize with people who feel the pull to cut corners on publishing using AI. I'm preparing to self-publish my debut novel this fall and the learning curve has been steep. But it's truly not worth it. I'm a firm believer that AI doesn't belong in the arts. It opens the door for predatory companies like this who see a way to exploit an author's desire to see their work in print for cash.

  • @KyleenWren

    Even their website was written by AI 😂 Like, this web copy is so weak. And that's what they're doing with people's books. Yes, AI is inevitable, but not to replace creators. We may see a swing like this, but it won't stick.

  • @MeredithPhillipsWrites
    @MeredithPhillipsWrites 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    Totally agree with you! And honestly, if you’ve spent so much time working on a novel and you’ve poured your heart into it, why present it to the world in the most slap-dash way possible? DO THE WORK to finish your project and finish it well by hiring professionals to do the parts you cannot (i.e. proofreaders, editors, cover designers, audio narrators, etc). Yes, it is expensive to hire that kind of service. Life is expensive. Start saving and invest your money in what is important to you.
    The idea of AI proofreading a book is laughable. I’m sure it’s better than the spellcheck/grammar check in Word or Google Docs (or at least I hope so??), but we all know how many errors the grammar checks make. Language is too nuanced to be proofed by a computer. Grammar checks are forever correcting my work for phrases that _are not_ incorrect, it is simply me using older phrasing or something that sounds period appropriate for my historical romances. AI would strip my writing of its voice and character. Ew.
    TL;DR it’s a no for me on AI.

    Self-publisher here. Of course, you should never pay someone to publish your book for you - even if you're self-publishing. Those prices are insane. I can hire my own cover artist and editors (real editors) for less than 5k. The 70% thing is what you can get with Amazon KDP, so that's normal. But all that cost for what? A glorified version of Grammarly? Yikes.

    I'm on the fence about this. After doing extensive research about self publishing in the last six months, I've realized that I will probably not be publishing anything. It's expensive. If I want to publish a 40,000 word book, it would cost at least $1,600 for the four editing jobs that folks suggest. And that's at a penny a word. Most editors charge between 1 to 3 cents per word. That's just the editing costs

    I uh, have no problem shaming people about using generated shlop based off of stolen work. Art is communal, as much as it is individual. It's about supporting folks, not creating as much content, as fast as you can. Capitalism was always going to end up screwing creatives, because as a system, it views profit as the main motivator. I get it is hard out here, especially considering how oversaturated it is with bots, and spam accounts, and this generated shlop. That doesn't mean succumb to the desire to produce, to make hollow your story, whether it's a fanfic with a sparkly vampire, or a massive epic fantasy saga. I believe in all aspiring authors, to find some level of success, which doesn't need to look like a ton of money, or fame. You can do it, and best believe, you'll need help along the way. And that's ok, because that is often the best way to bring out one's creative juices-by bouncing it back and forth with other creative folks.

  • @hedge931
    @hedge931 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

    AI, aka, automation, will never produce the quality that a unique individual can. It will eventually stagnate. The professional will reject it, and the layman will get bored of it. Just like every automated process ever, it has its limits. Although I don't think it's a long term threat to creative industries, it does disappoint me that it will probably have a grip on it in the minds of a lot of people for a while. I wouldn't be surprised if companies like this know that it will eventually become less desirable of a tool and are just try to cash in while they can. This kind of marketing also preys on people who haven't yet learned (or don't care about) the reality that you can't have the trio of fast, cheap, and quality all at once.
    No matter where technology goes, there are truths that always remain the same, and I think it's important to remember that and not let the hype and drama shake us or scare us away from our callings and endeavors. Real will always be better, even if it's less popular at times, because what people love about art is the human soul behind it.

      This is such a great question! I'm not a visual artist so I'm not sure exactly how the community feels about it, but to me, it feels like the difference is in the humanity and creativity. I think the main gripe for ai art is that it is blatantly stealing the image and changing a few things rather than merely taking inspiration and learning 😊

    I'm sorry but for 5K, I can get an audiobook, eBook and paperback made by real people. I've gotten my covers as cheap as 50 and editing for as cheap as 300. What's going to cost me the most is an audiobook narrator and I've gotten a quote for about 3K for dual narration. Sooo... Yeah... For the same price they want to charge, I can pay human beings to make the art.

  • @skyewinterbooks

    I'm sorry but even if you an author out there has $5000 to spend on publishing their boo, there are tons of avenues that they could get all the services required to self-publish to meet that budget and less. Audiobooks would likely be the most expensive service being offered there and even then there are royalty share options through ACX, and other platforms that can get you the same outcome for much cheaper. Don't get me wrong I have nothing against the idea of AI, I believe there can be ethical ways to utilize AI (social media captions, or marketing copy for example, heck even brainstorming if you don't have other options). But as presented here, there is nothing to confirm your book won't be just reused for training and repurposed for their other clients, nothing to say who retains the copyright of the published manuscripts, and with the prices, nothing to separating this company from a vanity press in my eyes.

      Also, as someone who just self pubbed a book, did my own editing, cover, and will do my own audiobook... the only things I pay for are my graphic/audio softwares and Word. It's not hyper expensive to self pub. Time consuming? Yes. But monetarily, it's way cheaper than this company.
