No frill's, all truth. Thanks!
💚💚💚loved this vlog, Alyssa! The imposter syndrome is the worst but you’re doing everything you can to make this book the best it can be and that’s all going to pay off!
💚 sometimes the writing process isn’t linear - it’s just whatever works for you! 💚
💚
“Circle! Cross it out! Put an arrow!” 😂 this needs to be on a mug.

i loveee your candid reflections on querying! its so refreshing and encouraging xx thanks for this vlog alyssa
Sometimes I honestly leave in filler phrases so I can CTRL+FIND later. ha ha. i honestly would not waste time line editing until it gets to a beta reader. Waste of time in my experience.
When I took my novel as far as I could on my own I was getting a few requests. BUT I knew it was missing something so I applied for and got a mentor who sent me a 7 pages edit letter. Did not tell me how to fix it, just pointed out everything that was a problem. It took 3 months to revise. I sent it out again and got 17 requests and 2 offers. You’re doing the work and it doesn’t matter if it takes a long time! P.S. let me beta or critique your query package
literally every time you comment, it fills me with hope for the future. I seriously want to be you when I grow up
Adding this to my list of favorite Alyssa vlogs 💚
I printed my first draft from Lulu - spiral bound so it still lays completely flat with normal letter size paper (and you can create your own front and back cover!!) I think mine was about $35 including shipping But it did take 2 weeks or so to arrive so do with that what you will
“I wasn’t turning the pages fast enough…” Sounds like a skill issue tbh
BRB emailing the agent with this information immediately

god i love your personality. your vlogs are utterly entertaining. thank you for the top tier content 🫶💚
Was there a Christmas tree in the background ? I didn’t notice it at first but then an ad popped up On my screen for Christmas decorations and I looked back up And thought maybe there’s a tree there 🤷🏻♀️😂 why is temu promoting deco at this time of Year and to someone like me to who(m?) it doesn’t apply 😂 When you put your printed pages down in the kitchen it looked like those videos where u used to meal prep 🙌🏼 💚
lol, I have my tree down now - I'm a bit behind on my vlog editing
@ 🤣🙌🏼

💚
💚 lol I also fall into the trap of having the super dramatic lines at the end of a chapter that are just nonsense 💚
i live for the drama

@@alyssa.and.the.books. as long as you didn't get kidnapped its all good bestie!! XD take as much time for yourself as you need ❤
Thanks for the good advice and hard-won wisdom. The only thing I would add is to that last point that while of course not everything is fun: It can still be *enjoyable*! I recently made two big storage shelves/workbenches out of old scrap wood, and it was a long, frustrating, and tedious process... but I still enjoyed it! And I was happy to have the shelves completed, and stuff up off the floor. And there is that pride in getting the work done. And I feel the same way when I look at my five novels: a lot of it was fun, but a lot of it was just *hard*. But at the end, I have the sense of accomplishment you can only get from having done the work yourself.
This is the best advice and video to listen to while I’m at work I am so inspired to get home and do whatever writing I can and set some achievable goals based off how I work. Fantastic. Love this, love you, THANK YOU!!
I couldnt align more with this. This sounds like someone speaking who actually writes.
Excellent content. And you weren't annoying at all.
Your mom is so smart
Thank u ... I can't do people peopling when I am trying to write... and I feel the judgement when people say 'u need community' when I'm an introvert naturally
so glad this resonated with you <3
This was actually really inspiring. I completely agree with you about taking breaks as a kneejerk reaction. When I first started writing, I did that and inadvertently trained my brain to give up as soon as I hit a problem. It was harder to unlearn than to learn.
A month longer? Man, a year in my case 😂 Yeah, also, I really have no idea what number draft I'm on. It's either draft 3 or draft 7, I really lost track by this point lol.
Hi Alyssa, I just found your channel, I started writing my real Novel in September 2020 and I'm almost done but I don't know how to write a Synopsis without giving the Plot away (don't know if that's possible?). I live in Europe and here in my Country I have to pay a lot of money to Publish my work.
This was one of the most motivating videos I've ever seen
🍁🍁
Seriously, "Nobody cares" is some of the best advice I've ever gotten and now I give it to everyone else about... life in general. People get SO in their heads about what other people will think of them and... *no one cares*. I *promise*. And, like you said, even if they seem like they care, they're really judging themselves through you. It's never about you. It's always about them.
Another banger of a video, Alyssa 👏
✔️I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts about your current draft. I’m about to start the revision process for my draft 2 and trying not to feel overwhelmed by it 🙃
you've got this girl!
This is so good! Because its so true the writing advice gets in your head thats why I dont watch much youre the only one I watch because its more funny vlogs makes me feel less alone but youre so real I love your videos
I NEEDED this right now, honestly. thank you for sharing and being so honest. such a good video!
i've never known what it was like to have a big sister until I watched this video XD "you're not that big of a deal" but said affectionately is just everything haha
Ate and left no crumbs
Thank you so much for making this video! 😊💙📚 Your openness helped me by reminding myself that it's okay to have a flexible schedule. ❤ Because... I don't work between specific times, since having flexible work times gives me a feeling of freedom. Instead, I have a weekly schedule with stuff that needs to be done each day. I often feel anxiety and stress when stuff from one day gets pushed to the next. But your video reminded me that I do indeed have a FLEXIBLE schedule. The stuff on my schedule is written there, to help me remember what needs to be done. And it doesn't matter if it gets done a bit later. The most important thing, is that they get done during that week. 😊 Thanks again! / DARK FANTASY Author Birger at Birger Tales 💙📚
The fact that you just uploaded this is a miracle. Out of all the videos I’ve seen - from professional authors to snake oil TH-camrs - your advice has been the most helpful I’ve ever heard. You even inspired an abstract idea I may test out on my writing routine lol
I am one of those people who really needs a routine. The trick is that the time doesn't matter. The whole routine involves opening the document I'm working on, making a cup of tea or coffee, and finding instrumental music to listen to while writing. Within ten minutes, I'm ready to create. During those ten minutes, I'm actively thinking about my story, because I've opened the file. That might be just my brain playing games though. It loves complicating anything that doesn't count as procrastination.😂 Edit: I also am terrible at knowing what time it is, so I couldn't implement time into the routine. It would make it extra stressful for me and I would stop trying after a week.
this feels like advice from a big sister 😄 Kind of challenging to hear but helpful. There is no perfect or right way and so we all get to make it up as we go. (I already knew that but still the idea of a right vs. wrong way seeps into my mind). Love your honesty always 🧡
The thing you said about everything takes a month longer than you think it will… urgh this … I started watching you in November 2023 while finishing the draft of my PhD thesis. I thought I’d be editing it and submitting last year. Now it’s over a year later and I’m editing and proofing it … 😅🤓but ! In the meantime I was inspired to draft a novel in between waiting for the edits over the months, so I guess also, while everything takes so loooong, other things in life happen at the same time, so while some things seem slow, at least we’re still living and making progress on a range of things. Like, maybe your novel edits take a month longer, but then at the same time you crush a triathlon etc etc (the triathlon of course being your thing, I’ve never done one 😅)
I feel seen and validated. This video is perfection. I homeschool my two girls so I have zero planned writing time. When I get the chance I am writing that’s as far as my writing routine goes.
Even if people do care, they don’t care 😊 Least helpful writing advice I always hear: don’t edit as you go. The idea that it kills momentum because you can go back and fix it later… that’s not going to work for me. I would never remember all the (far) better tweaks and ideas I get the next day after being balls deep in a scene
Killer video! 👏 Def adding to my faves list! I'm sure I will need to hear this all again once I am deep in revision
