    Back in the day when I was taking Anatomy & Physiology, I was blessed to have a retired Harvard Urologist for a professor. He always told us that the kidneys can’t differentiate between liquids you drink. They will just take the H2O from whatever you drink and eat. As long as your urine is a healthy color, you’re fine.

    Y’all are great, wanting to keep ppl healthy.
    Since retired 3 yrs ago, I drink less water!
    At work, water on my desk, I would just reach for it & drink out of habit. Now, I have to “think” about water & I’m doing better about it.
    I’ve noticed my skin & hair is dryer. So I’m making changes.

    I am 51 and right now I’m limiting my water to 64 ounces of water a day because over the summer I started drinking at least 100 ounces a day, sometimes up to 144 ounces, and about two weeks in I started having severe swelling in my ankles and feet. My doctor told me to reduce the amount of water I was drinking because as we age we can develop leaky blood vessels. I cut back and sure enough, the swelling completely disappeared. So, I make sure I get my 64 everyday and call it good.

    The question is, does the diuretic dehydrate you faster, and to your detriment, versus drinking non diuretic liquids.

    • @ysvjlv
      @ysvjlv 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. I believe what Bob meant is that the scientists counted those fluids as part of people’s total fluid intake when determining amount for proper hydration. And yes, it is also true that water would be less dehydrating than caffeine-laden drinks, which in the end will make you lose fluids more quickly.

    I recall learning somewhere that the 8 glasses of water a day was the result of an old military experiment. I think it was to test how long a soldier could continue on with water alone, should they run out of food. I just drink when I'm thirsty. I did come across this article though:

    I firmly believe that most people need more water. Obviously people with chronic diseases and compromised health conditions have restrictions. But healthy people most likely need more water. I do this, I drink 60 to 80 ounces first thing in the morning, this is not counting coffee or other my pressed green juice drink. Then I have another 80 ounces throughout the day. I’m 160# and I too used to teach a spin class, but now ride my bikes almost daily.

  • @ysvjlv
    @ysvjlv 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Guys, first of all there is a condition, a rather dangerous one, called “HYPONATREMIA” where people have taken in too much fluid, especially plain water, and diluted the level of sodium in their blood to too low a level by “over-hydrating” themselves! It’s hard to do if you’re only drinking to thirst, but it can occur when for whatever reason people think they’re thirstier than they normally should be, or where people think they need to take in more water than they normally do. As you know, once the body’s electrolyte balance is thrown off like that it can be quite dangerous, so it can indeed happen, although admittedly it probably occurs much less frequently than dehydration. I’ve heard that researchers say it’s best to drink to your instinctual level of thirst, and that an added protection is to keep an eye on the color of your urine to assure proper hydration.
    Also, as someone who has suffered with the condition for years, and even has a few of your exercise videos relating to it in my favorites collection, Lymphedema is not a condition caused or worsened by drinking too many fluids. The fluids that we drink are very different from the lymphatic fluid causing our swelling. Lymphedema is the swelling of certain body areas, with widely varying severity, due to the stagnation of lymph fluid as a result of a DAMAGED OR FAULTY LYMPHATIC SYSTEM, and it is purported to actually be aided by proper hydration, so limiting water intake in this group of people would be ill-advised.

    I haven’t heard about drinking your weight. But I have heard you should be getting 1 gram of protein per lb of body weight. I drink between 1/2 to 1 gallon per day as an athlete. My mom’s doctor told her to drink at least 64 oz. per day and add salt to help her low blood pressure and Afib (she’s elderly). So true, we really all need varying amounts, but I think approximately 1/2 gallon is a good middle ground. for most people.

    If everybody at 60 is dehydrated, then maybe your definition is wrong? Nature doesn’t produce people who at a certain age are *all* out of wack wrt a basic physiologic function. But if you are to be assumed correct how is this a modern problem? References to the “disease” of dehydration I’d assume can be found in ancient texts? As to immediate drip in hospital, that has little to do with measured hydration IMO, rather standard procedure to start a drip upon admission for just about anything. Not knocking the procedure, only the rationale.
