      Ah, the Manhattan Project dodge. Sorry, dude, but that's bullshit. The search for knowledge does not exonerate scientists from the guilt involved in pursuing ideas that clearly can and will be used for evil. They are adult humans who can CHOOSE what to study and what to pursue, and studying how to control and oppress humans is NOT defensible. If you come up with a system for following people wherever they go, you are very much on the hook for the fact that it will be used to FOLLOW PEOPLE WHEREVER THEY GO. Your defense basically says scientists don't have either the brains or the moral sense to understand when something is just flat out WRONG. That is the worst kind of self-serving horseshit, and it will not fly.

    • @a.westenholz4032
      @a.westenholz4032 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@Serai3 Indeed. While the consequences aren't always predictable or obvious, when they are to any fairly intelligent person then I do think the scientists do have responsibility to think about what they are creating. As with the Manhattan project, they should have realized that there will always be wars and "enemy" that "must" be defeated at all costs, that to create a weapon that is so destructive that it destroys far more than the enemy soldiers, such as civilians, buildings, animals, and the land itself for decades maybe, is not only overkill, but dangerously destructive. Because once you create a weapon, even when the war is over, the weapon remains. And will only grow technologically. It is the same with all other technology.
      I think those Chinese guys were being disingenuous. They knew very well what they were doing. Whether they liked it or not. They probably also know that the government is well aware that the system can be abused and doesn't care as long as it achieves the government's main objective of control of the populace.

      first: it starts with automating everything from your homes, to your cars, to public places
      second: its facial recognition
      third: its the chip implanted into you to rid you of loose cash and keys
      then you go to one anti-establishment rally or talk about disliking a governmental decision over wine with some friends in your own home (your smart appliance or phone hears it) and you boom you cant start your car in the morning, the school bus won't allow your children on, the automated doors at the grocery store wont open for you, your bank accounts are frozen. and you have no loose cash to pay anyone and anyone within 10ft of you seen giving you assistance on one of the many cctvs will fall to the same punishment as you.
      this may sound like outlandish science fiction but if i can make it up in minutes online what is stopping a government/tech giant from implementing it with their employees who are paid DAY AND NIGHT to think these things up.

      koopatroopa187 its not at all the same. I currently have about 10k in outstanding debt and, as a result, a terrible credit score. It does literally nothing to impair my life other than stop me from starting a new credit line. Also, I can repair my credit score by either paying my debt off and working my way back into good graces with creditors, or by filing bankruptcy and waiting for the term to end then rebuilding my credit. Also, having a bad credit score is something we do to ourselves. VISA didn’t force me to use their credit card knowing I couldn’t afford to pay it back (hard times, you know), and nor should they other creditors be expected to give me more money considering I still haven’t paid back the money I already owe. Would you continue to let someone borrow money who never paid you back? In contrast, this Chinese system is largely arbitrary. You don’t have to do anything wrong (illegal), someone simply has to not like what you do, and your score drops. Also, unlike credit, once your score drops, you can never raise it again. Also, unlike credit, this will actually affect your life... can’t travel, get into certain schools, neighborhoods, have certain jobs, etc... this is as far removed as being similar to a credit score as it is from being a banana.

    I worked in China for a bit from UK to China 3 times in short succession - my producer told me that on the third visit - I will probably be detained and interviewed and what ever I do don't tell them I work in the film industry!!! Waiting at the carousel and being the last one there my bag didn't arrive and then I got a tap on the shoulder and turned around to see a tiny man in an ill fitting suit who knew my name - "Come with me" - I followed him into a small room where my bag was on a shelf. There was one table two chairs and the only things on the table were a pencil and a piece of A4 paper written out in Chinese with a picture taken from my at the time Facebook page with me holding the worlds biggest film camera. I was invited to sit down. He took several minutes looking at the paper, then looked up and said 'So why you come to China?" I said "I'm a film director" he said "Oh you Mr Horrywood, we take selfie!!!" and that's what he did. When I left the airport my producer was nervously waiting for me. He said 'you didn't tell them you were a film director did you?' Me 'of course not'. I also didn't tell him that we were followed all the way to the hotel either....

We have multiple party system and president doesn't have nearly as much power as in US for example. So there isn't any one goverment entity to be worried about. The freedom of speech, justice system independent from the leaders, no one political party or leader can have control over the police and democratic elections make abusing this technology and even implementing it on a large scale really difficult. In China however there is only one party, heavily censored media. Everything, even the justice system is under the CCP's rule. They already imprison and even excecute people for political reasons. This just makes controlling the country for the few people at the top a whole lot easier. Of course this is not to say I am comfortable with this technology gaining popularity in my country. The system could still possibly be abused even here.

First they said they would only be sited in areas where there are high crime rates. Now they are absolutely everywhere. Privacy is a luxury that most people take for granted. Maybe you can trust your government but this technology will be available worldwide. The people of Hong Kong would be fools to trust this technology don't you think?Your "catching a murderer" example is fairly moot point.

    • @craigraboteau7024
      @craigraboteau7024 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Max Mac i don’t think it is. People were afraid of gps when it first came out: “I don’t want the government knowing where I am all the time”. This fear has amounted to exactly zero... unless you’re a criminal. Then the government wi try to track your phone to find you, which the first have to get a warrant to do (at least in the US). The government “could” be using gps for nefarious reasons but, the truth is, most governments (currently) have no interest in behaving like China’s government. The technology to suppress freedom of speech has been present for, well... forever (indicative of this fact is that China has always suppressed freedom of speech), yet free world governments have yet to utilize these means. Why? Because they can’t? No. Because they aren’t movie villains. Any government could behave the way Stalin did (for a modern day parallel, see Putin) but they don’t. Just because they can doesn’t mean they will. My point to you was, yes. We all know that we’re being watched but, as of yet, that hasn’t been used for nefarious reasons in our countries, and there’s no reason to think it should be. This kind of thing is par for the course in China, but would be insane in other countries. So, I’m not concerned at all about being watched so long as its not taken advantage of. That was my point. And, outside of conspiracy theories, there’s no reason to think it would be. The truth is, this technology has existed all over the world for decades. Hell, facial recognition software is a basic part of facebooks algorithms. The difference here is how China is choosing to use it. The option to abuse it has always been there. Most governments simply choose not to.

      I love the UN as a concept, but in practice it's hard to have any faith in an organisation that specifically defines slavery and torture as unacceptable while also having members that are well known for their use of slavery and torture. If you want to be accepted as a global regulatory body, keeping your own members from committing what you define as entirely unacceptable crimes against humanity would probably be a good start. Like, can you imagine if Police Officers saw you beating someone to death and just said "Uh, hey...excuse...excuse me...could you not do that please?" and then just shrugged and walked off to write a report on why they couldn't possibly intervene when you carried on?
      And the saddest part about that comparison is that the UN hasn't even managed to timidly ask them to stop in most cases, unless you count the general statement that they think it's quite naughty.
