Collection Deal 1:08 Rights of consent 4:09 Admin deal 6:53 Co-publishing deal 8:52 CORRECTION 9:37 : In a CO-PUBLISHING DEAL you DO give up an ownership stake in your copyright. (Sorry about that folks just a simple mistake)
Can you please clarify exclusive and non exclusive publishing administration service? For example CD Baby Pro Publishing says "A songwriter cannot have an active agreement with another publisher or publishing administrator", and Songtrust says its ok to work with other publishers. Why is that? Both services just register your works in pro's 🤔
With the administration publishing deal is it possible to deal with the licensing yourself (if the brand is demand) in order to reduce the percentage exchange?
Yep but if the business starts to get too much for you then you can hand it off. THe bigger the licensing deals get you'll want to bring in a licensor with experience or your attorney.
Good video! I have a few questions: Do Co-Publishing deals always have an advance fee? Is Co-Publishing the most common kind of deal when signing with a record label? And, on Co-Publishing, is it still possible to set a length term to then have 100% of ownership back? the bit at 11:13 was a bit confusing with the part before it. Thanks!
1. No Co-Publishing Deals do not always come with an advance. 2. A record label doesn't sign publishing deals. THe only way is if the publishing house and record label are combined in the deal and the companies are combined. 3. 11:13 was relating to the term period of the copyright protection
@@MusicMoneyMakeover thx for replying back currently I'm working with a artist and where building a library of music how can I find a publisher to do a administration deal with i need a publisher that can find placement for our music in movies TV films and radio do me and my artist have to sign a administration agreement
questions: 1) for the collections deal, isnt it doing the exact same thing as agencies like ASCAP/BMI, HFA/MLC/MUSIC REPORTS? 2) i purchased ur books this afternoon and will read them shortly, but do you have any videos for selfpublished artists to exploit their publishing without a publishing deal? if so what is the link, if not can u make one please?
For the co pub deal you said you own 50 percent of the copyright correct do u also own 50 percent of the writers/publishing share as well if not can you add that on the agreement?
Correct a cop publisher does own 50% of the copyright. 50% of the writers share only kicks in on the mechanical, and on upfront clearances because there isn't a separate publishing share for those royalties and payments. Writers share only come sin when addressing performance royalties which i don't recommend that because now you're just being greedy at that point.
@@MusicMoneyMakeover lol thanks for the reply the reason why i asked because I'm currently working with a artist and where building a catalog of music together so for each track I pay so I can get more stake on each track from writers share and publishing share Also we agreed 50/50 on the copyright now everything is verbal agreement for now I'm currently getting the paperwork together I wanted to know if a co publishing agreement fits my situation or a partnership agreement?
@@gottech5601 There are co-pub deals where you as the writer/indie pub is entitled to 75% of your copyright while the co-pub gets 25% copyright. These kinds of deals are useful because they can register and help you collect your compositions on a mass scale, although they don't always give out advances. But its really good if you don't want an admin or collection deal to get all your money (as PROs and other agencies will pay the admin and collection pub first -- then they pay you minus their fees). With a co-pub deal, the PROs and other agencies will pay you directly according to your split with the co-pub. As an artist, its very important to sign up as a writer and publisher for your PRO account.
@@jirenthegray hey jiren again I appreciate you breaking everything down I'm currently with BMI both writers and publishing and with ascap i have my publishing but all my catalog that I own is on BMI
Hello, I need help. My goal is to get as much as my royalties as possible without putting all of my time into the business admin. part so I can still be creative and make music. My plan is to get an LLC, affiliate it with a PRO as a songwriter and publisher. I also plan to copyright my music and get an EIN. My question is: Do I sign up with SongTrust then hire a Distributor? Or do I skip SongTrust and hire a Distributor with a Pro such as CD Baby Pro or TuneCore Publishing? I do not want to do anything illegal but at the same time get my royalties and get help with administration. Thanks!
