I do believe that the most wholesome way of developing your listening skills is to make a lot of music / do a lot of mixes and keep listening to a lot of music that you love, however, these sorts of audio challenges did help me identify some weak spots in my hearing and I also thought it was a lot of fun!

Hi Michael, Sonarworks has a fun little game too called 'match the mix', just do a search for it and it's easy to find. Good if you just fancy a quick test of your EQ ears! All the best to you good sir, thanks for the videos

Great video! Inspiring honesty about yr start in this business for people in the same boat now. Also I love the warning at the end. To all beginners out there! Very important that advice. Preserve your ears at all costs! I went to a west end musical over the weekend. Should have taken ear plugs! Sitting next to a small raging infill speaker! Whilst everyone was standing clapping along to the final medley the kids voices between 2khz - 7khz were killing me. Within 1 sec i had my fingers in my ears and sat down to take cover till it had finished. If you come out of a club and yr home in bed wondering what that noise is in yr ears still. That's hearing damage. You should always wear ear plugs to clubs and loud events. Just someone shouting in yr ear in a loud environment can do quite severe damage too. Keep up the great videos! :-)

Michael's voice is so calm and soothing and very relaxed. It makes the production tutorials a lot more easier to understand and I consider them more fun in a way. Loudness, fast speaking and memes like other producer TH-camrs isn't always the best for me, sometimes calm, relaxing and slow speaking is the best. Much love to you my dude

I've bought Syntorial and gone through it and even though it is for synths and sound design it is also the most powerful ear training software for mixing. You ears get exposed to a lot of different sounds and characters and learning to hear the details of the sound is critical to get through the lessons. Even though they didn't have a compression module I could hear attack and release times after I'd gone through Syntorial.

    • @zugrath16

Insightful video!! I’ve been training intermittently but consistently for a year on soundgym, and went from an overall 63 percentile to the (overall) 97.6 percentile. I’m really bad at EQ but quite strong at compression and distortion recognition. So as a living proof of it I agree it is possible to not only improve but also master this stuff. It’s just a matter of putting in the hours, and I’ve found on soundgym a very interesting tool to intensively workout those basic mixing skills and make faster progress when we start and are kind of tone deaf still.
I’ve also seen even faster growth / improvement doing everyday both soundgym and actual mixing work. For some of us mastering this craft will take longer than for others (I double Mike’s age and cannot hear anything above 11KHz), but definitely we all could get there eventually.

With Quiztones I can compare before and after and hear the difference. Only being able to hear the processed version without knowing what the original is means you have to guess half of the factors you need for comparisson. Its a calculation, 'processed version' - 'original' = 'the difference'. Learning this skill is about recognising the difference, which is not possible. You have to make a calculation with 2 unknown factors out of 3... Maybe a good excercise for someone who's been doing this for years, but not for learning the skill, if you ask me.

I've been using the free daily workout for about 10 days now. I've been enjoying it. I wish they had an answer-review option. Say, I answer that the boost is at 5k - but the correct answer is 2.8k - I'd like to be able to compare the difference between the two - before moving on. It would be more helpful to know WHY I was wrong - rather than just THAT I was wrong.
Also, $25/mo. is too much IMO. If it were $10/mo. I wouldn't blink. But for $25....I'd rather put that towards a new plugin.

It could be that your hearing is naturally more sensitive. I don’t want to alarm you but it could also be a sign of something more serious like an ear infection, hearing damage or a sinus/head cold putting pressure on your ears. It would be best to get it looked at by your doctor to be sure. Good luck
