    I used to have a Trinity V3 keyboard. Amazing synth. I gigged it for 15 years and sold it to a friend who is still using it. It's 22 years old now and has been gigged 6 nights a week for 20 years. Great to hear the sounds again.

    You hit the nail on the head at the end. I've owned a Triton for 20 years and you can't make a track work with just the Korg sounds. It's very digital and hyped up sounding, but it needs some rougher, more truly analog sounds with it, to really shine.
    You also picked out a lot of my favourite sounds from this family of synths.

    I love the TR-Rack, great sound. I actually made a text file for it years ago when I still had it for the actually extra data was taken from the expansion libraries Korg released for the Trinity sampling board expansion(PBS Tri) and loaded it to what used to be Irish Acts(now known as the Korg Forums)....very detailed file. One thing users should be aware of, is you cannot access all of the internal parameters of the TR-Rack without an editor. There are some of course of the most important accessible from the front panel, but you need the editor to really edit this synth fully, which unfortunately is now defunct. Someone needs to update this editor and give the TR-Rack the love it deserves. I don't have mine any more, but it's a great synth.

    I agree with the premise here. I "only" have 1 of these (and have had it ~20yrs at this point) but have been tempted in the past to buy 1 or more additional units because they are so great and amazingly over the years I've seen them offered at between $250-$350 whenever I'd run across them online. I wish the ADAT (optical digital out) expansion that works with TR-Rack was easy and inexpensive to find. The drums alone are fantastic in these, but there is so much more great stuff too.

    I was planning on doing a video about the Trinity Rack since I finished up my hour long look at the keyboard last year. Suppose that's not necessary anymore since you've covered it! ^^;
    One thing I would mention for anyone looking at buying one of these, is that the Trinity Rack has a few disadvantages compared to the keyboard; besides the UI being dinky compared to the massive touch screen UI, you can't load the virtual analog/virtual acoustic SOLO-TRI or MOSS-TRI boards in. The former is a whole Prophecy synth and the latter is a Z1 with halved polyphony, and both are very very excellent additions. You can hear the SOLO-TRI and the base Trinity on my last four music uploads or so (the newest one is a great example of the Trinity sneaking into a mix).
    You also can't load the PBS-TRI sampler in, so while you do get 256 new sounds on the TR-Rack, KORG released three sample packs for the PBS-TRI board, one of which has about 110 of the 256 presets on the Rack. There's also a full bank of (really bad) orchestral sounds, and a full bank of (really accurate) M1 sounds. Of course you can load your own samples in, but the UI is atrocious imo and 8MB of memory is really easy to fill up. Plus you have to program all the sounds manually, no way to easily import Akai programs... there's some more things I think I went over in my video about all this, but suffice to say there's a lot to talk about with the Trinity!
    That said, just having the third PBS bank - the one with half of the Trinity Rack sounds - is enough for me, and the SOLO-TRI is a must own. The latter really puts the keyboard above the rack for me, but I'd love to get a TR-Rack some day just for that extra preset bank. I use my Trinity all the time in my music and absolutely love it, it's by far the best synth Korg has ever made and stands with the Ensoniq TS-10, Roland JD-990, and V-Synth as the best digitals ever made~
    Amazing video as always!

      @EspenKraft  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have one, and they are the most underrated digital rack synth, not in reputation, but price. Mine was $125 in mint shape off a CL ad here in LA. And I've seen others under $200 too. Real head scratcher. The only wish I could have is the ability for it too be just like the Trinity V3, accept samples and have the MOSS board built in. But as it stands the pads on this are just as good as the ones on my JD990, but different in the Korg way.

    I remember in 1997 i was in college and i wanted to buy my first synth / keyboard and i saw the korg trinity being used by Yanni in his live at the acropolis video and wanted to buy one so badly but they were around 2400 dollars and way beyond my budget. so i bought a used Alesis qs 6 instead. I bought the TR rack for 150 two years ago and love the sounds. I love the sounds so much that i recently went ahead and purchased a used trinity plus also. however the TR Rack still sounds better and love just playing around with all the combis and presets . The TR RAck sounds fuller and richer to me and has more banks then the trinity plus . thanks for posting another great video.

    Yup - love the Trinity! Bravo. Even compared to the later Triton, it just (for me) has better pads and synth cred. The Triton always sounded more "plastic" to me, if that makes any sense.

    • @madness8556
      @madness8556 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your plastic sounding Triton analogy makes perfect sense as I also felt the same way after selling my Trinity Plus for a fully maxed out Triton with MOSS board in 1999. Whilst the Triton was in many ways a big improvement over the Trinity, the latter just sounded fuller with a more sparkly high end and numerous acoustic samples that were simply better than the Triton such as the pianos, nylon acoustic guitars and saxes. Yes indeed, the Triton was certainly the better instrument in every other way including nearly twice the polyphony, much unproved sequencer, sampler (but no internal resampling), real time controller knobs, dual arpeggiators, much better fx routing, midi syncable LFOs and multi timbral MOSS sounds. The Trinity certainly had a superior digital multimode resonant filter compared to the Triton though and this was clearly evident if you owned both.

      Replacing the entire display on the TR-Rack is probably going to be very difficult because it's apparently a custom oversized alphanumeric LCD, the part might be very difficult to find aftermarket new. You might have to find used one from parted-out unit. But maybe just the backlight LEDs can be replaced, if that's the problem (even LEDs have finite lives).

      @@EspenKraft Interesting... är moro en hälsning på dialekt i Norge och var någonstans? Jag undrar eftersom moro är en hälsning på lokal finska i Tammerfors. Historien förteller att för 100-150 år sen var nästan alla fabriker ledda av svenskspråkiga eller britter, och det första man lärde sig på svenska av hövlighet var "god morgon" som senare blev "moro" bland finskspråkiga 🙂
      Tack för videon, jag funderar på att köpa en TR rack för 200 €, väldigt frestande efter att ha sett din video!

    I had a Trinity Plus V3 with the Moss board back at the turn of the millennium, but I sold it to a friend for half a dime and a crate of beer. The Plus V3 is very close to the successor, the Triton, but it sounds more raw, in my opinion. The only thing it lacks is an arpeggiator. Sure you can use the built in sequencer, but it's awkward.

    A rack synth from my birth year, how cool is that! I guess I should have one now because of that :).
    And it doesn't sound outdated to me, still very usable sounds for today. The sounds are very lush and beautiful and bottom-end for days.
    Oh, and I love how well it does in a 80s synthpop format situation, like the demonstrated with the song. Fits right in!

    I almost sold my TR but luckily didn't. So many nice sounds, even some Wavestation-like patches which I really like. The display is nice and large, but the knobs are too small. Truly a great addition for any musician in any style.

    Hooray! Finally Espen features synth that won’t end up driving the price up ( this must be true cause I never have that sort of luck and I already own one😁☝️)......thanks Espen nice feature, it’s a good digital synth isn’t it?! Only thing that would have been nice was if it had expansion card slots etc like its older (M1 & 01w). & younger siblings (triton) ...guess if you want that you go for the Triton but I think the trinity ( especially its resonant filter) has a sound of all it’s own...thanks!

    The one thing i noticed with this synth you will need the editor either the sounddiver or the soundtower editor..because the front panel did not have full edit capabilities

      Hi there, can you advise on where to get the Soundiver editor software, which will perhaps even work for current versions of MacOS or is the chance a wild dream?!

    • @ACLStands
      @ACLStands 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@damad77 I think i have the soundiver software somewhere.Also the soundtower TR editor i mentioned is for the Korg TR board not the TR rack, my bad.However there is trinitro that still works that might be handy to you that i do remember seeing a while back and i tracked it down for you here www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=18508 pretty sure that has the edit capabilities the UI is a bit dated from what i remember but worth a try.

    So I'm very new to vintage gear like this, but I heard that the Trinity had lots of good sounds from many games I played as a kid and I bought this TR rack version.
    I just got it in the mail today and I wanted to know, is it normal for this thing to get hot when in use? I don't think it's overheating since it still runs, but my Alesis D4 is also from that time, and doesn't get very hot.
