The way Rattle cues the massive bass trombone and tuba decending line just after the 2 minute mark makes me indescribably happy. Also, fantastic job by the horn section.
It's an interesting and showy idea, but the horn parts aren't *that* virtuosic, thematically significantly (we've heard the theme many times already... at least a wild key change would be more ...proper) or dazzling. The effect falls flat for me.
@@VanessaHolguin no offense to the Berlin Phil horns- but this performance does fall a little short. In the best performances, the energy is much more full and captivating- even more so if you get to see it live. It’s also important to have it within context of the whole piece. Mahler knew what he was doing when he told the horns to stand.
@@VanessaHolguinMahler wanted the horns to stand up so they could sound more forte and epic to the audience and the music. Is that so hard to understand...?
The most exciting piece I ever performed as a horn player! Exhausting, to be called upon to perform the most heroic horn passagaf ever, at the end of this 1 hour long masterpiece!
Even with 8 horns standing, we could not hear them that strongly. Perhaps the audience members behind them sucked up the sound? More projection was needed. That's what Mahler wanted.
Nicely done- great horns and percussion- but Simon, im a little disappointed that you rushed through the final bars too quickly...This was the hero conquering all adversaries and his moment of glory and it needed to be a bit slower! But overall nice job.
I was always taught that I didn't have to inflate my cheeks while playing and I did so.But I think it is a bit unnatural, I really don't understand why.
ab cd I’m guessing you are talking about a brass or wind instrument. If so, inflating your cheeks basically doesn’t allow you to engage all the muscles you need in your mouth to play.
ab cd it kind of diverts the air, so the airflow is a little bit sporadic and when you tighten your cheeks, you can get a more consistent airflow. I am a f horn player as well
I have a theory that Karajan left this symphony alone for the reason of the flamboyant instructions from Mahler for the Horns to stand, one thing Karajan was not is flamboyant!
FAAAAANTASTIC PERFORMANCE OF SS RATTLE... WHO IS THE BEAUTIFUL LADY WHO STANDS UP TO BLOW THE HORN???? I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW YOUR NAME.... FROM MEXICO APR252023
In the instant just before the horns stand up, about 1:29, see Sarah Willis glancing to her left to make sure she rises in sync with her colleagues.

Finale stellare!!! Il Titano che spezza le catene!!! Sovrumano!!!
Bellissimo commento 🙂
Absolutely beautiful. this joyful and powerful finale often moves my heart to tears. It's overwhelming.
So many musicians, such a fat sound! Look at how many horns are playing! Love Mahler for his aspirations of creating huge orchestras with huge sound.
Yes, thank you Mahler for providing more jobs for musicians.
@@peterrollinson-lorimer Lol that is a consequence but yeah 😂
As big as a Titan

Beyond belief fabulous!!
Two timpanists... Omg
Right nice, right nice.....
Contrary to the explicit instruction in the score, the horns stand up 4 bars too early.
Bravo.

Sir Simon = G.Mahler❤
The horns ringing always reminds me of christmas tunes.

First - you have to learn proper fundamentals. When you already a professional player, sometimes you do puff your cheeks ;) Trust me

Wow , even Jean Martinon with a Japanese orchestra sounded more exciting than this . How can you have so many horns and make them sound so small ?
I always think the tradition of the horn section is vulgar!

Abbado l'avrebbe diretta molto meglio.
Senza dubbio!
