  • West Bromwich's brigade response vehicle (BRV) turning out to an unknown incident earlier this year.
BRVs are 4x4 vehicles crewed by three firefighters. They recently came into their own, attending a wide range of calls as the standard engines were tied up on major incidents. They have attended fires in grass, bins, trees, sheds, cars and garages. They have also tackled blazes in houses and been sent to the scene of traffic accidents. BRVs carry 270 litres of water and are fitted with a powerful pump which can be connected to a hydrant. They also have breathing apparatus, a ladder, vehicle-cutting equipment, water rescue kit and defibrillator.

As a Fire vehicle enthusiast, I love seeing these "tactical" appliances that are different from just seeing the same regular pumps everywhere. But I'm conflicted because I know they probably came about due to budget cuts and firefighters have raised issues with their small crew size if they end up at house fires. That said, I guess I do agree with having small units to send to known smaller or isolated fires like bins and cars, and even for RTCs if there's' enough crew, and save the larger units for larger incidents. I'm a fan of unique solutions like this, such as Singapore's traffic weaving "fire bikes" and RRV "buggy" vehicles. So yeah, idk what to think of these RRVs operationally!

An incident is only ‘known’ to be small after a competent crew have deemed it to be so. Fire service what’s on fire? A wheelie bin.... ok sending a BRV. On arrival 1 wheelie bin well alight as is the house it was sat against.

The problem is they do not simply supplement regular pumping appliances - they replace them, and carry a crew of 3 rather than 4-5.

Exactly, both replies here are spot on. Basically, to use a tactical RRV you need very specific control room operators to clarify with callers, and then you basically need a regular pump en-route simultaneously just in case. So it sounds like more trouble than just sending a pump tbh. But what can you do with budget cuts eh

@@GeorgeThoughts reduce waste. There is a lot of waste within all public sectors.

@@GeorgeThoughts At the very least, the West Midlands BRV has a proper, albeit downsized, fire pump. Enough for one jet. The issue is water supply. If they do not hook up to a hydrant or reverse to a pond right away, they are doomed to fail and would just stand there and wait for a normal pump to arrive while some crap burnes out of control.
